Mario Kart - Spiny Shell confirmed as Insiders reward

Posted by ,

40787 Mario Kart - Spiny Shell was revealed over the weekend and has now been confirmed as a LEGO Insiders reward, rather than a gift-with-purchase.

The set will be released on the 15th of May and cost 2500 points, which is equivalent to roughly £15.50, $19.50 or €16.50.

Great! I don't have to buy anything to get it!

You do have to buy to be able to include in your order.....

Very wise. I suspect that a lot of people who think 72037 looks fantastic won't have the faintest idea what 40787 is!

Yeah but it's not tied to a minimum purchase of theme I think they mean.
Can simply get a keychain or something small they've been meaning to buy anyways

Dropping you down to 7th!

... other than the €330 worth of Lego to get the points. Plus another Lego order at RRP to redeem the reward.

I heard it whizzing past me when I was in 5th!

If you get this, it means you're trailing behind.

Back in the N64 days this was one component in coming back from last to first in just the final lap.

It's a really complex curvy object, so it's impressive how good it looks!

Insider rewards is actually a lot more expensive than GWP if you factor that you would have to spend $500 for 2500 points whereas GWP threshold would have likely been under $200. I would have preferred GWP especially with a set that pairs so perfectly with it.

But that $500 spend for 2500 points would also have had other GWP if you planned it properly.

I thought Lego didn’t do war sets

Had this been straight up GWP I’d have probably bought the Mario Kart set at release - as it is I don’t have the points for it and will now be better off waiting for the set to be discounted elsewhere.

Seriously. This is only a step or two below a Fat Man/Little Boy Lego set. This thing is a war machine.

I wonder how long it will be until someone mods a pair of wings onto this, to match its Mario Kart Wii appearance.

Looks really good.
Funny thing is, I have played Mario Kart Wii lots of times and won plenty of races, yet I have never seen this before.

Apparently Space Baby GWP releases same day, but the threshold has not been revealed yet.

Exactly!

um... yes you do! Much more! That's why GWP would be better.

Okay, I was going to let this go buy when I thought it was a GWP, as I pretty much don't make large purchases anymore and I wasn't interested enough to track it down on the secondary market, but now I'm sorely tempted.

Technically you do, as you exchange your points for this, then technically have to buy something to then add your reward to the order. But I suppose you can order anything rather than fixed to say Super Mario to get this.

If you left the tan parts out, you could build a Classic Space ship out of it.

Meh. I've seen the leaks, and those pictures were all overexposed.

Awesome. Saves me from having to get it off of eBay as I didn't want the Mario Kart set.

If you are in the lead and you hear that familiar homing tone, brake and brake hard. You may at least take some others with you

Absolutely ??- I'm surprised that so many don't seem to grasp this. As someone planning to pick up a copy of the Mario Kart on Day One- Thursday- along with the Upsized Driver Mini Figure, I would have much preferred it as a GWP.

Depends on your purchasing habits. As someone who has only bought a few blind bags for specific parts, and has zero plans to buy the Kart set, but might want to turn this into a spaceship…it’s acceptable.

By in United States,

I came in here to say I was happy about it being an Insider Gift rather than a GWP, though I'm intrigued to see the opposite opinion. Everyone is correct though in terms of pricing, but for me I'm still riding the 4x points high of the Venator from May 4th which makes this an easy selection for me.

I do eventually want to get that Mario and Kart set... but perhaps I'll wait for a better price. I'm still hoping some day they do a decent sale on the PAC-MAN arcade set. I really like it, but $270 is an insane price.
