New Insiders reward: Treasure Chest

Posted by ,

If you have accumulated in excess of 2,400 Insiders points, you can now avail yourself of the latest reward: 5008945 Treasure Chest, which landed in the Insiders Rewards centre today.

The 6x10 box is equipped with a lock and key, but you may well be asking, when looking at the picture below, where does the key go?

Atypically, it's inserted in a hole in the back of the box and, when turned, it unhooks a Technic piece from a corresponding one inside.

There's quite a lot of space inside for stashing treasure!

Hidden inside the lid is a compartment in which to hide your really valuable items, such as the two gold ingots supplied in the set. It's opened by pressing in a section of the opposite side of the lid. The grooves on the tiles give it away a bit, but like all good hidden compartments, its presence and purpose is not obvious.

It's a fun little set that I think kids in particular will enjoy, so it will make a perfect stocking-filler for Christmas.

Thanks to LEGO for providing the item for this article.

I've never heard of a treasure chest unlocked from the hinge with a drum key.

Honestly pretty ugly. Simultaneously too smooth and too blocky. Maybe kids will like it, but kids aren't the ones buying Lego online with their own points accumulated in their own rewards accounts from a couple hundred of their own dollars spent on sets.

If only it was the mimic chest.

Huw's getting soft, no complains about avoidable blue technic pins.
Interesting idea but not enough to burn so many points

Interesting idea, the execution is okay. Blue pins is a big L.

I don't see anything exclusive about this "reward". I want to see the parts list. Over $20 worth of points seems ridiculous for this. What do you get? A hundred generic parts?

You are going to have to have better stuff than this to get me to redeem for this type of "reward".

2,400 points? 650 = $5 USD, so 2,400/650= ~3.7*$5 = ~$18.50. For 154 seemingly generic pieces? I agree that it'd make a good stocking stuffer, but I can't help but feel this is lacking something. I guess technically the decently long-standing "$0.10/piece" ratio would have this set at $3.10 overpriced, which really isn't that bad. Looks like a 10x6 chest? Not a terrible size, but I can't help but feel like its missing something. A minifigure, some more elusive pieces/colors, even just some more detail maybe?

I would have liked if I could add a few of these VIP/Insider Rewards to a single purchase but it seems they haven’t implemented that possibility yet, which I find frustrating. If I want to buy all 4 micro ninjago sets for example, I need to make 4 separate transactions, which is needlessly awkward and unnecessary imo.

Plus it now tells you that you need to claim your rewards code within 60 days, and if you don’t make your next purchase within this period or just forget to use your code/codes fast enough you’re out of luck.

Pins are generally color locked these day to make finding them easier in a bag of similar sized / looking parts. There is no point in complaining about something that nothing can be done about.

Quite. I accept that and it's not going to change so there's no point even mentioning it.

I do like most novelty items, but this really is rubbish. Doesn't look good. Doesn't do anything.

By in Canada,

Honestly, I find this set pretty boring. Come on Lego, you can do much better! Even if it's just for little sets that are supposed to be paid for with Insider points.

Sorry to be a smartass, but "doesn't do anything" is the one thing this set is demonstrably not guilty of!

God this is awful, can’t believe Lego even put this out

Gravatar
By in United States,

Kind of neat but man this a weak VIP reward

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not worth 2400 points. It needs a bit more shaping and complexity because it looks very unrealistic.

Only thing worth insiders points was that micro wonders set.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

The curve on the D&D lid looks much better.

This is an easy hard pass.

Fair point... just don't get too over excited turning that key!

By in United States,

It looks neat, but not for that price. But I guess rewards points are "free" so can't complain too much. LEGO doesn't have to provide any insider points if they didn't want to. But still, I'd rather spend it on other rewards like spinning keychains and posters I'll never hang up (I did buy those, I just won't use them).

Also a pass for me, I have the Mimic and this is very bland and I'll save my points for something better. Or $ off a purchase.

Some eyes, teeth, and a purple/blue tongue-like appendage?

@TheLastJedi:
Mimic, Mimicaneer, Mega Mimic, and just ordered the parts to make a Mimic Beholder. I really don’t want to buy _another_ Mimic set just to get the eyes to fix this…

By in United States,

It has some nice little functions, but it's not very pretty and quite expensive points-wise. Probably would've worked better as a small creator set or something that people could modify easily.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

So sad I'm 966 points short......now I'll never get to experience this best set Lego ever made :-(

As for the blue pins being color locked.....that doesn't take away Lego could have designed it in either a way they wouldn't be visible or used other pieces that don't stand out as much. I mean, even something as simple as black 2L pins would already be an improvement. And they do actually have brown stopper axles, couldn't they have used those sowehow?

Gravatar
By in United States,

If it really looked like a treasure chest I might be tempted. This just looks like a big brown cube pretending to be a treasure chest. As already mentioned it's way too many points for what it is. Even the brick built bricks looked better than this brown blob of a "treasure chest". I wish I could get back the extra points I overspent on the micro Ninjago sets before they lowered the points needed for those so I'm not falling into that trap for this reward.

By in New Zealand,

Not even the treasures is interesting.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I was expecting to find a pile of those dog turd pieces inside it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I always get the exclusive Insiders rewards but think I'll skip on this one. Not really feeling it for some reason. I would've loved an up-scaled version of the original treasure chest piece!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If this was a mimic or the luggage I would have jumped at it. It's pretty terrible looking even for just a trunk / treasure chest.

Wrong BS contributor. That's @CapnRex101's pet peeve. Mine's color-matching and generic SW figs.

Which is why I only redeem points for an item just before I place the order the item will accompany.

Yeah, that’s what I usually do too, just that sometimes I’m afraid the rewards could sell out so I try to get a code for it as soon as I can, but not necessarily when I’m ready to make a purchase.

TLG must be nuts if they think this is worth 2400 hard earned points.........

I love puzzle boxes and would absolutely consider this if it were a little less pricey and a little more polished.

It looks like about £3 of PAB parts.
So it should be 800 VIP, at the most 1000 VIP, to allow for packaging costs?

Gravatar

It's... a box! Ok. Weird choice, Lego.
