LEGO Ideas results announced!

Posted by ,

As confirmed yesterday, the next LEGO Ideas results have been announced today, with two projects to become official sets!

Find out which after the break...

Godzilla by MattE720

Tintin - Space Rocket by Tkel86

In addition, another project from this review period has been placed in the 'parking lot', meaning it remains under consideration to become a set in future:

Camping Trip by terauma

This joins Downton Abbey: Highclere Castle by BRO3, which also remains under consideration.

What do you think of these results? Let us know in the comments.

By in United Kingdom,

Oh lovely to see Godzilla!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I get why a license set could need more consideration/time but no idea why the camping trip would need a longer review?

Unusually, I'm hoping lego makes a few changes to these. I would like to see Tintin lose the launch tower and base and we just get a great classic sci-fi rocket with minifigures of course. And not sure I have said this before but I hope Lego brighten the colour palette up a little for Godzilla.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very nice builds but I’m more interested in the parking lot options.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Ok, I didn't expect it at all, but the only set I was hoping for got thru!!!!!
Up from the depths, 30 stories high, breathing fire, head in the sky....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very excited for Tintin. Finally!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Gojira!!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I guess Godzilla isn't a bad choice can add it to your Modular collection to re-enact Rampage video game

Gravatar
By in United States,

Godzilla is pretty exciting! I wonder what Architecture or Landmark set will end up being closest to being in scale with him.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very surprising considering that Mega has a Godzilla set on the market from last year!

Waiting to see if the weather is going to be okay.

Still hoping for Downton Abbey!

It could be because it is very similar to Off Road Adventure in Series 6 of Bricklink Designer Programme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I get that Tintin is popular and it seems like every round has a model from this IP, so it'll probably do well(?), but I hope they really add to that build because it looks really repetitive and boring.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO Godzilla is a long time coming! But if they were doing two licensed sets, there were so many better and more widely appealing choices than Tintin.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sad that the Moon or Microscope didn't make it. Both would've been neat to see. Godzilla is cool, just kinda tired of licenses. So I really hope the Camping Trip makes it though. Probably waiting until after the similar Bricklink set goes through so they don't compete?

I do wonder if it has anything to do with piece availability. The big helicopter window (62576) to make the shape of the tent hasn't been used since like 2017 and also only in transparent colors so they will probably have to change how the tent looks. And also check with the designer of the set how the rocks are built and attached throughout the bottom so it actually can be built. Yes they change the set when they're designing it but I wonder if it has to be a legal lego build technique set before they can work on it. Those are just my thoughts, not sure exactly.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Was hoping for Godzilla, exciting!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Interesting that both involve external IP.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Only the camping trip was slightly interesting, the rest of this whole pool was pretty bad. The godzilla is yet another buildable figure sadly and the tintin looks a little redundant as well considering 10341, but good for the wallet I guess haha

Gravatar
By in Greece,

I can't believe Tintin is finally getting a set, amazing! What a time to be alive!

Gravatar
By in Norway,

This is the first time in years that something I wanted was actually picked

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Godzilla! Very happy with that pick.

I could be wrong, but perhaps another reason behind the parking lot concept is to keep projects on the back burner in case a future Ideas review period has no projects chosen. I seem to recall there was a review last year where none were selected, so the whole thing was anticlimactic. With projects in the parking lot, there will presumably always be the option to announce one of those.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

:-(

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow! Pleasantly surprised they picked Godzilla.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Amazed that the licenced ideas didn't have the obligatory angled minifigures in the bottom left corner of the picture.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The two parking lots look like very good builds, especially the camping trip, but Godzilla looks awful and the Titin set just looks like a rocket launcher set. I honestly think they should just ditch Ideas and rely on bricklink, as it's very similar.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

OMG WE'RE GETTING LEGO TINTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been waiting my whole life for this moment! I'm just praying it will have figures of Tintin, Snowy and Haddock at the very least. Maybe Calculus, Thomson and Thompson if we're lucky.

Godzilla would be cool as well. I really, really, REALLY want to unleash him in my city!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Now that they got the Tintin license I hope they include minifigures, fingers crossed!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Releasing 2 terauma sets let alone 2 very similar sets at/around the same time makes no sense to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I let myself get my hopes up for the rounds where Thunderbirds was in review, only to be sorely disappointed both times, so I didn't let myself get my hopes up for Tintin. But I'm all smiles now. This is the most excited I've been about Ideas review results in a long time.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

My 11 year old son will be very dissapoited that the Tintin set has no minifig!

