LEGO Speed Champions 77255 Lightning McQueen revealed!
Posted by TheBrickPal,
An unusual 2026 Speed Champions set has just been unveiled by LEGO!
Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Pixar's Cars, 77255 Lightning McQueen will be released on January 1st, costing £22.99, $27.99 or €27.99. The set is available for pre-order now.
This 270-piece rendition of the Radiator Springs racer certainly looks good to me, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments, and view more images after the break...

The stickers are biblically accurate. Love that they built the mouth.
Unexpected, but cool! I’m glad we’re finally getting another licensed Speed Champions set outside of the Fast & Furious franchise.

One of the leakers that first spilled the news on this set has also said we're getting a DeLorean.
As a Speed Champions collector, I will certainly be purchasing this! (And the DeLorean if it actually happens)
I mean, screw it. This is as good a choice as any for the theme.
I absolutely HATED CARS when I saw it in the theater (20 years ago! LMAOOO) so this is an EASY pass for me, but I mean whatever it's a fine inclusion for the line regardless of how I feel about the films.
It looks good, very charming. I notice it's a buck more expensive than the last Speed Champs sets and with fewer pieces, though.

Disney tax!
I think the bonnet looks a little broken up and not quite curvy enough, but it looks so very nice otherwise. It almost feels weird after all those highly specialised Cars they made all those years ago.
A speed champions I might actually buy

There's no way it's ever happening but I'd love to see Mr. Wolf's car from The Bad Guys
Love it!!!
I had no idea about this, so it’s a complete surprise to me…… Made me smile straight away.
Looks great
Maybe they should've brick built the eyes? I wonder how bad this set would look without the stickers, likely almost unrecognizable. The price increase for 2026 is also disappointing.
Oh dear, all stickers, and stickers for the eyes meaning that once the stickers crack and go in a few years you won't have much left.

What's not to like about the Cars movies?
Unpopular opinion, but I don't like it at all. The roof is way too square, the mouth is giving me nightmares, and without all the gazillion stickers you'd have no idea what car it is. The side window stickers are specially awful...
Definitely not a set for me, and I'm both a Pixar and Speed champions fan :-/
Oh well. Somebody said DeLorean? Yes please!
Very cool! Did not see this coming at all. I don’t have any of the old Cars sets; this might be my first one!
Kachow!
DeLorean - Yes Please! my original one looks quite outdated next to the new speed champion film cars.
Still need K.I.T.T. and the A Team Van though.
A new Mystery Machine would also be nice, since I missed out the first time
Odd choice to make since the demand for anything Cars related died out some time ago... That said, its pretty damn accurate in build and style. Just a shame they've gone with so many stickers.
As a huge Speed Champions fan I was a little unsure at first but it looks amazing
Given the lack of minifigure and I doubt there is an interior I think a reduction in the price by a few quid or the inclusion of a few accessories would have been in order.
The first present I ever gave my wife, back in high school, was a little die-cast Lightning McQueen. I don't remember what brand it was. She still has it sealed on a shelf by her computer desk! This is a day-one buy for sure, two copies! One for me, one for her. I hope it gets released early so I can buy it for Christmas :)
Lot of people don't know this but Cars is a total rip off of Doc Hollywood from 1991 staring Michael J. Fox (Lightning), Woody Harrelson (Mater), Julie Warner (Sally), etc.
Wrong theme!. More like Duplo than Speed Champions. Could this be the first ever Speed Champ I don't get?.... Of course not!
(So long as the path to Wacky Races is now clear!)

