Well, I'm sure that Tumblr's lighting up about now- official Dr. Who Lego! (Personally, I'm ambivalent.) Wall-E is great though, and an excellent brand fit.
Wall-E is okay, but Dr. WHo and BBT is really not about building anymore. Find a TVshow with huge fanbase, print minifig, job done go home... :/
I honestly couldn't have hoped for a better result. I am a huge Doctor Who fan (although haven't been very keen on several recent episodes) and Wall-E is probably my favourite animated film of all time.
As a result, I'm pretty excited!
I love the Dr. Who decision! The thing mebalna mentioned: If this is a successful business model, then TLG would be fool not to do it :)
It's a little disheartening that the Hubble didn't make it in, I know Lego Cuusoo/Ideas has done the Mars Rover and the HAYABUSA, but i guess they didn't want another satellite when the other options offered more play-ability. Placing bets on the Piano or the Marble Maze. Though i wouldn't be opposed to the Museum either!
Love the Wall-E - is't cute, and the right sort of 'fit' for Ideas.
Shame ghostbusters wasn't given a future - but good news for DW fans - not one myself, but it's sure to be very popular indeed.
Thought we might have had an update on TBBT though.
Im not a fan of DW
I'm stoked about Wall-E! However, my heart was hoping that Cavegod's AT-AT will get the nod but my head tells me it will be not be a viable price point for Lego.
Great to see that LEGO is continuing to defy expectations on what is and isn't possible from a review. Two sets again!
Still no big ones or pre-established IP, but personally I think that is a matter of time.
Is there a teaser for the Star Wars large figure sets at 1:18?
I see an Imperial Probe Droid, Watoo(?) and that medical droid with all the arms.
I just want Minas Tirith...
Doctor Who AND Wall-E? This just made my day :D
Two amazing builds which I cannot wait for! Probably going to pick up two DW sets :-) A shame about the other sets, but as Andrew2243 said about the UCS AT-AT, I think they were simply too large and would work out too expensive for mass sales
They do look amazing. The Ghostbusters HQ is a challenge as I'm building that exact set at the moment following Sergio's instructions. It's got more than 5,000 pieces. I started it in October and I've not even finished the ground floor yet! Still waiting on more info of the Big Bang Theory set though. They do seem to be dragging their feet a little about it
Woohoo!!!! Great news on both fronts. I would have been really surprised if Wall-E didn't pass review, and I'm really excited for the Dr. Who set. I wonder which Doctors will be included?
Exactly what I expected, although the Star Wars Lightsabers would have been cool. I cannot wait to see what the final products look like...
At least Lego is saving me some money.
These are great and I'm happy for both, but whatever happened to the Big Bang set? It was approved, then nothing...
Hot dog. Those are both excellent projects. I'm not a resident of Whoville, or whatever it is fans call themselves, but I have noticed a large number of Dr. Who inspired builds at all the events I've been to. So looks like AFOLs everywhere will be ecstatic!
Personally I had my fingers crossed for the lightsabers. But that's just me being lazy. I could easily build my own if I really wanted them.
Cue the trolls who will complain the company never listens to fans. I know you're still out there.
Lego... Doctor.... Who..... I can't wait!!! We are finally getting Lego Doctor Who, everybody!
Well what I thought was interesting is how already we have a few of the 3rd review list on the way... Helicarrier... done, Jurrasic Park... done.
Disappointed to see Doctor Who being chosen. It seems TLG is more interested in making money with a large fan base. I expect to see more of the ideas reviewed this session show up as the UCS Helicarrier did, not as part of the Ideas sets. I am glad to see Wall-E though. This is a more unique idea than the others suggested.
I can't wait to pick up Wall-E! It's such a great model and looks perfect in LEGO form. Not a fan of Dr. Who so I'm disappointed it was the second set chosen but I'm happy for the fans of the show. I think it's a positive that TLG is listening to their fans and trying to satisfy large groups of fans. Hopefully that bodes well for Minas Tirith.
