Nice modern take on a classic set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great pick!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just tell me when the GWP for this goes live, as I will need three of them.

Or skip the GWP thing and just let us *buy* it directly as a proper set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks good but I don't like the shaping of the hull nearly as much as the original set. I'd also complain about the brickbuilt sail compared with the cloth, but I wouldn't expect them to do a cloth sail with the GWP.

Is the flag printed?

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's the one I voted for! I hope they make enough copies for everyone to get the GWP who can fill a cart for it. With so many other sets on my wanted list, it shouldn't be hard to fill a cart to get this one! - - - But wouldn't it be nice if we could get nice little classic remake sets at regular retail too, hmm?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Why do these small sets always need to be GWPs? I only want the small sets and have no interest in getting the behemoth sets they're attached to.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh boy can't wait for this to sell out in thirty seconds so scalpers can sell the figs to armybuilders for $20 apiece

Gravatar
By in Poland,

The sail NEEDS to be a cloth piece. Otherwise, this will be a wasted attempt on my most wanted remake.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm curious how many printed elements they'll be willing to include in a GWP. Looking forward to it!

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

Cannot wait

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is no Autumn Snails, but I like it. ;o)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Let's hope lego doesn't feel the need to change much
remember 40786

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like this, but I'm not too sure about the sail, I still prefer the material ones.

So when will the TV nostalgia results be announced?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really hope they keep the classic style box art, as they did with 40567.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Oh - that is beautiful! For once, I usually don't buy whatsoever in order to get GWP, but I will have to make an exception for this!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am glad they went with Black Knights since that was a favorite when I was a child. I don't love the shaping of the modern take, so hopefully LEGO can make some changes to that. I will likely get it either way, so it doesn't matter I guess, but I don't love it as is. But I'll keep it sealed anyway so it doesn't matter. Hopefully the threshold isn't super high. And I hope they keep a nostalgic box art style.

That is a lot of hope in my post. I guess time will tell.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yay! I got 6057 for my birthday in 1992. I'm looking forward to getting it again!

The two 90s contest winners should be revealed on June 2

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great remake, I just wish that the original really served any purpose. There were a weirdly large number of boats in the castle days of the 90s and they rarely had anyone to fight, since I think they were always Black Knights, with the exception of Viking Voyager?

I had the OG, and it was basically a great battle pack.

Gravatar
By in United States,

On the one hand I'm very glad this is being made. On the other hand, I'm a bit bummed both Black Knights and Dragon Knights/Masters are being regulated to GWPs, making it impossible to army build them. We still haven't gotten a revamped Royal Knights so here's hoping they get a proper on-bricks-and-pieces reboot with a couple of these guys thrown in!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The one I voted for! Very pleased that we get Black knights’ shields back to the production :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO do a tribute to any original theme released after the early 90s challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The ships scale seems off beside the figures

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Less minifigs and large piece for the hull, it seems. Not good.
Anyway a desirable set, unfornutately it seems they want to provide it as a GWP.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

LOVELY!
Too bad it is not a 'regular' Ideas set you can buy, instead of it being a gift with purchase.
Anyway, lovely little "classic" castle Lego set.

What about 40581 BIONICLE Tahu and Takua from 2023?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This looks rather good. Quite complex for a GWP so will presumably need to shrink a bit, or be a pretty high threshold.

Personally, with a few £250+ 'Lego Exclusive' sets on my wishlist I need a few higher threshold GWPs to tempt me!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yay! I'll be able to have this and original right next to Majisto's Workshop (and original).

The original of this model was my absolute favorite Lego set when I was a child.

(I wish these would not be GWPs but just directly purchaseable... even if they were "made on demand" for only a couple months.)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Nice, it will be made available!

As a GWP

... I'll stick with what I have. I didn't want one that badly anyway :/

Gravatar
By in United States,

Unsure how to feel about this… Just hope that they are able to include all the prints/pieces/figs that made the original so iconic.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Of course castle wins.
At least maybe we will get printed shields.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe one day us Rock Raiders/Power Miners fans will get our due...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Nice, was my favourite as well. Hopefully the decorations will all be prints. Zero hope for a cloth sail though.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

The original is such an icon, I'm very happy that it was chosen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yay! Very exciting and I’ll definitely get one. More shields and hopefully three Minifigures!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The original was the pinnacle of LEGO Castle ships. This is a poor replica. The hull is not as nicely shaped and what's with a brick-built sail. it needs to be cloth. They did a much better job with more limited elements in 1992.

