Review: 71047 Dungeons & Dragons Collectable Minifigures

Posted by ,

Dungeons & Dragons features an extraordinary range of characters, far beyond the coverage of one Ideas set, brilliant though 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale is. Thankfully, the character roster expands with 71047 Dungeons & Dragons Collectable Minifigures.

These twelve minifigures include an exceptional variety of character types and races, plus a number of well-known villains, all of whom seem supremely detailed. Additionally, many come with alternative male and female heads, which provides a chance to create your own Dungeons & Dragons characters.

Summary

71047 LEGO Minifigures - Dungeons & Dragons Series - Complete, 113 pieces.

The selection of characters and their designs are superb, though not quite flawless

  • Amazing variety of characters
  • Great accessories and animals
  • The named minifigures are very accurate, overall
  • Mind Flayer could be improved

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Minifigures

Printed bases are becoming fairly common among themed series of Collectable Minifigures, as the Dungeons & Dragons series is the third to receive this treatment in two years. I am not sure the cobblestone pattern was really necessary, but it looks nice and differentiates this series from others, reflecting the fantasy medieval setting of Dungeons & Dragons.

Dwarves are a prominent race in Dungeons & Dragons, occupying a variety of roles. 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale features a Dwarf Cleric and a Dwarf Barbarian is found here, dressed for battle. I like the axe-shaped pendant around her neck and the fur collar, which complements the printed fur on both dual-moulded arms.

The horn on her back is also a welcome inclusion and this torso is readily adaptable for many medieval characters. However, the absence of leg printing is unfortunate. Plain black legs are fine, but almost every other Dungeons & Dragons minifigure produced to date includes printed or dual-moulded legs, so this one lacks detail by comparison.

The double-sided head looks good though and the barbarian comes with a new double-bladed axe, appropriately. While the standard axe blade pieces would have sufficed, I like the different textures and connection points on this accessory, plus its pearl dark grey colour. A flaming torch is included as well.

Alternative male and female heads are provided for several minifigures in 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale and I was happy to find the same here. A bearded head can thus be used for the Dwarf Barbarian, matching the dark orange hair and also featuring cheerful and angry expressions, like the female head.

Yellow is an interesting colour choice for the Gith Warlock because this colour is normally used for non-licensed minifigures, of course. A paler shade would probably have been more fitting for a Gith, although I like the facial markings and having the dual-moulded hair element with yellow ears could be useful for creating your own characters.

The hairstyle was produced for the Elf Wizard in 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale and it suits this character too. Additionally, I love the spiral patterns across the torso and legs, as well as the dark blue and dark red colour combination. The reddish brown accents are appealing too, between dual-moulded boots, gloves and spiky shoulder armour.

A new dagger is introduced here, featuring a distinctive curved blade and lovely texture around the handle. The magical staff looks splendid as well, topped with a printed eye. The purple and lavender detail inside the eye is great, so I can easily imagine the piece being re-used for large-scale creatures in the future.

Like the Dwarf Barbarian, the Gith Warlock comes with an alternative female head, without the beard and bushy eyebrows of the male design, but featuring near-identical facial markings and similar facial expressions.

The colourful Tiefling Sorcerer is among my favourite minifigures in this series, using another dual-moulded hair element, with dark orange horns. The horns line up nicely with highlights on the head and the orange skin tone is appealing, clearly distinguishing the Tiefling among these twelve Dungeons & Dragons characters.

However, I wish the orange band on the tail was concealed, as it looks awkward between the torso and legs. The tail looks fantastic from behind though, while the torso, arms and legs are beautifully detailed. I especially like the golden designs, including a repeated diamond-shaped feature on the chest and shoulders.

The sorcerer is equipped with a trans-pink lightning bolt accessory, making a nice change from the lightning element we have seen before. A baby dragon is also included, becoming the third such animal produced this year, following Norbert from Harry Potter and another in NINJAGO. Given its colour, maybe this dragon is related to Cinderhowl in 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale.

