54 projects qualify for 3rd 2024 LEGO Ideas review

Posted by ,

The third 2024 LEGO Ideas review period has now come to an end and 54 projects reached 10,000 votes this time, so will be considered for production.

The results will be announced later this year, probably over the summer, based on timings from previous years.

Well... Ideas can only be fixed by banning the use of social media to promote projects. Which will not happen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think The Moon: Lunar Landscape has a chance to get approved, and maybe Beetlejuice, but I'm not sure about the others.

I'd like to see the Magic Bookends get approved.

The Grinch will be rejected right away, that license is with another company.

Or at least only allow 1 project per user at once.

Also, there are some good models here but most the IP is the "Idea".

By in United States,

I NEED the Mystery Shack for my town!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would like it if LEGO commited to alternating liscensed and non liscensed sets, so we can see more creativity instead of people's favourite film/show/singer

Gravatar
By in United States,

Release the frogs

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm delighted to see the Mystery Shack here, and shocked to see it twice! I'm sure that doesn't affect its chances, but it would be cool if it did!

What would that solve? The point of IDEAS is for LEGO to create sets that expand their consumer base, as much as people seem to think every set should be of personal interest to them. While I may not be interested in many of the IPs or subject matters represented in the list, the fact that 10,000 people have voted for them shows that there is (potentially) interest in a set being made.

That being said, we can rule out any modular adjacent sets, and some seem more suited submissions to the Bricklink Program. So maybe the Moon landscape?

Ideas is popular enough though, I'd suggest the vote threshold should be 15,000 or 20,000 now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the design of the tent in the camping trip.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the magic bookends and the Jumanji board would be great picks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They really ought to raise the threshold of votes to atleast 20000. A higher threshold ensures only the more popular ideas have a chance at becoming a set. Some of these submissions are too niche to even become an ideas set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well as a lifelong Discworld fan, the Unseen University Library caught my eye. Really needs better brick built characters, or to be done in minifigure scale though. Would be so easy to do a full range of Discworld scenes given the huge wealth of material to draw from. Just not sure if Rhianna Pratchett would give consent to use the IP though given how many times company execs on various projects have screwed things up and her sharing her dads view of it wanting to be done right.

The point is that the original idea was not to compete on social media skills, but on creativity. Now it is about finding support on social media, which is often linked to finding IP with a large following. It's good for the Lego marketing team, but I don't want to do their job. Raising the threshold changes nothing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

GODZILLLA!!!!!

Portal 2, Grinch, ski lodge, and any of the other nice stations, inns, or workshops.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ah a Lego modular hospital. One day, one day...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Usually not a fan of adult animation sets, but Bob’s Burgers is probably my favorite show so I would love to see that!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Honestly, this is the least inspiring selection I've seen in years.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Given Lego's ongoing obsession with creatures and plants I could see the Lily Pad Frogs being their ideal submission.

The only set I'd consider is the Taylor Swift one. And, unlike the Mona Lisa, at least it looks like the original.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The fact that Taylor Swift-based sets keep popping up every time, and yet keep not getting made suggests to me that either Taylor Swift isn't willing to agree to it, or her licensing costs are so astronomical that Lego won't pay it.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I wish they'd bring back the short survey every time you vote on a set that asked how many you'd buy, how much you'd pay, etc. It might weed out those fans of whatever band, show, series, etc. who like the idea but would never buy it.

Maybe they could also split licensed and non-licensed with 20,000 votes necessary for licensed sets to reach the review stage, and 10,000 for non-licensed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lunar Landscapes is my favorite and seems like a reasonable set to produce as it fits with similar sets they have already sold (31203, 31212)

Of course I'd love the Portal set but I can't really see them doing this since they haven't already done a GLaDOS.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Most of these look great as MOCS...cannot say that they would look as good if they were made into official sets.

Ideas was great once upon a time, but with the BrickLink Designer Program allowing the community to vote on designs that don't end up being drastically changed, as well as making five sets available to purchase as opposed to one or two, the ideas competition is starting to look a bit dated.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Im never good at predicting which sets will be made. That said, the only viable set I see is the Bob Ross Studio.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That working Turing Machine looks amazing. Would probably be obscenely expensive if it were to be made, but it's still amazing.

