21353 The Botanical Garden revealed!
Posted by Huw,
Here's the press release for the 61st LEGO Ideas set, based on Goannas89's Botanical Garden project that passed review in December last year:
21353 The Botanical Garden
Rated 18+, 3,792 pieces
€329.99 / $329.99 / £289.99
Available at LEGO.com from 1st November
Today, the LEGO Group announces its latest addition to the LEGO Ideas collection – the stunning LEGO Ideas The Botanical Garden set.
Botanical enthusiasts and LEGO fans alike can now immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of a Victorian-style botanical garden. This 3,792-piece set allows builders to explore a meticulously crafted glasshouse with three atriums, each filled with intricate details and over 35 plant species. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, this set offers a delightful escape into a world of flora and fauna.
The main atrium features a spiral staircase leading to an observation deck, offering breathtaking views of two large exotic trees. The two smaller atriums house an arid garden filled with impressive cacti and a cosy café where visitors can relax. Outside, the gardens are adorned with colourful peonies and other vibrant plants, creating a picturesque scene that’s perfect for display.
The set was designed by Italy-based LEGO fan Valentina Bima as part of the LEGO Ideas programme. Once designed, 10,000 people voted for it to be made into a real set.
Talking about her design, Valentina said, “I’ve been a fan of LEGO since I was a child, and wanted to create a design that combined my love for botanical gardens and my favourite element - all transparent elements. The elements of this colour allow you to break down the external-internal border; the transparent elements allow you to build buildings, vehicles, spaceships or anything you can imagine with a pleasant and captivating external shape, allowing you to see the internal details and the LEGO Minifigures”.
This set includes 12 LEGO minifigures, the most ever included in a LEGO Ideas set*, featuring four staff members (the manager, two gardeners, and a barista) and various visitors. Additionally, the set comes with assorted animal figures, including a dog, a squirrel, a bunny, four bird figures, and a beetle element, bringing the botanical garden to life.
The LEGO Ideas The Botanical Set is available for LEGO Insiders from 1st November 2024 at www.LEGO.com/Garden and LEGO Stores for all from 4th November priced at €329.99 / £289.99 / $329.99 / 429.99 CAD / 499.99 AUD / 2799 CNY / 135990 HUF / 7999 MXN.
In addition, between 1st – 7th November, all purchasers of the LEGO Ideas The Botanical Set will receive 5009005 Entrance Gate as a gift with purchase.
Additional images are available in the database.
* It seems LEGO forgot about 21336 The Office, with fifteen minifigures, and 21337 Table Football, which has 22.

Looks like I'm selling 41757 and picking this up.
It's nice, the price-per-brick is good (but may be bulked up with small flower parts), but it is very pricey for a non-licenced set. I wonder if there will be many takers?
fabulous set.
No. Too cramped.
Several 41757 would make for a much better build.
CAD exchange rate makes me want to cry ?? $330 USD vs $430 CAD is insane
I have no plans to buy this set, but I do like it very much. The staircase design using the fence pieces is particularly nice!
Easily a day one buy. And in my opinion, better than the original submission.
Beautiful set! The price is killing me though, $430 CAD seems like a lot for a single set even by today's Lego standards :(
It's perfect and not overpriced well done Lego. The clear plastic doesn't even look cloudy!
Absolutely beautiful. No idea if I'll have space or budget for it, but congrats to the designer!
I like it, but lowkey I think the Friends set 41757 looks better and has more impressive plant builds
$365 in Sweden, moving on.
Those new corner glass roof panels are great.
The set does look great.
But not 330€-great.
So I'll pass on it until I eventually find it with at least a 20% discount on Amazon or Fnac or alike.
I can't justify buying this with what I've spent recently and plan to spend on new sets in the next month or so. I'll have to get some of the newer parts and colours from Bricks and Pieces when they become available.

Technically we are paying less then Americans tho
Also the press release says most minifigs in a ideas set, not true The office set had 15
Baseplates! I did not expect that!