Once again, this minifigure comes with a second head, so you can assemble either a male or female character. Both designs look superb and the expressions capture plenty of personality, adaptable for a hero or a villain.

A head developed for VIDIYO has proven remarkably useful for Dungeons & Dragons figures this year, appearing in the earlier Ideas set and again on the Dragonborn Paladin. The pearl gold colour is striking and the sculpted spikes look great, with metallic gold scales beneath the eyes. Even more eye-catching, however, is the paladin's heavy armour.

The body armour blends features of two existing parts, as the breastplate closely resembles a piece introduced in 1990, while the shoulders match a more recent pauldron. The combination works well, although it seems a shame to hide the intricate detail underneath because the white tabard and mail-covered arms both look marvellous.

I am pleased with the accessories too. The paladin's shield displays the symbol of Bahamut, a dragon deity, while the mace incorporates a new spiked head, mounted on a blue handle. I like how the 4L bar can be seen through the mace, as though this magic-imbued weapon is glowing from within.

All twelve minifigures in this series portray different races, continuing with the Halfling Druid. This diminutive character makes perfect use of dual-moulded short legs and I love his nature-inspired garb, consisting of shades of green and brown. The double-sided reddish brown and dark green cape is particularly attractive.

The outside of the cape corresponds with the new hood component, which is adorned with a pair of antlers. Their moulded detail is impressive and the details on the torso are brilliant too, including some feathers and an oak leaf. Druids primarily draw their power from nature, which the minifigure definitely reflects.

Of course, the nature theme extends to the druid's accessories, as the minifigure includes a foliage-topped staff. Furthermore, these characters sometimes possess a magical bond with animals, which seems to be the situation here because a bird accompanies the Halfling Druid. This element has never been produced in dark tan before and its printing is unique as well.

The druid is another minifigure with male and female heads. The sideburns on the male head look good and the facial expressions are quite characterful, especially with the winking design shown below.

Reminiscent of Eagle Tribe characters from Legends of Chima, the avian Aarakocra Ranger looks very majestic. White is perhaps an unexpected colour choice for an aarakocra because shades of orange, brown or grey are normally considered more common, although the yellow beak really stands out against the white plumage.

Speaking of which, the moulded feathers on the head and wings look excellent. Both parts are new and the wings in particular seem highly versatile, so I would not be surprised to see them used again. Furthermore, I like the ranger's bird-like legs, complete with claws. The slight gap between the decoration on the legs and the torso is annoying, but the lightweight armour suits this character type, with a throwing knife on the back.

Aarakocra avoid melee combat wherever possible, so a dark tan bow is an ideal accessory for this character. A dog is also provided because rangers, like druids, are often joined by animals on their adventures. The same piece has previously been used for German Shepherd puppies, but it works equally well in dark bluish grey.

A malevolent Mind Flayer was probably the most recognisable character type missing from 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale, so I am delighted to see one among these Collectable Minifigures. Although the yellow eyes and tentacles are effective, I would prefer a more dynamic and menacing pose, as the Mind Flayer otherwise seems a bit unthreatening.

A cloak with a huge collar would have worked too, as Mind Flayers often seem to wear them. Nevertheless, the robes printed on the torso and dress element are impressive and the silver shoulder armour looks superb too, although a specialised armour piece would potentially have given the Mind Flayer a greater sense of intimidation, like the cloak.

While the minifigure itself leaves something to be desired, in my opinion, the creepy Intellect Devourer is faultless. These monstrous creatures are best described as brains with legs and they translate quite well to LEGO. The texture on the brain seems suitably gruesome and the creature can fit onto a studded surface, or even over a standard minifigure head!

The minifigures discussed thus far have been generic archetypes, but this series also includes four named characters. Strahd von Zarovich is one example and the vampire Lord of Barovia looks outstanding, directly inspired by an illustration of the villain from the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. A wholly original design could have been fun, but this minifigure is stunning too.