Seeing 2 different Mystery Shacks is honestly hilarious.

> DRG Drilldozer
FOR ROCK & STONE!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The 2 machines are creative (Turing Machine & Card Shuffle) but I don't see Technic being made into an Ideas set.

Other than that, the Moonscape is the only one with any appeal to me.

Of the rest, a lot of meh IPs and repeated subject mater from previous rounds & BLDP.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Please, Cosmere! It has some stiff competition this round but I have faith

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I don't even bother with Ideas any more. For all I care they can cancel this theme altogether and ramp up BDP production instead. At least you know that what you vote is what you get.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Lake House by terauma is actually stunning, colors, part usage, and architecture are all unique. It's quite possibly one of the most enticing mocs I've every seen. Kudos to terauma for creating such a thing of beauty

Gravatar
By in Germany,

That Turing Machine is an awesome feat of LEGO engineering.
Will never make it to production, but I find it the most interesting of the lot. Maybe someone could integrate something like it into a GBC. It definitely gives off similar vibes to me.

Couldn't care less about all the IP based stuff, a lot of which I have never heard of in the first place.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's really too bad that we'll get only two, maybe three of these. There's a lot of good ones this time around.

Also, Rock and Stone!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Kind of tired of yet more modulars and IP raiding. That said, as they already have the Portal Licence, a brick-built Atlas and Peabody would be great.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Moon is the only set I will consider buying from all of these ideas.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Modular Hospital might arrive normally by LEGO, Simpson school is something we need on two 32x32 baseplates and Godzilla bring it on!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I find it quite sad that the only "ideas" people have are from other licenced themes. IF tehy choose any of these nieche things, the sets will end up like the Queer eye and teh BTS... 50% off with no one wanting to buy them.

These selection ,ooks quite poor to me. I am glad. Less spenditure on sets.

NOT TAYLOR SWIFT AGAIN!!!!!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Now, when it says it’s a working microscope, what do we mean exactly? Because I know Lego has done some lens work with the minifig magnifying glasses and all but I feel the sort of thing you’d need to make it work as a microscope might be out of their league

Gravatar
By in United States,

These all look so amazing! But personally I think Godzilla, Gravity Falls, and Jumanji are LOOOOOOOOOONNNGGG overdue for LEGO representation.

And also remember: some sets might be rejected because LEGO could already have plans to release a set based on that IP later down the line. For example, the Heeler's House was rejected, and just today we got an announcement for Bluey sets!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd love to get a Discworld, Cosmere, or Howl's Moving Castle set, but think the first two are too niche and that Howl would be a strange choice for a first Ghibli licensed set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh man, my brother got super drunk on margaritas at the Roundhouse once. We had to take him down the gondola instead of skiing back down. I’ll have to get him a copy if it gets selected

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love the different houses like the lake house, cliffside house, and Italian villa. I also really like the wild West train station and camping trip. I don't think those will be selected though. In terms of IPs, I love Bob Ross and Princess Bride. But given they have failed previously, I don't think they will make it either.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Turing machine is my favorite of the bunch, I love Akiyuki youtube videos and it would be nice to see that style of a lego model from the ideas line for once.

I like the microscope's trick to make it look like it really works.
Bolex might sell well to the dust collector crowd.
Howl's moving castle has too much visual mess but could look great if TLG does a do-over of the concept.

They did a fresnel lens for the lighthouse 21335, so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

And I will be the greatest villain of all time!

That's what I'm talking about!

By in Netherlands,

Favorites that might have a shot:
* The Moon: Lunar Landscape: Haven't we seen this before? Don't care, as this would still be a 100% buy for me.
* Bob Ross: Studio & Paintings: Not sure if I would buy it, but I can totally see this become a set. Very creative!