My answer to that question (IMO) is so simple I can say it in two words: 'Cars 2'. If you need more words, here's two more: 'Spy Mater'.
I'm not gonna buy this set.
Doesn't feel like a Speed Champion to me. Prefer it if they stuck to actual real world cars. Even the other movie based SC cars are real.
Might be the first SC I don’t buy
I mean, it looks fine? But I never got around to watching Cars and three quarters of the reasons I don’t get Speed Champions is I don’t do my own stickers and it feels unreasonable to dump a large number on someone else for a fairly small kit, and that sure does look like a lot of stickers. I guess more regular Speed Champions fans are used to it and accept it as the price of entry, though, and it’s a good enough fit for the line, if just a touch off the beaten path with no minifig driver and no exact real world equivalent.

its not a disney tax they just are upping the prices bc the demand is there. Only thing to do is to not buy until sales
So much for Speed Champions using clever building techniques and switching from stickers towards brick-built features like lights. Even the windshield is stickered on this! Good luck matching the curved slope prints with the rest of the sticker color. This is objectively the absolute worst SC model in the 8 stud era. Why would they release this model in a series that only included real licensed cars until now? First SC I won't buy because of this and I have them all. :(

race cars don't need headlights because the track is always lit
"Oh. my. god."
Was my initial reaction. Followed by uncontrollable chuckling to myself. I'm not really a fan of Cars, but I kinda want this?
The Cars movie is one of my favorite movies, so I'll most likely get this.
I also can't believe Cars 20 years old!
Wait, we're into the 2026 reveals already? How on earth did that happen??

No one is forcing you to. Incidentally, I'm not going to buy this set either. While I really enjoyed the movies (all of them), I simply don't need a LEGO Cars set.
I'm just here to see what Star Wars vehicle Jake Sadovich is going to make this guy into!

Still so much better than 8484
Would prefer 2 pack with Mater but this will be a buy once on 20%/+ off as all SC sets are for me these days. No reason to ever buy these at full price. But should be a fun build with a bit more personality. No figs makes sense but is a departure from other SC sets.
Can't tell.if it can actually fit a fig or whether the cab is full of car brain

That's easily the widest 4-wide Lego car ever.....
I get what they were going for and I think the attempt is succesful, but it certainly isn't a set for me. Those stickers alone....and apparently yet another price increase for Speed Champions?

Ha, what a great idea and makes perfect sense! SC was getting a bit stale for me, I only have two of the current batch on my wish list, but this will make it three.
@bnic99 I am completely in if they give us an SC A-Team van and KITT.

I mean, A Bug's Life is just The Three Amigos (and so is Galaxy Quest).
My childhood! This and the DeLorean will probably be the first Speed Champions sets I actually buy!
Way better reveal and announcement than the UCS Death Star
Even the eyes are stickers. Weren’t integral “character” elements either prints or brick-built until recently?

Doc Brown's new face has already leaked, and we know both Marty and him will be in the set.
Arrrggghhh - stickers.
Arrrggghhh - price.
First day purchase. Love it.
But why?
To anyone who is complaining about stickers:
I gave 60267 Safari Off-Roader to my cousin's 6-year-old that year. He asked me to put the sticker on the hood/bonnet, but did the rest himself. They looked... well, like a 6-year-old applied then. But he was happy.
That kid was more mature than you lot.

What, since the Death Star yesterday?
*This thing.
"That'll be 28 euro"
I have to admit, this vehicle of all things now being a thing in the Speed Champions theme is kind of funny.
"I am speed"
I think it looks pretty good. The stickers are accurate to the source material, even the headlights, like the F1 sets.
And, I mean, Lightning McQueen IS Speed, and he's a champion (at least in the first movie...), so this is probably the first Speed Champions set that literally fits the theme exactly.
Now, a DeLorean, on the other hand? Not so much. That is neither speed nor a champion. The fastest a DeLorean has ever gone is 88 mph, and that one was a film prop....
Edit: my brother pointed out, this set should've come with an Owen Wilson minifig as the driver. Missed opportunity for a real "Wow!" set there....

The side windows are printed/brick-built, not stickers. Same with the slopes above the rear wheels, the rear wheel arches, and the 1x1 plates just in front of the arches. The eyes are stickers, though, yes. Probably to make them stand out more, since we all know the car would have pink-eye if they were printed.
Not sure if it'd be unrecognizable without the decorations. On the one hand, it is a somewhat amorphously-shaped car in general, unlike the hyper-specific replicas of the 8-wide SC age. On the other hand, it is still bright red, and the shape being deliberately and completely different from any real-world sportscars/supercars may make it quite distinguishable, especially to non-car people.

