LEGO and Nike announce partnership

Posted by ,

LEGO and the American sportswear manufacturer have just announced a partnership, although details are scant and vague at the moment. The press release reveals that:

  • The multi-year global partnership connects two of the most beloved and iconic brands to highlight how the power of play shapes lives.
  • The brands will bring to life the many ways creative play and sport can help kids be the best versions of themselves.
  • The partnership activity kicks off next year, and could see a series of co-branded products, content and experiences that combine the imaginative power of LEGO bricks with the “Just Do It” spirit of Nike to invite all kids into play and sport.

A fancy animation has been created to accompany the announcement, which you can view at LEGO.com/nike and nike.com/lego.

There's no word on what this means for the Danish toy manufacturer's licencing agreement with Adidas -- Nike's fiercest rival -- which has yielded various items of footwear and apparel featuring the LEGO logo and brick styling, plus, of course, 10282 Adidas Originals Superstar.

I am sure that the 'could' that I've italicised above can be replaced with 'will', otherwise there'd be no point to the partnership. What do you think will come out of it?

My crystal ball foresees a new type of Air Jordans for all the footwear collectors.

Presumably more tat.

Uhh yeah.... who cares?

More status symbol desk ornaments. Maybe some "stick a brick on it" fashion accessories. Minifigs of Nike athletes or the return of the Lego Sports theme? Possible but unlikely.

Other than that, a lot of money changing hands and some well-compensated ad copy writers.

Come back in a couple of years, and it'll be mostly forgotten. "Remember when Lego and Adidas..." take two.

By in Denmark,

I almost always buy Nike shoes, they’re better than adidas. I hope they’ll make some cool and less kid-looking, fair-priced shoes. Otherwise I hope for a minifigure. Haha.

Nike GWP to replace the Adidas on my Lego AT-AT?

A Shia LaBeouf minifigure is only I'm interested in.

One, two...

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Maybe it'll be a collectible series, like Vidiyo, but this time the minifigs wear shoes, and there's an app to draw more shoes or to scan tiles of existing shoes...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

so we’re getting bionicle shoes again, right?

By in United States,

The only set idea is more shoes. Did the Adidas shoes sell well?

Likely apparel will come out of it. Beyond that I'm not imaginative enough to think of where this leads.

But I'm not really the market or it either since I don't wear most name brands.

By in United Kingdom,

I can't help thinking that this gets away from the 'spirit' of what Lego is all about, something that can exist in a creative way without the need for brand tie ins, tech, apps and licensing as it did back in the late 70's and early 80's when I completely avoided any computer games or 'non analogue' activities. But I accept that times change and I suppose I could have been a highly paid computer programmer / software developer / professional gamer now so what do I know...

By in Germany,

Funny coincidence. We went to a Nike outlet store just today. I even bought a pair of Jordans, even though I usually prefer other brands for my shoes, but these were really comfortable.
I never liked Adidas footwear either, I think I had my last ones of those as a kid.
Since I was born with a handicap concerning my feet I have always had problems finding shoes that fit comfortably, especially ones for longer walking distances and for sports.
Your typical run of the mill products (which more often than not also meant most of the popular and trendy ones) just didn't fit for me.

By in Netherlands,

If only theu had shown some actual products instead of just this marketing barf...

Maybe Nike will do some shoes that with every step will make you feel like you stepped on some Lego bricks?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I do actually think that winking minifigure head with a nike swoosh for a smile works rather well, but beyond that, it's very hard to judge whether this partnership will produce much in the way of products that I will want to buy.

By in United States,

I'm very curious to see what comes of it. My kids like both.

A Nike Store would be a fun addition to LEGO City and Heartlake City, as would another sports themed CMF line, or smaller sets built around various sports. For kid (dare I say even adult?) clothes the cross branding could be fantastic even if you don't bring in individual athletes.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Stuff I imagine that is actual Lego: sports sub-theme for City, Friends and Creator (similar to how they did space this year), a run of CMF, and an Icons set nobody will want (unless it is modular compatible, hehe).

Nike clothes and sports gear with Lego theme could be cool for kids though to engage them more with sports, if that's what it takes.

Has already been done in 1998. It even had a stingray keychain and Aquazone branding.

And each stud had a zipper to turn it into a mini pocket.

It's sort of a shame Lego's slogan isn't "Just imagine" anymore, some possibilities there.

I own a copy of that one (but I also own the episode when he fought Dracula, so it's hard to be too incredibly critical). I haven't cracked the seal on it to rewatch it, but I never did figure out the point of that movie. Basically everything that happened would have still happened if Indy slipped on a bar of soap getting out of the tub, right?