Gravatar
By in Spain,

I like Tintin, and that rocket is kind of iconic and all, but it's not very interesting. I hope they'll add a few bits.
But sad that the Moon map, the microscope, Bob Ross, the Wild West Station and the camera have all been turned down.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Well, I suppose the Moulinsart Foundation finally realised how much money they could make with a LEGO Partnership... knowing them, I wager the license fee will be quite high...

I didn't expect any of those, tbh... I'm curious how Godzilla will turn out but I'm sad the Moon didn't make it. That was the only one that trully caught my eye in the list.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The camping trip will pair up nicely with the treehouse and a-frame cabin, so hoping that will made into a set. Still also hopeful for Downton Abbey, not because of the tv series, just the architecture.

This is my guess

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh.

None of these really appeal to me. The camping trip one is the most interesting. The other three all look like they'd be more than a bit tedious to build. That will save me some money, at least.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm more interested in the camping trip which would be a good companion to the A-frame cabin.
Nice to see Tintin and I'd have to see the final set before deciding, but I'm much more of an Asterix fan.
I like Godzilla, but I'll probably skip it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They’ll add minifigs to Tintin if they’re going to fuss at all about the license. Right? Right?

And now I have the theme music running on continuous loop in my head: "...and Godzuki..."!!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was initially a little disappointed that only one set from this actual stage went through, but all of these are potentially interesting models. it will be interesting to see how the two that are confirmed will be interpreted by the Lego designers, I suspect these are two that will be changed significantly by the time it reaches release.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Godzilla set is potentially very interesting but I'm expecting it to be a LOT of money.

Additionally I'd prefer a more classic Toho design and not the one from the thoroughly boring and charmless modern Hollywood films.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I hate camping, but that Camping Out idea looks awesome! Godzilla too. Needs a light brick, though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’ve had the Nanoblock Tintin rocket for years - they did the rocket, Unicorn, Shark Submarine, and Moulinsart - so I’ll probably pass on this unless they do something seriously special. I don’t really need two rockets. Still, I’m delighted to see it redone and I’m very happy a brick-built Tintin rocket will be more widely available.

I do hope the Lego box is as beautiful as the Nanoblock ones were. Packaging doesn’t matter that much, really, but it’s nice to have.

My Godzilla is decidedly Showa era but it depends on the execution. Maybe it’ll be really cool.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bleh

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

1 Year later: "What have they done with the set?! aghhhh!!"
Godzilla will likely change a lot.
Tintin's rocket will also be a pain to get everything smooth

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Until reading the comments I didn't even realise the Rocket was related to Tintin.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Godzilla's cool! Looking forward to seeing how that turns out!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Really glad Tintin will become a set, hopefully with some specialised minifigs, and without the tower… Also, Moulinsart (the company managing all the Tintin-related merchandising) likes expensive products, so I hope the 'Tintin tax' will not be extravagant…

Maybe Godzilla will come with a truckload of fish, cf. the infamous "Godzilla" (1997) quote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZLg1ARnaxE (highlighted by TheNostalgiaCritic).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love both Godzilla and Tin Tin, but neither of the builds themselves are particularly catching my eye. I was most hopeful for the frogs, but I love the Camping Trip and would be interested in seeing the final product should it pass!

That Moulinsart even gave green light to this. I think this will be a very expensive set. But it does need figures

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Love the Godzilla set. It will pair well with some of the mini skyline sets. Look out 21051!

I could see the Tintin set possibly being pulled from the market if they decide that it looks too much like a V2 rocket.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not what i'd have picked to get made, but I can see the appeal of a lego Gojira, even if its just for the 'rampage through your modular city' aspect.

TinTin though.... used to like the comics when I was younger, but feels like these days it'll have very limited appeal.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Godzilla is awful!!! Can't believe those were the choices...

Camping Trip is similar to the Bricklink Off-road Adventure series 6 set...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Godzilla is such an icon, I mean it literally is.
I'm very happy for all of the winners and the parking lot attendees.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Interesting that they didn't pick any from the 54 submissions, just putting one into the parking lot (and that one makes no sense because Bricklink has one that is basically the same)

Godzilla will be great

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Godzilla design will change a lot, I’d wager. Not good or bad thing, it’s just how it usually goes.

