Where are the other six?
makes you wonder what happened to the first 6
but looking at the way bro is driving, I think I might know....
I've never seen this before, surprisingly, because it's an awesome set.
DaFriq is TS????/??/???/??
I received this set second hand, I don't even remember if it was assembled, but it had the instructions, so I checked to see how this thing remained balanced and there's a tiny wheel hidden up in the nose, which is pretty great. Also the steering wheel inside is on a hinge so it can be closer to the minifigs hands in this machine, which is nice to see when so often I see control panels out of reach or down buy the minifig's feet. (It's rare to see steering wheels in Star Wars.)

It's the type of thing you see people drive in order to beat land speed records. Or compete in races on salt flats, like seeing who can go a mile in the shortest amount of time, but unlike drag racing, they don't race each other simultaneously. At the speeds they're going, it's too dangerous should anything go wrong, so only one driver at a time is at risk.
And if I'm wrong on any of this, I'm saying it with confidence, so just believe me.
It doesn't take much to turn this into a spaceship!
Really cool set. Extreme Team is definitely another of my favorite subthemes.

They were prototypes that never made it out of the workshop (Except 6). Most of them weren't even full cars. One was just an engine, and another was a frame with wheels but no engine. Only 5 & 6 were actually functioning, and even then only barely.

If they drive anything like the driver of the car in yesterday’s RSotD, it’s a miracle they’re only on number 7
What happened to the other six: Well Professor Hikiti needed additional testing for his "Oscillation Overthruster", ya' know, so Buckaroo would be "safe"...(look at current guy)...*radio* Yeah...were gonna' need a spatula...:)
I had this one as a kid!

The lore possibilities are endless...

If you believe the stories, embedded in the side of a cliff, a few dozen feet up.
@MCLegoboy:
No, that's pretty much my understanding. Except I only know of one salt flat where this is done, which is in Utah (Bonneville Salt Flats). And some events run on a straight track with one or more timed miles for speed records, but other events do run on an oval track for distance races. The latter may compete multiple cars at the same time. Way, way, way back when, the salt flats were proposed as the ultimate place to race cars. In the age of dirt track racing, salt flats were the only dust-free option.
For anyone who hasn't heard of salt flat racing, the reason they do it there is because the area floods with about an inch of water every winter. As the water evaporates, it deposits any salt that it carried in, resulting in a very thick crust of densely packed salt, which gets smoothed out once a year like running a Zamboni on an ice rink.

…maybe don’t look at the piles of burning wreckage left just out of shot

Yeah, just pick it up and swoosh it around.
As weird as it looks....I like it!
It confused me so much as a kid.
There’s a few in this line that have Blacktron styling.
I have never seen the part 30119 Wing Plate Bi-level 8 x 4 and 2 x 3 1/3 Down before, also used in a plane and helicopter in set 6582-1 before disappearing. Seemed very popular in grey as landing legs for 1997 UFO sets. There is also a grey Up in the UFO sets, plus a mystery UFO blue UP part '30118pr0002' at https://rebrickable.com/parts/30118pr0002/wing-plate-bi-level-8-x-4-and-2-x-3-13-up-with-silverorangeblack-ufo-logo-print/ which appears in 0 sets! You just have to believe its out there somewhere.
I definitely remember this puppy! It was called Fireball in the Adventures comics.
@huw why are RSODs appearing as updates in the left bar?
Man, gotta love that 90s Lego 'SYSTEM' branding, takes me back.... Dunno of it's the rose-tinted nostalgia specs but i always remember those small System sets being jam packed with possible combinations you could do outside of the basic model, it was always very often more than just 3-in-1!

Didn't Mythbusters disprove those stories?

Probably because the database entry for those sets gets updated with "Random set of the day on [date]" on its own sidebar.
Ah, what a delight to see this set featured today! It was one of my favorite childhood sets. One of the ones I built, disassembled, rebuilt, and remixed probably dozens of times.
This was the epitome of sleekness at the time, before the explosion of curved slopes and wedges. The old wedges / wedge plates without stud notches make it that much better looking, too. Peak '90s LEGO.
Pull the stickers and wheels, make that cockpit dark blue, and you've got a Spyrius attack jet!

Predecessor to 60178, which provides similar tempting potential for a spaceship conversion.

If you check the set entry page there is a "Change Log" (CH LOG) tab. For todays it indicates the last change to the set entry was:
31 Mar 25 Grahame EAN changed from {empty} to 5702010965809
So the data for the set entry was updated today. It's quite common for old sets to be in the "Site Updates" bar. 4th item in the bar is 3132 (Pieces changed from 10 to 12) followed by 8520 (YearFrom changed from 1999 to 2000)
I had this! I loved all the Xtreme Team sets.
Those parts look familiar to me...
I have this set, love it.
@MCLegoboy has already mentioned my favourite feature, the folding steering wheel that lays flat on the driver's lap. Blew my mind as a kid.
I loved this set!

...and then the Brickster (who actually used Jailbreak Joe's appearance until the very last issue he appeared in) stole it. Because of course he did. In hindsight it feels a bit of a downgrade for him, from Big Bad Villain of Lego Island to 'common criminal who steals anything that isn't nailed down and absolutely ALWAYS gets caught, and usually in goofy ways' (e.g. in that comic, the Extreme Team stopped him by triggering the jet's ejector seat remotely so that it flung him into a river), but I guess times were rough for him between the two Lego Island games...
I was honestly surprised how small this set looked when I first saw this image of it; from Adventures, I'd got the impression that 'Fireball' was bigger than this. Although that may just have been child!me being a terrible judge of size!
Nice to see that someone else remembers the Adventures comics too! :D
Oooh. I loved this set as a kid. And kid me was onto something, as I still love it!
Yesterday's set called for the trapezoids army!

Or, how about the time the Brickster used the Extreme Team's hang glider for a heist, and they used one of the alternate builds from this set to chase after him?
Good times!
Perhaps this is the most memorable Extreme Team besides the Extrene Team mountain set, at least to me. It's quite well finished, even including hubcaps for the wheels. It sure looks like a landspeed record vehicle. Cool, and so very 90s in a good way!

Oh, I have no idea. I can only take so much of Adam (like about five seconds), so I've only watched a couple episodes. But, I'm gonna point out, I did say, "If you believe the stories."
@MCLegoboy:
Also, I have an idea this design would end catastrophically in a land speed record attempt. Those thin supports, and such a wide wheel base just seem like they'd result in one or both wheels getting torn loose.