Favorites that don't stand a chance (maybe BDP?)
* Turing Machine – Working Lego Computer: Awesome, but this obviously is never ever gonna happen.
* Summit Station: Very cool, but would probably be redesigned quite a bit. Therefore better off at BDP.
* LEGO Godzilla: Impressive....probably a bit too much so even?

Other thoughts:
* Beetlejuice: Ghost House: Looks so plain and boring...
* Music and Jewelry: I think Lego already knows how to design modular buildings....
* From the Kitchen to Bricks: Linguini & Remy BrickHeadz: Like the idea, not the execution.
* Functional Microscope: Cool idea, seems well executed....but would I buy it? Would anyone buy it?
* Gremlins 40th Anniversary - Gizmo: With already a Gizmo on the way this never ever gonna happen.
* Cliffside House: Interesting idea, the house itself though....maybe better something like a temple or a castle? And who's gonna drill 5(!) holes in the wall to display this?
* Magic Bookends: Still like the idea, but we've seen better ones before.
* The Discworld Unseen University Library: I'd think Discworld would offer more interestion options?
* Motorized Howl's Moving Castle: Love the idea, but we've seen better versions. And Lego is never gonna get the Ghibli license....
* Modular Library and Park: Interesting building in real life, but looks very plain in Lego.
* Geometry Dash Cube: Feels way too similar to the Mario ?-cube.
* Bolex 16mm Camera: Same thing as with the Microscope.
* MR.BEAN'S Suitcase: Fun idea and I kinda like the execution, but in the end it's a lot of pieces for the suitcase and juist a few small vignettes.
* Capybara: I feel we've also seen this one before? Still needs quite a bit of work...
* The Polar Express: All Aboard for the North Pole!: While I can totally see Lego meking a Polar Express set, this needs a LOT of work.
* Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere: No clue what this is about but it looks great! But looks big and thus very expensive....and probably a bit too niche for that?
* Polish Falcon - Resque Service: How did this even get 10k supporters?
* Sony PlayStation 2: How well did the Atari do? I'll stick to my real PS2...
* Working Ornate Card Shuffler: I do really like the idea here, but would anyone actually buy and use it?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't expect to see either version of the Mystery Shack passing, since previous projects of the same show and same location have also been rejected at this stage, but I'd definitely be excited to be proven wrong: Gravity Falls is one of my favourite TV shows of the last decade and it would be neat to see it get the Lego treatment... definitely my first pick(s) out of everything here. But again, past experience tells me not to get my hopes up!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the idea of splitting apart the licensed and non-licensed projects, but anything that collects 10,000 votes in a matter of days is going to collect a higher number of votes without much difficulty, so changing that requirement seems pointless to me. Meanwhile, Ideas is doing well as a basis for the BLDP, but less well as a source of out-of-the-box, surprising new concepts. Instead, it seems to have fallen into the "bigger is better" mindset common to recent Lego sets of all descriptions. Perhaps the massive success of 60430 Interstellar Spaceship will remind people that you don't need 2000 pieces to create something special!

Of the proposed ideas, I like the Lunar Landscape best, with nods to the Bob Ross and (to my surprise) Taylor Swift sets as interesting, moderate-sized tributes. I share the doubts about getting a Taylor Swift license at a reasonable price, though. The other sets, while worthy, just feel too much like things TLG already does in their ordinary projects. Of course, the Lunar Landscape fits neatly into the Art sequence as well as the current Space theme, so it's really just my personal taste that pulls it out of the pack for me.

Maybe Ideas has served its purpose by stimulating new directions for Lego--or maybe it's just in a temporary dry zone, or I'm the one feeling jaded. Probably all of the above.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the Wild West Train Station and Summit Station, though Wild West might be competing with the latest Bricklink Designer Program train.

Polish Falcon caught my eye as being a neat set that might have more than a snowball's chance. I also really love the villa (and any set that creates height like that).

I wouldn't be surprised if no set made it though.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I like the buildings of Music and Jewelry, but after having a look on the set's page the interior seems a bit narrow.

Overpass park looks like a nice set, but it's quite big.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

zero interest in any of these

Yes, I get the impression she (or her management) control her image rights very closely. The lack of Taylor Swift Funko pop figures - which you'd imagine would be a huge seller - seems to back that up.