You know you are looking at renders?
I like it. It's obviously expensive (in absolute terms), but it may well be worth the money. I might buy this eventually.
I find it very interesting (as in curious) that it follows the design cues of 41757 which is a fantastic set and which I own. Not sure what to make of this. Appears to be a strange move to me; again not necessarily in a negative way, just curious about the reasoning behind that (e.g., why is a design approved that is basically like an existing set?)
It's nice but I already picked up two of the Friends 41757 which saves me $150.

I don't think they are renders, but actual photos. For example, the image with the lady holding the scissors, you can see specks of dust and smudges on the window panes. I would not expect these in renders.
Revealed, again, for the first time!!
That's quite a chunk of change. The lifestyle video looks good (clear plastic). I think I'll need to see a review to be sure.
The GWP needs to be more substantial at this price point, but it's a smart idea. It's got me thinking about it.
Has anyone seen the beetle? I can't find it.
Edit: Nevermind. It's just a lame printed dot piece.
Poison Ivy's lair
Such an amazing set, just much too expensive

Yeah, but they aren't all renders. Do they look cloudy in the lifestyle images and video to you?
Well I absolutely love the design, its a great center piece for anyone who likes the Botanical sets like myself... Though may have to have my Groot brick builts staging a plant rescue on it. It feels kinda small for a £290 set though. A huge part of the piece count is made up of the small flower and leaf pieces afterall so we can't just it by price per piece or the parts count for terms of value for money.
I thought the Friends version would have killed any chance for this one. SO glad it didn't. This is magnificent. My Mum used to love Kew Gardens and the proportions of this are more like Kew's Palm House than the original submission. All that is missing from the minifigs is an elderly lady in a wheelchair to push around! Best set of the year. Day 1 purchase, and worth every penny.

At least it's better than the actual exchange rate at this time...where US$330 is now CDN$456!
But, yes, I feel your pain regarding the average LEGO USD-CDN exchange of 1.3x
It's so nice! But also €330... It's going on the wishlist, perhaps there will be a good deal... someday ^_^'
That's.....not a good price. At least not downunder, anyway.
The price…
Very beautiful but another insane price. This is the future of LEGO I guess!
EDIT: by "insane" I don't mean "not worth it", I just mean a lot of money in absolute terms (for a toy).

Finally, a batman set that isn't just another bat-vehicle!
I think this is ridiculously overpriced but a lovely set. However, it would need to be drastically discounted for me to buy it. I think Lego are getting too greedy these days.
I was interested but... it's too expensive!
sorry lego, but... shelf!
A great piece to look at when it'll be at display at the LEGO Store, because it's truly beautifully executed, but I can imagine the price will scare off most people who are potentially interested in it.
I like it, but I'm not sure how it will fit in my Australian-inspired LEGO City. Most of our botanic gardens are fully outdoors and much larger (the ones in Sydney and Canberra are great examples), so I'm not sure how this would work. I'd probably just MOC my own version, although this would certainly work as a conservatory. That said though, I'll need to find a reasonable amount of space. It's also just a little too expensive for my liking. I'll have to think about it.
Also, is it just me or does the third minifigure from the right look like Joe Biden?
I would love to buy this within the first week of purchase, but whether it's financially possible I don't know, what with bricklink being shipped and just getting back from a long weekend in Windsor and London over half term.
Might have to spend some of VIP points ...
Speaking of, early access for Insiders 1/11-3/11.
So what's the set launching in the live event? The Endurance, maybe?
I think I'll get this instead of X-Men mansion for my modular building city. Better looking, more detailed, easier to integrate.

Guess you are right. On that pic there is also a 1x2 tan plate that shows a sprue mark
It even has a George Lucas minifig for those Star Wars fans out there.
Very nice. A day 1 purchase for me.
However, as a keen gardener, bunnies and squirrels may be cute but you don't want the barstewards anywhere near your garden....