Strahd's long hair and light bluish grey skin suits an ancient vampire, while his ornate clothing bears a close resemblance to the illustration. The asymmetrical shoulder armour and clasp for the cape match the source material exactly, with chains hanging across the front and sand blue fur covering von Zarovich's right shoulder, complementing the predominant red and blue.

Although one side of the head looks fairly calm, the other is angry and displays the vampire's long canine teeth. This minifigure comes with a trans-clear goblet, a heavy sword and a black rat, with red eyes to match its master's. Strahd is capable of summoning bats or rats in certain circumstances, so this rat is a neat representation of that ability.

Our final generic character is the Elf Bard, whose vibrant clothing looks fantastic. The metallic gold patterns on his waistcoat are appealing and teal is a great colour choice, paired with dark orange trousers and dual-moulded boots. However, my favourite details are his magenta scarf and gloves, which work remarkably well alongside teal, dark orange and white.

Furthermore, it is nice to have another new hair element for elves, featuring shorter hair than most, but still plenty of texture. The warm tan skin tone is welcome too, providing a little more variety among characters. Warm tan has only been in use for a couple of years, so adding new expressions to the range is always pleasing.

The lute accessory was introduced for the Troubadour Collectable Minifigure a few years ago and its unique decoration here looks lovely, similar in style to the bard's ornate waistcoat. The pearl gold sword is a fun addition as well, having only appeared in this colour a couple of times before.

Both the male and female heads include smiling and singing expressions, with some metallic silver lipstick on the female design. Relatively few singing faces are available, so I am glad to have another one here.

The Lady of Pain is perhaps the most eye-catching minifigure in the series, thanks primarily to her spectacular headdress. This character is wrapped in mysticism and the minifigure definitely conveys her majesty, sporting a huge reddish orange cape. I love the inscrutable expression on her gold mask and the Lady's identity remains unknown, as the head underneath is plain black.

Sand green is an attractive colour for the headdress and the intricate blades look marvellous too. As expected, this whole piece is made from rubber to account for these blades. Also, the orange dress is beautifully detailed across the front and back, even though the back is usually concealed by the Lady of Pain's magnificent cape.

Such is her power that the Lady of Pain floats above the ground, so a trans-clear 2x2 brick is included. This minifigure comes with a cubic gate too, used to open gates between planes of existence and displaying the symbol of Arborea on top. Ideally, the sides would be decorated with symbols denoting other realms, but that would need a bigger accessory.

While the Lady of Pain's true alignment is hard to identify, Szass Tam is indisputably evil! The undead ruler of Thay certainly looks sinister, featuring a skull-like head with vivid red eyes and complex patterns on his forehead. Like the other named characters, Tam takes inspiration from 5th Edition artwork and the level of accuracy is impressive.

On the other hand, the robes are not nearly as detailed as other minifigures in this series, so Szass Tam seems quite plain by comparison. However, I like the skeletal design on the torso and Tam's dark red cloak is appropriately regal, complementing his red robe and finished with an immense collar.

Szass Tam is several hundred years old and has collected numerous magical artefacts. These include a darkskull, represented by a trans-red skull on this occasion, which is a new colour for the piece. He also wields a trans-orange power blast, presumably serving as a fireball.

Tasha the Witch Queen completes the series and features wonderful detail, maintaining the standard of her fellow Dungeons & Dragons minifigures. However, re-using the dual-moulded hair and hat element from 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters' Cottage seems odd because Tasha is traditionally portrayed with black hair, though not always.

Even so, Tasha's flowing hair looks perfect and her dark bluish grey ensemble is appealing as well, including several straps and silver buckles on the torso and legs. The arms are printed to match and Tasha's dual-moulded legs are excellent as well. In fact, this whole series used dual-moulded parts to brilliant effect.

Tasha has developed countless spells and comes with a book containing probably her most famous spell, Tasha's hideous laughter. This printed tile mirrors those in 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale and I love the minifigure's laughing alternative expression. Also, Tasha carries a cauldron with a trans-pink flame inside, depicting a steaming potion.