Watch Cars! It's genuinely a good movie with real heart to it.
Lego seems to be getting all over the place with their pre-releases. Almost 4 months in advance for this, yet no official announcement for the likes of the Winter Village which is presumably due in 4 weeks. I wish they were a bit more consistent!
Buying 35 of these instead of the Death Star. Voting with my wallet.
I'm just glad this expensive stickersheet comes packed with some useful bricks.

Also, I think this isn't so much trying to capture the original Lightning McQueen, but is more like an upscaled version of the much smaller Lego version from earlier sets. This seems particulalrly obvious looking at how the rear of the car is shaped.
I really hope we get a Fabulous Hudson Hornet 'Doc Hudson'. Very famous for racing history and also CARS.
You'd be surprised how many people, now grown up, love Doc Hudson and as such Paul Newman who sadly passed away not too long after voicing the character.
Not sure how I feel about the brick built mouth. I would have liked to have seen the ability to turn this into a regular car in addition to Lightning McQueen himself.
Seems like an odd choice for Speed Champions. I'm much more interested in absolutely anything else they'll announce for the line.

I was actually contemplating building that. TBG2 is the third film where I’ve been able to to spot the name of one of my college friends listed in the credits, after Ruby Gillman, then Kung Fu Panda 4, and most recently catching a rerelease of The Wild Robot.
@Lvl:
I brickbuilt the eyes on mine. Took a full month to figure out the solution (I started with Todd, so I had the basic design figured out from my TS1 Pizza Planet truck). Funny thing is, in a 6-wide world, I had to redesign Lightning, and design Holley Shiftwell to be 8-wide because their official die-casts were visibly wider. So, first SC where 8-wide is the right choice.

Cars 3.
I’m totally into Speed Champions branching off into fun and different areas. This is great.
LMcQ's front bumper just looks a little too square to me. Argh! so close to an A tier, but might be a B tier set...
I like it and would definitely be interested in buying it if I can score it at the right price.
While I love that we're getting more licensed Speed Champs cars that aren't The Fast and the Furious, if I get this, it'll be as a present for my third nephew. Now, the BttF one, I'll definitely be picking up, especially since I didn't get 21103.

Yeah, that one has almost completely erased itself from my memory. I know there was a school bus (I mainly remember that one because of the sets) and I think there was a demolition derby?
@BLProductions said:

Except the eyes/windshield. And it was really more about the headlights specifically being stickers. It’s never made clear if the sponsor logos were stickers or painted. For mine, I used drum-lacquered slopes for the headlights, a printed Rusteeze tile on the bumper, and brickbuilt the Corvette paint job. Saved having to figure out the sponsorships or the spoiler.

Looks great! I love that they are branching out and it fits very well. As others have said, the stickers concern me, but the shaping looks really good! I'm looking forward to seeing more cars from Cars as well as other licenses. Also quite the coincidence that my region has been hit with the worst thunderstorms and lightning in months today.
I get that it's a race car (and a Champion) but I'm not totally convinced that this set belongs to Speed Champions theme. This is easy cash, so I think that's the primary reason ( more like 99% and why not?). Then again I don't do 8 stud SC, so who cares...

That was my first thought too. Well, maybe not Duplo, but this doesn't belong in SpeedChampions at all in my opinion.
They changed SC to 8 wide so that they could make more recognizable and realistic renditions of real cars. This isn't even a car, it's an animated character. I'm not saying this set shouldn't be made, it's delightful! But it shouldn't be in SC.
Most of all, I would hate it if SC starts nudging its direction away from realism to make room for more of this. The right thing to do, I think, would be to start a new and parallel line with 6-wide vehicles again. More playful and cartoony in style, but still with the detail and build techniques. Perhaps a junior Speed Champions if you will. This set should have been perfect in there.
This is a big surprise. Wow. It actually is really very good. It looks great, I just don't know if it will have fantastic building techniques the SC line is known to have.