They did this back in the 10260 Downtown diner, and remember thinking it was a very clever technique, despite the fact that you can't pose any figs on it etc.
This is beautiful! Definitely worth saving a few paychecks for!
Between this and the X-Men Mansion is about $700 with taxes and it is not even black friday, plus we have new modular drop and the gwp. This is going to kill my wallet :(
If Ideas sets are releaed on Brickset, is it possible to get pictures of the original submissionl, too or is there a legal barrier?
It’s lovely and well worth buying hopefully at discount. I’d much rather exchange minifigures for build size on this set.
Its worth noting that character based set X-Mansion got less figures.
I love it, it’s beautiful. Lots of glass. Nice new glass piece! Lots of minifigures! So many plants represented. Great parts usage—love the spiral staircase using the lattice/fence part. Genius! This looks like a really fun build. It’s a really lovely set. Just wow.
I love it all SO MUCH apart from... sigh... the stickers.
@jkb The original submission is linked at the beginning of the article. I always like to compare them as well.
Is this the biggest deviation from the original submission we've had so far?
I refuse to accept the usage of "atriums" as the plural of atrium.
If they'd gone with the correct "atria", I would have bought this set. With that egregious error, I'll instead have to use the money to pay the rent.

Thanks for your comment! I did not know that the same technique was also used in the Downtown Diner set. I only got back into LEGO in 2019 and never really took a more careful look at the sets released in earlier years.
It will also be a nice bonus if, as rumoured, the Reading, Reading, Reading GWP overlaps (and doesn't sell out)!

I just realized that this and 76294 go on sale at the same time, for the same price, and both have exclusive GWPs. Hmmmm...
Glad I don't have to spend $700, but it's still gonna hurt!
I think modular building fans will jump on this one quick.
Looks like a nightmare to move , as it doesn't seem to split down the middle to seperate the baseplates.
But since the building seems elevated (also often done to avoid massive plates on top of baseplates directly as LEGO does not like to connect too many studs, as seen with City cars having gaps with tiles in the frame), maybe it can come off completely.
Lovely set. Now we see what that "banana peel" part was really for!

Just a query and\or suggestion for you two, and anyone thinking of going down this road:
How much do you think you'll be able to resell 41757 for? I would guess that the money your recoup won't go very far towards a copy of this new set.
Might it be worth considering keeping the older set to complement, or even expand upon the new one?
If I ever had the cash or space for 21353, I'd use the parts from 41757 to 'grow' the new one to make it look more like the original Ideas submission; a third level with a cupola above it would be most impressive...
Interestingly, this is categorised this as a Modular on the Lego website:
https://www.lego.com/en-gb/categories/modular-buildings
Looks wonderful, so bright and so many flowers. The friends one had more interesting plants, I think.
The GWP fits perfectly but it's on a plate not a baseplate...

Yes, it is a better version than the original submission (which is rare for Lego Ideas) and bases it much more on reality as it now does bear a resemblance to Kew Gardens.
I don't see any frogs... 0/10.

"CAD exchange rate makes me want to cry ?? $330 USD vs $430 CAD is insane "
With CAD current exchange rate, Canadians actually pay the least for most sets; right now 330 USD = 456 CAD . If you go to a set page (i.e. 75374) and click on "Prices" tab you should see the CAD equivalents.
It looks neat. They did a good job with it. I am surprised it is so similar to the Friends version in such a short amount of time. Maybe all botanical gardens are white with sand green windows?
I think ultimately if I was going to pick any up, I'd buy a few of the Friends one and build something bigger. But since money is finite, I will have to skip the theme altogether.
love it, but not at that price
I am BEYOND dissapointed.
For this price you can get F O U R Friends Botanical Gardens. F O U R.
Thats WAY more bricks!
Also this set has really borrng plant builds...Mostly using basic flowers. Friends meanwhile had NPU all the way.
While more representation is always good, the blind man looks a bit like he's casting a spell over the flowers. His cane needs to be longer.
Love the (new?) tulip pieces, but they look a little stunted. Wonder whether green "candle" pieces might help?
Could turn the friends one into a different wing. Maybe put more exotic plants in there.

