Review: 75432 V-19 Torrent Starfighter

Posted by ,

We are nearing twenty years since the arrival of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and an array of sets based on the animated film, including 7674 V-19 Torrent and a polybag iteration. The vehicle has not appeared in LEGO form since, until the new 75432 V-19 Torrent Starfighter!

I was fortunate to see this model at the London Toy Fair in January and was surprised by the dramatic difference between the 2025 and 2008 designs, which share basically nothing in common, so I fully understand the split reaction to the set so far. Nonetheless, I think it has proven to be a pleasant surprise, ultimately!

Summary

75432 V-19 Torrent Starfighter, 567 pieces.
£59.99 / $64.99 / €64.99 | 10.6p/11.5c/11.5c per piece.

The V-19 Torrent has never looked better and its minifigures are excellent too

  • Very impressive proportions and accuracy
  • Sturdy and swooshable
  • Great minifigures, especially Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • I miss the original set's functions
  • Difficult to display

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Minifigures

Early seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars have rarely been revisited in LEGO Star Wars, so Obi-Wan Kenobi has not appeared in his full Clone Wars armour since 2012. The dark orange hair element remains very similar to the original minifigure from 2008, but everything else has been completely overhauled and the minifigure looks outstanding as a result.

The printed arms are an obvious highlight, accurately decorated with the Jedi Order sigil and a wrist communicator, but the torso and legs also capture fantastic detail. I love the knee armour partially visible under Obi-Wan's robes, for example. The new double-sided head is superb too, featuring more versatile expressions than other recent versions of the character.

A standard Clone Trooper helmet with yellow markings sufficed in 2008, but expectations have risen since then, so the new Clone Pilot wears a new helmet. The sculpted detail is lovely and the yellow design looks nice from the front, but should extend further back, between a couple of grey panels. The lack of printing on the back was likely a manufacturing limitation.

Ideally, the visor would be a little wider too, but this design closely mirrors the pilots' live-action appearance. Otherwise, the life support pack on the torso looks good, as does the usual Clone Trooper head. Obi-Wan wields his blue lightsaber and the pilot is armed with a blaster pistol, as ever.

Asajj Ventress last appeared in minifigure form a decade ago, so it is wonderful to see Count Dooku's assassin again. The minifigure from 7676 Republic Attack Gunship was primarily dark blue, but purple is arguably a little closer to the onscreen colour and the wraps on the torso and legs are accurate to the animated series too.

However, I wish Ventress had included printed arms to continue those wraps, as only a small area of her pale skin should actually be visible. In addition, the character's most recognisable garb arguably includes her long skirt, ideally represented by the dress element created for the Elite Praetorian Guard in 2018.

Ventress' facial tattoos look splendid and even her pale blue eyes do not bother me too much, although I still think features like this should be reserved for characters who are possessed or energised in some way. However, I am happy to see the curved lightsaber hilts again because this element last appeared in 2016, so I was concerned it may not return.

The Completed Model

At the outset of the Clone Wars, the V-19 Torrent was the Republic's main starfighter and one often featured in the animated series. This vehicle's slender shape is instantly recognisable in flight configuration, but the model is more easily displayed in landing mode, which is not nearly as appealing, unfortunately.

Nevertheless, its design is pretty faithful to the source material in either configuration, far more so than 7674 V-19 Torrent. The absence of folding landing gear is perhaps disappointing, but a few plates on the underside suffice and the flat landing position is accurate. Similarly, I am quite happy with the fighter's proportions when viewed from the side, although it is far from attractive on display!

7674 V-19 Torrent is remembered for a remarkable function, as the central S-foil was linked to those on either side and the landing struts, so they would move in unison. This rendition of the starfighter lacks that mechanism, as the S-foils instead move independently. I wish the function was retained in some regards, although the V-19's fuselage is much improved without Technic shock absorbers on top.

Unfortunately, you cannot easily display the vehicle in flight configuration, as it cannot balance on the central S-foil. A couple of trans-clear bricks sufficed as supports for these images, but a sturdier solution would be required for long-term display. Regardless, the fighter looks fantastic and is an ideal size for play, with a 31cm wingspan and 19cm height in flight mode.

The central stabiliser also serves as a perfect handle, firmly connected to the underside of the fuselage using clips. Honestly, it is hard to resist swooshing the model around and I confess to doing so at the Toy Fair earlier this year, albeit only briefly!

