Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 14
Posted by CapnRex101,
2012 was another impressive year for LEGO Star Wars and there are lots of appealing subjects to choose for the Advent Calendar, so I am keen to see what emerges.
Find out below...
I mentioned the odd mixing of source materials for the T-6 shuttle yesterday and this model of a Kom'rk-class fighter, also known as a Gauntlet Starfighter, is quite similar. Based on the pattern of the Advent Calendar so far, it is presumably based on 9525 Pre Vizsla's Mandalorian Fighter from 2012, although the colour scheme is closer to 75316 Mandalorian Starfighter from 2021.
Furthermore, its basic silhouette could cause confusion with the Mandalorian Fang Fighter, as the Fang Fighter and the Kom'rk seem relatively similar when simplified to such a degree. I do like the engines and the circular docking hatch, but I still consider this to be among the weaker mini vehicles from the Advent Calendar.
Overall - I am glad to see another vehicle make its Advent Calendar debut, but its execution is mixed.

Why didn't they use the pointy wedge plates that were in today's Harry Potter build?
Here is today's ranking (in my opinion):
6. Friends
5. Star Wars
4. Disney
3. Spider-Man
2. City
1. Harry Potter
I'm a bit disappointed that this isn't a mini-scale jabba's palace, but maybe it's even a no-go in mini scale since *the incident*
After all, I recall that this set was not widely available everywhere.
Either way, I feel like they could have done better, even at this scale. The coloration doesn't do it favors, and the wings aren't pointy like they could be. That said, this year's anniversary theme continues to be fun in that it gives us plenty of rarely adapted spacecraft. For that alone I'm okay with it being the fang fighter. Oh, and another prequel-era mini-build is never a bad thing.
It's kind of fun to see the overall changes of the entire theme through the calender. We're now in the era where the Clone Wars reigned supreme so there's less OT stuff. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.
Day 2 of having no idea what I just built! To paraphrase a certain Sith Lord "I find your lack of knowledge disturbing".
Oooh, yeah, not sure that really works at all. Looks more like the Gungan sub from Phantom Menace than any of the Mandalorian fighters
No comment here again, just a nice build.
This is less a micro fighter, and more a chibi fighter.

I'ma have to ask what *the incident* was now...
@Binnekamp:
From what I remember of the timing, TLG did nothing to actually respond to that complaint except verify the likely-original retirement date. Rancor pit came out one year later, and Jabba’s Palace was carried over for an extra year. Rancor Pit had a normal lifespan, and it made sense to retire them at the same time, as happened with the Winter Village train and train station. Truth was told, and the guy went away celebrating how he’d slain the windmill.
@alLEGOry_HJB2810:
Jabba’s Palace is famously similar in design to the Hagia Sophia, which was built as an Eastern Orthadox cathedral (370-1204), then briefly converted to Roman Catholicism (1204-1261), then back to Eastern Orthodox (1261-1453), and only then turned into an Islamic mosque (1453-1934) before being deconsecrated and turned into a museum (1935-2020). While it has once again been turned into a mosque, it was still a museum at the time someone from elsewhere in Europe got upset when a family member gifted another family member a copy of 9516. Said it cast Muslims in a bad light, being full of rogues and villains. Note that the Hagia Sophia was, at the time, still a museum, and that it had been an Eastern Orthodox (Christian) cathedral for about two thirds of its existence, and is notable for (amongst other things) being the prototypical example of pretty much all Eastern Orthodox cathedrals that have been built ever since.
I’ve been waiting for your post today as I had no idea what it was meant to be.
Thought I had opened the wrong door today, as looks far more like 75316 than 9525
6. SW As yesterday, only it translates worse to mini-size (0 points today + 30 points previously earned = 30 points total)
5. City This isn't much (1+37=38)
4. Fr Okay accessories (2+27=29)
3. Dis Colours give it its presence. (3+32=35)
2. HP I was sure this would finish dead last today. The only good of the statues, inspired by c31 birds? (4+30=34)
1. SM This makes me smile (5+32=37)
As already mentioned above, it looks a lot like the Gungan Sub.
Still like it, even though the colors are a bit off.

Nothing wrong with the Originals, though.

I also thought it was a Gungan Sub. Not the best model today.

@PurpleDave
Jabba's Palace appeared in the 2016 advent calendar (75146), and, though I'm sure some people would like to forget the whole series, in a set from The Book of Boba Fett (75326).
@PurpleDave Well that's a whole lot less understandable than the Bionicle fiasco. Makes you wonder whether they were actually offended or just wanted to stir up trouble.
Just like its 2012 counterpart, it looks pretty ugly. To be fair it's not an easy vehicle to make in that tiny scale.
I thought this was the StarScavenger when I first saw it.

They better do that for 2016....even though I know they're not going too :(

The advent build was indeed the palace exterior, but it was also just one of 24 builds, not all of which are even revealed on the box. Interestingly, that year, 75146 does actually show an artistic depiction of the palace, decorated for Christmas. The model itself is not shown on the box front, though, and I’m not in the habit of hauling all the boxes around with me. @CapnRex101 has certainly evolved his reviews since 2016, as neither Day 1 nor Day 24 include a single photo of the box.
Boba Fett’s is just the throne room, and that bears no obvious resemblance to the Hagia Sophia. If they ever release Jabba’s Palace under the MBS series, you’ll know for sure that TLG made no policy changes of note following this kerfluffle.
@alLEGOry_HJB2810:
It was literally _one_guy_. And a bunch of websites blew it all out of proportion by concluding that he actually forced them to recall the set. This all happened just a couple months before that wave would have retired anyways. Do I believe the guy was legitimately offended? I have no reason not to. However, I can’t say whether he was offended personally, or on behalf of a group of people that didn’t include himself.
The Bionicle incident…is complex. For one thing, I don’t know if they ever found out who was actually protesting. One site thumbed their nose at them, and got sit down with a DNS attack, so being identified could have resulted in some legal trouble. So it could have been one person, a single group, or a bunch of unaffiliated people.
Words from real languages get used all the time, and not just the dead ones like Latin (just look at the Throwbot names). Nobody throws a fit, but I understand the Maori people are intensely protective of their language and culture. If any other language had been used, I don’t know that the situation would have blown up. And if they had simply switched Turaga and Tohunga, so the latter was used in a manner that was closer to its origin, the situation might not have blown up. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, though. Things happened the way they did, and there’s no changing it now.

Sure! I just like the variety :)
I thought this was the StarScavenger from Freemaker Adventures.
A B-Wing Representing 10227 would have been really cool
Yeah, I had to check here to see what the heck I just built, and I'm obsessed with starships!
I'm not seeing the resemblance at all, this is a weak design.

Shadow box version?

That was my first thought as well. It would be a lot easier to tell tell the front from the back.
I don't know how lore-accurate it is (never having seen the CGI Clone Wars outside of the movie), but I've got this one chasing yesterday's on the display mat.

I'm guessing they wanted that bit of color at the nose, which you wouldn't be able to do with that plate.

I've got it tucked back in the box, entombed in its plastic bag. It's the only way to ensure none of the parts get lost with the new style trays."
A lesser build for the day, but in an extremely solid calendar otherwise so far. One imperfect build out of 14 isn’t terrible.