Not like she needs the money though.

Gravatar

The moon and the camera will get approved.

People should stop sending sets based on current running themes. There won't be an Ideas Brickheadz.

At least once, but I can't tell you the exact year or years.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Moon is the only one here I could see myself getting... I do love the Portal franchise, but I can't see myself buying the set. The computer is fascinating, but again, I can't really see myself getting it.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Turing machine. There has never been a Technic idea set. There was a good clock by Sariel in a previous round - also denied...sad

Since Icons is doing pretty much everything under the sun nowadays, ideas has lost its purpose, mostly.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Ratatouille looks nothing like them.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Some very interesting ideas. I was most impressed with the Jumanji one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There are several that I would spend money on, and several more that are very clever and cool, credit to the creators but don’t interest me enough to spend money. We’ll see where it goes, my biggest hope is the medieval tavern and inn

Gravatar
By in United States,

Princess Bride would be a day one buy - brilliantly executed.

@samsz3 said:

For a few years, they’ve had a standing policy that at least 50% of approved sets have to be non-IP, but people don’t really notice this is going on.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There are some interesting ideas in here, even a few sets I might buy if they happened, but very little that feels remotely viable. I see a whole bunch of stuff that Lego isn't going to want to make, in most cases for reasons that really should be obvious.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There seems to be a trend to combine IPs with large displayable objects, which is a combination of the two most common types of past winners. Will this strategy work, though?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm cheering for the Bob Ross one.

Also the Italian Villa is gorgeous, but please Lego don't make it a $300 set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There too many here, the threshold should be raised. There's a lot that won't make it, based on rumours about what's coming.

I like the Lake House and the Italian villa. The western station is a good sequel to some sets from bricklink. The Sherlock Holmes set has some accuracy issues, but I doubt it will be picked anyway.

I like cluedo, that would make a good addition to the game theme.

I expect to be disappointed with the results.

Gravatar
By in Albania,

Uncharacteristically to my current Lego interests I like the most Turing Machine. What a neat idea for Lego Technic. And very educational

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd buy Gizmo from Gremlins in a heartbeat!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The Turing machine should be in everyone's list because without that "primitive" computing machine we might not have computers as we know them today, let alone the internet

The microscope is also a good candidate

And the bolex camera

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

I see a lot of projects, I see a lot of shelf warmers and I see very few commercial hits.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'd like to see both the threshold for consideration raised, and a full split into two streams, one for Licensed sets and one for original/Lego IP.

"banning promotion on social media" is thoroughly unworkable though

Gravatar
By in United States,

Deep Rock Galactic is the perfect match for Lego. It scratches the Power Miners/Rock Raiders itch, it's an appropriate video game IP for kids and adults, and the developer, Ghost Ship Games, is Danish!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A couple of stand outs for me are the 'Bolex 16mm Camera' and the 'Functional Microscope'.
But I also rather like the tranquility of the 'Camping Trip'.

'Deep Rock Galactic Drilldozer' looks like a cross between 'Crablogger' and 'The Mole'... bring on another Thunderbirds Ideas entry!

Gravatar

@ET said:

Its not a good set, far too complex and covers way way too many books.
Honestly if someone wants to get a cosmere set it needs to be smaller and focused on Mistborn or Stomlight to have a chance. Even then, until there is a movie, I can’t see the audience being big enough to make it worth Lego’s while.
I would be happy to be wrong however

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the moon and Bob Ross if both stay at reasonable price points. The rest are too big, too niche or too boring. Maybe the microscope but why have one unless you can actually scope... I doubt the set will have a specialized lens :(

Gravatar

Ideas is starting to become the tv show with the season too many.

Gravatar

i am not a fan of it, but to be honest the only original idea here is the "Working Ornate Card Shuffler" (and maybe the Summit Station). The rest is basically the same as every time, but the quality is much lower imho.

I've seen a working compound microscope MOC using minifigure magnifying glasses. It was on display at BrickCon some years ago. I got to play with it, and I was very, very impressed.

