Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 7
Posted by CapnRex101,
I was hoping we might see a Republic starfighter of some sort today to contrast with yesterday's Vulture Droid, but instead the Star Wars Advent Calendar has changed tack entirely and appears to have moved to Hoth.
This tripodal blaster obviously recalls the E-Web Blaster Cannon used by Imperial forces during the Battle of Hoth, a weapon which has appeared in LEGO sets on several occasions over the last few years. This model is smaller than those we have seen before but it still resembles the cannon from the film quite nicely, albeit with a seasonal twist.
I think the addition of one of the stud-firing blasters introduced early this year is excellent here as not only does it provide plenty of playability but it also gives an excuse for some extra 1x1 round plates to be included as snowballs! As ever it is possible to fire these studs a couple of feet horizontally, which is a pretty decent distance in my opinion.
A blaster pistol is also included today which can be fitted to the top of the blaster cannon to resemble a rangefinder, although you can of course equally use it to simply arm your troops.
Overall - 3.5 - This is not what I wanted to see today, but is a nice addition to the calendar nevertheless. With a minifigure to control it and something to shoot at, this will become a lot of fun in days to come.

Looks like a snowball gun to me.
Cool! I like how they used the shooter to make the cannon work, instead of putting it in a minifigs hand.
I don't actually know how those stud-firing pieces work, nor have I seen any clips of them being used. I'm really quite confused by them.
Looks like the hinge-y thing on the side is pressed in, pushing the stud out of the hole.
@TheBeefThief - You push the grey piece on the top of the gun (here it is on the side) which forces the stud to pop out of the end. It is held there purely by tension and it is the sudden release of his tension which launches the 1x1 plate so far.
Those stud launchers are really good for things like this , but awful to use for hand weapons.
This is a nice model of the blaster cannon it represents , and excellent in that it actually fires instead of seeming useless. I'm sure kids will love it. I'll build one myself.
Actually , they did have these in the clone wars. Play the game republic commando or read the books of the same name , they existed then.
That is an awesome weapon.
SNOWBALL FIGHT!!!!!
Awesome! Best use Ive seen so far for those stud launching pistols. I dont think they work well in the hands of a minifig, but as a cannon. . . . . I think Im going to disarm my Utapau Troopers and make a few more of these.
Poor Super Battle Droid cannot operate the cannon or really hold the pistol/rifle so right now, the Clone Trooper is armed to the teeth!
Not sure a Super Battle Droid can understand the concept of a snowball fight anyway--perhaps this is why the Clone Trooper looks so sour despite his festive attire? He can't find anyone to play with?? :-)
It's a toilet roll gun!
What was that about a pistol? Is it a SW short blaster or a revolver from a galaxy close, close by? Is it not pictured?
It's the pistols that were first equipped to the green clone in the 2011 clone BP.
@Binnekamp you can see the blaster here https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8680/15963020205_bfac261a10_o_d.jpg
