LEGO 40921 Scaled-Up Blue Astronaut Minifigure revealed!
Posted by CapnRex101,Several LEGO up-scaled minifigures have been produced in recent years, although one of the most famous minifigures was conspicuously absent from the range, until now!
40921 Blue Scaled-Up Astronaut Minifigure will be released on March 1st and contains 793 pieces, costing £54.99, $59.99 or €59.99. As is often the case with these sets, there is a surprise to discover inside.

This is the best so far!!

Where's the cracked helmet alternative build?
With faded chest logo?
To state the obvious, wish it included an updated blue space minifig instead of that robot.
Well it's about time! On to the wish list you go, my big friend! And it even comes with a re-color of the bot from one of my favorite Space sets of all time, 6931!
Oh goody, someone to watch the baby.
so... Classic Spaceman is controlled by the robot! Haha, I get it, LEGO humour! But I'd much rather they include a re-release of the Blue spaceman - sorely missed! Also, is there a closer look of the airtanks form the back?

This all day! Just a non-Benny’d blue was a layup choice. I guess we know which set the “ Build, Paint and Play!” GWP is gonna be tied to.
I like a printed part as much as the next person, but everything would be kinda awesome if the Classic Space logo was a clear-back sticker. Imagine having them in all the colours! For once LEGO, give us a sticker!!!
I don't need studless builds but the ones on the shoulders are strange considering the others in the line didn't have that.
Cool! And most surprising to me is how much better this helmet looks than the one from 40819
Looks great! Since it's a blue astronaut the printed 1x6x5 panel for the chest will probably also be great for things like base or SHIP MOCs.
I was hoping this set would be easily recolored into other colors of astronaut, but sadly(?) it seems to introduce a new arch piece on the chin strap and between the domes on the helmets, a 1x4x2 1/3 arch that fills the gap in the system between the 1x3x1 2/3 arch and the 1x5x3 1/3 arch. An arch fitting between those is long overdue, but until it comes in colors like red, black, white, and yellow, it sadly limits the ease of recoloring this to other classic space colors.
Looking forward to seeing people try to incorporate this into their "Everyone Is Awesome" rainbow builds.
I'm interested to see when they extend this idea into licensed themes a bit more. I did hear that we will be getting a Darth Vader one.
You could replace the robot figure (the minifig scale one) with this brain piece: https://brickset.com/parts/6469669/mini-head-no-4217
or indeed this minifigure: https://brickset.com/sets/71046-2/Imposter
Love it- is a must buy for this Space loving guy!
Alright...this is cool.

I'm kinda surprised they've never done a Batman one yet! Though one of the limits of this type of fig is the slopes used for the sides of the body cut down on the most easily decorated surface space on the torso, which could maybe make some figs with a lot of torso detail a tougher proposition.
Where’s the poll?!
I was all ready to finally choose the Day One Purchase option.
Someone needs to tell that robot that its human disguise is a bit too big... Jokes aside, I am so looking forward to getting this. Spaceshi... I mean Spaceman!
SPACESHIP!!!
Spaceman! Spaceman! SPACEMAN!
I have no interest in Minifigures and not much in Classic Space, but this is smashing!
That big printed panel on the front is glorious.
The proportions of the helmet look a bit off? The forehead appears like it comes down lower than it should, almost as if they based the design on the motorcycle helmet instead of the classic helmet.
I like this build. I do think a regular blue Spaceman should have been included, but I wouldn't want to lose the robot, either.
For those asking for a Benny version, instead of the robot, it should have a tiny Spaceship in its brain...

They could always got the TLBM route and do a 3D utility belt instead of print.
Not day one - as I hardly ever do that (depending on GWP at the time if any) but I will get this. As mentioned by some people already (1) would have been significantly better with a spaceman (any colour other than white or orange) controlling the large spaceman, (2) those studs on the neck must go; I will need to see the instructions before ordering the proper parts to remove most of the studs while keeping the integrity of the shoulders intact. Why no pictures of the oxygen tank? This is a fairly important part defining this type of minifig. I'm glad they did the helmet right because 40819 does not look too good.
Ouch, the Pooh sets then this glorious set. The contrast is day and night
Bummed that the robot is controlling him but other that that I love it. I hope we ge a Castle one next.