This may have been it?

While the model that made it through this Ideas review is nice-looking, I don't think it really compares to using real Lego optics. The MOC with the magnifying glasses was amazing.

I completely agree. Looking back on older reviews such as https://brickset.com/article/3389/my-little-pony-s-been-put-out-of-its-misery, which had FOUR, yes, FOUR ideas. I think even 25,000 wouldn't be pushing it too much.

Gravatar

BOB'S BURGERS!

Make it happen, TLG.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Very good for my wallet. Not 1 I'm interested in. Lego will have enough (to much) sets of its own to take my money.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm rooting for the Bob Ross set and definitely a big Godzilla build.
Godzilla, if Lego gets the license and builds one big like Voltron, it will SELL OUT. No doubt!

It's not just unworkable. The entire premise of the program is that _you_ are expected to put in all the leg work to get your project to 10k votes. Social media is effectively a required part of the experience, if you want to clear the bar and go to review.

Once again proof that Ideas needs to significantly change to stay relevant. Half the commenters on this post are acting like most of these have a chance. And that's AFOLs who should have a better sense of what Lego actually approves for the program.

Based on previous approvals, sets that may have a small chance:
• Beetlejuice
• Lake House
• Lunar Landscape
• Princess Bride (but not as a copy of the storybook set, some other diorama)
• One of Woodland Wildlife, Beta fish, or frogs
• Taylor Swift (this model is vastly superior to all the house submissions. If Lego is ever going to do a TS set this is the best chance)

The rest of the sets are vastly outside of what Lego will ever put out. The Itallian Villa is nice but it's too similar to the riveria set that's already coming. The Gravity Falls submissions are good models but show less than a decade old feels too early for Lego to capitalize on nostalgia. The kids and teens that liked that show need to be older than they are now to really have the income to buy it

By in United States,

I'd take a Grinch set, but agree with @SithLord196 that the chances of that getting approved are three sizes too small. Otherwise, Beetlejuice and Princess Bride are high on my list, and I'd probably pick up Ratatouille just because it's Pixar IP. If the Muppets actually gets approved, I'll probably try for a signed copy, since I think that's the first project to go to review from a member of MichLUG. The moon looks fantastic, but I skipped every similar type of set and just don't see myself getting that one (it'd be incredibly expensive as just a way to display Classic Spacemen). The non-IP project that I'd most like to see get approved is the frogs. If that one doesn't, I'll have to see if I can figure out the design and just build a copy of those frogs on my own.

I would build that Betta set!

I'm fast losing interest in Ideas, although it used to be my favourite theme. It's just become a niche IP/ MOC popularity contest - something like the Cosmere submission is very cool to see as a MOC but wouldn't make a good set. The Turing machine is very impressive but would never pass stability / complexity standards.
The one I really don't understand is the Overpass Park. Actually I personally quite like it, but how on earth did it get 10,000 votes?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's hard to root for anything when there are so many qualifiers and Lego will only greenlight 3 at most. Most of the submissions bore me anyway, I guess after Bionicle was rejected twice and Portal has been rejected at least five times I just lost hope that anything I have any personal connection to would ever be approved and by sheer numbers the odds of any individual set getting chosen is minuscule.

Gravatar

Far too many licensed sets and large sets. The microscope is amazing and the frogs are adorable. Magic Bookends is beautiful.

The rest I don't care about at all.

I really like how eclectic these submissions are.

There are probably only a couple that appeal to me personally, but regardless, there are some great builds among the selected, and since I don't need or even want every set, it's great to see such broad scope of creativity and building styles.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Some of these are brilliant, but 95+% will never make it, some may get a chance on Bricklink. I think Lego or other should map out the sets on Pick a brick, then people can source the parts if they want, for every complete set you pay say £3 (may depend on size) which could go to the designer for "the instructions" Then Lego do very little work, Designer gets something and anyone can get one at any time. (Parts depending)

By in Turkey,

I liked the Lakehouse. I think Lily Pad Frogs may make it due to botanical builds in it and it has a nice size. Some ideas look convoluted due to their large size. They don't look something that Lego will produce, or at least not without heavily modifiying them.

