Limited Edition Batman 85th Anniversary

©2024 LEGO Group

40726 Batman 85th Anniversary, which comprises BrickHeadz set 40748 Batman 8 in 1 and some posters in a fancy box, is now available, but not as a GWP as originally predicted: it's an Insiders reward. The limited edition set can be yours in exchange for 3,000 points in the Rewards Centre.

Additionally, LEGO's Batman Day promotion has started, but it's a bit underwhelming: you'll receive polybag 30653 Batman 1992 when you spend over £40/€40/$40 on Batman sets, and double or triple points on selected ones, between now and the 23rd September.

Who in their right mind would spend hard-earned Insiders points on this? It's a gimmick to end all gimmicks: 'lets put a crappy set not many want inside a fancy box, throw in some posters, and sell it to suckers.'

P.T. Barnum would be proud. (For those who don't know, he's the guy who quipped 'There's a sucker born every minute', even though he might never have actually said the line.)

I thought it was going to be a slightly different version of the set. It’s a pass for me

Probably the most pathetic 'special' day so far. A feeble £3.50 Batman GWP that is excluded from the upcoming Batmobile. How mean is that? And the 8-in-1 Batman BrickHeadz almost as overpriced in Insider Points as it is in RRP.

@Murdoch17 I hear you but when you enter the fantastic world of collectors, not a whole lot make sense. You can collect from a list of all sort of useless items but if suddenly you have every single items on the list of the useless items, then it is worth something and sometimes something big. Some people will buy both 40748 and 40726 and as such their 'collection' will be complete and most likely more valuable. One collector can look at the collection of another collector and not understand why someone would collect that (and vice-versa). I collect a bit of Lego here and there and many times I don't even understand myself why I do it and why I have such a 'need' for some Lego sets. As the saying goes: to each their own.

. . . or maybe for $23 worth of points, you get a $25 set, plus a little something extra?

Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're into it, seems like a fair deal to me.

Vip points? Aw man, I thought this would be a GWP...

To be fair, you spend £18.75 worth of Insider Points for a £25 set (UK prices) and it comes with "8 Batman ‘movie’ posters and a special comic" as well as unique packaging for the box. For a collector or for some Batman fans, this doesn't seem too bad.
Not everyone will see this as a gimmick, some will put value in the special packaging, the posters and the comic, all at a lower price than retail.
All the same, while I'm a bit of a Batman fan and I enjoy a lot of the BrickHeadz, it will be unlikely I'll be picking this (or the standard release) up.

That definitely sounds a bit like me. I’m with that

By in United States,

as i said before, I am the target market for this set...all Batman all the time including hunting down the parts to build all 8 brickheadz. BUT, the only reason I would consider getting it is in order to sell it to someone more desperate than me a couple of years from now. I really wish it were something more.

I'm so glad I never got into BH. Now, if someone could cure me of my Lego SW problem.

Pretty dumb. You are only going to build one Batman at a time, so all those bricks are just sitting there uselessly, even though you paid all that money for it.

By in United States,

I have no real interest in 40726 and I already have 30653, but I have been meaning to pick up 76224 to go with my 76265. 76270 is a bit tempting, too. I might even pick up the non-limited edition, 40748. That would be a definite if the instructions for all eight versions were available as PDFs online.

My brother I'm going to stop you right there.
Just because you don't like the set doesn't mean it's a bad offer. First off, for anyone wanting to get the original set, it would cost 3,250 points for a $25 off promo code. The exclusive version is only 3,000 points. You are actually getting a discount instead of an up-charge. (Very small, but still something.)
Secondly, if you were already wanting this set, which I was, this is a perfect opportunity for me to spend my limited vip points on.

I was going to get this set regardless, so why is it bad that I get to save 250 points while getting a cooler product?

If you quit now, there’s a lot of SW collectors who’ll reward you financially.

It's less than the 3,250 required for a $25 dollar discount which would get you the set

By in Netherlands,

I wanted two of those Batman sets anyway (because of the printed parts you need two + some extra parts to make all batmans at the same time). I normally use my Insider points for discounts, but this is sort of like a discount as well. Instead of paying for 2 Batman Brickheadz sets, I just paid for one plus used a discount. At the end of the day it's the same end result.

Do I think it's a ridiculous thing though, having this kind of 'limited edition' for 3000 points? Yes, yes I do. If I wouldn't have wanted two of those sets anyway, I would've just gotten a normal one and kept my points for something else.

