21303 WALL•E delayed?
Posted by CapnRex101,
Rumours have been circulating over the past few days that 21303 WALL•E will not be released on the 1st of September as originally planned. Instead the set will be delayed to allow time for the correction of a fault. This has been confirmed to The Brick Fan by an employee of a US LEGO Store.
However, the Brighton LEGO Store in the UK says different. Apparently they have a batch ready to sell in their stockroom and have received no instructions to return them to the distributors.
I can see why they might wish to make a slight change to the set design as the neck joint is notably loose, as mentioned in the recent Brickset review. On the other hand, returning sets to LEGO for the change to be made would be expensive so I doubt it would be done at this late stage unless the circumstances were more severe. I suspect any improvements to the design will only appear in the second production run.
We will just have to wait and see what happens on the 1st of September!

Also in the UK there are plenty of people who have already bought them through John Lewis.
maybe they'll just do what they did for the Ant-Man set... suppose it depends on what the change is and how big a problem!
While the head does spin freely where the head connects to the neck- I'm not sure how easily this would be remedied. I read a comment from someone who was at the Q&A Angus MacLane did at D23, and the neck/head was the area that had most revisions. I get the impression the original ball joint didn't pass Lego standards/long period heat tests- while the head does spin if it's at an angle, it's fine when it's horizontal.
Overall it's a fantastic set (got one at John Lewis)- I very happy with it, and it'll be interesting to see how these rumours play out.
We picked one up from a Lego store in Toronto yesterday where there were plenty on the shelf. We'll see if it is an issue tonight once we've built it.
It is very likely to be the neck joint, as Chris said. If it is that that has to be fixed, it'll end up being released around 15th - 22nd of September, similar to the Ant-Man problem.
I have a friend who is a manager of one of the Lego stores in the United States (in the midwest), and he said that the release of Wall-E to their store "had been delayed to later in September due to a quality issue."
Non-Lego stores often ignore release dates and sell products early but it.s strange that an actual Lego store (in Toronto) is already selling the m.
The Brick Fan isn't the only one who's been told about the delay. I've heard similar from Canadian employees.
@LEGO_Group on Twitter has been fielding questions about the set, and they've been saying it's okay to build.
I got mine at john Lewis, and as it's going on display I have no issue with the neck or anything else for that matter.
Ah ha! There's always at least one flaw in a set... And it seems WALL•E's might have been discovered!
TRU in London Ontario Canada has had them since at least Tuesday. Picked up two today.
I don't know how LEGO missed something like that during production? Don't they have tons of employees build it?
First the Ant-Man set and now this? Seems like this recall thing is happening more often now.
Mine arrived today and is already built. Then neck is very wobbley and the head falls forward very easily. I hope LEGO will sort for people who have already purchased as it's very disappointing after all the hype, and knowning I have a substandard set has rather ruined it for me.
TRU in Gateshead had them on the shelves today.
They also had the Monster Minifigs at the tills.
The recall of 76039 Ant-Man Final Battle was actually a little different as most stockists had not received delivery of the set when the design was altered, thereby saving a lot of time and money for LEGO when the change was made.
Nevertheless, it certainly seems surprising considering how many stages there are in the design of a set. Surely somebody along the way would have pointed out the issue?
If TLG is delaying the release of 21303, why did they just put it up online on shop @LEGO europe today with the available date 1 Sep 2015?
Vancouver LEGO Store can confirm this too. They told me check in ~two weeks-ish because nobody really knows how soon it'll be fixed :(
John Lewis have taken the set down from their website - not sure because of the embargo or because of the recall ?
Isn't the picture of Walle (at the very end of this post) a little apropos? I mean, drooping eyes and sad looking and all...
Amazon UK emailed me to say mine will arrive on 5th September.
Saw a stack of them on shelves in John Lewis yesterday so they're not delayed!
I bought one from John Lewis the other day and have built it. The neck is highly disappointing. It's surprising it got this far without being changed but - if it is being recalled for this reason - then it's the right decision.
Also - as someone mentioned them earlier - I've got a fair few Series 14 figures too as an independent toy shop here in Cambridge is selling them (got my duplicates up on eBay as well).
There available to buy in smyths at the moment in Ireland.
I went into John Lewis on Oxford street last night, for a Wall-E, a Louvre and a Star Wars Advent calendar.
They were quite happy to let me have the Wall-E and the Louvre (which I thought had a street date of Sept 1st), but despite confirming that they had plenty of SW Advent calendars, they said it was embargoed until Sept 4th, and I'd have to come back.
What sort of joint does the head have? Could a bit of resistance be added by adding a shim to the joint? Perhaps dry baby wipe material or paper?
I'm all for improving any sets I buy, as at the end of the day it's Lego and designed to be modified.
"Release the Kragle!"
*AUTO-like "Nooooo..."*
Bought and built mine on Monday in NZ, totally agree with the issues with the head, pose on a slight angle looking forward and up and his head will swivel down and he looks backward. There is also an issue with the tracks, they do not turn easily at all, with two of the Tread Sprocket Wheels touching.
