BDP10: Sugar Spun Scoops Ice Cream Co.
Posted by Huw,BrickLink Designer Program series 10 voting has begun, so this week we are publishing articles written by project designers.
In this one, Lucas Michlik (BrickAndMortar) describes Sugar Spun Scoops Ice Cream Co.
Some builds start with a technical idea. This one started with a feeling.
Sugar Spun Scoops Ice Cream Co. came from memories of carefree summer days at the park, those long afternoons as a kid where time didn’t matter, colours felt brighter, and everything seemed just a little bit magical. I wanted this model to feel like something pulled straight from a childhood daydream: playful, exaggerated, and full of joy.
From the very beginning, I knew this set had to be boldly colourful. My first idea was simple but iconic, a giant ice cream cone on the roof. But once I started playing with that idea, it evolved into something much more imaginative. What if the ice cream was melting? And if it’s melting… where does it go?
That’s where my favourite feature of the entire build was born: the ice cream pond.
The oversized cotton-candy scoop and cone sit proudly on the roof, showcasing the shop’s logo, slowly melting in the summer heat. The pastel streams cascade down the side of the container and pool into a whimsical pond below, where ducks splash around to cool off, possibly getting a sugar rush in the process. Designing this transition from roof to pond was easily the most fun part of the project, blending structure, colour, and storytelling into one flowing element.
The shop itself is set within a lively park scene, inspired by those childhood days spent outdoors. A beautiful flowering tree stretches overhead, creating the perfect spot for a picnic beneath its branches. Flowers, mushrooms, and small animals dot the landscape, while every corner offers something playful to discover. With the circus in town, minifigures are dressed up and ready to celebrate, adding motion, character, and a festive summer energy to the scene.
Inside the container, Sugar Spun Scoops comes alive as a working ice cream shop, complete with machines serving fresh, handmade flavours. The interior details help ground the fantasy, balancing the dreamlike exterior with a cozy, believable space where customers line up for their favourite treats.
This model involved a lot of creativity and experimentation, but that was exactly the point. I wanted Sugar Spun Scoops to feel less like a traditional building and more like an experience, something joyful, a little absurd, and full of imagination. In many ways, it reminds me of the kinds of dreams kids have, where rules bend, colours melt, and even ice cream can turn into a pond.
At its heart, Sugar Spun Scoops Ice Cream Co. is a celebration of summer, childhood, and the simple happiness of being outside on a warm day. It’s a build meant to make you smile, spark stories, and remind you of a time when the world felt sweet, colourful, and full of possibility.

Makes me want ice cream. 100% getting a nice ice cream over lunch in Your Honor buddy, thanks for bringing back sweet treat memories
That hot dog man seems sinister. What is he doing at an ice cream stand? Wrong type of food. Children should stay far away from him and his hot dogs...

Dairy Queen used to provide dogs with your blizzards. :o)
Good luck to the designer. It's not for me, though, as it's just a bit too busy.
I guess technically it counts as Castle, Pirates, Paradisa, and Classic Space, with all those minifigure elements...?

Dairy Queen has all kinds of food to go with your Blizzard, hot dogs, hamburgers, onion rings. Now I'm hungry.

Oohhh... Onion rings...
Aaaaand...suddenly I want a Blizzard...either Mint Oreo, or (personal fave) Strawberry Cheesequake/cake (I like the 'original name' better:))...I think it sucks we didn't get something like 'Frozen Hot Chocolate' (and we're waaaay too early for this year's 'Pumpkin Pie' Blizzard)...wait, were we talking about again...:D
Either this is written with AI or the author really likes blowing their own trumpet in the same way AI does.
‘It takes all these things and all my time
Till my sugar spun sister’s happy
With this love of mine’

I am a huge fan of the stone roses! They are one of my favourite bands and this set name did take inspiration from that song! Thanks for noticing. -Lucas

I did wonder when I saw the set title…! That’s the best tribute ever.
The Stone Roses is my favourite LP of all time and the set name immediately got the song playing in my head. I hope you’ve got some hidden lemon’s as Easter eggs in there some where.
RIP Mani - I’m sure he would have loved this.
