Review: 11505 Woodland Mushrooms

Posted by ,

The most interesting and innovative addition to the Botanical collection this year is undoubtedly 11505 Woodland Mushrooms, an eye-catching and very colourful display of various varieties of toadstools and plants typically found on the ground of Northern European woodlands.

So, let's go foraging for fungi...

Summary

11505 Woodland Mushrooms, 806 pieces.
£69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 | 8.7p, 9.9c, 9.9c per piece.

A spectacular and beautiful addition to the botanical collection

  • No fiddly, repetitive, building involved
  • The fly agaric toadstools are wonderfully realistic
  • In fact, they all are!
  • None

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

New parts and prints

I did not encounter any new parts in the set, but it does have these very attractive printed domes and radar dishes used for the tops of the largest mushrooms.

Construction

The display sits atop a substantial base which is given a 'decaying wood' texture around its perimeter. The fungi and undergrowth are largely attached via clips or pins, allowing them to be rotated or angled to your liking.

Unlike many other botanical sets, there is not a lot of repetitive and fiddly construction involved, which can mar the experience when building them, and in fact it comes together quite quickly.

Other than the gills on the bottom of the large mushrooms, which I'll get to in a minute, there are no particularly innovative construction techniques, but there is plenty of nice parts usage, such as dwarfs' hats for mushroom heads.

The completed model

There's a beautiful array of shapes, textures, and autumnal colours in the model, which is dominated by the eye-catching and realistic-looking reddish-orange fly agaric mushrooms.

The brick-built structure at the back of the base is covered with undergrowth, and the front edges of the base have been softened with leaves, which helps give the display an organic appearance.

The fungi and plants

The printing on the top of giant poisonous fly agaric mushrooms looks excellent, but the best part of them is not revealed until you look underneath.

The gills below the cap and the annulus at the top of the stem look absolutely superb, and are the stand-out feature of the model.

The gills comprise 16 white 'claws' clipped to a steering wheel.

The common bonnet on the left makes use, appropriately, of dwarves' and elves' hats. The fungi on the right of the decaying tree stump are oyster mushrooms, and are perhaps the least convincing of the species depicted in the model.

Autumn crocus are not fungi, of course, but they can be found in the same habitat as mushrooms and the pair of them add a dramatic splash of colour to the scene.

Marzipan fibrecap is another toxic species that apparently smells of marzipan. The dome is perhaps a bit too conical for that particular variety, but they make for excellent mushroom heads nevertheless.

This collared earthstars utilise minifig shields and triangular road signs to form their star-shaped arms.

Unlike many of the species in the set, golden chanterelles are a highly-prized culinary delicacy that, I've just learned, can't be cultivated commercially, which also makes them expensive.

Finally, two fronds of fern finish off the model, adding fresh lime and bright green to the colour palette, and depth and texture to the rear of the display.

Verdict

This is an outstanding and novel addition to the Botanicals series. It's a pleasure to build, and it looks wonderful from all angles, especially low-down. I don't think I need to say any more...

The 806-piece set costs £69.99, $79.99, €79.99 and has proved to be so popular on its launch day today that it's out of stock in the UK and Europe at LEGO.com already.

See, this is nice. I like this. I find these sets relaxing and rewarding to build. You could even throw some minifigures in here, pretend Rick Moranis shrank them. You could even add 11380 to this scene to ruin a perfectly nice day in the forest, just like the real thing.

I am not a huge fan of printed pieces in the Botanicals-line though. This is usually the line where NPU shines, but on the other hand I don't really see how those mushroom-caps could've been brick-built. It's fine, this is fine.

Ordered this and Minas Tirith an hour ago (US).

I can picture this as a vignette.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It looks pretty great, but I am still missing a bit of ....magic.....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A stunning set. It's a shame that Lego seems to be notoriously bad at predicting day-one sales needs!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A nice display, packed with features - in fact there's not mushroom for anything else!

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Looking forward to this when there's a nice GWP or 2x VIP. This is incredible design and will look great on display.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like this alot, it would fit very well the BDP Mushroom House.

First thing being added to my wish list in quite a while.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Should look good with the BDP Mushroom House and Village!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looking at the review, I'd say the only 'flaw', if you can even call it that is the back of the set. But then given vast majority of people will have this being displayed against a wall, its a good thing they've used the extra detailing to improve the overall realism of this set.

Said it before, but I'll say it again. This is the best looking Botanicals set they've produced so far.

And, of course, once fungies have been foraged there's still grape-nuts to grapple!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

It’s a nice set. Built it the other day. Doesn’t take up mushroom on the shelf either.

I feel like you could stick a couple of fantasy minifigures on here with zero modification and it’d still be perfectly in sync as a concept. Maybe put a little hideaway in the empty space at the bottom.