I was thinking more about the muscle prints that are on most Batman suits (save for the Adam West one and a couple other cartoony versions). Those sorts of details might be hard to pull off.
Bit cheap that they want to cash in on Benny without actually paying to license him! Would rather have had, maybe, a red figure and a white one with the classic rocketpack. But I guess this will sell more.

They did Harry Potter and Hermione Granger a few years back 76393-1. IMO those sets should come with only one character per set.
The helmet can be fixed a little bit. Instead of the two plate 2x2 27 deg (24299 and 24307) which leave a gap, you can replace that with 2 angular plate 1,5 top 1x2 1/2 (a 1x2 bracket in simple terms - part 99781) and two roof tiles 1x2x 2/3 (a 1x2 cheese slope - part 5404).

Last I heard, LEGO had sold the rights of the film to Universal, but without any new film to support it, paying a license for a character they already own in a generic context doesn’t seem financially sound.
Finally can pair my red Space baby with this guy! Thank you LEGO.
The robot piloting the giant human is fun and creative so of course everyone hates it.
Yes!!!
Finally!!! I will be at the store.
Oh, look, it's the Best Set of 2026, as voted on by the Brickset audience. How predictable. LEGO, you spoil my future-telling capabilities.
I tried many years ago to make a Zane ZX minifig at this scale (6x6 feet). I didn't get past the legs, but attempting to brick-build all those prints would've made for a much more interesting model than just plain blue. Ah, well. LEGO knows what it's doing: a soccer ball for the sports people, botanicals for the plant lovers, Sauron's helmet for the LotR crowd, and a big version of a 40-year-old toy for the Brickset AFOLS. Scoring points all round.
I am curious about the studded toes and shoulders as compared to other upscaled figures. Maybe the oxygen tank ate into the parts budget?
Edit: upon further inspection it seems like the shaping used to represent the loop around the minifigures neck for the oxygen tank probably didn’t allow for an easy way to tile off the remaining area.
The thumbnail pic of this set currently showing up below this article on my phone is giving off Stay-Puft Marshmellow Man vibes with the little robot in front of the big fig.

A handful of easily obtainable parts vs a CS torso we have not seen since 2012? The robot is great and nothing to hate but for the standard classic blue, we still gotta wait.

Your last sentence is most excellent poetry.
Yes it’s lovely and yes of course I’ll be buying it (though I got an extra 40819 for £37 before Christmas so the price increase seems particularly egregious).
But other than the printed chest piece this doesn’t seem any better than the MOC upscaled spacemen I’ve seen. And the helmet shape and exposed studs are worse.
I can't wait to see the brick-built tools people will create for this. Walkie-talkie, wrench, laser gun (I forget what they called it, but we all know it was a laser gun!)
This is great, but it does seem like a missed opportunity for another spaceman recolor. Flat silver! Neon yellow! Coral! Trans-clear! Alas! We need them all!

This isn't Benny. And there were blue spacemen before Benny.
Cool to see the space branding make a comeback
Now we need him in Red and White so I can finally have pilots for my upscaled 928.

So who is in control... Benny...?
Guys! Think about the LORE. This is in same universe than MINIFIGURE SCALE sets / characters. Robot is driving this Giant Mech.
But the legs aren't quite long enough proportionately:
https://brickset.com/sets/6808-1/Galaxy-Trekkor
40819 has the toes suitably smoothed off with tiles. I feel the legs on blue astronaut need polishing. Did they change any proportions? Probably just me, it otherwise looks great.
Nightmare fuel.
Maybe I'll rebricke the robot... sorry, I meant DROID.

I think the proportions are the same, just different combinations compared to earlier figures. I don't know why the tiled the toes of the recent couple and have gone back to studs like the early models. It looks a bit inconsistent.
Very disappointing no normal blue spaceman \_/
After a few dodgy announcements over the last month, this is one I'm really happy to see! It looks lovely!

