Apollo 13 minifigs from minifigs.me
Posted by Huw,
Our friends over at minifigs.me have produced a series of minifigs to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission. Here's the press release:
Apollo 13 LEGO minifigures released for mission’s 45th Anniversary
It seems there a surprise in store for the historic Apollo 13 45th anniversary celebrations - a new set of LEGO minifigures based on the mission has just been released.
Four collectable minifigures have been created depicting astronauts James Lovell, Fred Haise, Jack Swigert and flight director Gene Kranz. Printed by boutique custom minifigure designers minifigs.me, they were produced with expert guidance to ensure no detail was missed.
“We were approached by an expert on the Apollo missions, who wanted to recreate these in time for the anniversary,” Nick Savage, director of UK-based minifigs.me explained. “We worked together for weeks to get them perfect, discussing everything from the precise placement of the metal tabs on suit valves to the way each astronaut wore their watches. We’ve made something very special as a result.”
The expert Savage refers to is Chris Spain, who's online guides to facets of the Apollo Missions have become a go-to resource for enthusiasts.
“Chris sent us a huge amount of research, designs and feedback,” Savage continues. “His expertise and passion for the subject really is something to behold.”
The carefully crafted minifigures can be bought individually or as part of a special “Collector’s Edition” set at the minifigs.me website.
This isn’t the first time Minifigs.me has created highly accurate space minifigures. Before this, it recreated former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, along with three crew members of the International Space Station’s 42 crew. The three ISS crew member minifigs are currently aboard the station, orbiting the Earth with their real-life counterparts.

I was able to inspect them for myself when I met Nick last week at the Bricks launch event and as you'd expect they are printed to a very high quality with an astounding level of detail. If you're a space fan you'll love them.

These look great, awesome idea!
very nice!
Never sure if I should be non lego stuff but these do tempt me. What you guys think is it ok to buy none real lego
The minifigures are great - I love the details on the suits and the vest.
Probably my favorite part though is the "failure is not an option" joke on the alternative flight plan!
Nice idea. But the custom minifigures on this site are massively overpriced for my liking.
^ Funny, thehornedrat, as your online profile could be considered someone else's IP. But then GW has never been known for litigation. ;) LOL.
Would anyone actually buy these? Plenty of people find the Apollo 13 story interesting, but I doubt anyone would be obsessive enough to buy the overpriced unofficial minifigures.
An interesting curio, but way, way too expensive. That's niche products for you, I guess.
It's a shame the type on the labels is inaccurate. The Apollo missions used Futura, the first font on the Moon (you can read more here: https://typewritingblog.wordpress.com/2013/02/01/futura-first-font-on-the-moon/ )
I too like the "failure is not an option" reference; very nice touch!
Jim Lovell's son runs a restaurant in the northern Chicago suburbs (well, he did; it recently closed down). My wife has a picture with Capt. Lovell when he popped in during lunch one day a few weeks ago.
In the movie "Apollo 13", there is a painting meant to represent the "Time Magazine" cover featuring the 3 astronauts, but in this case it was the actors and not the actual astronauts. That painting was hanging on the wall of the lounge in Lovell's restaurant. I did a double-take the first time I saw it, very cool.
Is there a company that does good quality work like this in the United States? I would like to order some of this stuff for a project I am doing but stacking cost on top of overseas shipping is murderous.
MinifigsMe are a friendly company to deal with, always willing to help. I wonder on what basis some of the ill informed nonsense above is based on. This is all made from lego parts as a I understand, so clearly it's lego...