The angled wings are sturdy as well, attached to the engines using large ball joints, which offer ample friction. The dark red patterns on these wings correspond with the source material and a couple of stickers are applied here as well, including a classic Republic cog. Moreover, the laser cannons look good on the wing tips, alongside stud shooters.

Stickers are also applied on the front of the engines, forming the nacelle intakes. I prefer these round tiles to be printed wherever possible, but at least the designs look nice. The black pieces further back on the engines are effective too, incorporating some barrel elements for texture and with trans-blue 2x2 sliders providing the engine glow.

The elongated engines are among my favourite features of the V-19 Torrent, so I am pleased they are properly represented. Furthermore, the olive green pieces between the engines look strange initially, but again match the vessel in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, while the clip in the middle anchors the stabiliser in its raised position.

Another olive green detail appears ahead of the cockpit, surrounded by smooth bodywork. The trans-yellow canopy has divided opinion. I think this colour works to capture the polarised finish seen in certain episodes of the animated series, but I understand why some people favour trans-black, which would also be accurate. Blacktron fans will doubtless appreciate the choice!

There is room for the Clone Pilot inside, albeit leaning back a fair amount because so much of the fuselage's depth is needed to strengthen the clips supporting the stabiliser. I think the body shape behind the cockpit could be refined a little, as the angular 2x4 wedge plates are awkward, although there is additional armour here on the original vehicle.

A final sticker is placed inside the cockpit, corresponding with the circular console design seen throughout Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I would love to see more elements like this one printed and kept in production, as generic consoles are commonly needed in Star Wars sets.

Overall

75432 V-19 Torrent Starfighter is definitely in the running for my favourite Star Wars set of the summer. This model lacks the outstanding functionality of its predecessor, but looks far better overall and feels stronger as well. As mentioned earlier, this is a set that really demands to be flown around the room!

The minifigures are another highlight. Obi-Wan is highly detailed and I like the new Clone Pilot, while Asajj Ventress is a great inclusion too. Even the price of £59.99, $64.99 or €64.99 seems relatively reasonable, so I can certainly recommend the set, which will hopefully be the first of many to come based on the earlier seasons of The Clone Wars.

I love this set and hope that Lego makes phase 1 clone troopers again... like really. The plain ones looked way better than the new plain phase two ones

I like the set and love the figs. Plus, it's the only SW summer set that is fairly priced.

This will probably be my last Lego purchase of the year. I’m just being priced out so completely right now

I really like this set, probably'll be my last Star Wars purchase this year, I can't stomach the price of any of the other ones.

Another solid addition to the Clone Wars set collection. One to keep an eye out for in the future!

By in United States,

Looks pretty solid! I love the new helmet mold, and the Obi-Wan looks incredible! I don’t like it in landed position, I think it needed a set of landing gear. That said, in flight position it looks really nice. The Ventress looks good, but I’m just happy about the hilts. The Trans-Yellow cockpit is so exciting! Definitely buying this one. Happy to have a couple nice sets after the tiny turbo tank and the mtt.

The only other thing besides the not available landing mechanism are the engine stickers that make the model look cheap. Else, I'm in!

Completely agree. I never really understood the obsession with Phase 2 clones; I've always thought the Phase 1 designs were so much cooler.

You can’t go wrong with trans-yellow canopies! Classic Space AND Blacktron 1 fans are in agreement over that.

I’m excited to see them continue to be made. It’ll be interesting to compare the new MABS trans-yellow with older PC under UV light.

By in United States,

Thank you for the review!

That Obi-Wan figure is lovely. Ventress has grown on me too, even though I really wish she had her skirt. I think that red sash she wears over it helps balance the color scheme.

I hate to be that guy, but Obi-Wan's hair is different from 2008! That was part 61196, which is a bit more angular with a more dramatic combover and less pronounced sideburns than the sleeker/rounder modern part. Obi-Wan has been using 99930, which debuted in 2012 for Robin, for a long time though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bizarre that in 2025 Lego still cannot seem to make an indigo plastic. They're stuck oscillating between blue and purple but it looks worse and worse by the year. Pokémon better introduce some new colours because that Ventress in purple is just not it.

Not a bad set. Made me want the Phase 1 clones to return so much.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't know, for some reason, I'm not a huge fan of this set. The proportions just don't look right to me. I also don't like when they include stud blasters instead of spring-loaded shooters on sets like this.