Wall-E is a definite for me. I don't really care about Dr. Who, but nice for those who do.
With the next review phase, I really don't know. I guess it's relatively safe to say it won't be the Helicarrier. Other than that there's no clear pick for me. Maybe we'll have a round where nothing gets chosen? Though the piano doesn't look like a terrible risk for TLC to me...
I don't watch Doctor Who, so I don't care all that much; however, WALL-E is gonna be pretty great!
I'm happy that they're making WallE and Dr. Who, but I really wanted the Invisible Hand- there hasn't been a single LEGO Separatist capital ship set!
The tardis build is lovely. I think it's going to make a great set. And WALL-E is a hit here :)
Can't really see any of those passing the next review... Has anything been held over from previous reviews that we're still waiting on?
I really hope Minas Tirith get chosen in the next review >_< LEGO LotR (not the Hobbit) ended too soon imo
@theBrickBlogger - I believe Big Bang Theory is in the group that will be reviewed after this next one.
Given that all Creator-sized buildings have been rejected, LEGO really should just put a piece-count limit on all Ideas projects. The line is firmly entrenched in the $30-60 price point, so why bother allowing enormous buildings and ships that have no real shot of ever being selected? It's fine if that's how LEGO wants to handle Ideas, but at least let everyone know up front and save them the time and frustration.
Well, that certainly defies their previous announcement that the first project of a particular topic is the one to be considered. I'm guessing they just said that with the Ghostbusters car because it conveniently prevented them from explaining why they went with the one they liked over the other.
But now with Dr. Who, no explanation. I remember warning glenbricker that his proposal was not a single "set idea", but I thought it got edited up to shape before reaching 10,000. I'm curious to know why one won over the other.
While I'd like to see fewer licensed projects, I like the Dr. Who one. Wall-E I'm sort of neutral on. HST is a major disappointment. The rest were pretty predictable (mostly too big). But HST seemed like a good natural fit. Next around it seems clear the only the piano and labyrinth are the only two that really stand any chance. The labyrinth is a problem because the design is clear based on Brio's.
Excited to see the results: I'll be getting both.
Don't know why people get excited, disappointed, or ever think an existing license like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or Super Hero set will ever pass Lego Ideas. Those already exist in their main catalog. They honestly should just not allow ideas for existing Lego themes - it would save a lot of clutter.
I would really like to see more non-licensed themes to make it. I will buy these on principal only.
Wall-E did look like one of the most likely projects to pass ever with a nice size and a fit with Disney already and it is the perfect one off set too.
Someone on eurobricks not long ago said we will be getting all 13 doctors but that might mean we don't get any bad guys and what happens when doctor 14 comes along, it will be incomplete.
Love WALL-E ... curious how Doctor Who will turn out. Love the show, so if it's nice set with some interesting minifigs I might be tempted to buy it :)
Here's hoping Doctor Who ends up like Minecraft and we get a few waves of sets. There's a long history there and a lot off material to work with (like an IP-based version of the Time Cruisers theme)
Least shocking news ever. Everyone knew Doctor Who was coming, and the only realistic sets in review were Wall-e and Hubble.
Not a fan of the Doctor Who Ideas winning, I mean, we probably wont get a set based off the Lego Ideas anyways, its just Lego deciding to do a licensed theme again. Why should someone on Lego Ideas get paid a percentage of the profits for basically suggesting a licensed theme? ¬_¬
As for next round, seems its going to be either the maze or the piano. I'm not really a fan of either, but they are the only two non-massive sets.
So sad that the Invisible Hand is denied, but maybe that means that we may get something in the near future.
Well I called Doctor Who when the Scooby Doo Lego rumours started as Character Builder had the rights to both for construction toys and I'm assuming they lapsed and it made this viable. Can't wait to see what form the final set takes - beyond including some form of Tardis, I'm intrigued which Doctor(s), companions and villains are included. Hardcore fans will have their favourites but I would suggest the current Doctor and Clara are most likely.
