City Advent Calendar - Day 1

Posted by ,

It's that time of the year again! Last year's City Advent Calendar made for a very charming scene, with some great minifigs and some great builds (who can forget the penguin ice sculpture?), so this year's advent calendar sets some high expectations.

My only reservation is that I see this calendar clocks in a 195 pieces, but you don't need a lot of pieces for great builds, right?

The front of the box shows a house with some festive lighting on a snowy street, with minifigures partaking in outdoor activities. A cheery Santa is found in the lower right corner.

The back of the box shows a few scenes that will be portrayed as we discover the builds behind the doors.

Despite the graphics on the front of the box, the flap folds down to show an indoor scene. A train track shows that we can expect a train at some point, a staple in advent calendars.

We'll move on to opening door number 1!

We have a rather nice minifigure today! A child with a festive sweater - with a bulldozer (or is that a snowplow?) design. I love the grappling hook on there, too. The back of the sweater shows a Christmas tree.

The child also comes with a helmet and snowboard, so they are definitely ready for action.

This is a rather auspicious start - I like that the minifig comes with some accessories. And at least they have a sweater to go outside, unlike Paisley from earlier today!

I just realized that advent calendars are great accessory packs. Might pick one up in the Boxing Day sales.
I just wish they did a D&D one...

They're great on discount but you may run out in shops before then. They're normally on sale in the likes of Smyths as December goes on and advent is passing.

Another thing they're usually good for are the numerous Christmas jumpers that are great for populating a Winter village or any Christmas scene.

That's a great start, and the callendar promisses more wins.

Just imagine putting a thruster on that snow board

I found the Star Wars and Spidey Advent Calendars at $20 USD this year, as well as Harry Potter last year. But it's a gamble. Some years the ACs seem to get wiped out and others they linger on Amazon clearance forever.

I'm pretty sure those are bulldozers, as that doesn't seem to be a grappling hook, but the hook from a construction crane.

I finished building the Holiday Main Street set yesterday and I'm gonna add the advent calendar goodies into the scene as we go along.

And that's a pretty jarring interior flap, showing what appears to be the floorplan of a house without the actual house represented in any fashion.

Grappling hooks usually have multiple points, because a single hook is likely to just lie flat and slide right over anything it could grab onto. But I admit I was wondering what Captain Hook's hook has to do with Christmas.

Is there a way to remove this type of article from my feed? No offense; I don't care for the advent articles.

With trying to be a bit more selective with Lego recently I didn’t even bother to check out the advent calendars this year, only to discover how brilliant this one looks to be at the point where it’s almost impossible to get hold of in the U.K.!

My first year with a City Advent Calendar, given to me as a birthday present two months ago. I am delighted with this minifig, a strong start I must say.

My guess for the hook is something like the one in 60409

Today’s snowboarder is our first kid minifigure. His accessories and top are great! I don’t like that the kid size means he can’t sit down but it’s a minor issue. He’s already joined the party at our first set, 60376 and riding the snowmobile with his board clipped on the back.