Stickers of stickers on a character nicknamed 'Stickers.' That's not obsessive, it's perverse!!
As for stickers.....I don't like them (neither applying them nor how they look), but usually I can get over them. Even on Speed Champions cars, although so far I picked sets that weren't sticker heavy. But then recently I got the RB20.....and despite it being a nice build, I absolutely hated it. So many stickers, including lots of tiny ones that need to be applied particularly carefully to align with other stickers. I don't think I've ever taken so long (about three weeks!) to finish a 250 piece set. Never again! If only CaDa would do more F1 cars.....
I honestly feel sorry for reviewers who had to build all 10 of the F1 SC sets...they must be scarred for life!
After the tsunami of F1 cars I decided I didn't need all of the 8-wides. This is another I don't need. Fine for people who like it, but I don't need Lightning McQueen, especially as a Speed Champions set. Maaaybe for really cheap and to figure out how to get rid of the mouth and eyes.
And what's up with the price hike? This doesn't even have a minifig. Weren't those adding at least 5,- to a set?
I'd love a set based on the car from The Bad Guys, complete with a Mr. Wolf minifig.
Well, hey, I can dream.

Well, I personally really liked it. I know other people didn’t, but I think I liked it as much as the first. Maybe too much nostalgia for me, but I thought it was a solid movie, I really did.

However, I often still wonder why, almost 20 years later, why Walmart still sells Cars diecast (and they don't sell well at all here... Those I have (yes, even I have a few) are those either based on, or voiced by NASCAR greats--i.e The King.

Almost as many stickers, and less flawed minifigs, all for a fraction of the price! What's not to like!

It's been a moment since a BS comment has made me do a spit take. Thank you, sir! I needed that.
Now, I'm off to get a new shirt.
You're welcome! And sorry about your shirt ;-)

"Are we really getting to the point where people actually look on Cars 2, the movie that ruined PIXAR's reputation, as a good film? I watched all 3 for the first time as an adult, and while I don't consider any of them as truly great, the 3rd was leagues ahead of the 2nd, but there had to be a chapter 2 for it to work as a story"
Cars 2 got a bad rap because it wasn't the film people expected it to be, but that doesn't mean it was a bad film. People went in expecting it to be Cars 1 But Bigger, and reacted to it strictly in that context, in the same way that many people immediately wrote off Lightyear because it was clear that it was going to stray pretty far from being Yet Another Toy Story Movie. And some people just hated Cars 2 because they wished there was less Mater in the first film, not more.
Cars 3 fails because it tried to present an already controversial socio-political statement, and just bungled the whole thing, even going so far as to both undermine and directly contradict its core message. The Good Dinosaur is just a mediocre movie, but Cars 3 is the only Pixar feature that's a flat out bad one.
@cody6268:
I don't. For one thing, I know that the Cars franchise was, for years, up there with Disney Princess as the two most profitable IPs in the Disney stable. Marvel hadn't really taken off, Star Wars was still delightfully independent, and even Mickey Mouse wasn't their top seller. It was Princess dresses and Cars die-casts where Disney made bank. You have to understand that the die-casts only cost a few bucks each, so the vast majority of the Cars merch fell into the impulse purchase category, so parents could just keep buying them without having to worry about whether they'd be able to pay their bills afterwards. And kids still love the Cars franchise (Planes, not so much). I've personally done around 200 public displays, and hands down one of the biggest reactions I've ever seen is young boys spotting Lightning and Mater. Even people into their 30's frequently react to them, because it's something that may have been a formative part of their childhoods.
Cars 2 was my favorite of the three. It genuinely surprised me as being very funny, clever, and totally different than the first. I agree with what @PurpleDave said that Cars 2 is not what moviegoers expected. I liked the fact that it was a buddy movie, sports movie, and spy movie all in one. It is an Allinol, you could say. ;-)

I like all three. Cars is just an all-around great movie, and my personal favorite Pixar movie. I agree with you that even though Cars 2 is a very different movie from the first one, it's just a lot of fun and very entertaining. Cars 3 is definitely the weakest of the three, and I actually didn't enjoy it very much the first time I saw it, but now I appreciate it for what it is.

