Review: 42674 Comic Book and Game Shop
Posted by MeganL,When I reviewed 42661 Costume Party, I loved the minidolls but bemoaned that only four of the regular Friends crew had fantastic outfits. That oversight has been corrected in 42674 Comic Book and Game Shop, where the rest of the Friends crew is getting their cosplay on!
As the set name indicates, there's a store associated with the fantastic outfits, so we might as well take a look at that as well.
Summary
42674 Comic Book and Game Store, 1,005 pieces.
£79.99 / $99.99 / €89.99 | 8.0p / 9.9c / 9.0c per piece.

The first comic book shop is a great addition to the Heartlake retail community
- Appropriately brightly coloured buildings
- Great cosplay outfits!
- Adorable plushies
- Working vending machine
- None
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
Inside the box there are eight numbered bags, two 8x16 plates, three instruction books and a rather large sticker sheet. Not surprisingly, several of the stickers look like they will be adorning comic book covers.
Minidolls
There are four minidolls in this set, and sure enough, it's the four Friends crew who weren't found at the costume party.
Zac is first up, and he's cosplaying as a robot. His headgear is impressive, but I have to believe that's really heavy and not quite practical to wear for a long period of time. Next is Nova, making an appearance as a galactic explorer. Classic space fans will love the classic space logo on her shirt, and I love that she's wearing pink metallic boots. Third in the party is Liann, who is dressed as a superhero, cape included! Her purple mask matches her cape, and she's wearing yellow gloves to match her jumpsuit. Finally, there's Aliya, who lego.com describes as a mediaeval knight, but who I think looks much more like an elven warrior (those look like elven ears to me). Knight or warrior, her gold epaulettes look terrific with her gold boots.
Zac and Nova also have hairpieces included, and it looks like Nova is expanding her colour range with a pink do. This also lets us see the design on Zac's torso. I originally thought this would be the same as the space farers in previous Friends sets, but this is different.
The rear printing is not particularly detailed, but there are some interesting details, such as the panel on Zac's back.
It's quite amazing, but there are no cute animals in this set!
The completed model
The building is very colourful, and it's evident that this set is more than a comic book and game shop, as it looks like there's a refreshment store on onside. The Friends designers have continued their fondness for using the very very very bright yellow colour as an accent around the ground floor windows of the comic book shop.
The entrance to the store is set at an angle, with a sticker showing the original sign "Comics & Games". A little more novel is the brick-built mascot that's found over the front door. This continues the trend of several Heartlake businesses this year having walkable mascots! The mascot looks very friendly indeed, but if there was any doubt, a speech bubble is close by with a friendly "Hello!".
The ground floor windows shows an impressive array of the store's merchandise, with various headgear and some adorable plushies. Larger stickers adorn the upper floor windows, leaving no doubt as to the nature of the building's business.
Next door to the shop is a slushie store, which seems like pretty perfect business positioning to me. A large brick-built slushie is found on top of the door, in case there is any doubt as to what's sold inside.
A vending machine is also located in the front - selling what the set description calls "cards". It's nice that this is a working vending machine - twist the lever in the front and one of the cards will drop down (they can be replenished through a slot at the top). As seen in this picture, the vending machine can be detached.
The rear view of the store shows that there are plenty of details that weren't obvious from the front. I'm very happy that this set also has steps leading from the ground floor upstairs.
On the ground floor, there are plenty of items on the display shelves. Not only are there headgear pieces and plushies on the top shelf, but various figurines and a game controller can be found on the bottom shelf. A carton filled with comic books is next to the check-out stand. Several stickers are put to good use here.
Thanks to another sticker, there's a "Kapow!" sign on the floor. Various cosplay weapons are featured overhead, as well as a shield with a unicorn icon. This is a printed piece, which is nice to see.
Upstairs is a gaming room with a multi-player game in progress with two stations, a video arcade-style type game, and an assortment of other wares on display in the corner. Many of these details are provided by stickers applied to the inside of arched pieces. I can now say that this kind of sticker application is officially my least favourite!
I love the use of phone pieces for seat backs in this room. Other nice details in this room include a piece of bubblegum under the table, and crushed soda cans in the recycle bin.
Next door, on the top floor of the slushie shop, there's a table with a couple chairs (and slushies) for the Friends to enjoy the fresh air (or perhaps commiserate while their lives are being recharged from their favourite game).
Downstairs, the slushie store has a great variety of flavoured ices available for self-serve. There's also a walk up window for those Friends on the go (likely those in hurry to get to those gaming stations upstairs).
While the Friends are busy with video games, others take some time to enjoy some iced treats.
(Note: slushie-drinking sloths not included in this set)
Overall thoughts
This is such a fun set! I've said this before, but I love how the Friends design team continues to find fresh new ideas to bring to the Heartlake City retail scene.
The colours of this building are.....a LOT. It gives me 41708 Roller Disco Arcade vibes. The bright green, very very very bright yellow and bright blue of the comic shop paired with the orange and pink shades from the slushie store - considering the businesses, the colours work. If it was any other combination of businesses it would definitely be out of place, but it's a good example of the design team matching the right colours to the set.
The comic book shop is appropriately detailed - while heavily reliant on stickers, I do like that there are a number of comic books available (each Friend comes with one), and there are all kinds of interesting items for sale in the shop. There are so many details packed in here. The alien and the unicorn plushies are adorable! The slushie store integration is pretty seamless and I always enjoy when there are actually stairs from one level to another.
The costumes for the minidolls are undoubtedly a strong draw for this set. The costumes are lovely and it's great to see the Friends in this setting.
I don't think the price is too bad for this set either, especially considering the costumed mindolls and all the details in the set.