I think you are getting it wrong, friend :) I had blue space men as a kid 40 years before Benny was invented...
This is a layup
Nice, but… Give us Blacktron.
I was expecting a minifig scale blue spaceman with unfaded planet logo and unbroken helmet *sigh*
Now THAT is a set I call awesome!
And the RRP isn't too bad either, considering most of the pieces are apparently NOT just tiny 1x1s.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Unlike the Star Wars sets from a few days ago.

The belt needs to go right up to the very edge to look right (and even then it would leave obvious gaps on the sides when the arms are raised). The muscle pattern they might be able to cheat in from the edges a bit, if they’re creative about it. Or maybe do two printed slopes that they can repeat 2x to get a few lines that extend all the way out to the edge.
This is amazing. Day one for sure. So...what's next? A knight of some sort?
As an aside, I really wish the pirate was more widely available.

Um…what? TLG shared the rights to film-original TLM/TLM2 characters, if only to ensure they maintain veto rights on any further use of them (same reason they kept a controlling stake in LEGOLAND when selling part of it, and handing off operation, to Merlin). They ended their partnership with WB, and signed a film deal with Universal (which has fizzled out post-Vidiyo, by all appearances), but they certainly wouldn’t have sold any half-stake in minifig-based characters to a second studio.

I don't know if I'd get a knight if they did one, but I'd definitely be interested in seeing how they did the helmet and armor. And I wish 40504 was regular retail, too. May have to bite the bullet and get it on the secondary market.

Not sure whom that is addressing, but to clarify, I don't claim to know all the details or the current status of any license agreements between The LEGO Group and any third-parties, but it does seem foolish that they'd set up any arrangement that would necessitate their "buying back" IP licenses for characters from the film(s).
But let's assume for the sake of argument that @Joefish is operating on a sound premise and LEGO would need to buy back rights to represent Benny. In that case, LEGO would seem to still have the rights to represent a generic blue spaceman, given this set's existence, which would be the cheaper option...so, my point was (again, assuming that a separate license would even be necessary) why would they pay for Benny when they could just do a generic blue?
As for what color an up-sized astronaut SHOULD be, that is very subjective. I happen to like blue. I just would have preferred to also get a plain/non-Benny blue astronaut minifig along with it. Blue and black have gone the longest without being re-released.
I wonder if this set was already planned for the Space year, but was pulled back.
I think this one could have some interesting poll results. Can we have one? :-)
@SillyTwig said:

There's the 360 degree view on the LEGO shop site, but no better pictures either.
@Draykov said:
"Not sure whom that is addressing…"
It was directed at you, or I would have hit the reply button on the same post you replied to. You were the one who claimed TLG sold their TLM character rights to Universal. They should still co-own them with WB. Universal may co-own rights to the Vidiyo character likenesses, but nothing created specifically for TLM (there may be some IP that was represented in the film that they owned a pre-existing stake in) unless they bought WB’s stake.
"but to clarify, I don't claim to know all the details or the current status of any license agreements between The LEGO Group and any third-parties, but it does seem foolish that they'd set up any arrangement that would necessitate their "buying back" IP licenses for characters from the film(s)."
I have no idea how the money works for TLM-related sets, but they can’t give up controlling interest in the likes of Emmet and Wyldstyle or they risk some outside party being able to secure the rights to use those characters in a project that TLG would not want their name associated with.
"But let's assume for the sake of argument that @Joefish is operating on a sound premise and LEGO would need to buy back rights to represent Benny."
They wouldn’t, as long as they still co-own the character, but they may have to split the profits with their former partner.
"In that case, LEGO would seem to still have the rights to represent a generic blue spaceman, given this set's existence, which would be the cheaper option...so, my point was (again, assuming that a separate license would even be necessary) why would they pay for Benny when they could just do a generic blue?"
Rights aren’t even an issue for basic Spacemen. They own that design outright, and don’t have to share with anyone. But they may have to avoid mentioning the names Benny, Kenny, Lenny, or Penny in relation to Blue, Yellow, Dark-Pink, or White Spacemen, since those were attached to the TLM2 Spacemen Battle Pack.
"As for what color an up-sized astronaut SHOULD be, that is…"
Dark-Purple. Obviously. And then OG Blacktron.
Love it, thanks Lego.
Now just Darth Vader and Boba Fett please?

