LEGO KPop Demon Hunters Derpy Tiger and Sussie Bird revealed!
Posted by CapnRex101,LEGO KPop Demon Hunters was announced earlier this year, with a teaser of the theme's first set, which has been revealed today!
72537 Derpy Tiger and Sussie Bird
825 pieces, rated 9+
$69.99 / £59.99 / €69.99
Available at LEGO.com from 1st August
Let fans of the KPop Demon Hunters movie bring a beloved pair of characters to life with this Derpy Tiger and Sussie Bird (72537) LEGO animal building toy. Girls and boys can have a blast assembling this fun piece of K-pop merch and recreating memorable scenes from the movie.
Choose from 2 expressions to show off the tiger’s goofy grin or let him deliver a sweet love note on his tongue. Pose the duo using their movable features, then pop the magpie on the tiger’s head for a true bird’s-eye view! The set includes 2 love notes and a flowerpot for the tiger to knock over. When playtime is over, store the accessories in the secret compartment in Derpy’s head.
It has been an incredibly quick turnaround from the movie's release last June to its first LEGO set a year later, but I think Derpy and Sussie look superb, nonetheless. While I am feeling some fatigue around buildable characters at the moment, I am looking forward to this duo.
What do you think of this set? Let us know in the comments.

does anybody want this?
I mean, it looks good, but I'll wait for the mini-doll sets next year. I'm getting kinda tired of all these animal statues

I mean, K-Pop Demon Hunters was very popular so presumably yes.

Not you, and that’s ok.
Thanks, I hate it.
Cute!

A member of my LUG uses the tiger as her avatar, so...
I remember MLP:FIM having issues naming one of the Ponies "Derpy." Can't help but wonder why this gets a pass...
Regardless, looks alright. Head's too big. Seems like they went the HTTYD Toothless route with a more SD take.
If I was a fan of the property (which I am not) I would prefer a plushy toy of said animal. I mean, it looks as if it was designed to be cuddly, yet LEGO inherently is not.

Not with that attitude.

The head ratio is fairly accurate, he’s a top-heavy guy. Probably had to increase it a little bit to include the storage feature, but Toothless was definitely hit with the Funko Pop hammer.
I think the MLP derpy was a little more…overt? Whereas this guy is more just a little slow, in an endearing way. Also probably a difference in fanbase that makes it easier
It looks good, and it's a really popular character. It'll probably sell decently.
I probably won't buy it myself, mostly because there are too many other sets I want more.

I think the implication of this question is more around the form factor than the subject matter. It’s a nice enough model but not quite a toy; articulation seems a bit limited for that kind of thing, for example.

Ah but if you were a fan of the property (which you are not), you would already have a shelf with 7 plushies, 2 beanbags, and 6 plastic models of said animal, in which case a LEGO version would be a welcome addition!
Though the idea of plushy LEGO is interesting. Fuzzy bricks…
The ability of Lego fandom to always manifest at least one person apparently unaware that [insert phenomenally popular thing here] is phenomenally popular continues to impress me.
I think this kit is neat. The design of the creatures is very fun. Unless KPDH falls off a cultural cliff (unlikely) I imagine it will sell well.
Same reaction when I saw 77078
I have NO idea what I'm looking at, but I kinda like it and I can't really explain why.
That is definitely a cryptid.
I think it looks great! The face really shines through with the derpy look, and it's very nice they were able to double that big head as storage.
And it's not ridiculously overpriced. Also a score.
Now looking forward to what the future rumored KPop Demon Hunter sets will be ...
I like it. Will look to pick it up for my son who is a fan of the film. Will wait for a discount, I dont like it £60 worth
Never saw the film so no idea what it is, or if it looks accurate. But is this the lego set depicting someone/thing takes LSD/acid/or whatever you wanna call it?
I saw this with my daughter a few days ago and it was surprisingly not that annoying. And this cat was the highlight!

Nope. The trippy ripple background is actually an important feature in the worldbuilding.

Weirdly... Yes. Grandkids made me watch the movie, and its actually pretty darn good.
I like that they've chosen to do some smart building and included a storage space inside the head for accessories. That said though, £60 feels a little expensive for this set, even if all the elements seem to be printed. Plus, feel like they're a little late out with this to really cash in on the popularity it had.
I know this *was* very popular, but I do wonder if Lego (and Mattel) have missed the boat here a little. Presumably there'll be a sequel sooner rather than later, at least.

