LEGO 40769 SEGA Genesis Controller revealed!
Posted by CapnRex101,
72046 Game Boy has been exceptionally well-received and another classic video gaming item will soon be released as well.
40769 SEGA Genesis Controller contains 260 pieces and will be available from September 8th, seemingly as a gift-with-purchase. We have no information about the spend threshold at the moment, but hope to receive that soon and will update this article then.
View more images after the break, revealing a fun surprise inside the controller...
Build a gaming decor icon with this LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog SEGA Genesis Controller (40769) set. Embrace your video gaming passion with a retro gaming controller that has a microscale Green Hill Zone scene on the back and can be displayed two ways. The set also includes regional stickers for customisation and more.

I’d like the full console to go with my original Genesis…
I may not be patriotic about many things nowadays, but I *will* protect the correct and true name of Mega Drive until my dying breath - none of this Genesis gubbins, heathens!! Begone from thou sight!!
...that aside, yeah, looks really nicely done! The lil diorama inside's a lovely touch too - hopefully we get a price threshold for it soonish, def need to plan out a store trip for it methinks
It's a shame they didn't go for the full Genesis / Mega Drive setup as an 18+ set. I know the Sega CD or 32X weren't financially successful, but having the Genesis / Mega Drive with its add-ons would arguably be as iconic as the NES set.
Though of course there's the issue of *which* model of the console to make since there's multiple iterations.
Cute GWP, but money's been really tight for me the last few months so I haven't been able to make any new purchases.

We only have the tiny images on the back of the box at the moment, but the set does include alternative stickers for both names!
Ah crap, I ordered two HP sets to get the HP GWP 40770 a little after midnight on the 1st of Sept. The next morning, I saw that Diagon Alley 75978 was 20% off, so I ordered that as well (and got a double of the GWP). Now, there is this one coming in just a week... I have plenty of sets on the wish-list but unfortunately I do not have infinite money - and the last day was some serious Lego spending for me. Let's hope the threshold is not too bad.
Nope.
I wonder if this will be available with all purchases or be limited to certain themes like Sonic? If it's all purchases I'll be happy to go for it (even though I was never a Sega kid growing up), since it's quite cute and I still have several Ninjago, Mario, Dreamzzz, and Animal Crossing sets on my wishlist.
The proportions are a bit off, but I otherwise like it.
I also appreciate they include a sticker without the "Genesis" moniker. 'cause to everyone who isn't American, this is a Mega Drive controller.
The "Mega Drive Control Pad" text on the sticker, though, will need to be cut and placed higher up. On the real controller it was higher above the SEGA logo.
I just hope this isn't tied to a high threshold or, even worse, purchased of a specific theme.
Well having owned a Mega Drive (I'm pleased to hear LEGO have had the foresight to include that name as well, even if it is a sticker), I'm just wondering which humungous set I'm going to have to buy to get one...
This was the first console my family had when I was a tiny human and I adored it. We even had Sonic, so unlike every time Nintendo comes up in a non-exclusively-Pokemon-themed-context I shan’t be blinking in mild disinterest at the enthusiasm for the popular games. Absolute must have.
(I hope people do some alt builds for the scene on the back. I loved Sonic & Sonic 2, but I was also pretty darn fond of James Pond, Ecco the Dolphin, Lion King, Talmit’s Adventure, Castle of Illusion… It would be neat to see takes on some of them.)
It's not really surprising that they'd include stickers and parts to put them on for regional versions, as 21345 did the same thing. Anyway, this looks cool, but I have no real interest in it, as I've never played a Sega system in my life. I do like the Sonic vignette, though.

I believe it is all themes.
For everyone wondering, the US threshold is $130

The Mega Drive has a bluish start button, though.
Looks good. Will definitely get this but I haven't decided yet if it'll be with the Black Pearl or something much cheaper.
This is actually peak. Not as good as the Gameboy though.
All I really remember about the Genesis is a velociraptor head popping on the screen and yelling, "SEGA!"
Genesis does what Nintendon't!

I’m fairly sure mine had a red button, and they were definitely Mega Drive controllers not Genesis. I don’t think they were particularly consistent with how anything looked.
Cool looking, but interested....
But if somehow, in some way, God blessed us with an OG Xbox controller, I would be interested.
These game sets are only really set for people who are into those old game systems... Would be nice if they could somehow branch out to other corners of the world in consoles....
All the chatter of an easter egg "inside" but that Sonic scene IS the backside (and the product blurb says "back" too; plus how the stand is constructed). Can't find any indication that it gets covered up, but maybe that's just missing images they're not featuring for some reason.
Which feels a tad...odd? Curious on the trade-off between parts budget on making that diorama and all the necessary coloring for it versus finishing it with a smoother/realistic back. No one will be handling this in the same way as 72046, but it's still a controller so it kinda begs to be, you know, picked up and handled.
Ridiculous. We did not have 16:9 screens back then..

