My visit to The LEGO House, Billund
Posted by Huw,
It's been a very quiet week this week so we've not had much to post here except for reviews, which I hope you've been enjoying. We have deliberately chosen not to repost blurry images here of a certain exclusive set that's doing the rounds but you'll find it yourself easily enough if you're keen to see it.
Anyway, part of the reason for the tumbleweed is because I was in a bitterly cold Billund yesterday on a 'top secret mission', the reason for which will come to light in the next few weeks. While there I took the opportunity to visit the LEGO House building site and showroom, in which there's a model of the building and information about it.
The LEGO House, which is being constructed right in the centre of town is due to open in 2017 so there's not a whole lot to see yet but you can see it taking shape.
The pictures were taken from a viewing platform that's been built so that you can see what's going on behind the barriers that surround the site. Not many construction sites go to that trouble, do they...
The poster below shows what it will look like when complete. On the plan, the platform we were standing on is just below and to the right of where it says 'LEGO Square' at the bottom.
In this aerial view, from the LEGO House microsite at LEGO.com, the platform is on top of the red building bottom right.
The showroom is in the light brown building that you can see in the lower of the two photos above. The LEGO replica of the House takes pride of place and gives a good idea of what it will look like when complete.
It looks as if the best view of it will be from the air; at eye-level its mostly white and glass but the roof terraces are a myriad of bright colours. It should look pretty impressive on Bing Maps aerial view...
So, roll on 2017. If there's a press preview day we'll be there, so come back in two-and-a-half years to find out if the inside is as impressive as the outside.

Well, I'll be here in a few weeks for the Mission explanation and I'll be here in 2-and-a-half-years, so you're lucky. ;-)
Looking forward to this Mission thing. I bet you were invited to have a little snoop around or peek at some new sets / machinery.
Exciting, I'll try to update the pics when we go in May
@ Coyote-Lily: Oh, you went too, eh? And you're going back in May? Hmm... ;-)
For anyone as confused as I was, it's the Simpson's Kwik E Mart which has been leaked
Nice to live 35 min away from Billund :-)
Yay, another thing I get to look forward to in 2 years...
So, how many of the exclusive sets did you get for us?
There will be one as a prize for the Mixels competition.
Oooh, a top secret mission. How thrilling! :)
That is one butt ugly building!
In New Zealand when architects "design" boring box like buildings we criticise them for "not having enough lego as a kid "
These guys however cannot be excused for that...
The person who leaked the photo... that's the worst leaked photo I have ever seen. Everyone has smart phones and tat's the best we can get? It's almost to the point of they shouldn't have bothered.
Also you are the first person I have ever mention Bing Maps. haha
I live on the west coast of the United States. Never been to Denmark. I was thinking about going sooner but now I think taking a trip there when the LEGO House is finished would be much better.
Jaaa... Elsker Danmark og at lego er vores :-P
Great pictures. Was there last week, so have not seen the first floor "roof" being put down.
But it will surely be great.
Official site, because it was a little hidden in the text:
https://wwwsecure.lego.com/en-us/legohouse
The site is in english so every one can read it and see pictures from the start of the project :-)
Top secret, waw that sounds important. I hope it's the launch of a new website and working IT structure for the Lego shop. (a girl can dream right, especially Snow White :-D)
No seriously, nice pics, look forward to see this building project when its finished!b and I agree about the viewing platform, it would be cool to do that at more building sites, would be interesting.
I guess you have to be wearing safety equipment at the viewing platform. You have my attention on that "secret mission".
Shouldn't all the construction workers be in blue overalls and red construction helmets?
asymetric!? come on, not really
for a building that's going to represent LEGO it's extremly uninspired and uncreative.
ultra ugly for sure and it lacks any cleverness. so sad about all the ugly CAD buildings nowadays.
would've expected shapes of iconic bricks integrated into it or something.
that architect was never a lego kid, that's guaranteed.
but hey later they can sell the building and remove the lego sign and no one will be able to tell that it was once built for tlc