I’d put more of the blame on Sony/Netflix, the film release was practically buried until it took off. I believe a sequel has been mentioned, but the fans are definitely still out there

You are completely unaware of how large KPDH has been, aren't you?
This is amazing, Day one purchase all the way. 70$ for a licensed set with a good amount of pieces and for once not too far from the movie release? Sold.
Oh no… it’s nightmare fuel. I don’t know what I was expecting but, yikes, this’ll haunt my dreams tonight.
I enjoyed the film and loved this character, but I share CapnRex101's fatigue with buildable characters--they take up so much space and they just aren't very playable.
Hopefully Derpy and Sussie both show up in affordable minifigure/minidoll scale sets next year!
I’m surprised nobody has said this yet, but even if you don’t know or care about the movie very much, these characters also show up a lot in Korean folklore and art. So those who are interested in that will likely also be interested and will just not use the funny little cards. I myself will not be getting this set due to a lack of finances and space, but I’m super excited to see what other KPDH sets come out! This was a great movie and I would highly recommend watching it if you haven’t already!

Remember that Seinfeld set they released 20 years after the show ended? Or all those Star Wars sets depicting scenes from 40-year old movies? All the Frozen and Harry Potter sets coming out years after the movies hit cinemas? I could go on...
The thing with movies and TV shows, especially those intended for kids, is that they constantly get rewatched long after when they are initially promoted. I don't even think K-Pop Demon Hunters was ever properly promoted, as it was a sleeper hit for the studio.
I'm sure these sets will do fine. The fan base is huge.

They're not well documented by a long shot, but there are several plushes of Olly the dragon. And more recently (and more famously) there have been plush Spacement and the plush "sporifice" alien.

Many people don't seem to understand that it's typical for a film to spend as much on marketing as they do on production, meaning the box office haul has to be about three times the budget before the studio sees any meaningful profit. Certain releases, that effort would be wasted. The people you're advertising to won't bother to show up, and the people who do show up will already know exactly when the film is coming out. So, you can spend that much on marketing and not see any meaningful increase at the box office, or you can skip the marketing and hope the movie does well enough to earn a little back.
Besides, being a Netflix release, they don't actually care about the box office numbers. What they want is to lure you into paying for a Netflix subscription, while meeting the minimum requirements to qualify for various awards.

Some things hold their appeal longer than others, and I'd argue that kids' media is quicker to move on to the next big thing than properties aimed wholly or partially at nostalgic adults.
These sets might still do great, but I see a lot less about this movie now than I did last year, and I've read anecdotes about people planning to buy the Mattel action figures for younger relatives only for them to have lost interest in the mean time.
Lego’s website tells me there’s a Sora-from-Ninjago plushie, amongst other plushiefied minifig recreations, but catching the plushie you want *in stock* is an entirely different matter. /grump
(And none of the dragon plushies — Riyu excepted, although also out of stock — seem to have made it online at all, wail, gnash teeth, etc.)
Oh this is cute. I love the colour. Hahaha! Kinda reminds me of a Japanese fortune cat. But I think the secret compartment in the head looks weird.
Looks good, lots of cool printed pieces if nothing else. That bird is much better than the MOCs I've seen.

While I'm sure than many of the kids who got into it last year might already be over it, some of the most popular kids franchises in the past decade and a half prove that certain big IPs have the longevity to last long past a initial fan's childhood. As long as the movie or show is still relevant to kids today, it can remain to be popular. Especially if it has catchy songs.
For example, Frozen is still popular with kids, even though the children who first watched it when that movie came out are now adults. If a movie manages to stay in the public eye long enough, as is the case with Frozen, you can keep selling products aimed at kids. Then, once nostalgia kicks in, you have two markets to sell product to. While it scares me to say so, Frozen isn't that far from being a nostalgia brand by now.
Another prime example I like to point to is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. First off, because I like that franchise a lot, but also because the original cartoon show and toy line were incredibly long in the tooth, running a full decade. While sales did taper off substantially near the end of that timespan, once Turtlemania was past its peak, you could still find the same core figures in stores ten years after their introduction -- and you can still find them in stores today, as a nostalgia product.

It's really impressive how quickly they turned this set around. From concept to final release in less than a year is crazy! And the set looks pretty great, although I'm not really interested until we get some mini-dolls or minifigures.

movie* and I'm fairly certain this is the first of many sets, this one just having a quicker turnaround due to the unexpected success. Minifig/dolls will probably come in 2027.
This must be the first bigger buildable creature that actually LOOKS great from every side.
It also seems to be AMAZING set for building own creatures!
What a cute one.

Looking closely at all of the relevant images, the two notes (in particular the purple one) go too close to the edges to be stickers. The nose, forehead spots, and belly spots all could be accomplished with stickers, but there's clearly no sticker edge in any of the photos. The claws are 1x1 parts, and you need 16 of them, and there's no visible sticker edge, so highly unlikely those aren't just prints. The only deco that could be stickers, based on what I'm seeing, are the eyes. Those, however, are the least likely to be left to stickers, as essential facial features. Everything else appears to be accomplished with parts on the tiger.
On the bird, all the prints are 1x1, and 6/8ths of them are eyes.