Congrats to the designers of the approved projects!

It is japan I think, some companys probably don't care if more than 1 company makes a godzilla about IP. probably just sells to everyone. I could be wrong

read this by someone Toho has some really fussy liscensing rules. Like, you have to purchase the likeness of each individual character that the own to show them. So you'd have to buy the rights for King Ghidorah to make a Ghidorah set, Mothra's rights for a Mothra set, etc.

shrug do not know

Gravatar
By in United States,

SPACE!

(Godzilla is a space).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm disappointed that The Princess Bride failed again, but I wasn't expecting it to make it. It was a nice build though. Maybe next time...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Not what I expected. But what I expect gets never selected, so I'm not surprised :)

It's not a complaint at all, the rocket is most excellent. I don't care much for Godzilla, but I can see it selling very well. I do like the camping scenario, but would have never expected it to be even considered.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Tintin is an odd choice since it has such a small U.S. audience that the Spielberg film crashed in America. Not to say the USA is the only market that counts, but I can't expect the set to do too well in a huge market where the franchise has minimal cultural foothold.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Whoo-hoo! I can save some money on IDEAS sets finally...

The TinTin rocket is iconic, but I don't think I need it.

I have never been into Godzilla. I watched the 1998 Blockbuster and the newer one with the Maximoff twins, but never been into that IP I guess.

The camping trip looks great and I would consider that. It does look similar to the BDP set, but significantly better. So I will skip the BDP version in favor of this one.

Downton Abbey is an instant purchase if it gets chosen. It comes down to scale and if they would include a facade and a lot of the cast, or just a sitting room and key characters. But either way, I'm game. I love new time period prints and designs.

It will sell more for space than tintin.

Gravatar

TINTIN!!!!!

I think this is the first time I've ever been pleased with an Ideas announcement.. although sadly (and totally predictably) the Turing Machine didn't get through. Hopefully they'll add some minifigs, and tbh we don't need the tower. First Ideas set I'll be properly looking forward to for a while now.

I'm not fussed about Godzilla but I can see it doing well. I can also see it being extremely pricy though

The US isn't the only market in the world! No idea how well the film did in the US personally, but wikipedia says it was profitable. Certainly enough so that there have been rumours of a sequel ever since.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thinking downtown abbey would be a thin set (like just a wall or thin like other sets), considering all the minifigures.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Godzilla is cool. Never heard of Tintin. Was hoping for Princess Bride; that was a very clever build.

Or make IDEAS IP based only and keep BDP for anything that can be done without needing IP.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Godzilla looks awesome, and if they make it more colorful I'll probably buy it. I mean the blue or pink Godzilla from the movies with a laserblast would be amazing.

Gravatar

Very happy to see Godzilla make the cut! Curious to see which version/era they'll base it on.

Please give it a sound brick with the iconic roar!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'd be unlikely to buy Godzilla, whatever the final result looks like. Tintin's rocket doesn't really grab me as it stands (mainly because I have no desire to buy the launch tower), but the production set might.

The 1998 American Godzilla is highly disliked. The 2014 American reboot (with Elizabeth Olsen) is more respectful of the source material but has serious issues.

While the original Godzilla movie is actually a very bleak and serious reflection around the Bomb, most of the Japanese Godzilla movies, and there are a lot of them, have been more of a kid oriented special effects monsters fighting monsters series with not much story to them. The more recent American Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire are good homages to that with modern Hollywood budget and effects.

But If I were to recommend a single Godzilla movie it has to be Godzilla Minus One. Thrilling war drama meets monster film that brings back Godzilla's orignal more symbolic and terrifying side. It strikes a nice balance between being fun entertainment and a serious touching story.

It's not really representative of your average Godzilla movie but a proper display of the awe and terror that the King of the Monsters can muster.

Gravatar

@SMC said:
"I get why a license set could need more consideration/time but no idea why the camping trip would need a longer review?"

Could be a lot of things. They only have so many element changes available, so it could be about seeing how compatible the design is with the current parts palette. The final model can’t use illegal techniques, so it could be about how many structural changes they’d need to make. Retired parts would involve needing to cut new molds, which they’d need to pitch to their lead designer (or figure out how work around it). And it could lean too close to a current or upcoming set design.