I don't even dare thinking about what the purchase threshold would be for that.
Where's the LEGO representation of my Commodore 64 with tape loader...?
I really don't see the point of the game controllers.
Amiga 500 Plus or Amiga 1200 next please. Plus SEGA Game Gear.
So are we all assuming this is a prelude to a Genesis and would perhaps be a second controller for it? I'm in for a Genesis, but I'd have to draw the line after that. Unless they did a SNES. Or a TG-16. And maybe an N64. And GameGear, GBA, DS... but -then- I'd absolutely draw the line.
Can't say I have much nostalgia for this, never had one myself, never knew anyone who did, and only played with it at the toy store back in the days. But I do like the idea of not just a controller (which would have been rather boring), but also that Sonic scene in the back!
Too bad it's just another GWP...
And branding is a bit weird, I mean, sure, I know the US is Lego's biggest market. But I highly doubt it is bigger than all the other (Mega Drive) markets combined. So would have made more sense to either market it with the most common name....

Like the sneaker shoes, Nintendo consoles, etc.
I do know why: to milk the adult target market, but why in the sense of being a toy, of being an educational tool, of being a creative and fun timesink? And no, this is not creative, this is build your merchandise."
If they really wanted to milk that specific audience, they would have made it regularly available instead of making it pretty hard to get.
I would probably buy it if it was like 20 bucks or so.....but no way I'm gonna spend big money at the Lego store for already massively overpriced stuff at RRP.....
Even Batman say na na Na na nana. Nope

Plenty of people treat lego sets as 3d puzzles. The process of building is a mild challenge with the reward of having at the end a build that resembles closely real life object. What's the point of assembling 1000 piece picture puzzle when you can have the same photo printed? That's exactly the same situation, just in 3d and the pieces are more varied.

Compared to Lego, the instructions for puzzles are sorely lacking.....

You use them to play video games.
Strangely, that 1x1 round tile of Sonic seems to be more based on his Advance rolling sprite than his Genesis one...
Definitely feels like a missed opportunity to not make a Tower of Power set (though as discussed, the choice of going for Model 1 Gen/CDs or Model 2 ones would be up in the air) but maybe if they did that, they'd use the six-button controller...?
The build seems lacking after the Atari 2600/VCS's stick and the Game Boy's tactile buttons; this looks like it'll be a static slab like the NES controller. Disappointing, but it's nice memorabilia and has more appeal as a limited set than the Insiders Crabmeat. The rumored price threshold is rough, though... I plan on picking up some Spider-Verse CMFs soon, but I'd probably be buying only six specific ones, and that wouldn't scratch very deep into the total. I'm waiting for retailer discounts on the most recent Star Wars wave, so I'm not going to lump any of those in.
I fought on the side of Nintendo in the First Console Wars, I still have the scars to prove it. Those square controllers were sharp enough to carve flesh.
I still really liked playing Sonic on my friends' Meganesis Segadrives, though. This is why I can appreciate this controller. I also really hated playing Street Fighter II on these gamepads, because what kind of dangerous reprobate settles for three buttons in a six-button fighting-game?
This looks fine. I don't think I'll hold off any purchases in a desperate bid to claim this GWP, but it's fine, it looks fine. We've had worse.
As an American, I don’t know what a Megadrive is.
As a Nintendoan, I don’t know what a Genesis is.
I want a 48K ZX Spectrum model! It was my very first computer bought back in 1984/85. Originally eyeing the ZX81 and started saving my pocket money, but 2 years later saved enough to get the ZX Spectrum.
I never liked the Genesis d-pad. It always just felt extremely imprecise and clunky. But I did have a lot of good times playing on my buddy’s Genesis. E-SWAT, Thunder Force III, Phantasy Star II, and of course the Sonic games.
I always thought the Mega Drive moniker sounded cooler. I don’t know why the U.S. SEGA marketing team went with “Genesis.” It wasn’t even the start as I knew one kid that had a Master System before that. So the name never even made any sense.

Was just thinking about the light pen peripheral we had for our ZX Spectrum 48K.

Now I'm thinking about the Futurama episode "Anthology of Interest II," with the aliens from "Nintendu 64." who invaded Earth because they wanted "QUARTERS! A MILLION ALLOWANCES WORTH OF QUARTERS! NO SLOTS OR TOKENS!"

I don't know. Why buy a LEGO X-Wing when you can buy a Hasbro version with lights and sounds? Why buy a LEGO car when you can buy a premade RC car? Why buy a LEGO house when you can buy a dollhouse? Why buy a painting when you can draw a picture? Why buy a book when you can read a parking ticket? Why buy shoes when you can walk in bare feet? Why buy food when you can eat grass and insects?
...I think I got a little off-track, but the point is that the question is asinine. You buy something built out of LEGO because you want to build it out of LEGO. That's the fun of it. That's the enjoyment.
I've never heard of this Mega Drive business. I had a Sega Genesis when I was a child. That is the only name.

Please clarify, is that my parking ticket, or someone else's? Because I would much rather buy an interesting book than read my own parking ticket, but if I got to pick who that ticket was, um, "awarded" to, then that's a different story altogether. I might need to flip a coin for that one, depending on the size and severity of the ticket.

Mine has (I still have it) a grey Start button, like the set.
I did a quick Google search and it seems the red button was on the controller of the Mega Drive II. And the blue button was on the Japanese version of the controller.

Had the lightpen, speech synthesiser add-on and also the highly unreliable microdrive storage. Sold the whole lot one year later to get the Amstrad CPC 464.

My parents got a little excitable about decluttering at one point, unfortunately for me, but I’m pretty sure ours was a II, yep. (A recent discovery as prior to some idle duckduckgoing after this set was announced I was unaware there were variations, on account of being quite small at the time.) Decidedly less broad than the OG.
