Mixels series 2 building competition

Posted by ,

Now that Mixels series 2 are widely available, it's time to launch our second Mixels building competition!

It will be similar to the first one we held in March (here's the announcement and the winners) but with a few tweaks in response to comments received.

Once again, we have some fantastic prizes lined up, provided by the LEGO CEE team.

  • First prize: 70816 Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!
  • Second prize: 70815: Super Secret Police Dropship
  • Third prize: 70814 Emmet's Construct-o-Mech

To enter, simply build a Mixels 'Max' monster, from two or three (different) blue, orange or brown Mixels and post your entry to the Brickset competition pool on Flickr.

Entries will be judged primarily on the appearance of the monster -- how cool, scary, weird, whacky, inventive, imaginative it is -- but we will also be on the look-out for interesting building techniques and use of parts.

Due to criticism of the judging last time, entries made from sets from different tribes won't be accepted this time because, from an aesthetic point of view, they are at a disadvantage.

Post your entries, a maximum of two images per model, to the Flickr pool by Sunday 6 July 2014. Please make sure that the images are public and that sharing has been enabled so they can be used to illustrate future news articles without the need to for me to faff about. (See the comments below for more information about this).

Update: Given that aesthetics is the main criteria, the quality of your photographs will have a part to play. We don't expect everyone to have expensive cameras and fancy lighting setups but bear in mind that models that are well lit and photographed on a clean uncluttered background are more likely to catch the judges' eyes.

I haven't had a lot of time to try my hand at building Max models from series 2 but I had a quick try this morning and came up with this Flexers model. I'm not particularly happy with it, to be honest. I think you'll find it a lot harder to come up with pleasing models this time: the Flexers sets are full of hinges and joints and not much else and the Frosticons don't have much in the way of joints. I haven't tried with the brown tribe yet.

So, good luck, I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Terms and conditions

  • Prizes are as noted above.
  • To be considered, entries must be photographed and uploaded to the Flickr Group set up for this competition, be set to public, and have sharing enabled. Therefore entrants will need a Flickr (Yahoo) account to enter.
  • Entrants may enter as many times as they like, but only two uploads per entry are permitted.
  • Entries must state which sets have been used and the model must use only the parts in the sets chosen.
  • The competition begins on Monday 9th June 2014 and will close at the end of Sunday 6th July 2014. Entries received after this date will not be considered.
  • Winners will be announced by Friday 11 July 2014.
  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Winners will be announced on Brickset and contacted via Flickr by Friday 11 July 2014.

By in United States,

I was going to complain about not having enough time, seeing as that they're technically "sold out" at shop.lego.com, but if we have until July that works for me.

By in United States,

If I buy any Mixels it will be from the third wave.

By in United Kingdom,

can you please enforce the two pictures per model rule this time, lots of people didn't follow it last time and I thought it was a bit unfair to those who did.

Very excited to see a series two competition though, and the fact that Benny's Spaceship Spaceship SPACESHIP is first prize is giving me more and more reason to enter!

By in United Kingdom,

The default for my photos is "all rights reserved" and I don't know what to change it to (as far as I can see, it's either that or a ton of different Creative Commons licenses, which I don't want or know which is the right one to use), but I do allow sharing and embedding of my photos by default. Is the all rights reserved going to be a problem for you Huw, as you've posted one of my "all rights reserved" photos before without problem?

Or if you know what settings that I can set my account to regarding changing "all rights reserved" Huw, please tell me, 7 months on Flickr and I'm still a Flickr novice :-)

I've already got three Mixels to upload, so as soon as I get an answer to this, I can upload them :-)

By in United Kingdom,

^ I think it's the setting on https://www.flickr.com/account/privacy/ , 'Allow others to share your stuff'. I'll remove the bit about 'all rights reserved' as that's not relevant to being able to show them here.

@shib, OK, we'll keep a closer eye out for digressions this time.

By in United Kingdom,

Thanks Huw, I bought it up last time but it was late in the competition so I think it would have been hard to go through and moderate - also noticed people weren't very good at reading the rules last time from comments so think that's why...not much can be done about that though! :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ Thanks Huw, I've got no problems then as I always allow sharing :-)

By in United States,

Those are some excellent prizes. We can submit more than one model so is there a chance that one person could win all three prizes?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Out of curiosity, does building a model with two Mixels that is better than one with three count for more? With the more limited pieces, you know, it may affect the score a bit. Are you guys doing this?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ It will be hard to judge that level of detail.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I might pick up some Orange ones with the TLM DVD. I may enter this, even though I'll have to make a Flickr account. I don't mind that for a SPACESHIP!