"And not sure I have said this before but I hope Lego brighten the colour palette up a little for Godzilla. "

They sorta already did. He’s usually depicted as having black skin, so dark-bley is a brighter shade of black.

@LegoHound33:
I’m not sure they take BLDP similarities into consideration.

@Legolover15:
Exo-Suit was apparently an unreleasable mess when it got approved, and the fan designer had to work with the set designer to come up with ways to change the design to make it compliant before it released. So, no, the project can be messy as long as the set designer thinks they can fix all the problems.

@AlfredHitchcock:
All I ever heard was “no more than 50% IP”, but there are a lot of ways to interpret that. For one thing, contests probably fall outside of that restriction, as many outright ban IP submissions, while the D&D one seems impossible to avoid being IP. The music contest that yielded the Fender Stratocaster could have gone either way. I would think that rule only applies to general submissions, but then I also don’t remember when it got implemented. They may just keep a running tally, and if the count skews more non-IP, then they could slip a few IP sets through by themselves. Going back to 21321, the first project released in 2020, and excluding any project that I’m sure were involved in contests or fan votes of any kind, they actually were all tied up until now. Unless they changed recently, this would seem to be a violation of that 50% rule. Maybe that’s why the camping trip is in the parking lot, if they need to push some non-IP projects through to get back in compliance, but they weren’t really sure that’s the one they wanted.

@CapnRex101:
The “Parking Lot” term is new, but the process is not. And I think they had one review some years back when they declined an entire review class, plus two more that had been held over for further consideration. It’s still not a guarantee.

@daniellesa:
But isn’t BLDP sourced from rejected Ideas projects?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

For the first time ever both selections were projects I had supported. That's not to say I'll buy them as I supported both as "ideas", not "finished models". I do expect LEGO to make changes. However, some changes are too far. I supported and was excited by The Orient Express but the drastic changes they made resulted in a model I no longer wanted.

Some have mentioned the lack of minifigures in the Tintin set. Now, I've never been bothered by minifigures, I buy a set for the main build, but with something as iconic as Tintin it would be ridiculous to not include minifigures,

Highclere Castle is the one I really want them to make. I did watch and enjoy Downton Abbey but it's the architecture I'm interested in. It would need to be more than a facade though.

On the one hand I'm a little disappointed it's two more IP sets, but on the other hand they both look great and LEGO GODZILLA!!!!!! Take my money!!!!!

Sometimes I wonder why they choose some and decide to let others go. The phases of the moon or the camera were awesome! Not that I mind Godzilla… but some are just meh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Zero interest in either of these which I guess is a good thing since I'm finding way more interesting sets in the BrickLink Designer stuff these days. So that's becoming an expensive habit. I just wish they would stop dragging out the decision for Downton Abbey and give it a go or denial. The Camping one is cute but as already mentioned would compete with the BLDP one.

Gravatar

Of course we’re not. But we’re still the largest consumer-nation, last I heard. And the only country that’s likely to overtake us is China. Excluding the Shinkai and Hayabusa that resulted from a platform that was only open to Japan, and produced sets only marketed to Japan, any Ideas set that was based on a non-American IP at least had a significant fan base in the US. I’m not sure Tintin does. But maybe it has enough international appeal that it can be a flop here and still do well overall (or maybe they’re just hoping that’s the case).

@winbrant:
Possibly, but then why not just cancel it outright? It’s not like they owe us an explanation for every rejection, and they’ve rejected projects only to announce a similar set soon afterwards.

No interest in Godzilla, Downton Abby or the camping set.

Quite surprised at the surprise at Tintin - it really isn’t that long ago that it was licensed to a different brick-built thingamabobberies company so the license owners clearly don’t have any sort of general objection to the concept of building Tintin rockets out of little plastic bricks.

By in Australia,

About time we got Lego Tintin!

While the rocket is very iconic and would also appeal to the 'space' market, I really hope the eventual lego Tintin set includes multiple models from different stories.

At the very least include the blue jeep with Tintin, Haddock, Calculus and Snowy with the rocket and launchpad.

I wonder if we could ever get a Lego Tintin theme, like how Ghostbusters Ecto 1 and Pirates of Barracuda Bay started a line of more sets.

The Aurora or Karabujan for example would make a great ship model to go along with Endurance, Titanic and such.

Likewise the Unicorn (Haddock's ancestor's ship) would be a great pirate ship that many fans would love.