In the US, all the chain stores still have a small section devoted to Cars die-casts, mixed in with all the regular stuff like Hot Wheels and Matchbox.

Well, if it's that simple: TLG, bring back Monster Fighters. 31167 is a good start, but you're not done here.
Also, bring back trans-neon, cowards.

See here its the other way around that you'll find the odd one mixed in with the dedicated Hotwheels and Matchbox rather then a pure Cars section. At the minute its Mario Kart related stuff that seems to be getting its own dedicated block.

Pretty sure there's even a joke in the movie about his headlights being stickers.

Not exactly about that, but "Race cars don't need headlights because the track is always lit" is a quote from the movie, to which one of the guys he was on stage says, "Well so's my brother, but he still needs headlights!"

While we’re at it, I want Sand Red and Purple back. Nothing major… but now that y’all aren’t fighting bankruptcy… and making billion dollar profits… can we maybe have those two back?

I second the request for sand red and monster fighters!

In addition to what I pointed out earlier, if you go to the set's database page and look at the official description, it says, "The car toy is also the only Speed Champions model with a detailed undercarriage so kids can enjoy extra play value," which would almost certainly indicate interesting building techniques there. Presumably, the fact that it doesn't need an interior means that they don't need to use a chassis piece designed to accommodate minifigs, leaving them room for undercarriage detail. I found out about this by watching just2good's video on the set.
I am Speed.
I am Champion.
I am Lightning.

I wouldn't mind seeing Monster Fighters return or trans neon green. But I would far rather see trans neon orange return. The loss of that one still makes me sad, especially with the solid color equivalent, reddish orange.

Very interesting! I am intrigued. It makes sense because there's no interior. Perhaps there's a Piston Cup inside. Or ... maybe there's a Disney Cast Member or Owen Wilson minifig inisde driving.

Both translucent neons got solid equivalents recently! LEGO refusing to have them coexist is something I'll never forget. What a terrible move.
I want multiple copies!
One for me, one for my daughter, and I want the entire CARS lineup!
LEGO, please keep making these, make the entire lineup from the movie! And price them like this.

No you don’t. You may want all of the main characters, but there are just waaaaaaay too many background characters to buy this way. Even the die-casts probably haven’t gone through the entire list in 20 years, and they can dump several characters into each assortment. This format they’d probably be limited to one per year, maybe even every other year, or they could even have to trade off with other non-Cars IP for any movie car spots in the lineup. Based on previous runs, best we can really expect is Mater will follow, but even that will create a problem. Mater is only maybe 80% of the width of Lightning, based on the official die-casts that were designed using Pixar’s own CGI models. Holley is the only other character I’ve built that’s the same width, while most of the Radiator Springs residents would need to be 6-wide to look accurate, while characters like Sarge, Lizzie, Luigi, and Guido would need to be even narrower.

"Oh dear, all stickers, and stickers for the eyes meaning that once the stickers crack and go in a few years you won't have much left."
Came here to say this with regards to the eyes. The rest as stickers makes sense both logistically and canonically (as race cars have details applied this way as well) but the eyes are too large to make for a good sticker. Even if they kept it as a sticker and only did the white part, it would have been better than a 4x6 sticker.

You've been into Lego for far too long to expect consistent scale, you should know better than that!

That was the cold opening for Cars 2.
Awesome! Now give me a Speed Champions Doc Hudson!
Just realized the eyes are stickers . . . that is not good.
Really surprised they aren't a printed piece, especially since they were printed in 8484.

I'm still not sure if I'll get this one, but that I would definitely get, and only partially because of the character. That would be the oldest Speed Chaps car they've done in eight-wide, and I've been wanting them to do some real classics.