Overall

I was very impressed with the minifigures from the earlier Dungeons & Dragons Ideas set and 71047 Dungeons & Dragons Collectable Minifigures offers even more! Collectable Minifigures have become increasingly complex lately and this group is no exception, as each minifigure is richly detailed and the many dual-moulded elements are welcome, as usual.

Like every series, there are highlights and lowlights. For example, I find the Dwarf Barbarian a bit dull and I wish the Mind Flayer looked more threatening, perhaps featuring a grand cape to enhance its visual impact. Even those are satisfying minifigures on the whole, however, so the Dungeons & Dragons series is another terrific selection of Collectable Minifigures.

A lot of these feel like rejected Vidiyo characters

I wasn’t super hyped for these at first but now I’m tempted. The addition of two heads for most characters is kinda awesome, cool to have that kind of inclusion for a lot of these characters

By in Switzerland,

Predicting that this series once retired, will increase in price like the simpsons.

Pretty useful figures and elements.

How to best buy the whole series and avoid hunting down certain ones?

Gravatar
By in Poland,

ZERO bad figures. Even the weakest ones (Dwarf and Vampire) Has unique accesories and good usefull pieces!

I still think itsshame Dwarf has no beard...

Gravatar
By in Austria,

New prints are always appreciated, especially re-useable ones. Upon seeing these close-ups, I've now decided to grab the tan skeleton guy in addition to the bard, dwarf and halfling. The only thing left to decide is whether his head is more appropriate for a Yuuzhan Vong priest, intendant, or warrior.

By in Canada,

A lot of these feel busy, and, I don't know, too specific for me? Like these are somebody's character instead of a broader archetype. The pain lady and dragon knight are cool, though.

Sure, mostly I'm seeking to know what packaging options will be available.

Minifiguresplus is where I've been buying our minifigure sets from for a few yrs now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

D&D players: the game doesn't have demonic or witchy stuff!
Me: *Points at this series*

Regardless, I am definitely getting some Aarakocra rangers! The wings are perfect for Chima eagles in my army, and the molded heads could possibly be used for pureblood members of the Tribe, maybe even descendants of the Eagle Legend Beast herself!

By in United States,

I'm noting that Strahd Von Zarovich's classic design was much closer to a Bela Lugosi Dracula. If you still have a 2012 Lord Vampyre figure, he'd be an adequate substitute for classic Strahd. This looks like the modern version, sure, but original Ravenloft looked a lot closer to a Universal Horror universe with various domains imitating Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, and a few horror analogues of classic D&D realms like Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms.

Szass Tam kind of looks like Azalin, a lich from Greyhawk who ended up in Ravenloft as well.

Man, I'd have loved a Lego Lord Soth.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Only interested in Strahd when the lineup was announced, but this review has left me tempted by a few others...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe the Gith Warlock is yellow to represent Aristul the Yellow.

Overall this has to be one of the best collectible MF series they've made. I don't have to worry that they're in boxes that can't be felt like the bags because I want multiples of all of them.

Those six pack boxes I got lucky ordering two at a time.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Have to admit that I wasn't massively interested when they were first revealed (despite playing the occassional D&D game) as they seemed overly specific, and I generally collect for parts these days...

But have to say that now I'm sorely tempted by some of these parts... some fantastic designs on those torsos.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Certainly getting these. Might need doubles of a few.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh dear, they’re actually really great for fantasy mix-up… must resist.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know nothing of D&D other than pop culture references in TBBT and Community. I did watch the Chris Pine movie, but still knew nothing of the lore or realm it would all be in.

With that said, I have already pre-ordered my complete set for this series a week ago. I love new prints, especially when can be linked to some sort of castle theme.

I may have to hunt down a few spares for army building.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Love the paladin armour and the new dwarf axe.
Mind Flayer, Lady of Pain and Szass Tam are nice but I have no idea who they are and they're unsuitable for army building.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I expect these will be available nearly everywhere that sells Lego and D&D products. With the scanner QR code now being standard on the minifigure boxes it should be no trouble to score a set and complete the series.

