Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 16

Posted by ,

2014 was another incredible year for LEGO Star Wars, introducing the Microfighters series and Star Wars Rebels, while still giving attention to the Prequel and Original Trilogies.

Once again, choosing one item to encapsulate the year is very difficult...

Though options were plentiful, I think the Ghost is an excellent choice for 2014, reflecting the launch of Star Wars Rebels and 75053 The Ghost. This freighter has actually appeared in an Advent Calendar once before, back in 2017, but the new rendition is far more substantial and captures a little more detail, especially with the bands of colour on top.

Despite this, I prefer the past model. This one is larger and includes features like the separate cockpit and turret viewports, but the overall shape is lacking. The vessel looks too narrow and the engine configuration is all wrong, as the engines on each side should be positioned higher than those in the middle. This arrangement is very distinctive, so not recreating it is an issue.

Overall - I am impressed with the size of today's model, but the Ghost's shape could be better.

Here is today's ranking (in my opinion):
6. Spider-Man
5. City
4. Disney
3. Star Wars
2. Friends
1. Harry Potter

This model is a little larger, though. The Ghost is actually supposed to be somewhat bigger than the Falcon, so it's nice to see this model be closer in proportion to another build. Too bad there's no detachable Phantom...again.

On the other hand, this one includes the top turret. But yeah, when I built it, I thought, "This is sleeker and slimmer than I remember the Ghost being."

@ResIpsaLoquitur: You *could* view that 1x1 half-rounded tile as the Phantom, although it would work much better for the first one, and you'd need to turn it around.

6. Dis Not quite (0 points today + 35 points previously earned = 35 points total)
5. SW could use about four plate hights in with extra (1+35=36)
4. Fr It's a wooden Brio train in my head. Choo choo! (2+34=36)
3. SM just so closely missed 2nd place, as... (3+29=32)
2. City Vehicles in LACs that minifigs can ride are rather the exception, thus, this beats the retro-workplace from SM (4+40=44)
1. HP Very, very cool minifig, could be CMF (5+38=43)

It's the half-circle tile at the aft.

There is. What else do you think https://brickset.com/parts/design-35399 on the back is supposed to be?

I said detachable! It'd be hard to have a little thumb piece flying around! I like that 40451 has a tiny landspeeder and wish we had an option like that.

But it is detachable! Firmly holds onto the mothership by one stud! You can reattach it after playing.

It can zoom!

Could definitely have done with having a bit more girth. The Ghost’s burger-esque shape is quite distinctive

By in Netherlands,

Everything feels so substantial after yesterday's City 'build'.

Scratch that, since this year's City calender.

Pretty great model for the scale if you ask me.

Two ghosts in one day.

By in United Kingdom,

Ugh. 2014 - the year that the Expanded Universe was scrapped. Pretty much the beginning of the end for my interest in this franchise.

By in Ireland,

This is the Ghost? I wouldn't mind but watched all the seasons a few months ago. I must be getting old........(Sigh)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes! Was not expecting this! Still regret missing out on 75053.

So many fond memories of watching the early seasons of Rebels. I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but that first season was the best!

By in United Kingdom,

If not for the colours on the top, I likely would not have been able to identify which ship this represents. Pretty sure the sides of the ghost are around 45 degrees, so the angle of the slope brick doesn't work

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

I give it to the original designers — they managed to create a somewhat recognizable and memorable ship.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree that the engines and shape should be better. Yet, I like this one better. Definitely more substantial.

Then again, perhaps the designer should have reworked it with this high a piece budget.

By in United States,

Occuring to me that this one includes a Phantom (if that's what we're agreeing that is) since 75053 didn't come with one but last year's 75357 did. Very similar to a few days ago with the T-6 Jedi Shuttle and the Mandalorian Gauntlet Fighter right after. I don't really mind as this is shaping up to be a nice little display for the new stuff. I think I saw at least one other ship spoiled on the box.

@Aelbeyali:
I see three remaining spoilers on the box. Four, if you count the 17th, which will be posted in a few hours.

I'm trying not to look lol I had some accidental glances. That and sadly there are 5 spoilers on the fold down while other ACs have none. Four out of the final 7 days being on the box is a little much if you ask me.

I don't get my spoilers from the box, I get them from the images posted here, which show every build and minifig, with no background to (potentially) distract from seeing what the model is. But that's how I decide which calendar to get, and I don't carefully examine every entry, I just get a feel for the calendar as a whole and see if there are any particular models or figs I want.