Thank you, even though if I wouldn't really be interested in any Kpop demon hunters sets (I have seen it) I think Minifigure sets would be far cooler.
Not that I particularly dislike buildable characters but I think LEGO has had a running problem of making too many of them over playsets. I think the figures they made for LEGO Fortnite actually look really cool.

I wouldn't say I am completely unaware, I watched the movie and I know it holds netflix's streaming record, but I don't think I would be far off in guessing it is way past it's prime popularity.
And my problem lies more in that the sole set is a buildable character for display. Minifigure sets need to come back. It's like when they released that wave of 3 buildable character toy story sets earlier this year that only had one Minifigure between the three and it was the worst version of woody we've ever gotten.

The first rule of the Brickset comments is that any and all comments will be reinterpreted to make the person replying look intellectually or morally superior.
That being said, I'll be curious if any further announced sets are minifig-scale playsets. I think that's where the real demand is. People seem to resonate more with Rumi, Zoey, Mira, and Jinu far more than the tiger and bird who I forgot had actual names beyond just "the tiger and bird"

43304 includes minifigs of both Woody and Jessie, and the only versions of them where Jessie is wearing the badge instead of Woody. Besides coming with a standard badged Woody, 43301 is the only set to ever include any version of Slinky Dog. And you can blame that version of Woody on 43264, which came out last year.

My apologies. I saw it go up on rebrickable as well and there's a bunch of users having meltdowns over this set (I suspect most of whom are boys that are too stupid to realize that there might be a girl-focused line might actually be popular).

my bad for forgetting the ranch set, good point. I am aware of the Slinky Dog but wouldn't consider that a minifigure. But that's besides the point for the kpop set.

Not me, but as with Nike Airmax and football sets which I would never get for myself, my kids prove to have a completely different taste. According to my 9yo daughter, who is now past the huge KPDH hype, this is an amazing set, much better than any play set with minidolls could be and she wants it immediately on 1st Aug. So, the answer to this is simple - kids want it.

I didn't watch it when it first came out. Then I watched it recently and I loved it.
Also the backstory of how the movie and music was made is interesting and I recommend the community to read about it. Gives you some sense of understanding of why it's popular. Similar to the feeling you get when there's those Easter-eggs in some LEGO sets.

It wasn’t rage bait but it was honest enough to drive significant discourse. That works for me.
For me, sets rely on some combination of IP, design, display, build, play, and overall value. I don’t know this IP so it will need to speak to me in the other areas. A perfect example of this happening is the Fortnight tomato. I don’t play the game but the design and not completely unreasonable value drove me to make it my first regular LEGO purchase in months.
Yuck.
Yes, I get it, it's from a hugely popular series, the fans of it will love it, yes, yes, etc.
But it's a fugly model.
the need I have for the set immediately ... oof

As Fry once said "Shut up & take my money!", I have been in love with KPDH since I first watched it & hearing we'd get a set on these 2 months ago I was really excited and I honestly am OVER the moon with this set, instant purchase when I have the funds!!
I can’t do acid anymore at my age, but I appreciate the effort.
I'm not surprised to see the comment section for these kinds of sets anymore, we have people hating them and people who defend the hated sets whether it is something they themselves are interested in or not.
The way I look at it, considering how many sets Lego releases these days and still happens to keep releasing the "classics" like the annual modular building and the two nicely sized Creator 3 in 1 waves each year, the usual large and small Star Wars sets, etc I honestly don't see any reason to care about releases you don't find interesting, I personally just ignore them even though I always wonder why anyone is interested in them but if Lego keeps making so many of these larger scale character "statue" sets then surely there is enough demand.

That's the best view from an actual photo. No sticker borders visible on the nose or belly. The eyes would be the hardest to identify, due to the way the print leaves a consistent border. However, I'm not seeing any examples of round tiles with stickered eye deco. I'm sticking with this being 100% prints.

That's the best view from an actual photo. No sticker borders visible on the nose or belly. The eyes would be the hardest to identify, due to the way the print leaves a consistent border. However, I'm not seeing any examples of round tiles with stickered eye deco. I'm sticking with this being 100% prints."
For the record, there are indeed no stickers.

Apparently there's a review in the works?
I think if they're going to make a set like this, it would look better with the character's actual proportions instead of this semi-chibi type of thing. The proportions aren't even too different; they'd just wouldn't have such a tiny body.
