BDP8: Soul Keepers’ Sanctum
Posted by Huw,In this, the last in a series of articles written by designers of BrickLink Designer Program 8 submissions, Australian AFOL Matthew Cruz (MadDadBricks) describes his Soul Keepers’ Sanctum:
BrickLink Designer Program Series 8 is full of tributes to classic LEGO themes – but Soul Keepers’ Sanctum dares to forge a new legend.
Soul Keepers’ Sanctum, a gothic-fantasy fortress, tells the tale of a hidden island, a sacred flame, and an order of skeletal warrior-monks risen from the grave to defend it. At 3,215 pieces and over 50 cm tall, Soul Keepers’ Sanctum is a towering, playable love letter to LEGO Castle – to the legends that continued in our imaginations, long after the battle had been packed away.
Could this be the return of the storytelling magic that made the classics unforgettable?
The Lore
At the heart of the LEGO realm lies a secret older than memory itself: the Soul Flame – a remnant of pure creative power that formed the world. Long since forgotten and buried beneath an island far from those who would seek to misuse its power, the resting place of the Soul Flame became home to the first Soul Keepers - an order of mystical warrior-monks who gave their lives not for glory, but for an eternal life of guardianship, reverence and perpetual vigil. They are an elite force, sworn to protect the flame that sustains creation itself!
The first Soul Keepers crowned this sacred place with bone-white spires, spiralling upwards to proclaim the power of the Soul Flame beneath and beyond; but now… the hidden Sanctum has been discovered!

The Design: Starting with what’s highest
The pinnacle of a city reveals the culture’s highest value. Whether banking, religion, monarchy, or learning. I started with the spire crowned by the Soul Flame. The Sanctum was then built spiralling out, and around, not just physically, but thematically.
Everything else had to spiral out from and serve that sacred centre.

I imagined earlier versions with a full skeleton city: a smithy, school, tavern, and more. But limited part count led to a necessary distillation: a single, sacred structure built into the rock that had formed around the revered Flame. What remained became more focused – and more powerful!
The result is a vertical, spiralling stronghold. The structure opens like a triptych, expanding from a compact 27 cm wide tower base to a 58 cm-wide diorama. Key features like the dragon landing pad and mooring docks swing open, revealing ritual chambers where new Soul Keepers are called forth, a chamber for the religious and civic leaders, and the cavernous chamber from which the Soul Flame emerges.
Every element was designed to balance display appeal with versatile play – for example the stairs line up and are functional in both the closed and open positions.

Why Wolfpack?
To face off against the Soul Keepers, I brought back the Wolfpack - not as nostalgic nods, but as cunning, desperate marauders.
In LEGO Castle lore, the Wolfpack have always been outcasts – scavengers lurking at the edges. Here, they’ve tracked the rumour of the Soul Flame to its hidden source. They don’t know what they’ll find – but they’re willing to risk everything to seize its power and gain an advantage over their traditional rivals.
Soul Keepers’ Sanctum is a clash of reverent order versus ruthless ambition.

What’s in the Set?
- 13 Soul Keepers – monks, warriors, and acolytes sworn to the Flame
- 9 Wolfpack Marauders – each uniquely armed and ready to raid
- 3 raiding skiffs – with sails inspired by the 1992 Wolfpack crest
- 1 Bone Dragon – fully brick-built, poseable, and ridable
- 1 Bone Golem – an ancient sentinel animated by the Flame
- Over 3,200 parts, with a finished height of 50 cm and width of 58 cm when fully opened

Why Soul Keepers? Why Now?
This set is a love letter to LEGO Castle, not just in form but in spirit - where structure and story work as one. It’s designed for world-builders, storytellers, and anyone who longs for original themes with real depth.
Unlike previous skeleton factions, the Soul Keepers aren’t villains. They’re protectors. That shift opens the door to meaningful play and rich imagination - and builds a world that feels truly mythic.

From death, we rose. For life, we stand.
The Soul Flame awaits!

Thanks and good luck in Series 8!
Unrealistically many figures, but what a nice variety! Would love to see this getting made
Not sure the ships are needed, the building is better without them.
Glad this is the last article, I try to stay away from the voting because I was disappointed the last time I participated, so to see sets on here was annoying, as I don't wish to get attached. I can't help but wonder if any of these will get through now and I have to try and prepare myself not to be disappointed or glad either way.
I love this series of fan designer highlights.
Insanely metal \m/

I suppose they technically do not count skeletons as minifigures, so this could slip through the limit of 1 minifigure per X pieces.
The Soul Keepers look way too modern in contrast to original Wolfpack, but I overall I am getting big Necron vibe from them. Also like the theme which is similar to Knights Kingdom 2 assault on Vladek's fortress.
I like this. Like it a lot!
I want to play more with my displays, and this fits the bill just fine.
I think the building and characters are so unique and remarkable by themselves they don't really need a nostalgia bait to pursue people into getting this. In fact, I think such a cool concept deserves an entirely new cast of rogues rather than revamping something from the old Castle theme. But I don't want to be overly critical of an otherwise really inventive build. Well done!

Well they cant make new prints for BDP sets so I guess the Wolfpack torsos worked best, leading to the Wolfpack inclusion.

I'm aware of that, but they still could've used different existing, non-specific torso's in combination with armour pieces or other add-ons to create something new. There are plenty of warrior and space-like torso's in the current inventory to come up with an entirely new faction. Not trying to be cynical, but now it feels a bit like they had a really cool design and wanted it to tie in with existing LEGO lore in hopes of getting it produced -- which I'm sure will help to some extend. But let me be positive, and just assume they love the Wolfpack so much they just want to pay tribute to these loveable robbers.
Chaotic, way too many figures, unclear what it is about.... Also don't like all the rendering with green lights that are not really lights. I wonder if this set has really been built by the designer.
But I do appreciate the creativity and work that went into this.