I think Steamboat Willie, The Pirate Bay, and Medieval Blacksmith are far bigger departures from their original submissions. I much prefer the original Botanical Garden.
I’m changing my mind (again). This redesign seems to use parts from the Friends set for convenience/ production cost saving? Now I wish I hadn’t looked at the original! It’s comparatively a crystal palace. I want the original designer’s parts list please.
The Friends version was half price in some Sainsbury’s. I intend to build a black Victorian iron version with some of those parts.
I love fungus but these are best cultivated in cool shade, I believe they have no real place in a hot house!
So which came first? The friends set, the original submission, then the ideas set?
Having a small chuckle at some of the mini figure expressions - maybe they’ve just been told the price of the set!
Amazing how similar the color scheme is to the Friends set. I wound up buying x2 of the friends botanical garden and even with this reveal, I don't regret doing so. While indeed being a cool model, this is just a bit too big and pricey for me anyways.

The Ideas submission was quite a while before the Friends release... No idea how long the Friends set had been worked on before release though.

Well, $USD is actually $456 CAD, so the retail price is actually ok. The exchange rate however...

I think a lot of the changes were more about detail and realism than cost-cutting — especially since the final set introduces two new molds to achieve its roof shape! The final set replaces the single enormous curved sheets of glass in the original project with smaller window panels that more closely resemble the sort of historic greenhouses that Valentina said inspired her submission. The designers also consulted with Valentina about the updates they made to the color scheme and architecture, so it's not as though she was left out of the process.
Of course, none of that is to say that these changes were insignificant, or that you're wrong for preferring the original build! Just that I understand the reasons for some of those changes, and I wouldn't chalk them up to cost when it might have actually been cheaper to stick with many of the arch pieces and transparent panels from the original proposal.
So many awesome new elements and recolors, I really like this set. With that being said, the design is very reminiscent of the 41757, which is kind of disappointing as I would have hoped for something different. I suppose it could be nice as you could add onto that set if you have one, or two. I don't know, I really want to like this set, but it's almost $400!
Beautiful set. If they’d have found a way to make it under $200, I’d be a buyer.

Strongly disagree with people who are saying the ideas set is worse than 2x friends sets...
Architecturally the new building is 5x better and pleasing to the eye. Look at how well it is polished from outside! Fits much better to the Lego city. Personally I don't care much about plants.
The only downside is obviously the price

I see (although they don't) Thanks for the information.
Beautiful but that price point is crazy for me. I also wish with this many minifigures you got some skin tone variation. I think I'll finally get the friends botanical garden set.
Looks great!
And with real minifigures this time instead of grotesque minidolls!
Also happy to see the base plate. I'm not a fan of the "built up bases" so many sets have been coming with lately that don't add to it. (Examples: It added to the Horizon Tallneck, but not to the Galileo GWP.)

Don't get me started. Insurance industry, argh! The bane of my existence!
Love it. Curious large number of minifigures, but ok. Really great design, though. Looks like the one on Belle Isle in Michigan. Suspect it was a highly profitable design as the part count is fluffed up in those small details, but nonetheless a really nice set.
$NZ 550 :( So might get it if I can find it at 20% off somewhere.
I'm glad LEGO finally released an expensive set I have little to no interest in. It's definitely well designed and if you like this kind of thing, great! But I have no use for it in my collection, so finally I get to save some money by passing on a LEGO set lol.
Must be full of creeper vines, because the LEGO price creep on even non-IP sets is growing rampant.