WALL.E was a nailed-on definite and should be left pretty much alone as far as design is concerned, it looks great. I will be buying both these sets!
"I would suggest the current Doctor and Clara are most likely."
I pray we don't get them. Neither has had a large impact in the show yet and Clara has had two seasons to do so. Clara is so bland a character that she's more of a stain on the show than something that should be given a figure representation and remembered.
@CCC - Thanks for the correction. You're right. I had completely forgotten that BBT was already reviewed and selected; for some reason I thought its review was still upcoming. I'd edit or delete my original post if I could.
Modok said "Given that all Creator-sized buildings have been rejected, LEGO really should just put a piece-count limit on all Ideas projects. And I totally agree, if your not going to allow the larger projects to ever be made, put a cap so that builders know the limits of what they can submit.
Honestly - I'm not a fan of sets based on licensed minifigs (like Dr Who, BBT etc.). Especially - I don't think that this kind of sets is good for Ideas project.
It's actually a smart marketing tool for TLG to continue to allow large projects even if they will not be made into Ideas sets as it's a good tool to guage interest in different themes. Once the builder submits to Ideas TLG holds the rights to that set so if they make something similar from their own design studio there is no dispute over who has the rights i.e. hellicarrier.
Still looking at the helicarrier ? Even though Lego have their own ? How odd...
Once again I'll be staying up past midnight on release day only to see Shop @Home melt under the load.
I was hoping for Wall-e, and it does make a good fit for Ideas. Wall-e was never a merchandising monster, a limited run for the dedicated fans doesn't leave TLG with a bunch of unsold sets.
A Dr Who set lets TLG do a test run to see if there are enough FOL/Whovian crossovers to support a wave of sets.
On big sets, Ideas is still new enough that TLG may still be figuring out the limits. It's always possible that TLG may look at a 5000-piece Ideas submission and say, "That's great. Let's do it in a 1000-2000 piece version."
I like the WALL-E and it's no surprise it got through - just the right size, recognisable, involves building instead of just putting some minifigure parts together and there's already a Disney relationship.
As for models where LEGO already has existing themes - I've no idea why people submit them or vote for them - they'll never pass review. Shame, as I like the lightsabers.
As for the next review, it's just a hunch, but the Hellicarrier and Jurassic models won't see the light of day (wonder why?!)
My big fear is that the Doctor Who set will be another Minecraft disaster.
Wall-E was a good choice. That's a nice little set.
I would have liked to see the lightsabers too, or at least one of them. Denying that one really pushes the argument that they should put out a notice that no Ideas sets should be based on current licenses.
Blimey! Dis is fantastic! Run!
Once again I'm disappointed... -_-
I've got a feeling that most people supporting big models have completely unrealistic ideas about the price they would come out at, and are clicking that they'd like to pay $50-$99 for what would sensibly have to be a $200 set. Unless people are willing to say they'll pay for them, they're not going to happen.
I'm still hoping that the Natural History Museum makes it through review as the first big set. I can see why large licenced projects connected to Superheroes or another IP might be a bad fit for Ideas, but this real building is a perfect fit for both the modulars line and the RI!
While I'm sorry not to get a Hubble telescope, I love Wall-E and think the choice of Dr Who project means I can have one or more of "my" doctors while allowing for post-revival one too--a win-win in my book! So I'm a happy camper....
Do lego share with the designers why a set was rejected? Its incredibly annoying when they don't say why it failed review. How are the designers or other designers of similar sets supposed to know how to pass review if lego are so secretive about it? Were these sets too big? Too similar to existing sets? Conflict with future product plans? Shouldn't answers to these be placed on the ideas site guidelines?