I really enjoyed the build and the finished model and now sits proudly on my desk at the office, but no good for playing with.
I bought mine a week ago at the LEGO store in vaughan mills. I havent opened it yet, as it was my bday gift for september so I said I wouldnt ... wonder if this will mean its going to be a rare collectable :P and worth more to leave in the box and that I should just buy another with the corrected issue. on a side note, would we contact lego directly to get a fix for these sets I wonder?
I saw about four sets at a Toys R Us in the Ft. Lauderdale area, so they're leaking out. I should've realized it might have been their mistake when the Lego Store at the Sawgrass Mills Mall about twenty minutes away didn't have Wall-E at all.
Checked with the manager at the Lego store in Colorado. They also confirmed what many have said about it being pushed back to "Mid September" and couldn't say much more than that.
On a side note, the store had already started selling series 14 minifigs, the Friends Advent, the City Advent, and the Halloween set.
Why does it take so long to spot these inherent flaws? At least they didn't wait until it had been on sale for months this time - the external fuel tank on my Shuttle (10213) still disintegrates every time I look in its general direction. (I joke - I ended up modding it to stop it falling apart whenever it was touched, let alone played with.)
@ b1nkynz, sounds like you built it wrong.
The cogs don't touch, the tracks aren't exactly smooth though.
Amazon UK have sent mine out but not sure when it will arrive given it's a bank holiday. I'll just bricklink any changes that are made.
I wasn't aware of the ant man problem. Do they have to re-print all the instructions?
Doesn't make sense. I ordered one from Target USA and another from amazon.uk. the usa one is already here (didn't open) and the uk one has a ship date of sep 19 or sth. i will open one probably the uk one....
Messing about with mine- the real problem seems to be this part-
http://alpha.bricklink.com/pages/clone/catalogitem.page?P=47455&idColor=11T=C&C=11
There is zero friction on mine despite it supposedly having friction on the connection. I've swapped mine over for another from the Metalbeards Duel set with the same result. If there was the correct friction on this part it would hold the head much more securely...
Have built mine what a great model, mine nine year old said that he did not know that lego could be cute. As for the the fault I believe that it must be the top of the neck as it does swivel left and right easily and cannot be posed, I cured it by putting a wrap of double sided tape to give it some friction.
^ haha! Yeah I've used a tiny strip of tape on mine as well to give it some friction.
I likewise just bought this in Toronto. I wonder, if the change is significant, will LEGO issue me replacement parts if I ask? Is that something they've done before?
The LEGO UK shop still has it due for release on 1 September: http://shop.lego.com/en-GB/WALL-E-21303
Gah! To buy or not to buy (on that day) - that is the question!
Well I wasn't going to buy it on release day anyway. So a slight delay to fix it is cool with me.
You'd think somebody would have caught this before...
If it is being delayed, why isn't LEGO just going out with an alert/tweet about it? If random LEGO store employees know about it, why can't they let us know about it too? You know, to save us a trip on Tuesday or save us the disappointment of having to "wait and see what happens".
Got mine from my local store today! Not made it yet but already thinking about possible mods to fix the neck issue.
@Iamwillgibson Yes, they've done that before. They will likely include a small instruction sheet for fixing the problem as well. If memory serves me right they did this for the most recent Technic Excavator.
I think using tape is even worse than using Kragle!!! You're fired!
Have any Lego store employees got an update for us or anyone got any further info on this? Was planning on making a trip on the 1st to my local store in Brighton or even go up to London but won't go if there's a delay and can't get a set. Also don't want to sit around waiting for an update and actually miss out on the set full stop!
Apparently according to the customer service rep, pieces http://brickset.com/parts/4211695 and http://brickset.com/parts/4265484 are supposedly going to need replacing due to low clutch power. I assume this might me the official fix. They are aware of the issue at this point and according to her that's where the problem lies. I haven't built the set at this point nor have the replacements pieces - so I cannot confirm the fix.
Seems to have been pulled from the John Lewis web site ...
That's strange if that's the only fix. The neck joint bricks are weak, sure, but the pin and head rotation weakness is a far bigger issue.
Yup, it has a MASSIVE flaw in the head rotation mechanism.
Shame, because otherwise, this is a masterpiece. Top 10 Lego sets of all time, without a doubt.
By the way, plenty on sale at TRU UK.
Just built mine and it's brilliant apart from the flaw. The head just spins uncontrollably if it's at the slightest of angles.
Maybe if we all email customer services they'll issue a service pack. Though when they did that for 10213 they ignored me when I asked for it.
I emailed customer services about it, and they're sending me two parts - 4265484 and 4211695 - which apparently get replaced on pages 29 and 34... We'll have to see how it works out, as neither of those two parts are what I would say are causing the issue. It's more the frictionless pin on the circular ball joint just beneath the head.
