Ideas competition winners announced!

Posted by ,

The winning entries of the LEGO Ideas competitions Build Your Nostalgia – 90s Throwback! and 90s Throwback – The Next Chapter! have been announced, and they are both crackers!

There have been several Wallace and Gromit submissions to LEGO Ideas over the years and at last one has prevailed! Pidelium's model of the hapless pair riding a motorcycle and sidecar will be made into a model, as will WetWired's awesome X-Files: The Truth is Out There, which you can view after the break.

They are both franchises and models that I can get behind so I look forward to being able to buy them next year!

By in United Kingdom,

Wallace and Grommit translate into LEGO really well. Probably the best example of it.

By in United Kingdom,

I'm happy for both of these, but especially for the X-Files. Mythology arc aside, it's one of my favourite TV shows of all time, and the design here is a delight!

Goonies is missing from the Ideas backlog list.

It's in the competition winners list.

By in United Kingdom,

Disappointed to see Mr Bean miss out, but yeah I’ll definitely be picking up Wallace & Gromit.

Gravatar
By in United States,

While I'm sad Buffy didn't win (solely because libraries have been severely underrepresented in Lego) step closer to getting an Agent Denise Bryson minifig

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I just hope the Wallace and Gromit bike will scale well with 76443 Hagrid's motorcycle

By in United Kingdom,

Wow and Wow, Yes and Yes but they are going to be rather expensive. Best start saving now.

No interest in X-Files, but Wallace and Gromit look brilliant!

Thank you. Guess I gotta put my good eyes on! ;)

By in Canada,

Both are very nice. I have not followed much of Wallace and Gromit over the years but I'll definitely get the X-Files diorama (because Space!). X-Files is amongst my favourite series of all time. Hoping the final result won't be too distorted.

I might even consider getting Wallace and Gromit as well because it is very well done (assuming Lego keep it that way).

Extremely rare that Lego selects ideas sets for which I have an interest - the end must be near ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wallace and Grommit looks brilliant, and perfectly translates to Lego form!

The fan designed X files set looks amazing, but I'd bet a lot the final set won't look nearly as cool. Still... as a huge X files fan, it'll be cool to have Lego Mulder and Skully available. And maybe the Cigarette Smoking Man!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, one out of two ain’t bad. And I guess this means Jose Whedon won’t be making any money off the Next Chapter contest, so at least there’s that.

Top-tier reason for wanting David Duchovny in LEGO form.

By in United Kingdom,

Would’ve liked Mr Bean (will we ever see him in minifig form other than knock off brands?) and Wallace and Gromit, but I’m glad at least one of them won.

Side note, really appreciate the summary at the end of where we are at with Ideas! I’d forgotten at least half of them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I personally was hoping for the Fifth Element set, but I knew X-Files was the likely winner.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Mr. Bean was the only one that interested me.

So I guess that means I'm saving money. Nice.

Gravatar
By in France,

I'm an AFOL with a large collection and a Wallace & Gromit fan. Yet, I will only buy the Wallace & Gromit set if it includes minifigures of the Wallace and Gromit characters.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Smashing ideas winners!

I really wanted the X Files, rewatching it currently, brilliant series.

And I hope the Wallace and Gromit one does not turn out anything like the awful HP set.

It's a shame Btvs didn't get there, but I think that the designs could have been a lot better than they were and it was unfair for it to be represented in both competitions.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wallace and Gromit looks good, but I have zero interest in it. I had zero interest in it all of the second wave of 90s throwbacks. I'm looking forward to the X-Files set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Let's go! Lego X-Files, Star Trek, and Pokemon all in the same year?

If 10 year old me could see me now, he would cry for joy.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Things are getting strange - I’m starting to worry.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just re-watched X-Files recently, it was a lot of fun and holds up pretty well (the only hard part is choosing when to stop--the "endings" get progressively worse the longer you choose to stick it out). I wouldn't mind Mulder & Scully minifigs, but not sure I'm interested in an entire set. The detail of Mulder's office is great, though.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I'm so happy. I haven't even watched the X-files, but this model is so cool. And Wallace & Grommit is for me nostalgic. I would love to build those funny clay models. This version recreated the face expressions very well! And the magnifying glasses, great NPU.

I don’t know what season it’s from, but the one episode I remember trying out posited that someone was killed by being forced to produce pheromones, which humans don’t produce. Poppycock. We do produce them, but in westernized society, we’ve trained ourselves to be revolted by the smell of armpits. So I changed the channel. Also, I wasn’t fond of either of the main cast’s performances.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Cracking news, Mulder!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wallace & Gromit is cute but I don't think I'd actually buy it. Zero interest in X-files. Good thing there are plenty of other sets that I can spend my money on.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Nice ones! I never was enough of an X-Files fan to buy this, but I doe really like what I see. But that Wallace and Gromit, even when I'm not even that huge of a fan, that seems like a sure buy for me. So please Lego, don't mess this up!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The X-Files win made me audibly exclaim “YES!” So exited to see where that set nets out, and I hope it retains the section, spirit, and detail of the original submission.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

X-Files! X-Files! X-FILES!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Let’s go!!!! So excited for W&G!!!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Wallace and Grommit look great. I also like the X-Files design, despite never having seen the show (I hope it aged better than Californication). I doubt it will look as good as in the pics, though, because the lighting really helps here, and we know LEGO's not going to put any lights in it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, another TV interior set, but at least it's not another sitcom and the builder did something original!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow, my bank account has just taken a sharp intake of breath. These are both must buys for me, but I bet they’ll be pricey!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've seen two episodes and somehow watched the movie, even though I knew nothing about their history together.