40581 is a drop in a sea of endless space and castle nostalgia sets. I get it, Bionicle doesn't sell as well, but it doesn't make it sting any less. There are plenty of AFOLS (myself included) who have never touched those themes because they didn't exist anymore, and it's been almost 40 years since Classic Space ended. There are plenty of themes since then that people have nostalgia for now that haven't been touched by Lego, save for a SINGLE Bionicle promo and some references.

It’s just a studio rendering and you can’t do a cloth sail element on studio. Plus, Lego will spice it up a bit, although it probably won’t be a cloth sail because it’s a gwp with a limited budget which will already include multiple new printed shields as well as multiple new printed minifigure parts. For a relatively quick studio build of a set from 1992 it’s quite a good representation. It is probably the pinnacle and a worthy remake to be sure!

Perhaps the Black Knights were sailing in the moats around the other castles

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, that's the most predictable outcome there ever was. Really wish we saw the Power Miners build instead. I also wish this was just a normal, Lego-exclusive set since I rather dislike spending exorbitant amounts of money to get a small ship, but that's a bit of a lost cause at this point.

Sea Serpent, Black Knights, not to be confused with the black colored "Serpent Knight" (official description name) in 31168 Medieval Horse Knight Castle, or the Sea Serpent from 31161 Medieval Dragon

This. It's not even the first castle throwback GWP. At least it's a different faction than Black Falcons, Lion Knights, Wolfpack or Forestmen that gets a day in the limelight.

I'm not even mentioning Dragon Knights, which didn't get multiple sets to its name.

Don't get me wrong. It's nice that this will exist. I just kind of hope other themes might get more than a reference on a sticker.

By in Belgium,

I voted for "Pizza to Go… or Stay", but this one is fine.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I like this (a lot) but,

1) It should be easy to replace the front red parts with some inverted slopes and getting a shape a bit more like the original. (A boat of that shape for that time period is reasonable though.)
2) There are unfortunately no suitable parts to replace the dragon from 6057 at the front of the boat. (not quite a figurehead but close).
3) Fell Beast 40693 got two pieces of cloth for the wings so cloth is not completely impossible for the sail of a GWP.
4) I hope this will come in the traditional yellow box.
5) There is a fairly high probability that these torsos will make it to PAB.
I have plenty on my wanted list to meet the requirement to get this.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Cool set for a re-imagination, but not sure if I like the winning attempt. The original had quite interesting shalping, which this new version competely lackes. Sea Serpent? I'd say more like a Sea Dachshund....

And obviously a shame it's gonna be a GWP again.....I sometimes get the feeling Lego is making more GWP I want than regular set I want.....

Quite a sea of serpents they got going on right now

Gravatar
By in United States,

I never heard of this until now when it's too late to vote...
Why did Brickset not cover this contest like all the others?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Judging by the comments I’m in the minority, but I would’ve preferred anything BUT Castle, Pirates or Space, namely Adventurers, Paradisa or Town. We already have had at least a few tribute retro sets to Pirates and Castle and Space recently, in GWP and large set form. This might have been one of the only chances to get something different.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Love the idea and the fan designer has done an excellent job, so congratulations to them!

I would really like to have this in my Mediaeval display.

However I'm not happy about this because it will be a GWP which means sometime in 2026 Lego will force us to buy some super expensive (presumably castle related) set, or miss out.

I wish lego would ban GWPs. Or at the very least sell them as normal sets and give them as actually free gifts with expensive purchases.

That would be a win-win because it means no one misses out and fans can also buy multiple copies (which means more profit for lego)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely the best winner of the 6 competitions thus far. Can't wait to get this set! We need more reimagined castle and pirates!

Gravatar
By in United States,

If the M-Tron homage (which is what I voted for) had won, I'd definitely try to get it one way or the other. This, though... I'm not quite sure. I like it, I'm just not sure how much. And, of course, there's the question of how much it'll change on the journey from submission to final model.

At least we've gotten homages to the characters, but yeah, a re-imagined Adventurers set would be awesome.

They do competitions to become GWPs under the Ideas program. Projects like this get submitted, and voted into winning. That's just the format they were submitted through. However, chances are they wouldn't get picked through the general Ideas program, as they don't want it to just become a way to shoehorn a single theme onto store shelves, and they've already approved a few related projects.

