New minifig gallery: Speed Racer
Posted by Huw,
Continuing with licenced themes, I've added Speed Racer to the minifig gallery.
I can't say the sets, or the minifigs, are particularly exciting, though. I can't really comment on the movie: I watched the first 15 minutes or so but stopped after that as I thought it too awful. I do like the Trixie fig though: that has to be one of the coolest female torso/leg combinations: bright pink and silver :-)
Speed Racer, left, has a wonky left arm: I have two of him and the arm doesn't fit in the socket properly on either of them, despite me trying to re-locate it several times. What's it like on yours?
SpongeBob will be next...

Another nice minifig gallery, thanks Huw!
I'm the only one I know that actually enjoyed the film. It's underated. The problem is that the film seemed geared/advertised for the young adult/adult viewer. It's really a kid's film with fun cartoon imagery mixed into the live action, weird/wonky characters and just plain fun. My son and I loved it when it came out.
I do like some of the torso's on these figs for customs.
Hmmmmmmmmmm, well.
That "racer X" costume might work well on a Tron Legacy figure.
And that yellow torso with the monkey on is quite cool :D
@legoDad42: My entire family and several of my friends liked SR as well, it was a bit cartoony, but that just made it better IMO.
I always wondered what was under Racer X's helmet (not enough to check though), how anti-climatic.
I actually own Cruncher's Driver from a case of loose LEGOs. Oh, how I hate her so. . . .
good luck with the star wars gallery huw, you'll need alot of shots for that one!
I caught a bunch of these sets on clearance a few years ago on a whim - which helped catapult me out of my "Dark Ages." I have to say, I do enjoy the Speed Racer sets, probably for that very reason.
Ohhhh....Speed Racer.... *goes to barf* :P
Nice. 'Cept i don't like Speed racer. :D Good job anyway.
Woo-hoo! I've always been a fan of Speed Racer- the TV show, not the movie (which in my opinion had like nothing to do with the TV show). Anyway I thought this was a cool theme, too bad they didn't promote it too much. And really Jonbuddy, is it that bad? =)
The thing I liked about those sets was those new windshields.
I didn't grow up on the cartoon but I do enjoy the live-action movie a lot.
I mean, it's a live-action movie that's based on a cartoon, and the movie has cartoon characters, cartoon dialogues, cartoon physics, and cartoon plot!
I thought it was pretty dead-on. :)
I'm not sure what the fans expected. The TV show with better animation? That would have sucked.
Thanks Huw! Although I didn't like the Speed Racer theme or the movie, I appreciate you posting this gallery for us. The minifigs are so-so, although that monkey-shirt might make for some interesting MOCs. Anyways, thanks again for the hard work!
I think I bought all these sets when I saw them reduced, mainly for the figures and the cars. I love all their torso designs, and especially Taejo Tokokahn for that dragon that continues onto his leg! Cool faces too.
wait...they did a speed racer line? did it show up in the US?
Great job Huw. Although, that wonky arm irks me a bit. Too bad you couldn't get it to fit. Anyway, Sponge Bob should be nice. Will you be updating the gallery once the new summer wave minifigs are introduced?
@Zrath
I think I may have said the wrong thing- I think what I meant was that if you compared the TV show to the movie, they're not too alike. But still, you have a good point.
Funny ironicy : Speed Racer the movie was on Cartoon Network tonight.
That's a shame, 'cause I *adored* the movie. Matthew Fox fighting ninjas! You can't go wrong with that.
Anyway. I never did buy any of the sets.
OK it's a little off topic but I don't have any of the sets and didn't see the movie. But I do remember coming home from school and watching Speed Racer everyday. I even had the lunch box and matching thermos. The new picture galleries are good though. Far better than Bricklink.
I wonder if this theme was also to prevent "The-Bloks-that-must-not-be-named" from acquiring the liscense.
As some of the others said, I think the movie was a good blend of live action trying to look like an animation. Maybe it was just because I didn't expect much from it, being an American interpretation of a Japanese drift racing animation.
On the other hand, most of the minifigures and sets weren't too interesting to me. I only got a few. I liked Trixie even if her skirt only covers the front, Gray Ghost, Taejo (with dragon), and Pops (cause he looks like Mario!!)
Looking through the galleries again....I think Speed Racer (in blue shirt and helmet)instead of Trixie should be the opening image on the MiniFig Browser. His fig. better represents the theme instead of Trixie.
Also Woody instead of the Alien dudes for Toy Story as well.