It was the one where Mulder was living in a HOA area and there was a sewer monster attacking people if they didn't comply with the rules (I just remember him and a basketball hoop). The other was he went into a video game to defeat someone and the one person had his guns across his chest like an X because it showed no fear. Then that guy died because this is real!...

Maybe I could try to give it another shot sometime. I don't have time for tv most nights, so rewatching older stuff is tricky. Either way, I will welcome the new set and consider getting it if done right.

Gravatar
By in United States,

X-files day one purchase for me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I should be the target demographic for this theme. Yet, these are not appealing to me. Neither of these IPs have any emotional pull for me whatsoever (my son is still deathly afraid of/emotionally scarred by W&G Wererabbit). I could possibly get them on clearance.

I wasn't watching regular TV in the 90s. I was out doing stuff. Maybe, if it was music-related or about anime?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’m a little disappointed that that smashing Fifth Element set didn’t make it, but the Wallace and Gromit one is delightful, and I hope even more so after it’s had a sprinkling of Lego designer fairy dust. The X-Files one seems perfectly decent but I never really watched it, so unless that changes before release it isn’t a set for me. Happy for the fans, though.

Curse of the Wererabbit is indeed scary so my kids never got into it (or chicken run). I’ll try Shaun the Sheep again.

Unrelatedly, I just visited my first LEGO Discovery store and was flabbergasted to find that they had Fel Beasts and Shackleton Lifeboats. Yada Yada I now own Barad Dur and convinced them to throw in a lifeboat.

Watch The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. instead. It’s a lot shorter a commitment, a much better show, more realistic science, and it deserves some love for taking the Friday Night Death Slot hit instead of the X-Files. Also, it has a classier theme song, which saw years of use during Olympics coverage (right up until about the time they released it on DVD and people sitting at home started wondering why they were surprised when there was no sports coverage during the show).

And if he saw the prices those sets are likely to cost he would cry for sadness of not being able to afford them (and the parents neither).

Grrrrrrrrrr!!!!

I was just in Boston and D.C. too!!! %^*?!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Yay! Wallace & Gromit! About time!
I have the theme song in my head now LOL.

The fan designer did a great job, especially with Gromit considering he's completely brick-built.

I don't have interest in The X Files though a traditional alien & UFO set could be popular and it would be good if the set gives us more minifigures with regular suits.

That office build and the forest could be a good parts pack depending on the price.

Congratulations to the designers! :)

By in United States,

One of these days I really need to get around to watching Wallace and Gromit. The only Aardman stuff I've seen was Chicken Run, Flushed Away, ad the episode of Star Wars: Visions they did, "I am Your Mother." But I enjoyed those, so I'm sure I'd enjoy W&G.

These won't be coming out this year, the designers still have to adapt the models. There's also still a lot of other stuff in the Ideas backlog.

No idea about the episode, but W&G feels a lot less frenetic (at least from Wallace's side) than Chicken Run or Flushed Away. The humor also feels a lot more quintessentially British. Still haven't watched the new film, but I liked the rest enough that I made minifigs of W&G and put them in my Routemaster bus.

By in Sweden,

This is the most common sense decision I've seen from Lego since I started collecting in late 1970's.
Perfection, well done.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Recolour of 76443 perhaps.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

So there is X files to look forward to... besides Italian riviera and sea serpent... nice

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Zero surprise the X-files set was one of the winners. Really hope they don't change much as its near perfect as is and was one of the ones I voted for.

As for Wallace and Gromit, again, zero surprise it won, though the proportions need tweaking for me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

X-Files set is cool, but that Wallace & Grommit set is one of the best translations of a non-Lego property into Lego that I have ever seen. I'm not even really a W&G fan, but I'll probably pick that up purely because of how well-made it is. It looks just like the claymation. From a distance, it almost doesn't even look like Lego. I'm blown away by how well that captures the look of the claymation.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I love 'm both!!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wallace and Gromit is well done and the larger scale allows more detail which really shows off the skill of the designer. I life the UFO shaping kept distinctly vague, but I don't remember an office in X-files, although I do remember lots of secret experimentation labs which would look great if they didn't keep disappearing when people asked too many questions.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

I don't know how, I don't know when, I don't know where, but that X-Files set will be mine.

By in Finland,