The sticker sheet is gigantic! In my experience comic book shops look more like densely-packed book stores, crammed with shelves. This set has...one crate of comics?
I'm not minding the colours of the buildings so much. They seem a lot less garish than some of the Friends sets and seem reasonably appropriate for the type of shops represented. This wouldn't look too out of place in a typical city display.
Those comics definitely shouldn't be in a box on the floor. They should be on display shelves, pristinely sealed behind mylar bags and the occasional graded clamshell for rare incentive covers.
I have not kept up, but is that space helmet a new/desired color, or just reused from the vending machine?
Such a fun set! I love the gaming computers with their translucent bricks. Lots of cool pets too, like the blue masonry bricks and that new shield.
Like most comic shops today sadly more toys and merch than actual comics.
Thanks, Megan! Will try to get my game addicted 13 y.o. to take a look at this set. I’m also loving the walking mascots that have come with recent Friends sets and think that’s what’s going to push me to also get this one —if I find a decent discount. Those sloths are still livin the life!
Oh yeah, I guess that shield is not a sticker.
Well done set, but not for me since I am not into arcades, comics, slushies, or Friends.

Kind of reminds me of 10270 where there was actually only 1 book found in the bookshop. At least there is more than 1 comic....albeit 2.
Delightful set! I love some of the Easter eggs referencing the box art from past LEGO themes like Space Police, Elves, and Heroica! There are also a lot of references to other motifs from the Friends theme — for example, the dog-patterned rug in the arcade matches a top that Nova's worn in a lot of this year's sets. I wonder if it's based on a game she designed, or just one she's a fan of?
The "feed Churro" game is very cute as well. Can anybody recognize whether the player in the corner who's livestreaming it is a character we've met in previous Friends sets? They don't immediately ring a bell for me, but it's the sort of detail where I'd expect the graphic designer to include a reference like that.
The costumes are also fantastic, referencing a wide range of archetypes/genres, and nicely complementing the ones from 42661. I'm pleasantly surprised by details like the mechanical heart print on Zac's shirt underneath his robot costume's chestplate, and the impressive back printing on all four torsos. Aliya's pegasus shield is also a fantastic new print and recolor of Link's shield from the Legend of Zelda Great Deku Tree set. I love how much use that mold's been getting this year!
The working gachapon/capsule toy machine is a super clever and impressively compact mechanical feature that definitely suits this sort of pop-culture-heavy setting. The plushies also look cute, and make good use of the versatile new unicorn horn and antenna molds for animals and headgear. I love that the alien matches the aesthetics of the aliens in last year's City and Friends space sets, and has a whole comic series about it (four issues appear here, and a fifth appears in 42642)!
The shops themselves are nicely constructed, with unique, flashy color schemes and architectural motifs to suit their wares, and a well-organized floor plan (including an actual staircase, something a lot of Friends shops and even houses would often omit). I imagine some buyers might prefer if the slush ice parlor and the comic and game store were separate sets so that they could pick and choose between a couple lower-priced options instead of one big, expensive set, but they work pretty nicely in tandem, IMO.
It's great that the Friends theme's designers continue to come up with new and interesting sorts of shops and subject matter to fill out Heartlake City and the lives of its inhabitants. Hopefully that trend will continue in the future! Thanks again for another great review!