The issues with Doctor Who sets are the following;
- Other than the Tardis their is no iconic set that would be recognisable to new and old fans
- Other than the Doctor's, the companions are difficult to choose from. K9 seems the most likely option, but what human/alien companions would you choose
- Other than some popular villains like the Cybermen and Daleks... their are almost no marketable villains that are recognisable to old and new fans. I know the Weeping Angels may be included, but they are not as iconic.
Personally I'm just going to pick up some of the figures IF anything.
I have yet to watch wall e or Dr who, do I can't say I'm excited. But I may end up picking up the sets just because kids love robots and I love New licensed figure prints. Same reason I'll buy bbt, even though I haven't seen that show either.
I will wait to see prices and pictures though.
The sets they decided to go with are nice... I'm more interested in what it was about some of the other sets that meant they were no good. The X-Mansion and Wayne Manor seemed to fit pretty well with the existing sets - I'm disappointed they're not being made.
Essentially, I'd like them to give more feedback on why sets were rejected - otherwise Lego Ideas is going to keep throwing up the same kind of projects again and again and they're all going to get rejected.
So far the pattern is go small or don't bother - which is disappointing.
As a huge fan of Doctor Who, who was left with those awful character buildings sets, I am so pleased about Lego Doctor Who!, Lots of people on here are describing it as a cash grab, but I honestly think since it's a 52 year old british icon of television it definitely deserves a proper Lego tie!
As for Wall-e, that was one of my favorite films and i'm really surprised lego haven't done it before since they had the disney licence, I think it's an excellent choice, in comparison to say another ghost busters set, and I think the fans will be pleased that the design by a pixar employee was chosen.
I'm not too fussed about the previous result, including Lego Big Bang Theory, but these two I will definitely get hold of
Whew! At first I thought that Minas Tirith was in this review, and that it didn't make it!
Wall-E looks great, but I can't say I'm a fan of Doctor Who.
Waiting for the spring review!
WALL-E? Yeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on Lego, you can't deny a UCS AT-AT forever.... please, no? Its not like star Wars is your best selling theme right now, and could use some fresh ideas, such as the invisible hand or light saber set. Its not like you could make the AT-AT UCS slightly affordable....
To sum this up:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0YIJQ1jgEI
I worry about ppl getting burned out on IDEAS, how many times can they vote for a big set and get disappointed by LEGO before they start to get turned away from the whole process. I do agree that maybe a bit of feedback on projects that didn't make it maybe help projects in the future
I do like the 2 that were chosen and as long as finished product is as good a ghostbusters and exo they def going to buy but like many I would have liked to see the lightsabers chosen as they seem to be something a wee bit different. Looking at next lot it hard not to be a pessimist and say looking at past decisions there really only 2 contenders Maze and Piano.
I'm really hoping for the Jurassic Park set, but I'm doubting that will be made since we're already getting the Jurassic World sets. I guess this Jurassic Park set would tie in with the video game (where the game will cover all 4 movies), so it is possible. I'd love Minas Tirith too, but I think that set's too big and the LOTR theme has passed. I'm of the camp that prefers the licensed sets to non-licensed sets, so I'm happy with this review, but think the next one will be non-licensed sets only (and no Jurassic Park or LOTR).
@ curious - LEGO used to give a reason why projects were rejected, albeit a non-detailed one (e.g., "brand fit" or "conflict with an existing license"). They stopped giving reasons a couple years ago, I believe. It's probably for the best, because the reasons generated more questions than they answered.
I'm going to get that Doctor Who set!
Fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
disappointed that Wayne manor and the X Men set didn't make it, but not surprised.
I think this was the best and most reasonably expected possible outcome. Was-E was the front runner for this review period. It's a cute very Lego ish build. The fact that it was designed by one of the Pixar guys to help illustrate and explain the character makes it a no brainer winner. I'm happy to see Dr. Who in there. There was never any chance of those huge SW sets. Cave gods while amazing is about 3x the size of a reasonable UCS, and it has to already be in the "to do" queu. The Invisible hand was just an unrealistic sized set of a subject similar to one TLG had to blow out on 50% discount to get rid of, last year. The business case for it was "hell no".