I seriously doubt it's the joints' fault. The head is simply too heavy, and overrides the friction. If they think the problem is in the LOWER neck, then LEGO must not understand what's wrong.
If 4265484 and 4211695 are the two parts they are replacing to fix the problem, then I am extremely disappointed! I got my set from Amazon UK yesterday, and they must have already replaced those two parts in my set, because the joint holding the neck onto the body was extremely stiff/firm. I have no problems with that joint in my set. The main problem is the joint holding the head onto the neck! That's the joint that needs fixing! Surely LEGO must realise this! In its current state, the set essentially allows Wall-E to have one single pose.
This set has started showing up in various Toyworld stores in Australia and New Zealand.
Went to two TRU's in the London area yesterday and no sign of the Walle set?
Typical the one set i feel like buying myself could be faulty.Amazon have a shipping date of september 4th in the uk.I contacted customer services who are unaware of any issues or delay from lego but are checking with them and emailing back. They seemed to claim it was a rumour and nothing more.
Mine is ready for collection at Tesco (£8 + double club card points, yay!)
Is the problem that the head is too heavy for the joint? Or a manufacturing fault in the joint? I have some of these parts and I recall them being pretty stiff.
The joint is strong enough, it's just that the technic pin from that joint that connects to a technic beam, has no friction to it, so it spins round far too easily.
So if my lego wall e comes from amazon is it safe to say lego will adress peoples sets that need a revision by posting that part out at a later date.I have to say im not overly fussed as this set is going straight on display but would hate the head spinning around should it be touched.
personally i plan on buy this set and others as soon as i can flaw or no flaw. as soon as someone comes up with a good fix i will mod mine. but it is way to cool to miss out on getting one ASAP.
@Greendude: The problem is purely in the design. It was very poorly considered. The thing is, the problem is SO OBVIOUS, that LEGO must simply have ignored it. There is no way they didn't know it was a problem at the design phase, and it's incredible that it got approved for production in this state.
The set is essentially useless for display as it is, because the head has just one single position that it is stable in. The most ridiculous part is, that you cannot replicate ANY of the poses displayed on the box. It's a shame, because it's the best looking LEGO Ideas set... but easily the most flawed.
Picked one up in Smyths in Dublin today. No sign of a delayed release here ;-)
Was just at a Lego store in the US today and asked about Wall-E and the employee said it is "delayed indefinitely", so not sure when they'll be getting them.
I think we may be dealing with multiple problems here, some sets needing 4265484 and 4211695 replacing and some not (they seem fine on mine). The problem with my set was the head rotation on the pin on part 4522784 (should have been a friction pin). I've solved the problem by wrapping a thin strip of sellotape around it, it's fine now !
I had no problems with the click hinges but the head rotation is definitely an issue. The weight of the head is at the front. If you try to make him look up then gravity turns the head around because there's no friction in the pin connection of 4522784. I don't think a friction version of that part currently exists.
Mines shipped from amazon. Will hold onto before building if i can resist.Cant find any series 14 figures in uk yet
Just collected mine from my local Asda store - £37 well spent :)
I emailed Lego customer services about the delay rumours and have just received an email back stating that there is "good news" and "there is no delay on the Wall-E set here in Europe". Not sure whether this means that the sets will be sold and the 'fault' people are describing being rectified at a later date or of the sets in Europe are unaffected
Bah humbug, no Wall-E in John Lewis or TRU in Kingston :-(
It was available in Lincoln (UK) Toys R Us on Friday.
Just ordered from ASDA, £36.97, an absolute bargain at that price.
The set is now available on Lego.com, limited to 1 per customer..so it seems no delay as some expected......also 40122 Trick or Treat set is also available....
Interesting that only ToysRUS in the US has actually sold theirs; everyone else have not listed or shipped (Amazon presold, but haven't shipped out).
Amazon has started shipping the sets.
True. And now officially up:
http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Ideas-WALL-21303-Building/dp/B00ZSJMPLU
I' buy the set in a french ToysRUS store last week on Wednesday. Two set were avaible.
I was the first to buy Wall-E from the LEGO store in Stratford. Now to build it and see what problem there is(n't) with it!
It's LEGO, not some pre-formed articulated lump of plastic like the junk that Hasbro and Mattel produce. I have yet to buy an official LEGO set that didn't have a flaw and/or could be improved upon with a few more pieces. Adopt, adapt and improve - It's what LEGO is all about :-)
Happened upon mine in a Westminster CO, USA ToysRUs store this past week. Beautiful and mega-collectble LEGO model, hard to get past how they could not foresee the "wobble-ness" of the lower neck joist" in quality assurance tests. Nonetheless, a user MOC can really save the day to bring this masterpiece up to the 5 that it deserves!! With the official LEGO fix, it's a 3. One has to wonder in this day and age, where you have the number one Toy manufacturer in the world, teamed up with Disney and Pixar, how on earth such an obvious flaw was ever permitted?! It's a definite F-up when it comes to the history of LEGO sets being released.