Gravatar
By in Indonesia,

dang, they haven't available yet in my country. let's hope that i can manage to catch up to this contest.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Im working on my builds now, and these stinking orange creatures have the worst assortment of parts :P

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Wait, why can't we use Mixels from Series 1 now?
Do I really have to buy 3 new ones just to be able to enter?
I wanted to enter last time but my camera died on me.
And now I'm just done like that?

As you may see, I do not like that one bit.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, pretty bummed they're all sold out.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ Perfect presentation, well lit and a plain background, as indeed are all the entries so far. Thanks!

@Jiraiya, sorry, we did series 1 last time.

@mmillers, if availability is still an issue towards the end of June I'll extend the deadline.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I read the terms and conditions and, as I understand it, I can enter as many builds as I want but only two photos per build. Is this correct?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Yes, exactly.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw, thanks, I'll be checking their availability daily.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw Good to know, thanks. :)

Gravatar
By in Malaysia,

No Series 2 available in my place. Hope I can make it before dateline.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice, I already have my first entry!!
But, I have a weird question:
I made for my Max Frosticon (that I created for the competition) two different mouth designs, and I think that both look really nice. So I don't know which one to post. Could I post it as two different creations (one with the first mouth design and the other one with the second design), or is it still too similar to be counted for another one?
If I can't do that should I just posted as a secondary picture?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Post them as two entries. Maybe leave it a day or so so that they are not together in the competition pool.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yay!!! I've built my first entry already, I'll be posting it on Flickr soon!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw, sorry if you've addressed this before, but have you given any thought to Eurobricks-style voting, with members getting a certain amount of points to award the entries? Just thought that might make for a fun and interactive process for everyone, even those of us who can't or won't be entering.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can we use the spare parts included in the bags?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ No, but I will do

^ Yes

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Huw, are we allowed using parts from our collection? But if anyone near newmarket is having availability issues, go to mastermind on younge street in holland landing, thay have all, i was there yesterday to pick up Tremor Track Infiltration.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ No, only parts in the sets you've chosen.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Ok. Thats all!:D

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just here to let everyone know that Series 2 (minus Tentro) is available for the US on shop.lego.com

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Huw, I see a couple of random pictures in the submission that it might make sense to delete...one of a load of headless mini figures and one of a random child.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So I started a brand new Flickr account for this competition yesterday and so far my photostream only has two photos (those of my first mixel). I made sure all my privacy settings were right and added them to the competition pool, but when I look at the pool without being logged into Flickr, they do not appear. After a bit of research I found a Flickr help page that says you need to have at least 5 public photos in your stream and then wait a few days before they begin to appear in groups. Just a heads up to anyone who is creating a Flickr account for this.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ Done, thank you. There are some great submissions already, I see!

^ Thanks for that useful information, it may explain why someone had problems posting them last time.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Finally got round to taking a picture of my weird Frosticon max and putting it up. Might do another if I have the time.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I was building with my son yesterday morning, and his fun was trying to use ALL the parts from the blue tribe to create a new "family" of characters. Would that be an acceptable entry or we need to shoot each one separately? We're not trying to bend the rules here, we just want to be fair while doing something a little bit different.

(sorry if this is a double post, it seems it didn't go through the first time)

Gravatar
By in Norway,

I see some complaining about Mixels not avaliabel yet. Stil not in Norway to, but I got them from Lego [email protected] for my country. I hope I going to enter this time also.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Are we allowed to build a duo, such as a rider and mount or person and dog?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Sure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it possible for the same person to win twice?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hi, i just mad a Flickr account for this, is this what i need for the sharing requirements?: http://prntscr.com/3v6k2v
Thanks

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I have thr complete series 1 and 2 now! What to build.....?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^^^ Yes

^^^ Yes

^^ Yes

Gravatar
By in United States,

lol, ok thanks

Gravatar
By in United States,

Series 1 was easier.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Congrats for the competition, Huw.
Can a two-piece stand be used to support the model?
Thanks in advance.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

How do you understand the mailing address of the winners on Flickr to send the prizes? For example, on Flickr I'm Sampras19 but how do you understand that on brickset I'm AleRiz and how can you contact me without that other participants get cocky giving false information?