I really like it, but undecided.. Maybe next year!
I think it’s a beautiful set. Loving the banana peel used as leafs, and animal crossing will be happy with tulips.
But why is the birds nest inside the botanical garden.
Also the blind man has a better expression for prof X(avier) of the X-men than prof X has now.
Stunning set. Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh in my local LEGO shop.
I like the look of it but not the price. I rather spend 300€ on loose bricks from different LEGO Stores to build my own botanical garden. But thats just me.
I have one question though. Does it belong in the Modular Building line? Its tagged as IDEAS and in my opinion it makes no sense beside last years Museum of History nor any other previous Modular Building. It is also not meant to be connected to such as it hasnt got the technic pins..
So, is this realy the next modular in the line or is it just an IDEAS Modular?
This is confusing..

I used to be a big yellow minifig fan but D&D CMF has converted me to human skin tone minifigs
It looks nice, but I wonder, how many people will be willing to spends €330 on something like this? I'd think quite some people will skip this set either because of price or the size. Or both. And considering the design, I wonder if it wouldn't have been possible to make a set of just half the garden, in a way that you could buy two and combine them into the full thing. Obviously with some alterations between the halves to not make it look like you just put two of them together.
Thank God for the affordable Friends botanical gardens set.
Beautiful design and gorgeous details (although I did love the incredible attention paid to the plants in the original submission). Importing some of the plants and details from the Friends version will be fun, so I'm not going to dispose of my 41757 set. Definitely a Day One purchase for me!
Fantastic

Honestly I don't care that this isn't a modular building. For three reasons:
1. I don't collect modulars
2. It's incredibly easy to modify it to be compatible with modular buildings
3: It looks a lot better on its own than it would lined up with a bunch of big-city structures
I would've bought the set either way. I just appreciate it for what it is.

"It's perfect and not overpriced well done Lego. The clear plastic doesn't even look cloudy!"
You know you are looking at renders?
"
I don't think they are renders, but actual photos. For example, the image with the lady holding the scissors, you can see specks of dust and smudges on the window panes. I would not expect these in renders."
Render software these days has options for everything from sprue marks, to specks of dust, microscratches as well as any other kind of imperfections, to make it look more realistic.
So, since LEGO has a history of deliberately lying, deceiving and cheating in official publicity materials versus the final product, I won't get my hopes up for these trans-clear pieces to look any less milky and bluish-purple than all the others since their switch to MABS.
I'd love to be proven wrong, since I really like the design of this, but I have a bad feeling about this.
Plus, as has been pointed out, the wrong "fact" about the number of minifigs just shows that they don't even know their own products - or that they just don't care (which seems more realistic).
I dunno. I feel like the Friends one does it better.
I thought this would be a no-brainer for me, but seeing the design, layout, and parts usage, I'm less impressed than I thought I would be. Especially for $320, this is a set I'd need to love to justify the price. Ultimately, the design of the plants and interior is way less creative than the smaller Friends botanical set - whose use of saxophone, pallette, fur coat, waterfall, and other elements was really really cool, and drew a lot of non-Friends fans to the set for that reason.
I was expecting the same level of creativity here, and unfortunately, I don't think its there. Granted, the structure is magnificent, but it seems to rely more on spamming new elements (roses, tulips, and new glass pieces) than trying to make really creative use of existing/recolored parts.
Speaking of new parts, am I the only one thinking the new corner pieces are cloudier than the other roof glass elements? Maybe I'm just seeing things...
I'd rather buy a couple of the Friends gardens and put them together in my own moc that I'd probably enjoy more at lower cost, instead of splurging on this.
While the set is superb, I think the GWP is a bit pants! On the hopelessly presented live stream, when there was a question about how it connected to the main building there was just a vague waffled reply about customising it and putting it anywhere you liked.
Actually looks like a few spare parts that don't fit anywhere!
It's beautiful! Could the photographer minifig be another sighting of The Donut Thief?? The Entrance Gate GWP looks fairly easy to recreate... but I still want it.
Are there any pictures alongside modular buildings?
I think this is great, but bad timing as I just finished my own modular version of 41757...but perhaps I can modify it again to fit into this building, and make it one full complex.
It is quite expensive but I am in Hong Kong where the cheapest LEGO can be found...so I will just wait for a short moment to get this...
Set of the year (at least for me) :)
This looks great and fits with my main interest in anything botanical / nature themed.
I wish they printed some white vertical mullion/rafter lines on the curved glass pieces. It's a major part of the wrought iron character of Victorian conservatories, which this set clearly takes inspiration from.
A gorgeous set!
And I don’t mind the GWP either.
Just that price is horrendous ($500 in Australia, or about a week’s rent for many people!) - LEGO ‘taking the piss’ on their customers, yet again!!
I’m also curious to see it built in-store being buying it - if the ‘glass’ roof panels are milky and not clear, it may cheapen and ruin the entire set!….