Doctor Who Lego. Happy days
Collectible minifigure series and ultimate collector's series Dalek now, please, Lego :)
I saw Dr. Who coming a mile away, and the same for WALL-E, but an official LEGO WALL-E? AWESOME.
Anything get carried over to the next review?
No Hubble? Well I guess that's one less expense for the year.
I suppose I'm happy for those who wanted these two but I have no desire to buy either.
Say, had anyone else noticed the really tiny little Wall-E toy in the Creator Toy Shop set, 31036? I only noticed it looking at the box the other day, I wonder if it was a precursor to this announcement.
And I wonder if I had noticed it earlier if any betting shops would have taken the bet, I could have won some easy money! :P
Love the WALL-E, ive never seen a single Dr. Who episode but I know it will have a HUGE following...
Im 100% for sure getting a few for investment purposes!
Side Note:
anyone else noticed in the video 1:19-1:20 they have a big display showing many "UCS" sets?? Did you also notice they had a Watto bust kinda similar to the darth maul? also a massive imerpial probe droid, as well as that "doctor robot" and even a massive tie fighter that looks to be what might be this coming up UCS tie fighter?
I am wondering if we will ever see a set pass the review that is based off of a existing license or if they are letting them run through the process just to keep people interested...
Very happy this Wall-E set is happening.. That is an awesome design...
I expect the Piano to pass the next review and hopefully some type of Goonie set... I think the Marble Maze has a shot as well...
Excited for the both the announced projects.
But I feel kinda disappointed that despite so many projects reaching 10,000 in this period, LEGO only produces ONE. (Doctor Who was from the last period, which now has 3 successful projects).
Seeing that LEGO Ideas is gaining so much attention, and more projects are reaching 10,000 every period, LEGO should start making more/bigger Ideas sets.
Very happy with the results, love Walle and will definitely buy him when the set comes out, plus I'm happy we will see Dr Who in Lego form too.
I am new to the Lego Ideas and was wondering when these would be released? Need to start saving for Doctor Who!!!
I wanted his Wall-E design ever since I first saw it (which must've been several years back) so I'm really thrilled it'll finally be released.
They are actually going to go through the motions of reviewing the Helicarrier or Jurassic Park sets?
@Paul Boratko, as they have said in the past, existing licenses are much much more complicated and have more hurdles to overcome than a clean 1 shot license for Ideas. While likely not impossible they will have to be something that is just right. That is not already somewhere on the table from the licensing and IP group. That is what the license owner likes and wishes now. That has not previously been done by Lego, etc.
^^^ I thought that they had also mentioned in the past that they didn't want models already based off of existing licenses..?
Wall-E is a must-have!!! I'm kinda glad I have never been a huge Dr. Who fan, so I'll get a break there!
People are asking why anyone should bother with big, expensive sets on Ideas, but I suspect it probably still does have some benefit. It guarantees that the appropriate people in TLG will find out about a particular concept for a LEGO set. I've seen people suggest concepts for sets or themes on LEGO's own forum, but these almost always get drowned out by the stupid little kids spamming the forum with inane chit-chat. Ideas is currently the best route for serious suggestions.
To be honest, I’m happy for Dr Who fans, but in this case a LEGO DW set is definitely not a surprise at all, after that unfairly official “hint”.
The thing we should notice is that two projects complete like the last time GB projects did. Unlike GB, even though there could be multiple versions/generations for the DW franchise, LEGO might still choose to make one only at once because of marketing risks.
As for the rejected ones, I’m sad but not surprised to see SH mansions rejected. There is a chance for official ones if TLG already plan it now.Speaking of GB, the real problem, the office gets rejected and there is no second chance like existed LEGO licenses have. Also, it's the second time that another project of used Ideas licnses get rejected, after the train from BTTF. This could mean a misfortune for other growing DW projects who want to have the second place for LEGO DW set. I believe that LEGO should be able to redesign the office into a part of the Creator Modular series, which also pleases normal FOLs.