Gravatar

Glad there are more non-IP designs this time (as anyone can do IP including TLG themselves), but such a wide choice appealing to lots of different interest groups that it difficult to choose which should make it into production, good luck anyway.

I really hope Music and Jewelry makes it, as unlikely as it seems. I like the idea of the Taylor Swift one as well, but that would probably depend on how well the BTS set did.

As for the realistic choices, the microscope, Mystery Shack and the frogs seem likely.

I believe they were banned for the bricklink designer program... not Lego ideas. Presumably since with Lego Ideas if they do pick a modular compatible design (like the Botanical Gardens was) they can just change it so that it's not a modular compatible design.

I never get the frustration with LEGO Ideas. As @Montyh7 noted, it’s an eclectic, wonderful mix. It’s disappointing that they will likely only approve 1 or 2, especially with such a long road to release. But I’m happy for LEGO to have more options to choose from. You never know what will drive the next new direction with LEGO, so I love that we have this voice.

You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

@Joce1275:
Other way around. Ideas has very strict guidelines, which includes no piggybacking off of current product lines. You can tap IP or themes that they’ve let lie fallow for a few years, but not one that’s sitting on the shelf when your project hits the review phase. Modulars didn’t originate with Cuusoo/Ideas, so it’s not permanently banned from getting approved, but they would have to actually stop producing them for a couple years before the format falls off the restricted list. I don’t see that happening anytime in the near future.

Stuff that got rejected from Ideas has popped up again in the BDP, so rules are clearly more relaxed. And that makes a certain amount of sense, since the sets are less official, and not something that they’d expect anyone to be able to walk into a major retail store and buy.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Sadly, I've learned to not bother getting excited until the actual sets are announced. I feel like all the cool sets get waved off OR end up being way too overpriced for me to actually buy at this time

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Some of these are quite amazingly poor. I would dearly love to see something along the lines of the Old West railway station, but it's not going to happen here. The moon one is nice, sure, but who would actually buy it? And who would buy a "working ornate card shuffler"??? If any of these make it I fear it will be one of the IPs. The only times I've ever heard of Gravity Falls has been on these!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

All projects that are of a building and have a close-up of the minifigures in front should be instantly rejected.

I get the feeling that too many people are doing it not because they want the set, they are picking random licences and desperate to get the commission from having a set in production.

Interesting... I know Modular style buildings were accepted in BDP for ages in the past, but I thought they changed the rules for BDP Series 6 submissions to not allow buildings in the Modular format any longer, ie 32x32 baseplate, lamp post, technic connections etc... but they could certainly have changed it back again, I believe they are accepting submissions for Series 7 now so it's difficult to keep track!!

Gravatar

Really hoping for Camping Adventures. It looks so nice.
The Moon is really neat too. Wouldn't mind seeing that pass.

And as much as I'd love the Mystery Shack, I doubt it'll happen considering it hasn't passed the other times there have been submissions.

I don’t pay as much attention to BDP, so I hadn’t heard that they’d changed any rules recently. Being restricted from using baseplates doesn’t completely rule out following the Modular format, though. You could use 8x8, 8x16, and 16x16 plates to make a fairly robust floor that AFOLs would know they could easily convert into the Modular format by swapping a few plates for baseplates.

Oh, one thing that is more restrictive for BDP vs Ideas is IP. BDP is banned from using any licensed IP of any sort, because it’s too expensive to secure licensing for just a handful of copies.

By in United States,

Can’t wait to be disappointed in the results again later this year :)

I do think 52 sets per round is crazy. Maybe they could announce immediately which ones are definitely not getting made? Like they’ve already said no more Modular’s so when they put out this press release it could be “ideas going through the process” and “congrats on getting 10k but we aren’t considering it”. Might also help deter repeat submissions if they are always in the second group.

I’d support the move to 20k but I think it might backfire. I can see a world where only IP that is heavily promoted on social media hot that threshold.

