Star Wars Advent Calendar Review - Day 22

Posted by ,

At last we have reached the final few days, and the first of the gifts we have all been waiting for! This festively attired Astromech Droid is a superb addition to one's minifigure collection as although he is not particularly useful, he has real character and charm in my opinion.

The cylindrical body component is printed with the panels seen on any Astromech Droid in the Star Wars saga and there is substantial detail here which is very impressive. This is the first dark green Astromech body we have seen and it is always nice to get a new colour for these as they add some variety to a MOC as background characters.

The cone-like head is unlike any previous LEGO Astromech Droid we have seen, but is decorated with an attractive selection of lights, tinsel and baubles around his monocular eye. A trans-clear and trans-yellow finial completes the droid and this looks excellent as a Star Wars update of the traditional star atop the Christmas tree. As it is, this is a brilliant minifigure even if it only really has any use as a novelty item.

However, it gets even better. Some of you may recall 75032 X-Wing Fighter from the Microfighters range, which included an R2 unit dome as well as Theron Nett minifigure. Of the few complaints people had concerning this set the main one was the lack of a body for the Astromech Droid; but after almost a year that has finally been rectified today.

Day 22

The dark green body of today's droid matches the head of the droid in 75032 perfectly and if you put them together, you end up with an accurate representation of R2-X2! This droid participated in the Battle of Yavin on board Red 10 and stood beside R2-D2 in the battle plan meeting beforehand, so although he is obscure he does put in an appearance.

Overall - 5 - A fun minifigure with some great detail, which is even better for its usefulness to form R2-X2!

By in United States,

The Astromechs are my favorite minifigs, so this is a great day for me. Also, I noticed that the star on his (or her idk) head looks kinda like a holocron. :)

By in United Kingdom,

We've got two of these in our house. One will definitely be converted to R2-X2 :-)

Him and the other exclusive almost make me wish I spent $40 on two mini figures... almost.

By in Norway,

That was a nice one. I think the droid is supposed to be a Star Wars version of a tree with the cone. I wish I had started to look for a calendar a bit earlier.

Aww no, now I want this! I've got the microfighter, and if he is actually a proper character from the original films - I NEED HIM!!!! :P

This is pretty much the main reason I bought this set.

YES! It does work as R2-X2! Totally getting this fig ASAP. Might even get the whole advent if I can!
I agree , this is probably the best thing in this years calendar.

Not only do you get R2-X2 when you combine the parts, but the helmet decals on the X-wing pilot in the micro fighter identifies him as Theron Net - the guy who had R2-X2 in his x-wing buring the Battle of Yavin. I'm sure you're aware of that, but it wasn't spelled out above. For me that's the coolest thing about this calendar and the main reason I got it and the microfighter x-wing.

Fun fact: R2-X2's color changes depending on appearance. Sometimes he's Dark Green, sometimes he's black.

YES! I have that minifighter! :D this makes me very happy.

By in United States,

Can we please call this figure R2-tree 2
:-)

By in United States,

Maybe we should call this figure TR-33, if that's even a valid designation for an astromech droid.

By in Australia,

This is the biggest reason I am disappointed I couldn't get the calendar this year. So clever how it connects with the microfighter set!

By in United Kingdom,

I don't collect Star Wars, so I'm not sure how this fits in with other sets or if it does at all.

But I do know that it would look good in my Christmas City Main Street! :P

The best thing in the calendar. Easily.

Gutted, I got a duplicate snowspeeder pilot! Not happy!

@sabazadeh

You should be able to request the figure from customer service online, they're always very helpful.

@Sabazadeh: Albus is right - they'll be more than happy to send one out to you. :-)

By in Spain,

I'm here thinking how they will make the new BB-8 droid from Episode 7. The droid head is pretty simple, but how to construct a spherical body with current pieces?

@kyrodes: I made a design using a 1x1 brick with four studs on all sides (4733) and putting two 2x2 satellites (4740) on two sides, then taking two 1x1 tiles (3070) and putting one on the front and one on the back, and topping it off by taking two 1x1 plates (3024) and putting one on top and one on the bottom. And then attach the 2x2 dome on top and viola! The unofficial BB-8!
