By in United Kingdom,

Nice idea for a contest, but given I don't use the website, a prize in store credit is utterly useless to me, and I'm guessing alot of other people.

Terribly off-topic, I’m afraid, but is anyone else having the database tell them to log in to access it even though they’re already logged in?

Thanks. I don’t need to troubleshoot on my end, then.

This is quite a silly comment. They are promoting their website through this contest so of course the prize is store credit on their website

Your right your comment is quite silly, as why can't the prize be $100 that can be spent anywhere? They're willing to give away $100, so why lock it to only being able to spend it on them?

Because the point of the contest isn’t pure altruism. They want people to think of their website as a place to go shopping, and whoever wins will be placing at least one order, thus handily establishing that. Whoever loses might yet have planned how to spend the money, and thus still spend at least part of it.

Spending the money elsewhere would do less than nothing for them. What financial benefit does the competition have then?

(Also, 100 dollars of store credit isn’t actually the same as 100 dollars, in terms of what it costs them.)

By in Netherlands,

Would be great if this series in particular hadn't been scalped to oblivion

I really need to stop posting when I'm lacking caffeine as I forgot to explain the point that its been a proven thing with contests that when a prize is something that can only be spent at one place, generally the only people who get involved with the contest are the people who already use that singular place.

However, when the prize is open, you get more word of mouth being spread about the contest as more people being interested as they don't think 'I can only spend it here'. Basically its a far better promotion for them as the company gets a wider and greater spread of people hearing about it, so long term, you'd have more people giving the company a try than you do with the closed prize.

By in United States,

As a photographer, this appeals to me immensely. Would I have ever ordered from this place without the contest? No. If I win would I consider ordering after I’ve already spent my prize money. If I have a good experience, yes.

This is just good marketing 101

If I A: were fully able-bodied and B: had better photography equipment than a smartphone camera, I might try doing something for this. Maybe 71052-3 and/or 71052-11 versus 71052.

I decided against it on the basis that I don’t like surprise!customs fees very much, but the prompt is interesting. I might have a try for my own amusement and as a mental exercise - it doesn’t matter if my photos aren’t very good and my captions very silly if I’m the only one who sees them, however blurry and lopsided the pics end up from trying to activate the shutter with my nose.

By in United Kingdom,

And you can always post the images on the server. We like a LEGO pic (at least I do) even if merely to replace the erstwhile regular pictures of volcanoes.....

Except they're not giving the company a try, in that case. They're just entering a contest, and taking the money elsewhere, without ever chancing being converted into a regular customer. And as @Hiratha pointed out, $100 store credit is not the same as $100 cash. Cash costs them $100 (plus any costs associated with actually delivering the price to you). Store credit includes their markup, which is just a writeoff. TLG briefly did a thing where they would hold events in large US cities, and for the early events would pay USD to members of various LUGs who came and displayed at these events. They quickly shifted to giving store credit for two reasons. First, it eliminated the need to deal with income tax filings on both ends, as no actual money changed hands. And second, they were able to offer twice as much payment in store credit because they only had to account for the wholesale price. So wins all around. Until they killed the program, which I think lasted less than a year.

You know, the Tahu minifig would look pretty cool with a volcano in the background. Now, where can I find a volcano in the wettest state in the US...

I suggest doing a story about how you did, or did not, manage to find them in time. alternately, emigrate.

By in United States,

@Huw are there any additional parameters for the contest? For example, are they looking for the minifigure to be in the real world? or can we build out a lego world for the figure to be photographed in? Also, can other minifigures outside of series 29 be included? don't want to be disqualified before submitting!

I do, but that’s not a _real_ volcano. For now, I’ve got one standing on top of another club member’s building at a show. The building’s dark-red, so, like volcanos, it is pretty explosive.
