Review: 40756 Lucky Knots

Posted by ,

One of the numerous gifts with purchase that'll be offered at LEGO.com during January is 40756 Lucky Knots.

We don't have full details about its availability, although other sites are reporting a spending threshold of £135/c.$150, which will not be hard to achieve given the plethora of new sets that'll be released very soon.

Summary

40756 Lucky Knots, 317 pieces.

Attractive and elaborate knots that'll bring you good fortune in the year ahead.

  • Great parts pack
  • Repetitive build
  • Need to be hung up to display effectively.

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

It's one of five sets that have been produced to tie in with the Chinese Spring Festival which next year commences on the 28th January.

Chinese knots are traditionally made from a single length of cord, usually red, that is woven into different shapes. They act as good luck charms and ward off evil spirits.

There are dozens of different types and I believe this one most closely resembles the Pan Chang knot, one of the eight symbols of Buddhism that is also known as the Mystic Knot, which is believed to bestow good fortune on those who wear it.

Both knots are identical except for the stickers on the 4x4 tiles in the middle. One apparently says 'Spring' and the other 'Good fortune'.

Parts include 30 red 'toilet seats', which have only appeared in two sets until now, eight of the new short chain with 318 bars at each end, and eight tan broom heads.

They are quite fiddly and tedious to build, and obviously repetitive, but thanks to the instructions being split across two separate books you can share the process with someone else should you wish.

They probably won't mean much to most of us in the West, but the set makes a decent gift with purchase, especially if considered as a parts pack. However, I suspect there will be more appealing ones available at the start of the year, so choose when you buy the new sets wisely!

Thanks for the review Huw. I have to say that it's one GWP I won't be ordering for. If it so happens to be available when I order then great - if not, I'm not bothered. I'm sure it may be a nice GWP for some though.

Does it include a Brick Separator?

Good thing there are two. One would be nice to hang on display, the other to be used for parts!

Sorry for my possible ignorance in this matter, but what's "318 bars"?

I do wonder what people need 15 or 30 'toilet seats'
It looks nice but I hope it's not to fragile.
I don't understand why they use 8 rings at the back, totally invisible, but it's a nice extra.

They’re any bars with a 3.18mm diameter - the standard size for anything that clips into a minifig hand or other Lego clip. Here there are new short chain parts with short bar ends moulded on the ends

Looks very attractive. Not worth the £135 threshold on its own, so Knots Landing unless grouped with 1 or 2 of the other rumoured January GWPs.

Those were life presevers long before they were toilet seats.

I won't be tying myself in knots to get these, but they could be a suitable inducement if the threshold is right.

Very well designed, and I'd love to own them, I just have no use for them.

I used to see these Pan Chang knots in my grandparents' home when I was a wee lad. The cool thing about them is each one is tied from a single string. I think this symbolises longevity and growth. I don't know how to feel about a Lego version, it's kinda like a noodle bowl but each strand is 1 centimeter long.

I quite like these, I hope they're still available when I get around to buying the Chinese sets, as the modular takes priority, the rest of the sets out tomorrow will just have to wait.

Ah yes, “The Odd Piece Count Mystery of 2024”.

Odd piece should be the sticker sheet?

So are the two instruction books exactly the same with the exception of the different sticker?

Yes

I think these are missing a Gift With Purchase tag on the database page.
