Grand Prix of all Builds -- LEGO Speed Champions arrive!
Posted by Huw,
LEGO UK's PR agency has issued a press release about the Speed Champions sets that are officially released on Sunday. There's nothing new in it but I thought I'd post it here anyway. Our reviews of the sets will continue next week.
Build Your Own Legendary Cars With LEGO Speed Champions Sets!
London, - 1st March 2015. Available from 1st March 2015, LEGO Speed Champions sets will ensure lots of racing action and squealing tyres in homes across the UK. The new
vehicle series was designed by the LEGO Group in close collaboration with Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche. The result is seven LEGO sets: the Scuderia Ferrari truck with the F14 T racing car, a McLaren Mercedes pit stop, a Porsche set with a start and finish line as well as four vehicle sets with GT and Road Cars – including the LaFerrari, a Ferrari 458 Italia GT2, the McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder. The many authentic details on these legendary cars make them thrilling to play with for children and adults alike.
F14 T & Scuderia Ferrari Truck (#75913; £79.99)
With the new LEGO Speed Champions sets, builders of all ages and with fuel in their veins can play out their favourite racing scenes at home. The fully-equipped Scuderia Ferrari Truck features many surprising functions – for instance the cabin’s roof, the bed and the sides can be opened up. This makes it easy for small hands to access all areas. Inside the truck, the F14 T is ready for play time. It has an exchangeable front and spare tyres as well as a lowered chassis, and can be unloaded via a push function down the truck’s tailgate. Details such as the Ferrari emblems on the minifigures’ racing overalls and realistic LEGO accessories like a scooter, a lap-time board and two tool chests make the set an exciting LEGO car adventure for children ages eight and up.
McLaren Mercedes Pit Stop (#75911; £29.99)
Team spirit is demanded at the McLaren Mercedes Pit Stop that includes the McLaren Mercedes MP4-29 – everyone is allowed to help. In just a few steps, the pit can be transformed into a workshop and is equipped with a fuel pump, computer console, tools and a spare nose – so young mechanics can make sure the LEGO model of the McLaren Mercedes MP4-29 is quickly fit for the next round. With a launch function children can push the cars back on the race track. The many details also make for realistic playing for car fans in all ages. For instance, the car has freely accessible wheels and the minifigures’ overalls feature the McLaren emblems. A timing board and a winner’s gold cup for the fastest driver round off the equipment included.
Porsche 911 GT Finish Line (#75912; £39.99)
Taking on opponents, comparing best times and being first at the finish line – that’s what makes a race so exciting. With the Porsche 911 GT Finish Line, seven to 14-year-olds can build their favourite cars in their room and race against one another. The play set includes a start and finish line with start lights that children can switch from red to green to start the race. The two Porsche vehicles included, the 911 RSR and the 911 GT3R Hybrid in white and orange, have removable windscreens, a driver’s cockpit and special rims. A minifigure camera woman for capturing exciting race situations and a race marshal with a checkered flag complete the set. These extras ensure hours of LEGO building and playing fun. The Porsche emblems can be seen on both minifigure drivers’ overalls. Furthermore, a winner’s podium, which also includes trophies for the winners, features a function that hoists country flags – eight different ones are included - during the awards ceremony for the next
LEGO Speed Champions winner.
Four car sets featuring Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche
Racing car fans will be excited to get these high-speed sets: the four LEGO models have been designed in line with their big role models Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche – and they let the hearts of children beat faster, as well as those of collectors, building and car fans alike. LaFerrari (#75899; £12.99) stands out with details of the legendary hybrid sports car and a traffic light. The 458 Italia GT2 (#75908; £12.99) also comes from the house of Ferrari and features many details of the original racing car and a trophy. McLaren sends its McLaren P1 (#75909; £12.99) hypercar into the race, including traffic cones and a kerbstone for the racing track. The LEGO version of the hybrid super sports car Porsche 918 Spyder (#75910; £12.99) comes with two exchangeable rim sets, a finish line flag and a kerbstone. All LEGO Speed Champions vehicles have removable windscreens, enabling children to easily place the minifigures into the cockpit.
Now just one question remains: Who will be the Speed Champion in 2015?

Saw all these at Toys R Us in the US, but I'm not sure why they are bothering to sell them here. They look great for what they are, but I imagine they will sell about as well as NFL sets would in Denmark. Remember how great the Cars sets sold? Yeah, exactly. I bought like five or six of that Grand Prix set at insane knockdown prices after it collected dust on the shelves for 18 months plus...even though it's a great looking set. And that had race cars that Americans had actually heard of, even if they were cartoon race cars. Also, see Speed Racer. If blockbuster movies can't move race car sets here in the states, a sport nobody here watches or follows isn't going to get it done. So I expect to get these Speed Champions all on big discounts later this year. Obviously TLG differentiates product lineup by market to a certain degree, so I can't see why they denied us the last Chima constraction wave and yet is sending us these.
I don't like the new sets. If I was still a kid I wouldn't like them either. The cars aren't really that accurate to the real life ones - if it was up to me I would use combined technic and system pieces for a bigger, more accurate sets. The pit lane should have a garage. Only the Ferrari truck appeals to me at all, but it's just fine. It should include another f1 car for playability.
I agree with previous posters, I don't see the attraction of these sets. Regards OP, I thought F1 was popular in the States, just not as popular as Nascar (which despite being British I also prefer).
Personally I think they're great. They're massively 'playable' and I would look great on display. I don't think a kid is going to be nitpicking that the curves are correct. At a good price point as well, I'll be looking to put one on my want list.
I like the sets. Maybe they're not accurate but they give plenty of new parts and i love the wheels. I do think they're too expensive though and i doubt i'll get a full set for this price.
Will LEGO make Lamborghinis?
@darth2701 they had 2 lambos once (8169 8214).
Love these sets!
I'm hoping the F40 out soon is similar in size/detail as 8169
Love the F1 sets but they should have given Jenson his pink helmet!
I don't understand why everyone is hating on these new space sets. I think they look great!
Ferrari Truck looks cool. I would buy on sale only. its currently marked up at toysrus for 119
While I agree with a lot of posters that these sets will likely not do well here in the United States, I myself like the theme idea. If they had a F1 Sauber set, I would probably buy it. Maybe they will extend the series to include famous historical cars in racing. Would love to see like the old 1952 Ferrari Tipo or the Mazda 787B that won Le Mans done in Lego. The 787B would look fantastic with those colors.
They were all in my local toys r us in Norwich UK as well as all the new pirates sets. Was hoping the avengers sets would be there too. But no sign
@eviltwin21 I bought the Ferrari truck at toys r us and on the shelf the retail was 119 but when they rang me up it was only 100.
LEGO.com just came out with the product page for speed champions, although surprisingly they didn't release it as a teaser site first
All the new sets are now available at Dreamland in Belgium; Elves, Star Wars, Speed Champions, City, etc. Also, many of the new Star Wars sets are 3 for 2 at Carrefour.
McLaren *Mercedes*?
D'oh!