I saw a "meh" rocket (I actually thought it was a V2) and with a very quick glance, read it as "Titan space rocket".

That TinTin's rocket ship better come with TinTin, Haddock, Calculus, the twins and the snowy figures. I don't need the ramp, just land it on one of those older moon baseplates... Oh, and the micro build moon tank.

It is unfortunate.

I'm not one to poo-poo a cover simply because its a cover, I'm all for artists doing faithful covers in there own voice/style, as well as new/different interpretations, but this one is an over-produced hot-mess. Almost feels like they couldn't decide if it should be "epic" or faithful to the original and landed somewhere in the middle with a confused mess.

I wasn't aware of it until your comment, but had to give it a listen since I'm generally a fan of the original and enjoy System of a Down/Serj's stuff from time to time.

I think there's room for an "updated" [for lack of a better descriptor] cover, somewhere between Serj's and Blue Oyster Cult's that could be interesting, as I do have some conflicting feelings toward the original owing to that fact it is not without a bit of cheese. Serj's version fell short of the mark however.

Sure. Yet, that doesn't answer the essential question.

Meh more oversized licensed sets. Ideas should could come with a commitment to buy when voting. That would quickly put an end to these and then great builds like the Camping Trip wouldn't be put in a parking lot...

Georges Remi, or better known as Hergé, the creator of Tintin, is only one of the most important and influential comic artists of the world. Maybe, when you don’t know about something, you can go read about it and educate yourself a little bit. And before you know it a whole new world full of new inspiration has dawned upon you.

And how exactly are you going to do that within consumer law? If you click a button on a website without any pricing then you are forced to pay for something about 12-18 months later, which will not be the thing you saw as they reserve the right to change it.

If LEGO want to make Camping Trip now they can. Nothing is stopping them, especially licensed ideas. BDP is mainly large unlicensed sets and there are more of them these days per year than IDEAS.

That ski jump is how we call him in Dutch. Well, not ski jump, but quiff: ‘Kuifje’. But i think i am going to rename him in ‘Springschans’.

By in Netherlands,

The organization licensing TinTin, 'Tintinimaginatio SA', formerly 'Moulinsart', is known for being strict, and putting a high price on licensing (I've worked for a studio that had a licensing deal with them).
I'm confident that the design will be excellent, but not hopeful at all this set will be affordable :-(.

Gravatar
By in United States,

TinTin is a chemical element with the symbol SnSn (from the Latin words "stannum leviosa") and atomic number 50/50

It's silver-white, soft, and malleable with a ski jump-like quiff and bluish tinge. It's pliable enough to be cut and molded into a Great Wave shape. And it can sometimes be found in Space or Europe.

Because he’s a guy? Girls have it on their noses, and apparently guys get it sculpted into their hair, I guess.

By in Germany,

It's crazy that a program designed to lets fans of a creative toy express their creativity returns "I want a set of this thing/person/place from this or that existing IP" 80% of the time. Very disappointing.

My vote is on the Camping Trip set.

LEGO in Danish roughly translates to "Static Display of Oversome Cost"

Oh, definitely, but if ever a LEGO Ideas idea warranted a humongous set, it must certainly be Godzilla, right? Surely I’m not the only one hoping for a Godzilla that appears to be a reasonably good fit scale-wise with minifigures, that can be plunked down into the middle of our tabletop LEGO cities to wreak brick havoc…

Way to perpetuate American stereotypes! You know, there’s this thing called Google that can answer these sorts of questions. But here you go:

The rocket is not very interesting, and there are plenty of brick built Lego dinosaurs already. Whereas the campsite has a certain charm, and there were lots of others which should also have being added or selected.

I was also surprised to see Lego Tintin.

Aside from the rocket from "Destination Moon" and "Explorers on the Moon," the other iconic Tintin vehicle is Professor Calculus's shark-proof submarine. That would also make an interesting Lego set -- I hope the Tintin rocket gets a spinoff!

We’ve got one in our club that’s bigger than this set will be for sure, so I’m actually ambivalent to the idea. I wouldn’t ever try to display it at a show where someone was bringing a MOC version, and I don’t know that I’d want to build it at home either. So if I got one, it might just sit in the box.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

To clarify my previous comment, Tintin in the Shark submarine would be a far more interesting display piece that I would buy.
