I get production timelines but not getting this out until October 1st does feel like a missed opportunity for them. Maybe if they'd done a pre-order version from the very start that promised a print with the winning team? There's probably no right answer and I ain't gonna pretend to be some business expert, Lego almost certainly knows better than I do

I have never liked the aesthetics of this trophy and all the FIFA shenanigans of late have not exactly helped. I was never going to buy the first version and I’m not going to buy this one either. Still happy for any Spain fans for whom this is the fulfilment of their wildest Lego football dreams, I guess.

Plus I think many of us can get behind Spain winning given the alternative, so there’s that.

I *am* going to go check how many shiny pieces this has since the combination of the unshiny Hubble grumbling and the Klimt podcast mentioning that The Kiss’ set posed some significant logistical challenges due to having so many has made me curious.

I feel like there wouldn’t be many prototype printed parts, at least not any more than any other in development mold/print, as they are likely just now producing the set hence the pre order. I doubt they mass produced both versions and just decided to toss the losing print.

Why does the “World Champions” printed tile start in 1974? There seems to be enough space to include winners at least since 1950 (post WW2), if not all the way since the beginning in 1930

I imagine that it’s because this trophy didn’t exist until 1974, and the previous winners are only attached to the older (and very stolen/missing, although that’s unrelated to it no longer being in use) trophy.

This, and all other FIFA related products, are easy passes to me. I don't want any of my money to end up in the pockets of any FIFA people.

Infantino and his cronies ruined this World Cup from start to finish, from the overblown setup to the rigged finale, to the Trump revokes red card scandal in between. This has been the worst World Cup in history, and particularly not with a winner worthy of the title. Just compare the final yesterday with the match for third place a day earlier. THAT was football at its finest. The final yesterday was a perfect example for how a match shouldn't be. Nothing attractive about how they played, which is hardly surprising, given that it was played by two teams who only reached the final because of highly questionable decisions by the referee teams during the matches leading up to this.
Rewatch those matches and see for yourselves how this was the finale FIFA had planned from the get go. The two most marketable teams from their respective continents. The most money to be made. The least goals. But who cares about goals and fun to watch matches when it's all about money, and only money.

And don't get me started about that gratuitous and totally stupid half-time show. Is this supposed to be the Superbowl or what?
American football may need additional spectacle to spice things up, proper football doesn't. Granted yesterday's match was no advertisement for the sport, but still.

It's just two printed tiles. Likely just a PDF file or other print format for each. They don't look as if they needed more than five minutes design work. Why should there even be other versions other than maybe one for Argentina. This doesn't look like something that would need weeks of preparation, or even just days.

Honestly, I only knew that because I was grumpily looking up the current trophy earlier and went down a bit of a wikipedia rabbit hole.

Sort of wish they’d kept the three wins and you keep it rule. We’d be on the fourth trophy look and that would be much more interesting! Always liked the Olympic medals being a new design each time.

Well done LEGO for trying to cash in, FIFA would be proud. However, I reckon keeping the minifigure but giving it a Spain kit printing would have helped sell this set.

I do agree with first part about corrupted fifa and ugliness of usa world cup but not the rest. Also pathetic hard trying to be on on stage by trump.

Spain won it and deserved that is fact without any controversy. Match was different than 3rd place match because it was higher risk, so everyone can understand that there are no 10 goals in final.
- Was final boring? Yes.
- Did referee do a good job? No, he should be banned from any important games in future.
- Were Spain better than France. Yes.
- Were Argentina better than England. Definitely yes.

Anyway... agree with the sentiment that this should've been a parts pack but Lego is in the business of making money. I'm surprised the additional winners list disc piece isn't a sticker.

Having won 5 titles, I was sad that Brazil didn't win. But I was quite satisfied to seeing Argentina lose yesterday. Congrats Spain!

Yes, and once World Cup fever dies out (very quickly) I'd imagine most of the other sets will hit deep discounts from other retailers, as despite footballs popularity in general, international football is not exactly an evergreen theme.

France has a much bigger superstar player though, with Mbappe, not to mention several of the best known attackers, so I would give the edge to France."

Yeah, there's no way Spain is the most marketable European team. They were, however, clear and away, the most deserving team in this year's tournament. They conceded a single goal in 8 matches and did so without playing cynically. They did it by dominating the midfield and controlling possession. They also created a ton of quality chances. Finishing could have been better yesterday, but otherwise they were unquestionably the best team of the tournament. They easily bested France in the Semi-Final.

Argentina, on the other hand, played extremely cynically, fouled frequently including several rather dirty challenges, didn't have a single shot until well into added extra time, and basically survived the tournament getting to the final on the shoulders of Messi and the officiating.

The set is worth its price in gold pieces, and this goes for several recent sets with metallic gold parts, this trophy and the Mona Lisa.

325 pieces in metallic gold and 1040 pieces in pearl gold. The cheapest metallic gold pieces average BL market value or exact PaB price is 0,14€ and for pearl gold it is about 0,07€. Many of the pearl and metallic gold pieces included are worth more than that (the only exception really are 1x1 square plates or tiles) but using these values as stand-ins comes out to a minimum worth of 118€, but in reality noticeably more than that, for just 48% of the contents of the set. The pieces in basic colors, chrome trophy and minifigure are 52% of the sets contents and at current discount prices of about 120€ they basically end up being free on top of getting a good deal for the gold pieces.

The entire contents of the regular Trophy set are worth 263€ according to my calculations using BL averages and PaB prices.
According to Rebrickables averages that tend to be far higher due to only using Bricklink for price data the set is 561€ without the minifigure and spare parts.

Thank you for the comment reminding me to calculate that a bit more thoroughly, I made rough calculations before because most of the pieces were not on PaB at launch but even then I noticed that the set would offer the best prices for every piece when discounted by a few percent. Now PaB has finally added nearly all the pieces to confirm my hunch.

The same also goes for the Mona Lisa if you can still find it at discounts. The metallic gold pieces alone would be about 42€. Most of the metallic gold pieces in this set are actually cheaper on Bricklink than Pick-a-Brick. Using PaB prices for the metallic gold pieces they alone are worth more than 55€ while the set routinely got discounted down to 60€ or less. Mona Lisa is an even better set to get for parts in my opinion since the many brownish shades are perfect for terrain in any theme, and the metallic parts make up a flat tiled surface.

In wonder how many people would stay true to their Fifa boycott if they were to realize how great the trophy is as a parts pack for MOCs and how little of the proceeds go to the licenseholder while the vast majority still lies at LEGO and their employees. Not that I think dubious corporations should get money, but the amounts we are talking about here that actually go to Fifa would be 15% of a likely 95€ wholesalepriced item, so just 14,4€ to FIFA, and in case of Harry Potter it would be far far less since it just lies with Rowling, not WB. Supposing she donates a third of everything she earns, a hypothetical fans 2000€ Harry Potter LEGO collection purchased solely from the 2018-present theme would have given her 22 to 55€ in royalties to handle personally, of which 7 to 18€ would have been used for donations over a 9 year period. That would be 81 cents to 2,11€ per year of a donation.

Or alternatively, 2 to 7,5€ per 199,99€ Hogwarts set that one buys goes to her which would be 66 cents to 2,48€ for donations. And since not every single donation she does goes to entirely bad causes the hypothetical demon does not even get the full 66 cents to buy himself the fraction of a coffee with, per year or so.