By in Netherlands,

Very tempting

Gravatar
By in United States,

I will wait for the full on Matango set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Botanicals theme isn’t one that usually interests me much, but I may have to pick this set up. The build doesn’t look too tedious, it doesn’t require a separate vase, and you even get some nice printed pieces.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Will definitely be buying this, but it might end up being next year as there are too many things retiring this year that I still want.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Those myconids definitely need better eyes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Excellent set, but a bit small for $80. That said, I still don't have mushroom for it at the moment. But I'll probably grab one if it shows up at Costco for the usual 20% off before I quit in August.

Now that LEGO has made this, they need to make a badger in the Creator 3-in-1 line; I need 12 of them, and then 70674 should suffice as a snake....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Push the plates on all the way!

Anyway, this is the first Botanicals set that's actually interested me. I might pick it up if I can catch up on all the sets that retire this year (curse you Ninjago for pulling me back in!)

Gravatar
By in Poland,

A perfect set for ANYONE who wants to build oversized forest setting.
LOVE IT

I'm hoping to focus on the retiring sets but mannn so many news i want too. Balancing be hard

Gravatar

Enough of the fungi jokes -- there's not mushroom left on the page for all your comments!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Looks good, but too many parts wasted on base and plants instead of the shrooms. And most of these are not edible either. I would have expected them to at least include a Boletus Edulis (Penny Bun).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not leaving a negative comment about this set because I want you all to think that I'm a fungi.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Don't understand the crocus in this set.
A crocus is a flower almost synonymous with Spring, while fungi like the ones in this set are particularly found in Autumn. There are so many typical autumnal flowers. Why choose a crocus?
Ruins the whole set for me.

This is a great looking set. Can't wait to grab and build it

I wonder how it looks displayed next to the Snails from a couple years back

Gravatar

Love this set so much, probably going to buy multiple.
That little cave / nook in the back is just begging for a toad...

Interesting.
Nevertheless, I have never seen or heard of this my entire life. It's just so engrained in my mind as a symbol of spring that it feels totally weird to combine a crocus with fungi.
Doesn't matter. Don't need every set anyway, will just skip this one.

By in Turkey,

It's a beautiful display piece to have on your patio.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Mushrooms are great, decay exists as an extant form of life is an all-time top ten meme, I love what the base brings to the whole arrangement, good NPU, nice prints that look good even though they’re white on colour, what’s not to love? One of the best Botanicals sets yet.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Despite not being fan of Botanicals (as a set to be exposed, inlike the techniques which are often cool), this, as an autumn lover is my favorite released of June2026.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I cannot wait to see the adaptions of tiny windows and doors added to make home for an elves paradise.

Gravatar

Looking forward to building mine in the next couple if days. It will be fun, guys.

I eagerly anticipated this set for a couple of months and was a day one purchase for me. I like to 'savour' the build of most of my sets and I'm through bags 1-4 of 6 at the moment. A fun build...great review Huw.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This might just be my first Botanicals set!.... As a gardener, don't see the point in plastic flowers of any sort. Though have appreciated NPU.
But now Fungi..... that's mycologically terrific!

I must be your polar opposite. I built 10179 in a total of 18 hours, 44 minutes, over a span of a day and a half.

This is what I love to see in Botanicals sets, fun and clever use of existing parts rather than just repetitive assembly of parts designed to look like what they’re supposed to be

Or you could just put Ant-Man (or https://brickset.com/minifigs/sh0293/atom-(san-diego-comic-con-2016-exclusive), if you're lucky enough to have him) in there. No Rick Moranis needed.

It's never been adequately explained WHY mushroom-people would agree to serve under a human ruler. This is not unlike everyone in a single country agreeing that they should obey the whims of a very attractive patch of moss (by moss-standards). It also suggests that Peach just moved in one day and enslaved the mushroom-people, which kind of checks out. Peach does not give two sharts about her people, this is alarmingly well-documented. I honestly believe it could be good for the Mushroom Kingdom to toil under Bowser's yoke for a few weeks, it might be a refreshing change of bootheel for Toad and his fellow serfs.

Peach doesnt GAF about the subjects of the mushroom kingdom cuz she knows theyre just fruiting bodies of a single larger organism. Marching little mushroom people to their deaths is just spreading spores. The KINGDOM is the mushroom.

It's been FORTY-ONE YEARS, Peach. I know your schedule is pretty tight what with all of the golfing and tennis and kart-racing and street-fighting and soccer and partying with the guy who bricked your people, but Daisy can do almost anything you can, and most people prefer to pick Rosalina anyway. You've got time. Uncurse the horsehair-plants, you monster.
