Yu-Gi-Oh! competition on LEGO Ideas

Posted by ,

LEGO Ideas has kicked off a competition seeking entries that celebrate Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters.

The entry requirements are quite specific, so if you're up for a challenge, and you know anything about Yu-Gi-Oh (that counts me out then...), head to LEGO Ideas to find out more.

The winning entry will be made into a LEGO set, sometime in 2027 at this rate.

Yu-Gi-Oh appears to be some random Anime. Think you have to be a fan of Anime and Manga to know about it.

It was big in the '90s...

A timely choice lol.

...and the '00s.

I was never into it myself, but several of my classmates had the cards and video games.

There was even a Hot Wheels series!

By in South Africa,

Since it only includes Duelist Kingdom and Battle City. Then someone please do a diorama of Kaiba threatening to off himself against Yugi. That way we get minifigures as well.

Ah, that one that wasn't Pokémon. Or Digimon.

Ahh! Bricksodia! No one has ever been able to build him!

Wanted to make a LEGO Duel Disk, but I guess that’s not what the guidelines are asking for?

Also where does it list the rewards for winning?

The Brickset Rock strikes again!

Yeah I loved watching it, still should have hundreds of trading cards somewhere.
But I don't consider it suitable for lego

About all I know about Yu-Gi-Oh is that it has a card called "Megatron." (I only know that because of the "Trademark" page on TFWiki, which mentions it. https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Trademark). That would not be the Lego Megatron we wanted.

Every day, LEGO puts one more nail in my coffin. Thanks, LEGO.

Interesting. I wonder if that Ideas entry from a while ago might re-appear.
I imagine some may wonder why this is being done via Ideas, instead of just a straight collab a la Pokemon. I think this is a smart move tbh; Yu-Gi-Oh is undoubtedly a big IP with a sizable following to this day, but it never really reached the absolute ubiquity that Pokemon did. So, doing a one-off set in this way makes more sense.

Same! I've almost given up on sets - it really, really has to tickle my fancy in order to buy a new set - which mean trains stuff usually. (PAB is another matter, however - I buy a crud ton of that.)

It's time to b-b-b-b-build!

By in Canada,

Oh wow, I can't believe this is happening. Yu-Gi-Oh! is far from its prime, but they'll get me with nostalgia!

I don't remember if it happened in the anime because it's been so long, but it kind of has to be Blue-Eyes White Dragon versus Dark Magician. These are the most iconic monsters of that era. Not easy to translate into bricks.

I personally would like a Time Wizard. It's actually one of the first cards that I got, I was so happy... but then I left it in my pockets and it got DESTROYED by the washing machine...AAAAAAAAAAHH still hurts.

Still going. Possibly still reprinting some of those cards....in tiny, tiny font to fit the whole rules paragraph on, making it impossible to read.

I'm expecting a white dragon build

Ok but what does that do?

By in United States,

The Ideas Challenge page stipulates that entries focus on the "Battle City" or "Duelist Kingdom" arcs of the "Duel Monsters" anime (2000-2005). Yu-Gi-Oh! has been a media franchise for 25 years, so that probably keeps the evaluation tractable.

The specific licensor isn't identified, but over those 25 years it has involved multiple manga, animation, game, and foreign adaptors -- none of which are Nintendo (Super Mario, Pokémon, Legend of Zelda), so it's evidently a new licensing arrangement for TLG.

...of course they are making a set on Yu-Gi-Oh.

Ishuzoku Reviewers! ;-)

All jokes aside, how about Neon Genesis Evangelion? Ghost in the Shell? Akira? Or anything Gundam?

You gotta be a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! specifically. It was mainstream...20 years ago. It's irrelevant, for the most part these days.

If they wanna license popular anime series that are mostly kid friendly, MHA, Naruto, Full-Metal alchemist & various Ghibli films.

Many anime series that would sell like crazy aren't appropriate for children. Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, Vinland Saga, just to name a few.

By in United States,

Pretty neat! I'm not much into Yu-Gi-Oh these days but when I was a teen I watched/played it a lot, and even did miniland-scale figures of some of the characters and monsters. Probably won't build anything for this but hope someone comes up with something cool.

By in United States,

I remember when we first got Star Wars, quickly followed by Harry Potter. Then came Disney.

2011 blew our minds with Marvel, DC, and then unbelievably Lord of the Rings.

The flood gates opened and we were awash with The Simpsons, Ghostbusters, Jurassic Park, Stranger Things, Minecraft, Jaws, Pokemon, Mario, F1, Zelda, Atari, Bluey, Avatar, Other Avatar, Indiana Jones, TMNT, Scooby, PotC, Spongebob, Sonic, One Piece, Wicked, Star Trek and so much more.

We even got Overwatch, Horizon, and God help me Adidas and Nike.

I think it's time we just accept that any/every license is coming to LEGO at some point, so long as there is a current market.

Demonic Popstar hunters? Sure. Chick Fil A? Great. Costco? Of course. Slow Horses? Why not. With LEGO picking up MPAA R Rated licenses like Jaws, I think everything is on the table including the ubiquitous Aliens and Predator IPs. Probably still no Game of Thrones, though. George R.R. Martin grabbed every third rail he could find.

By in United States,

All I know about this IP is that a former judge showed up at a major competition with a deck that was designed to make games (without violating any rules) last longer than the venue was rented for. And but for the luck of one draw in the elimination rounds, it could well have blown out the tournament. But they might not like to be reminded of that little incident…

By in United Kingdom,

Seems like a very odd choice. The anime series seems to have faded into obscurity, and even at my local gaming store no-one plays the card game anymore and they won't stock the cards for it.

Nah, it also has collectible playing cards (like pokemon) that have been really popular at times. Around the mid 2000s trading them was the main passtime in British schools lol. Not sure about since then. Did have tv shows too.