I've said it many times, I'll say it again: Lego should have a theme called: "Legacy" in which the designers would reproduce whatever they want in the old Lego themes. They could do 2 or 3 sets per year of different size and of different themes thus pleasing a much larger portion of their fans. I am a 'Classic Space' guy but I'd like to see Johnny Thunder, Paradisa, Rock Raiders, Aquanauts, etc, you name it.

I also second the notion of sets being sold normally but when you buy a large set you get a GWP of anything Lego below a certain threshold price (which Lego would fix depending on the spending requirement to get said GWP). I won't hold my breath on both of these points...

Gravatar
By in United States,

A spaceship on the water is a great concept! I love it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

While I do love this set, I was hoping the Rock Raiders one would win...
I mean, we get so many castle stuff, giving Rock Raiders a chance after over 20 years outside of small easter eggs would have been nice.

Funnily enough I'm both lol. I'm super happy we got a new Johnny Thunder (and Pippin and Kilroy in sets I'll never afford) just a shame they didn't revive or remaster his hat.

That's a pretty low bar, to be fair.

Can't help but notice that the original had five minifigs, and this only has the three crew from the ship. Take that, Black Falcons!

To my shame I had to look that up! I was really commenting on the fact that, through my lens everything is SPACE. Town is Space with less rockets and no air tanks for some reason. Castle is just Bkacktron Invaders that ran out of fuel and fell into the ground vertically. Fabuland has been revealed to be a prophecy of a game of Animal Crossing played by Space guys while on break, etc., etc.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Hope it's a faithful remake. The original set's RRP was $16.50, which when adjusted for inflation, should have plenty of room for improvement, like including all five minifigs.

That would clearly be better for fans, but clearly worse for TLG. With the GWP way they get to rake in the profits for all the expensive sets you had to buy to get the GWP even if you didn't really want them. If they sold the gift sets, they'd only be getting the profits from those, and a smaller set means smaller profit.

You just answered your own question. For Lego it’s much easier to make it as a gwp. Less effort, only one set without a theme, more income because you have to buy a bigger set. And of course they can do it with stickers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@peterlmorris:
I’ve heard of the “everything is Space” philosophy before, but not taken to quite that extreme. Usually it’s phrased in terms of stuff like Castle just being a very early prequel to Space.

@TheNameWasTaken:
More to the point, GWPs are the thing that allows their direct sales to compete with their retail partners. When they publish MSRP, that basically locks them into charging that price, while any retail chain that stocks their product can sell below that price to try to monopolize the market. By offering GWPs, it allows them to increase the value you receive for the price paid, instead of reducing the cost of the product received.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

If only the sail was cloth. Otherwise great set :)

Gravatar

@Eichinger: Complete agreement; even if the sails were a plastic/foil (like those for wind-surfboard sails), they would be better.

I wouldn't think like that. We're in a boom of nostalgia for Castle, Pirates, and Space, but I believe it will pass and hopefully make way for some other themes. I'm just as frustrated as you, but we shouldn't lose heart. After all, Power Miners was the runner-up, not Space, meaning there is a nonzero interest in outside themes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The play feature of the steerable oars is a big improvement over 6057. As for the rest, this re-imagining feels less modernized than other homage sets have. New pieces are used to good effect in several places, but they don't always evoke or improve on the classic set. Meanwhile, the classic set has several details that are an improvement over this re-make. I wonder what Lego will ultimately do with this.

Looking through the other submissions, the bouncy Yellow Castle is absolutely amazing and I think it deserved the recognition by a mile (although it should have used the rounded cap pieces on the tops of the battlements too).

The Cabana and the Pulsar Charger are also both excellent re-imaginings of classic sets which fully evoke the originals but have a modern design ethos, and they hit themes that Lego hasn't given as much nostalgia love.

Don't forget fans of the 2014 The Lego Movie. They let the 10th anniversary go by without a single nostalgia set, much to my disappointment. Hopefully, we'll get something (perhaps the Master Builders' submarine) for the 30-year anniversary in 2044.

Among the 100's of entries I really don't see the winning 'twist' part, just seems a remake with modern pieces rather than adding something clever or different into the mix, but if that's what people voted for then sure it will be popular.