I don't dispute that. I have no idea either.

But, let's briefly assume they would [need to buy back SOME rights to be allowed to represent Benny]...to explore reasoning. For the sake of addressing the @Joefish claim that LEGO is "Bit cheap that they want to cash in on Benny without actually paying to license him!"

Okay, I see where the confusion comes from. That reads very much like "sold their share of the rights to The LEGO Movie to Universal", which would mean giving up any ownership of the TLM-original characters. Anyways, they had co-production agreements with WB and later with Universal. There may not have been any selling of rights if the ventures were considered to be equal partnerships.

^ I don't get it. I have two open tags and two close tags, but it didn't convert. Is it because of the existing quotation marks?
I do like it in and of itself, but I feel like "upscaled minifigures" are rapidly becoming too much of a good thing - not unlike Modulars. Great builds, honest good stuff, but also collectible to the point where FOMO is going to set in. And you're going to have to buy an additional house, to stash all of this stuff. Which you won't be able to afford, because you bought to so many LEGO-sets. So you have to take a second and third job, to afford all of this. At which point you won't have enough time to build the sets you bought, because you're always at work, or tired from work. So you dip into illegal substances to keep yourself energised, but they too, are expensive. So you sell your LEGO-sets, in order to fuel your other substance-abuse. Your spouse leaves you, and they're taking the kids. You have to pay alimony, but your expensive and addictive hobbies have left you penniless. You start loaning money from very serious men with very whimsical, perhaps ironic nicknames like "Patient Pete" or "Gentle Karlov", who do not seem interested in learning about the true definition of irony as they come to your doorstep in order to collect. You try to run, you change your name, you change your Brickset-handle, but can you truly ever run from who you are? From what you've done? From what you've seen?
Anyway, I don't think this is for me, thanks.
I believe this set is flying of the shelfs in no time! Great!

Then in 6805-1 Astro Dasher of 1985 he holds a weird nondescript 3-parts device (which might be what you refer to as the laser gun). Then in 1986 in Lunar Scout 1580-1 he holds a metal detector. Then I stopped looking...
I'll probably try to build a walkie-talkie as it is the first prop created for spacemen.

When they came out with the Exo-Suit, I got my hands on the other five Modern Spacemen (even gave them all clear visors), and built a magnet strip to hold all six on my fridge. Then I gave all six of them different equipment, based on the color/role pairings that I liked best (which included a rewrite of the Green job, because "mech pilot" doesn't fit with preexisting sets). I got the six pieces of equipment in old dark-grey, because that was the only color they all came in that didn't match any of the six Spacemen colors.
The set of roles, and equipment assigned, are as follows:
White - explorers, equipped with the Space Pistol (AKA the Castle torch)
Red - pilots, equipped with a Walkie-Talkie
Yellow - scientists, equipped with a Signal Paddle
Blue - security/soldiers, equipped with a Space Rifle (AKA the movie camera)
Black - spy, equipped with a Bullhorn
Green - salvage, equipped with a Minesweeper
Unfortunately, the plan starts to fall apart with the umpteen bazillion new colors of Spacemen, but that's somewhat solved by the fact that it's impossible to get matching modern helmets for every color they've released.

Hmm, maybe? That's the two open brackets I mentioned (open open text close more text close), but I guess one of them should have been on the next line down. I'm just not sure that actually matters, because I've been able to do paired brackets before. But using the brackets adds quote marks to the text, and I'm not sure if they react badly with existing quote marks.

"Single
"Brackets"
Only"
""Double Brackets""
" "Double Brackets With Space" "
[[[[Double Open]]