That being said, the minifigures are fantastic. That new Obi-Wan is a definite contender for minifig of the year, and is probably the best version we've ever had of the character. That Phase I Clone Pilot is quite good, too. I could see him showing up again a year or two from now in a Microfighter, possibly a remake of 75076.

By in United Kingdom,

I love the look of this. My favourite piece of Star Wars media ever is the 2003 Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars series, so it's brilliant to have this and the ARC-170 this year to represent it, even unofficially. I'll likely get a minifigure-free version of this on eBay and that splendid Clone Pilot separately.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm actually watching Clone Wars for the first time with a friend, and was thinking I may need a Lego version of that ship.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This version of the vehicle just looks really short and stubby to me... but then, so does the official reference image, because for so long my primary frame of reference for this vehicle has been the original Lego set*, so even though that one's proportions are off, they're still the ones that look "right" to me.

* Apparently that shouldn't have been the case; a check of Wookieepedia just reminded me that these featured in - and in fact were first designed for - the 2D Clone Wars microseries, but as much as I love that show I honestly wouldn't have remembered that if it hadn't said. Checking it, they even got a handful of clear shots in a couple of episodes, but I guess never really felt like the focus of the scene to someone like me who was always more interested in the characters than the vehicles.

Hm. Thinking that, then, with a couple of tweaks and a slightly different minifigure selection (by which I guess I mean complete-armour Obi, and Durge instead of another Ventress), this would have made quite a neat companion ship to 75087 Anakin's Azure Angel. Not that I have that set either, but I do always like to see a good bit of original Clone Wars representation xD

I second that.
No, make that the only thing that interests me in this set is the canopy piece.
Interestingly enough it doesn't look as milky in the pictures as other MABS trans-pieces.
Perhaps they have finally managed to perfect the manufacturing process.

Lego SW prices are increasing at LUDICROUS SPEED and will surely go straight to plaid!

Another great review that captures most of my thoughts about this set. As the Cap'n said, the set's price is only "relatively reasonable." I will wait. The Boycott is in effect.

That said, I must offer praise were it's due. The Obi fig is superb. The clone pilot and Ventress are really nice to see, but are tragically missing full helmet and arm printing respectively. Ventress also really needs a skirt in plastic or cloth... and pupils!! It's nice to see her blade handles again.

I appreciate the designer's attempt to capture accurate details for the ship. However, it really needs a bit more wing and landing gear. Without either it looks way too chibi. The old one 7674 was a masterpiece (regardless of relative accuracy). It's a shame that the new design cannot be regarded as an improvement after so many years.

I agree 100%. I'm not planning on buying any of the August sets, even at a discount. Which stinks, cause I really wanted an MTT and a Turbo Tank.

Agreed; I will wait until next May the 4th in the hopes of a discount, if not just extra VIP points + a GWP.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I really like the look of this set, much improved over the original. That was overly massive, and neat as it was, the function suffered on account of that – moving the wings around does not feel too good with how heavy they are. They also never seem to go quite far enough down into flight mode and always require extra pushing and nudging.
This is a much neater and tighter build in comparison, and the minifigs are great too. Best set of the summer wave, even if that is not massively strong competition.

Once upon a time, I used to call the manager at my local Lego store and ask her to reserve every set from the new SW wave for me to purchase on D1. Those days have faded like a rider on the wind.

This MTF set the standard for me. The cool GWP, the double-quadruple points, the discounts. It equates to 40% off in most circumstances. That is when I buy.

I'd have rathered this was a CW2003 version, but since the only real difference for the model is the canopy color it's fine enough. We really just need literally any CW2003 sets, it's ridiculous we only have one after all this time.

75087 doesn't count?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll take the colored eyes on this Ventress minifigure; after all, her design in the 2003 series had fully white eyes with no pupils, so it works as a sorta compromise between her classic bleached look, the pale bony witch of 2008, and the softer design seen in the 2020s.

I'm a little iffy on the olive green here, mostly because it and its distribution seems to be in line with the dark red, white, and green palette that unified this ship, Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter, and the Republic Gunship, and recently that green has been interpreted as lime (occasionally as sand green). Olive green isn't an incorrect choice, but with 75333 still in print, it seems like a miss to break cohesion.

