Coming soon: Blocks magazine

Posted by ,

I've just been made aware of a LEGO magazine that'll be available in the UK next month. Called Blocks, it's billed as 'The magazine for the serious LEGO enthusiast' and will be available in WHS.

Going from the email address on the flyer, it's published by the company that produce Practical Performance Car magazine.

I will try and find out more about it.

Thanks Matt for the news.

By in Czechia,

Seems promising! Especially the title "Build a custom display."

'The magazine for the serious LEGO enthusiast' eh? Pity i'm not at all serious. I'm often really silly ;)

Well, I could certainly get behind this but will it tell me anything different to what my daily trawl of various sites (including this excellent one) does already? I hope so.

^^^ There was a call for material in the Brickish forum last spring it seems. I'm trying to ascertain whether anyone responded.

The key question for non-Brickish-FOLs is whether this will be available outside the UK, in either hard copy or pdf format.

It says on the bottom "not an official LEGO product." :-( I'm a bit confused, as I reckon people at my newsagent would like this, but I tried to pre-order some copies off the National Title File, but they don't have anything listed at all. Only thing that showed up was "Blocks". Most magazines are on it 3 months in advance. Is it a WHSmiths company that makes it?

I'm pretty sure WH Smith moved out of publishing when they sold Hodder to Hachette about ten years ago.

Looks like an interesting magazine. All magazines accept foreign subscriptions, they're pricy though because of the postage.

By in United Kingdom,

I'm now in contact with the editor and it all sounds very promising. Issue 1 will be out early in June and will have 130-odd pages, nearly all editorial.

I will find out about worldwide distribution.

I like the idea and will certainly be picking up the first issue. I would hope that it will be somewhat similar to BrickJournal and HispaBrick.

Huw, can I suggest that you ask them to give you a few sample pages in PDF format to share with us? I'm sure that would increase sales assuming the quality is good.

I just realised my previous comment made no sense. I meant to say only ALPHAblocks shows up, not Blocks! XD My mistake.

^^ I have done and they will!

Was there any indication of the likely price, Huw?

Hi. Just thought I'd give you an update on the forthcoming " Blocks " magazine. Just to let you all know I first came across the flyer / leaflet for the magazine at the National Space Centre where they were holding a Lego exhibition. Once I returned home I posted a picture of the flyer to my fellow Legoholics on a Facebook site where I found out that nobody had even heard a whisper regarding this. I then proceeded in emailing and asking a few questions. They got back to me today with this reply -

Hi Richard

Many thanks for getting in touch and apologies for the delay in replying as we have been in the studio to early hours as very busy ready for the launch as you can imagine.

To answer some of your questions, this is a brand new launch which is being trialled as a one off, but due to the response we are already looking at issue two. Frequency we are still discussing with the publisher, but monthly and bi-monthly are the dates we are looking at. The product content is for ALL lego fans but primarily aimed at the adult enthusiasts and collectors. There will only be LEGO in the magazine, NO mega blocks, CB etc...

The cover price will be £5.99, perfect bound on heavy paper stock. The initial run we are limiting with WH smiths holding the bulk of copies. However the number on the flyer will enable people to order over the phone should they prefer.

I hope that helps, and if you could send me a link of your posts, I will glady join in the discussion should more questions arise.

Once again many thanks for getting in touch and I look forward to hearing again from you.

All the best
Mark

May I suggest availability in PDF versions as well? Some of us on the other side of the planet would love to sign up for a subscription; but without the customary exorbitant mailing fees! Brick Journal does this extremely well and leaves more room in my "Lego Cave" for bricks!

I still really like the idea but it seems expensive for a magazine now I have seen the cost. I am looking forward to seeing if the cost justifies the content or whether I am just reading the same stuff I got from the web a few weeks before the magazine comes out. Will certainly be buying the first issue and wish the guys behind it good luck!

Sounds like a good idea for the magazine and I will certainly be buying. Any ideas of the date it will be hitting the shelves in W H Smith?