True. And it's more like 3445 points considering local sales tax. Even the 2x Points event and getting credit card cashback would not quite tip the balance. I'll ignore the naysayers and go back to thinking I made a reasonable decision. And wait for discounts on the second copy.

By in Norway,

In Norway at least this is a great deal!
3000 points = NOK 200,-
The base 40748 set cost NOK 330,-
So basically a 40% discount!

Lame that it is only VIP points - I'm the kinda buyer who gets 800 points and always uses it as a £5 discount. This shouls have been a set purchasable for a limited time. Unless they start announcing what the VIP points sets are gonna be way way in advance I'll never save for them

(Yes I know I said VIP points, because I refuse to call them insiders after all this time of owning an original VIP card. Insiders is a better fit name for LAN people tbh)

My original chrome red VIP card started delaminating, and when I asked about getting a new card, I found out they don’t make them anymore. And I missed my chance at getting one of the regular red versions.

I almost always save mine up for rewards. I can't wait for those two space-themed sets from that Ideas competition to come out. As for the name, compromise. Call them Very Insider Person points.

Yeah I understand. I use my £5 off increments just to make myself feel better about spending the money. The most I had at one time was £65 immediately after buying the UCS falcon on double points (it wasn't meant it be allowed but the store computer sent it through at double points)

I had someone in one of the stores not believe my Black Millennium Falcon card was real once, that was interesting.

I didn't even know that there were physical VIP/Insiders cards before reading this! +('~`;)+

By in Netherlands,

I'm not sure why so many adults here are publicly complaining about a Batman LEGO set that's no one's forcing them to buy or spend their Insiders points on.

For those who don't already have the original BrickHeadz release, this 'special' edition is pretty neat and a bit cheaper as well, if you have the points to spare. I might've considered spending my Insiders points on it if you were able to make multiple Batmen from the bricks in the set.

I do agree the cheap polybag that has been available for well over a year isn't the greatest GWP, but that's really a First World problem, isn't it? LEGO doesn't need to give you stuff for free, so anything is better than nothing.

My original card is already over a year older than my local LEGO Store. I do have a Black Card, but I don’t want to start carrying that, knowing it’ll end up getting scuffed and scratched.

There have been four physical cards used, that I’m aware of. The first one, I only saw once in 2006. They were one-time use punch cards, with different dollar increments in boxes around the edges. As you spent, they would punch boxes according to your total. Once you completed a card, you could cash it in for a fixed discount. It was only usable in LEGO Stores, not online. The closest store was about six hours away, I think the cards expired after one year, and I wasn’t likely to make it to Chicago more than once per year. I let someone local have my punches, because I wasn’t going to be able to do anything with them.

Next up was the first VIP Red card. It was white, heat laminated on both sides, and then a chrome red VIP logo was added to the top of the laminate. The next time I made it to Chicago was 2009, which is when I got mine. This time it could be used with purchases from LEGO.com too, so it was actually useful to me.

Third was another VIP Red card, but this was plastic and shaped like a traditional credit card. The logo was no longer chrome, nor was the card laminated. I have no idea when this one started or ended, but it was in use in 2007.

And in 2007, they did a one-time offer for a VIP Black card. All you had to do to get one was land a copy of the second UCS Millennium Falcon from a LEGO Store or LEGO.com between the VIP launch in October and the end of the year. And that was harder than it sounded because scalpers were trying to flip copies of the set, while AFOLs were trying to qualify for the Black card. This one was printed vertically, and would typically be custom printed with your name and existing VIP number on the card they sent you. Except in Leicester Square, where they had a box of THX-xxxx cards to hand out right at the launch. In that case, the new THX number would be flagged to your account so you could use either number.

That I know of, no VIP Blue cards have ever been issued in physical form.

Get one of those lockboxes that some stores put CMFs in and carry it in that.

You mean the ones I once saw at Target, which have a slot along one edge that allows the hang tab to extend out of the box, giving you enough room to scan the barcode at the bottom? Yeah, the box keeps the hang tab from falling out through that slot. I haven't seen any bulky protrusions on my VIP Black card that would do the same.

And holy cow those were a travesty. Over half of them were loaded backwards, so the hang tab was on the side without a slot. Only way to scan those is to take them out of the box, which they don't want to do if you haven't paid for them yet...which requires someone to scan the sucker at a checkout.

Also, I forgot two! There's also the fake VIP Black card that they sent with your VIP Black Card display set (5005747), so you can have something in the display stand if you actually carry your Black card on you. And there's the VIP Red brickbuilt card (40178). Neither is functional, of course, but they are still VIP cards nonetheless.