Wall-E is rather a surprise for me. I love him for sure, but it's very illogical for LEGO and Disney because they neglect the other more popular movie franchise this year (Sleeping Beauty and Big Hero 6). Neglecting that “Ideas-oriented licenses couldn’t get multiple sets” issue, I also wish to see several minifigure scale sets base on that film.
Let's hope they produce enough DW sets to satisfy demand. Not go the way of the Mars Rover, i.e. Shop @Home only, sold out in 5 minutes.
Disappointed in lego they should make xmansion and a.a.w.m, it is a huge lego set they could split it up. Secation by section then they join together.
Maybe its just me , but is the sound in the video dubbed into english ?
I think whats fascinating with the Dr Who Set is that the show focusses on characters more than scenery or big spaceships so any future sets I guess will have a wide range of minifigs - be it the many Doctors and assistants or monsters - but creating a memorable setting apart from the Tardis will be a challenge - though the Dalek ships have stuck to a set style for a while now.
Honestly I'm not a fan of any of these two sets...but I'm happy for all the Doctor Who fans.
@mkrey - I don't suspect LEGO will really "review" those two, but I understand not wanting to announce already that they're dead on arrival. It makes more sense to just announce the results in a group rather than singling out a couple as hopeless.
As for Dr. Who and Wall-E, LEGO clearly made the splash it was hoping for. I saw articles on the Ideas announcement all over the web yesterday. The demand for these (especially Dr. Who) will be staggering. Even if you don't like the decision, it's encouraging that these sets have spread that far into the mainstream and will generate many new LEGO fans.
Huw--can you please not reveal who the winners are . . . it makes watching the video significantly less fun. Just a suggestion.
I jumped into Cuusoo/Ideas at the Minecraft Micro World and continued my collection all the way through the birds set just recently and sadly, it may be my last. The licensed BTTF and Ecto-1 sets are results of iconic, far-reaching cultural phenomena. I don't see BBT , WALL-E, or DW as iconic or reaching a substantial audience. I'm disappointed.
I see a HUGE amount of Google+ posts about the Doctor Who set. This is going to be a huge sucsess..
ChiefCubby, you're completely out of touch if you think Ghostbusters is an "iconic, far-reaching cultural phenomenon" but Doctor Who isn't. Doctor Who has been going for 51 years and is still tremendously popular in UK and Australia; Ghostbusters is something that most of today's young people probably haven't watched. I watched it once (when I was about 10 I think) and didn't think much of it. It wasn't scary enough to be a horror film and not funny enough to be a comedy; it was just weird, childish and not particularly entertaining.
"It wasn't scary enough to be a horror film and not funny enough to be a comedy; it was just weird, childish and not particularly entertaining."
If you check the overall reviews, you are definitely in the minority... I remember seeing Ghostbusters in the theater when I was a kid and the audience was laughing throughout the entire movie... People went back to see it over and over again....
It didn't matter if kids seen it in the theaters because most watched the cartoons that came later on...
97% http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ghostbusters/
7.8 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087332/?ref_=nv_sr_5
Doctor Who may be popular in the UK, but to be honest, I don't personally know anyone that even watches it here in the states... I think it is on Netflix now...
I am sure that it will still sell very well though regardless... I have always read good things about it...
Wall-e awesome!!!!
Huey1, you're forgetting that the bulk of the world's cultural phenomena come from the US. UK and Australia may produce TV shows and movies that are popular in their own cultures, but those productions don't translate to the rest of the world. No disrespect meant, but it's the truth.
There are a good few Dr Who fans in central North Carolina, USA, where it was shown on public television for decades before BBC America existed. I'm sure the Ideas set will be reasonably popular here, if not the blockbuster it should be in Britain!