Probably not as you wouldn't find a glass house right next to another building in real life.
Sure wish lego would stop butchering such lovely products.
This is definitely day one for me. I need to figure out how to attach my Friends botanical MOC into this one.
It looks great - I have a fondness for these wrought-iron & glass conservatories. I also love the new plant pieces & builds
Would a central tower for a palm tree from the original submission have made such a difference to the price. The side wings are very small, just enough space for the barista. Interesting to see if those new curved skylights start appearing in train and space stations.
"* It seems LEGO forgot about 21336 The Office, with fifteen minifigures, and 21337 Table Football, which has 22."
LEGO forgets all sorts of things. Like which way the Blacktron logo goes. On the 40580 Blacktron Cruiser, the instructions direct you to apply the logo sticker upside-down. Twice.
It looks like maybe this is compatible with the Japanese Tea Garden set, with the modular trees and bases.

And this is why LEGO made the right choice in un-modularizing it.

Yes, my thoughts exactly! It would be ridiculous as a Modular, but I'm sure that anyone who desperately wants one can find 4 spare Technic pins somewhere!

I just picked up a second Friends botanical garden set to build the moc that's available

"Strongly disagree with people who are saying the ideas set is worse than 2x friends sets...
Architecturally the new building is 5x better and pleasing to the eye. Look at how well it is polished from outside! Fits much better to the Lego city. Personally I don't care much about plants.
The only downside is obviously the price "
You can get FOUR Friends gardens for this price."
And it still wouldn’t look nearly as good as this one…
"
That depends how you build xD
I like it. Like it enough to go for it? Ehh, hoping for some reviews before release. I do have enough VIP points to cover the cost, plus getting the concurrent GWPs at release.
Looks like it would be a bit delicate to move being spanned across baseplates.
I feel the Friends one (or a custom larger version) could complement this one for holding the exotic plants. Or just move some of the exotics over to the bigger one and make room for them.
The Friends set retires this year BTW.

@granto:
My LEGO Store is built across two baseplates, and the model survived an accident that the car conveying it did not. It all depends on how you build above the baseplates, if the gap between them will be a point of instability or not. In the case of Modulars, I believe they usually split the model so each baseplate is an independent structure, at which point the seam between the two baseplates absolutely is a fragile point, being only held together by a couple of low-mounted Technic pins. If you plate over the gap at the floor level, and build the walls above that point so they're sufficiently interlaced, you should be able to pick the entire thing up without even noticing where the two baseplates meet.
GWP is so laughably bad. Nothing unique about it. I don't know if the butterfly printing is or not but everything else can be sourced. I'll be waiting for the inevitable sale.

That confirms the - expected - milkiness of the glass panels, which is especially visible in the final couple of photos in the review.

The butterfly looks like the one above the door on 21338, a set that it was previously unique to. According to Bricklink’s numbering, it was only the second butterfly print.

Which does, at least, confirm how daft it looks... what next? A lighthouse next door to the Corner Garage :-)

To be fair outside, in presumably bright sunlight, I'd be more worried about all the white bricks turning yellow! Looks fine in all the indoor photos.