As @ThatBionicleGuy said, with a few modifications this could have been a 2003 Clone Wars set, with minifigs of their versions of General Kenobi and Assaj (or a Durge) and a trans-black canopy. Granted, the livery on the 2003 version is slightly different than on the 2008 version, most visible on the central stabilizer, where the red stripe is on the other edge, and the canopy was more forward with a slightly different shape, but for most nostalgic purposes, just swapping out the canopy for trans-black would be enough to scratch the itch, with further modifications up to individual preference.

I'll say it again, 75354 should have been the iconic "Muunilinst 10" livery for the anniversary. It's a variant that's in higher demand among prequel builders of all factions, is very bold on a store shelf, and would also scratch a nostalgia itch for people who wanted 10195, which sorta-kinda-not-really had that colorway. It still bugs me that for the "20th anniversary of the Clone Wars" they completely botched which version of the Clone Wars actually turned 20...

As mentioned on the article about the UT-AT, it'd be nice if they made a set of a SPHA, and then they could put Durge and Obi-Wan on speeder bikes as side builds-- then you could do IG droid speeders as a battle pack (like a more 2003-based version of 8015) to expand the fight...

This is my favorite set of the summer wave. The ship hasn’t been made in a long time, and it comes with great figures. The price is the most reasonable of the summer sets. I’ll be grabbing this and the slave I(because of Lamu Su) at the regular 20% off. I’ll be waiting for the MTT, turbo tank and 327th to hit 30-40% off before I touch those.

I should add that the ship does seem a little off when landed, I bet it would look better if the wings were just 1-2 studs longer.

The idea for the 20th anniversary of the Clone Wars, which Lucasfilm and therefore LEGO communicated horribly, was to acknowledge the Clone Wars era more broadly. Attack of the Clones was obviously released in 2002 and Revenge of the Sith three years later, so the Clone Wars was supposed to be happening in the intervening period, figuratively, which the anniversary was intended to reflect.

Unfortunately, the execution of the anniversary left much to be desired and I totally agree about the Muunilinst 10 Republic Gunship.

@CapnRex101:
Ventress’ hilt has made several appearances, on and off, for nearly a decade, including two appearances in the Ninjago theme. While I wouldn’t expect them to hang on to that design continuously between uses, I wasn’t at all surprised that they brought it back when I saw they made another minifig of her (not that this stopped me from buying a large bag of them several years ago). What would shock me is the return of Dooku’s hilt. It’s even more specialized than Ventress’, hasn’t been seen since 2013 (three years before the last time this one popped up), and was only ever been produced in chrome. Where the standard hilt was useful enough across other themes to quickly make the jump from a chrome-ready mold to a standard mold, Dooku’s never did. It would have had to be completely re-dimensioned to work without the chrome layer, and it’s just easier to keep shoving a new version of Darth Maul in front of our collective faces as a distraction.

Looks great in flying mode. Never be afraid to swoosh in public - EXCELLENT :o)

As a general criticism of the overall design of a V-19 Torrent - that S-foil is just an accident waiting to happen. Major clotheslining hazard. But does look cool.

Ah, alright. I managed to get it a few years after release, before (like all Lego seems to these days) it became an investment tool. It's a fantastic set, and I really wish that instead of including Ventress with it, they had made it smaller, and made a Ginivex-class (Ventress' fanblade fighter) as another set to 'oppose' it as Lego likes to do.

There's a few more differences. There's a kind of slot in the wings, you can see where a ladder is placed there in the show. And the engines are much shorter.

However this matches the concept art and how it appeared in the Dark Horse comics from 2003-2004.

Not just limited to LEGO. Hasbro, Hot Toys, and other merchandisers, all drew from the 2008 show. Not a single thing came from the 2003 Multimedia Project, for the so called "20th Anniversary."

Frankly its the only Star Wars set from this year I'm certain I'll get, but even then it feels overpriced by a good $15 or so. Come clearance I'll probably grab it. (Ventress' head bothers me a lot too. Thankfully I have the Star Wars: Clone Wars iteration from 2015 to supplicate it.)

I really like this set, and the minifigs are a winner! I might have to pick it up early, my local Wal-Mart put out the entire wave already, and this is the only one worth getting without a big discount.

Lego might be pricing Star Wars sets beyond where people are going to pay soon. This wave is hard proof.