Anyway, he’s my personal wishlist in order of which will hurt me the most when it isn’t picked:
1. The Princess Bride (mini figs aren’t great but the build is very cool)
2. Either Mystery Shack (I prefer mad.bricks scale but I would take any mystery shack they would give me)
3. Taylor Swift Eras tour poster (I think this idea is actually really cool, maybe just include her main eras tour outfit instead of each album though)
4. Taskmaster (brilliant show, but there’s absolutely no chance. Would love if James Acaster was included lol)
5. Overpass Park (I love the slice on this)
6. Clue board (if you lowered the walls and made the tiles 3x3 I think this could really work)
7. Sherlock Holmes (don’t think this one is done well but I’ve always loved Mr. Holmes)
8. Functional microscope (what cool build)
9. Godzilla (I just want to see LEGO’s take on it as much as anything)
10. Italian Villa (needs a lot of work but I love the idea, people would just end up accusing LEGO of changing it too much)

By in Russian Federation,

Shuffle machine is interesting to think about.
Hadn't checked the comments of the project page, but either the captured video is very lucky - it looks like both sides spit out the new card at the exactly same time and it's a pure luck that they are not stuck in the middle. Or it is a more clever design with one shaft rotating first and second one starting to rotate after first does one turn.
I think I know how to build it using a trigger on the back which you have to pull up before a new shuffle. If it has no mentioned problem and no trigger, I`d really like to see the original creator mechanical design.

You say that, but the Book of Bill launched last summer and apparently it sold way better than initially expected. I don't know how well a $30 book bodes for a $100+ toy, but 2nd place in Barns and Noble's bestsellers alongside two models getting enough votes could be a ping in the radar for the suits.

Also you say less then a decade old but last I checked 2015 would be a decade ago and 2012 was before 2015. I'd consider 13 years to be over a decade, but what do I know.

Worse would be if you each got half of the same card.

@GSR_MataNui:
My impression is that they've been getting leery of making sets based on TV shows. Given that the SW theme underperformed in the gap years between the prequel movies, they know that having a current film or show helps drive sales. Older shows, it's a risk. They did well with a few shows through the Ideas program, but I suspect they got burned on a few others (Adventure Time comes to mind, though the set probably wasn't what fans had in mind). Gravity Falls may have a loyal fan base, but the question is if it also has a large fan base.

I see a lot of killjoys here. Who cares if a lot of sets make the review process. Not like it's your job to review them. I bet Ideas isn't even about making money off the sets for Lego. It's about promoting brand awareness.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It seems clear to me that 10,000 votes is no longer a sufficient threshold. 50+ projects is simply too many and they’d be better off raising the bar to see what more people actually want. If that’s 20,000, so be it. At the end of the day it’s a market research tool to let TLG make sets they know people will be interested in, and at the moment the sheer popularity of it has broken the system with the current threshold. It’s become a little bit silly frankly.

I'd think it would be partly about crowdsourcing marketing research as well. As for this crazy notion of upping the target to make review, all that this would accomplish is to weed out most of the non-licensed stuff.

I took a look at the clue idea and saw another version by someone else which looked a lot better, as the rooms were not self contained and secret passages.

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/77457464-8aa1-42f4-a5c5-3ebc866940d1

My favourite version of clue was where you got separate rooms that you shuffled and turned over randomly, connecting the house in odd layouts. You had to make it back to the entrance hall and stand your player next to the telephone to make your guess, which could take a while, depending on the layout.

At this point, I can't get excited. Regarding Ideas, Lego seems to be taking the plainest, most boring projects that reach 10K, and making those. Thinking they'll shell out for licensing is comical. With their recent track record, they'll take these 54, only make one, and it'll be whichever one is the least interesting.

The fish is also the sort of thing that I think will grab the review team. And I would put the Lumbermill as having something interesting enough going on that it has an outside chance.

Pretty much everything else is stuff that has already been turned down repeatedly (Gravity Falls House, over and over and over) Things that feel like Lazy IP grabs of stuff they are already doing (PS2, Jumanji) or just really nice MOC's that are unlikely to convert to sets.
