Great Western Brick Show, Swindon, 11-12 October
Posted by Huw,
We are approaching a busy time of year for LEGO events in the UK, with one of the biggest and best, the Great Western Brick Show, taking place at the STEAM museum in Swindon on the 11th and 12th of October.
This year's show will be bigger than ever, with displays spread throughout the museum, plenty of hands-on activities, and a dozen or so traders in attendance, selling everything from individual minifigs to vintage 1960s and 1970s sets. Tickets are available from the official website.
Then, on the 1st and 2nd of November, the Shildon Brick Show takes place at the Locomotion museum in the town. Entry is free, but you need to book tickets in advance.
Two weeks after that, on the 15th and 16th November, the Bristol Brick Show will be held at the Gloucestershire county cricket ground.
I will be attending all three, collaborating in the Great Ball Contraption display, and I look forward to seeing some of you there. I may have some Brickset 1x8 bricks to give away, so be sure to come and say hello!

So, I am as always, justifiably disgusted by the Homemakers-figures. I would called them horrible, but that would mean passing up on a valuable opportunity to use the word 'abominable' instead.
I'm also morbidly curious though - did any Homemakers-figures actually have those printings? Because they're surprisingly good. The hats are the real deal, that much I know to be true. For all their many, many, many, many, many, many, many faults, the Homemakers sure did have some pretty cool hats.
Would appreciate some clips of the GBCs, always and at any time.

Those prints look to be too detailed for 1970’s. Just look at first couple years of minifigs, how simple their prints were, and actually how many were initially stickers
I would still love to see a more complete Lego event calendar....as I now usually find out about events only after they have happened :-(
Well, just a few more weeks and we'll have a small event here in the Netherlands: https://www.legoworld.nl/

This is probably the best you'll find: https://lan.lego.com/events/

This list is UK only, but an extremely comprehensive list can be found at Bricks McGee https://www.bricksmcgee.com/blog/lego-fan-events-in-the-uk-ireland-2025/

They don't list the one (massive) event I do know about......that doesn't bode wel. But I'll keep an eye on it, thanks!

That's because it's not run by a LUG, but by LEGO, and that list is maintained by LUG ambassadors.

Homemaker sets seem to have begun in 1971. Maxifigs, however, appeared in 1974 in homemaker sets and also in the aptly named 'Building Set with People'. Most regular face prints can be found in 200-1 . There is a 'male' hairpiece (brown, black) and a 'female' hairpiece (black, red), both are reversible and offer two different hair styles. There is also the 'grandma' hairpiece (grey). As for hats, there is the cap (white, black, red, blue) ex. 250-3 , the cowboy hat (grey, black) 210-1 , band with leaf (yellow) 215-1 (also the only set with red heads), airplane pilot and goggles hat (red) 213-1 , firemen hat (red) 218-1 and the top hat (black) 205-2 . Their last appearance was in 1980 (1 regular set, 1 supplementary set).
I was not able to find a maxifig with sideburns but 205-2 has two men with mustache.
Homemakers figures are a weird choice... nowadays almost nobody recognizes them, they look more of an off-brand than genuine Lego.
It's really nice to have a fantastic Lego event in my home town, used to go every year but more recently I find I am usually away when it is on, very frustrating!

But they do avoid the Lego legal department throwing a fit if minifigures were used instead

You say that, but I am old enough (mid-late forties) to have a maxifig in my collection, bought for me as a child, but have a young family who would love such an event - so bang on for me!