The Mind Flayer is generic and not any particular character so that and the Intellect Devourer it comes with could probably be used to army build if someone wanted to.

Gotta catch them all…

D&D is basically open-world Tolkien. The various campaigns had pre-built lore and a series of novels establishing all the lore, although nobody was ever bound to it if the Dungeon Master wanted to develop their own story.

Also, the existing lore from the 70s through 00s, I gather, has been chucked for a revised and streamlined version. I cut my teeth on Weis & Hickman's Dragonlance novels, and from what I gather, both authors have been kind of unpersoned from the publisher for some reason.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Its nice that there are none that I couldn't use in some form or fashion so I ordered a few. Would really like the dragon knight, mind flayer or the elf bard, though.

Use the minifig scanning websites (once they've got their act together and added the series) - point your phone camera at the code on the bottom and they'll tell you.

Alternatively, buy a sealed box of 12 if you can.

Regarding the Dwarf Cleric, have they ever printed that size of legs before?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is the halfling druid's head in nougat? Asking because I have some AU female clone troopers in my LEGO Star Wars army, and that double-sided head looks perfect!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

My only knowledge about D&D comes from watching The Big Bang Theory, but I really like the Halfling Druid figure. Definitely going to get that one. Also like the evil version of Hermione, sorry, Tasha. Although when I hear that name I will always think of Denise Crosby - as well as one certain "fully functional" android. :-)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Yes to all!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

My only complaint is that they should almost all have yellow heads/hands instead of fleshtoned. Which is a pretty big failure on LEGO's part.

Personally I would have preferred yellow for the humanoid characters, but that was never going to happen for a licensed series. They're very easy to head-swap, except for the elf ears I guess.

Gravatar

I already preordered full set with a discount. Lego pricing policy is ridiculous right now if you can pre-order a set from a third party retailer with a discount. But hey, the figs are awesome so I'm more than happy to pay less.

"licensed sets" only do it for canon reasons: They're imitating actual people/characters that have a skintone. Generic "dwarf barbarian" with a head swap for gender? Yeah, that should be a yellow head. The ones that are specific named characters or are creatures with an attached color? Those can stay colored. But the dwarf, elf, halfling, human... those should all no-human-ethnicity yellow.

I mean, the only licensed theme with yellow heads has been the Simpsons. So I think it's more like they'll only do yellow for canon reasons at this point. (Barring 20+ year old Star Wars sets)

The very first minifigs to have the medium size legs actually had leg printing: Look at the school robes of Harry, Ron, Hermione and Dean Thomas from 71022-23.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The intellect devourer seems like a great mad-science creature for a horror scenario, and the translucent red classic skull would be excellent set dressing for any number of settings. I don't need half of these minifigures, but enough look appealing and useful to look into it.

Part of me wishes we were getting Drizzt (instead of the Lady of Pain, for instance), but I'll still be buying multiples of each minifigure. Happy that so many come with a second head and new pieces, as well.

I believe the little red dragon accompanying the tiefling is in fact a pseudodragon, which are small draconic creatures often seen as familiars.

I also wonder if the cauldron Tasha holds is a reference to the expansion book Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.

Early SW and HP, plus TLM/TLM2 are technically licensed (WB co-owns the original characters like Wyldstyle, and many of the ancillary characters are from preexisting IP).

@saltytbone:
@PhantomBricks:
@J0rgen:
Okay, I wasn’t really sure one way or the other, and was too short on time to look (I do remember lamenting that the HP robes legs were printed). So, with the HP/FB wave, that was the last to be exclusively produced in China. Following the Unikitty packets (not technically part of the CMF line), TLM2 was the first to get global production.

China obviously had their printing line set up to handle midi-legs from the start, but it’s possible they haven’t seen a reason to set up for that in other parts of the world. If they haven’t, there may be logistics issues with printing those legs for a while, such as having X color produced someplace where they aren’t set up to print it. Of the minifigs you’ve all cited, only the Avatar one wasn’t a CMF. Of course, that just makes it seem weirder that this one doesn’t, so maybe they just didn’t have the parts budget left for a print.