There are eight different comics in this set altogether — the review shows four in the crate and one held by each character in the final photo! They cover a variety of genres, which you can see a little more clearly in the photo of the sticker sheet.
Perhaps the comics selection would look a little more impressive if they were displayed on a tall, wide shelf instead of in a crate, but that would've taken up quite a bit more space (and completely blocked the view through the front window), so I get why the designers opted for this more compact approach and used the window shelves for some of their pricier wares like toys, games, and costumes.
I do appreciate this trend of working vending machines in Lego sets.
This is a great set - if it would not be for the 'garish/unrealistic' colours (I know, i'm not the intended market) it would be perfect. That said, with minor modifications, this could easily be integrated in a 'city' plan. Good review as always. These sloths are really seeing the world!
More importantly, there is a teal space helmet in there - which means, those will most likely be available on PaB. There are two desirable spacemen in a recent set but it is never quite sure with Lego if these (i.e. all the required parts) will be available on PaB. Fingers crossed. (buying the set gives you two of each of those but what if you want 10 of each? - army/squadron building is not as easy as in Star Wars).
It bugs me SO MUCH that Nova's outfit has exposed skin, it makes it pretty much impossible to mix and match the costumes. Not to mention exposed skin is probably a really bad idea if you're an astronaut...
I love the garish colors as will my kids! This will absolutely become 41708 's neighbor on that side of our town.
It is definitely more of a gaming and collectables shop but delightful nonetheless. The angled construction is really neat too. I wouldn't have guessed the stairs actually tie it together so well in the back and that is an interesting build feature.
This game is not sold in retail stores in Spain. Not even at Toys 'R' Us or El Corte Inglés. Is it exclusive to Lego or is it omitted in Spain?
I like this set, I just wish it were GRANDER with more STUFF on the inside. The best comic stores are full of endless STUFF.
I think this is my latent desire for a Modular Arcade and a Modular Comic Shop talking.

I believe this is a Lego exclusive, yes. I haven't seen it anywhere else myself and it's being quite heavily advertised at the two Lego stores I've been to recently.

Cards indeed... I know Pogs when I see them!
What a great set, though, so much to love. @Mister_Jonny I agree, these minifig-scale working vending machines are great. "A nice bottle of Spider Soda" is still a running gag in our house thanks to the one in 80020.
I have this. Love the colours. The little vending machine is brilliant.
I love how Friends keeps finding new stuff agianand again. I f only City showed this innovation!
Nevertheless, I still want buildings to have proper roofs so you can display them. A handful of plates, atteched to a few studs, no big deal...

They leave them open so it's easier for kids to play within the space.
It's easy to roof them up...just moc some roofs. Use pieces from your parts collection.

I didn't even think about skin colors, but I definitely thought that a spacesuit that exposes skin is a bad idea.
I'm surprised this review brushed over a lot of the smaller details, this set is incredibly dense with its references and accessories. Outside the cosplay costumes, there's extra accessories for them to swap between on the window shelf. Inside there's also a LOT of stickered references: packaged sets of 5974 and 41178 , a Brain sucker from Alien Conquest on the arcade cabinet vs the CMF clockwork robot, and even a copy of Heroica on the curved shelf sticker!
This set's one that will probably my next big purchase, it's full of great details that are ripe for reuse in a moc (people hate stickers, but I think many can be very useful). 40805 would probably make a good companion piece with its stickers and parts, especially the boxed game consoles and Junkbot cab.

There's actually 8 comics, two of which are meant to be manga! Four of the comics appear to be a series about an alien invasion starring the alien plush that was later adapted into a film (as seen in 42642 which also includes issue 5 of the series).
Still not a full-store's worth of comics but it's at least a shelf's worth... the bigger issue is figuring out how to keep them on the shelf lol.
I'm shocked to say this...
but it might be the first set to get just for the sticker sheet itself! lol
I may get this set & convert it into a Ninjago Modular.
On one hand, it looks amazing and could easily be a city set. On the other hand that sticker sheet is nauseating...
Utterly charming set.

Not a typical Lego city though. Lego seem to think that a city needs a thousand police and fire stations, and very little else.

They're willing to allow hospitals as well.
If only the Teal coloured space helment is Light Blue, and the Light Grey knight helment is of the space helment mould, then everything will be complete.
If only this was a City set with regular minifigures...
Do boys really only want police, fire fighters and vehicles all the time? There are literally only 2 "buildings" in this year's line-up in a theme that is called CITY and even Creator is just giant animals and deco objects. Meanwhile Friends is on fire with apartments, stores, ranches, rooms packed full of detail and new parts. Is LEGO really this blind and doesn't notice this discrepancy? It's as if all the good Designers went to Friends, while City just tries to be Speed Champions 2.0 and Creator the new Icons subtheme.
I only just realized that Friends boxes are normal rectangles now, like other LEGO sets. When did that change and how did I not notice?

Google doesn’t help and we threw out all our boxes. I guess I’ll have to rely on the community. :o)
Looks like a solid set to pick up on sale and turn into a floor or two of a modular city, albeit with a Bricklink order to add enough side walls and ceilings.

I believe it was with the reboot with the new generation of characters in 2023.
Sure, I just saw my boxes. I thought it had been longer.

Judging from the sticker I'd rather say you can buy capsule toys from the vending machine.

City is marketed to 5-7 years olds. Kids 7+ jump on ninjago or technic.
Also there is tons of boys that buy friends.
I'd love to mod the "games" from digital to tabletop. Change that console controller sign to a giant meeple, turn the upstairs over to a TTRPG table.
I’m not one to get a Friends set normally… but I manage a comic book shop, so I rather want this.