@PurpleDave: Funny, I've heard the same 'argument' w/Raiders (ad nauseum sometimes)...to which I always point out: If Indy hadn't 'been there', Marion would have died in her bar (Toht clearly wasn't messy around, and if not for Indy...).:)

@Lukasz64: You're mostly right about the Ikea deal (and those boxes suuuuuuuck...won't seal worth a darn, have non-studded 'floors' so stuff can't affixed)...but that did have cool minifigure and accessory set...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@brick_r:
Would Marion have died? How much of the bar burning down was Indy's fault? She may have survived and prospered in her mountain retreat. Toht would have had the entire headpiece, though, so they would have found the Well of Souls a lot quicker. But here's where things could have gone very differently. If Indy hadn't gotten involved, the flying wing wouldn't have blown up, and they would have _flown_ the Ark all the way back to Germany, where maybe it would have melted Hitler's face off instead of Belloq's. Dammit, Indy, you screwed the entire world!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@PurpleDave: Well...ok, "odds on favorite" say Toht would have if Indy weren't there...and I'd 'side bet' that he'd order the bar burned down too, his excuse likely 'being thorough'...call it a felling or 'vibe' I got (since I was a kid actually...well, 'tweenager':))...though if they had flown the Ark back, Indy wouldn't been dragged through the ocean via a U-Boat...which...HOW...how could he sleep for example...wouldn't his arms 'give out'...:| (:D)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Another round of desperately trying to pretend that wearing status symbol clothing, in order to be just like the cool kids, is somehow creative, and therefore just a natural and perfect fit for Lego

Gravatar
By in United States,

@brick_r:
Toht's most sinister moment is when he walks into the tent in Egypt...and assembles a travel clothes hanger to hang his coat on. Yeah, he also chucks Marion down into the Well of Souls later, but I find it hard to get a read on when he'd go scorched earth, and when he'd let you walk away precisely because you'd _know_ you probably should have died.

As for the U-boat, I know there's a deleted scene with Indy just clinging to the periscope, but didn't the finished film show him strapping himself to it with either his belt or satchel?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@PurpleDave : Ah...I see you forget 'the poker' (Idny wiki: Toht tried to take the piece by preparing to torture Marion with a hot iron, but Indiana Jones appeared and intervened, disarming Toht with his bullwhip.) Or...:
Toht : Your fire is dying... here, why don't you tell me where the piece is right now?
Marion : Listen, Herr Mac, I don't know what kind of people you're used to dealing with, but nobody tells me what to do in my place.
Toht : Fräulein Ravenwood, let me show you what I am used to...

[Toht prepares to torture Marion with a hot poker]
Marion : Wait, wait! I can be reasonable!
Toht : That time has passed.
Marion : You don't need that. I'll tell you everything!
Toht : Yes, I know you will...
[Bullwhip!!!:D]

@brick_r:
Disfigurement is different from execution. And the bullwhip is precisely why the bar got torched. Belloq was clearly set up as a gentleman villain. Cultured, but ruthless when the situation calls for it. Toht was something very different, and part of what makes him so effective as a character is how unpredictable he is. This makes it very difficult to nail down a likely course of action, because you can point to Exhibit A that proves what he'd do...or Exhibit B where he does something completely different.

I mentioned the coat hanger because, at that point, we'd seen him do, or about to do, some completely terrible things, and they played into that characterization very effectively when he pulls out this unfamiliar device, makes a threatening motion with it, and then hangs up his coat. If Marion hadn't been so stubborn, and had simply handed him the medallion when ordered to do so (then she wouldn't have been Marion, but that's a different matter), I could see him walking out of the bar and leaving her unharmed. Or I could see him ordering his goons to eliminate her as he walks out. When she resists, she's obviously going to get harmed, but it's equally difficult to say whether he'd leave her horribly maimed by capable of surviving on her own, so severely wounded that she'd be likely to die of her wounds if not discovered in time, or if he'd just end her. The one thing I can say with reasonable certainty that he wouldn't do is put a lot of physical effort into killing her, like strangling her, or pushing his thumbs through her eyes. If he did choose to kill her, he would either do it with minimal effort, or order someone else to do it for him.

@Murdoch17: Aren't there always :)...anywho...

@PurpleDave: I guess you and I will have to 'agree to disagree' on this one, I mean; I "see" in Toht's speech that: 'driven' would be an understatement describing him, and clearly (at least in my eyes) he'd not have 'an issue' going beyond disfigurement. I mean the "That time has passed" line still chills my spine the same as when I first heard it, not to mention: the body language, facial expressions and so on (yes, yes, yes; I know: character/acting)...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@brick_r:
Its' not that he's not an effective villain (to the contrary, I don't think he's been matched across the entire Indiana Jones franchise), and it's not that I'm suggesting he's squeamish. It's that he's not always-on brutal like Dovchenko. That makes him a bit more unpredictable than most Indy villains, and that makes him more unnerving than just the mannerisms that the actor brought to the table.

When we meet the character, there's an impression that he could be reasonable, until Marion rebuffs him. Then, he's willing to do terrible things. When he walks into the tent with that hanger, the first time you watched it, you probably expected him to strangle Marion, didn't you? But he didn't, so you let your guard down. Then he tosses Marion down into the pit, which you probably weren't expecting, because he didn't seem so bad after hanging up his coat. But if you can't even predict what he would do during the film, how can you say with certainty what he'd do with hypotheticals?

What would really sell though if they're going the sports route is a New York Yankee Stadium build and minifigs of Hall of Fame Yankee players.