@Tuzi:
Yes, there are several apps and sites that support scanning, and the most recent wave has exclusively had the larger 2D codes that can be scanned. However, the code doesn’t identify the minifig. It identifies when the minifig was made. AFOLs need to compile information and add it to these systems to make them work for identifying specific minifigs. Otherwise, the best they can be used for is making it possible to avoid buying duplicates.

Maybe for a shaper? (but then with medusa-type hair element)

Personally I would have preferred yellow for the humanoid characters, but that was never going to happen for a licensed series. They're very easy to head-swap, except for the elf ears I guess."

But the dwarf, elf, halfling, human... those should all no-human-ethnicity yellow."

I mean, the only licensed theme with yellow heads has been the Simpsons. So I think it's more like they'll only do yellow for canon reasons at this point. (Barring 20+ year old Star Wars sets)"

Team GB was licensed and yellow.

Yeah the mere mention of Tasha instantly reminds me of Star Trek TNG.

Will try and track some of these down when I’m in London in Sept, given Australia doesn’t get them till October. Any suggestions aside from Leicester Square Lego store?

As a start there are the three other Lego stores in London, one at each of the Westfield shopping centres and one at Battersea Power Station, all of which are generally less busy than Leicester Square. Hamley's may have them, otherwise some of the Big supermarkets carry them (Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys etc.) but that is generally on a location by location basis.

You say Mind Flayer, I say Cthulhu. This has to be the most impressive series of minifigures there's ever been. You can count the things I know about Dungeons and Dragons on the fingers of no hand, but this could achieve the ultimate goal of any merchandise: to get you interested in something you formally didn't know about. This could do it for me, and if it does it for others then it's a fine work indeed.

@CapnRex101, The tiefling sorceress is wearing a crop top which explains the visible midriff created by the tail piece.

I believe that the magical effect in the sorceress’s hand is the magic missile spell, a classic D&D evocation that does 2 to 5 hit points of damage with each of three missiles (in the lowest and most common form of the spell - you can fire more missiles at higher levels).

As someone who hasn't played D&D before, these all look very cool but I have nearly zero context for any of them. That said, my favourite of these is absolutely bird-guy and his pet dog; I really like the character design, and the idea of a giant bird person with a regular-sized canine companion is not one I had ever thought of before but distinctly appeals to me!

Also like orange sorceress lady and her little dragon, too ^^

Some of these are just a head swap away from making really nice Castle minifigs. Put a regular minifig head and a helmet on that dragon guy and you've got yourself a new faction of knights. But they're also great for what they are, even if I'm not entirely sure what some of them are. Now do a cartoon D&D series.

They definitely will be scanable. Theres a couple of youtube unboxing vids where people have gotten them early and they've got the codes on the boxes. Bricksearch App which i've used to scan the last few series have said they'll be adding them all as soon as possible.

Maybe a misunderstanding of the fact that it doesn't involve quote-unquote "real" witchcraft/demons—a charge that was often levied at the game during the "satanic panic" in the '80s.

D&D absolutely includes magic and monsters, to nobody's surprise, but it's all obviously pretend, despite what paranoid parents/religious figures might claim.

“Printed bases are becoming fairly common among themed series of Collectable Minifigures, as the Dungeons & Dragons series is the third to receive this treatment in two years.”

And before that, we also got printed stands for:

- DFB series (German Footballers)

I hope Lego continue this trend

By in Belgium,

One of the most boring series ever. They seemed appealing at first and colourful.
Sadly, once put together, they form a bland mish mash series with way too many capes.
The double heads are also pretty pointless.
I never favoured the themed series, and this must be the most niche themed series so far.
In my opinion, the non themed ones remain the interesting and attractive ones. And they ask for design creativity instead of just minifguring pre-determined characters.

Ordered two dozen from Lego. Got 3 of every figure they sent. Unfortunately no Tasha, Gith, Szass, or Lady of Pain tho. Wish they were randomized and didn’t realize they shipped in threes.
