The 2011 Brickset user survey
Posted by Huw,
As has become customary at this time of year, I'm running another user survey to find out what YOU think of the site: what you like and what you don't. It doesn't matter if you're a KFOL, TFOL, AFOL, member or non-member, I'm really interested to hear your opinion.
This year has seen some major improvements and additions to the site, many in response to your comments last year (which you can read here). Here's a reminder of the main ones:
- Minifig galleries: I started creating these back in January and since then have added hundreds of high-quality photos of minifigs. There's some work to do to update them, and I'll be doing so over the winter.
- Links to Eurobricks reviews, maintained by the Eurobricks Reviewers' Academy teachers.
- Advanced Collection Manager: A much requested feature finally saw the light of day in the spring
- Amazon Bargain Watch pages and alerts, love 'em or hate 'em!
- Last but certainly not least, the Brickset Forum was launched.
- Plus, many minor improvements and tweaks under the bonnet to keep the site working at its best.
So, here's your chance to influence the future of Brickset. The site thrives on user feedback so, please, complete the 2011 survey and have your say.
Update: about 24 hours later and 328 of you have left feedback, which is excellent, thank you. If you haven't already provided yours then please do so now! I'll leave the survey running until next weekend.

YEE-HAA! :D LET'S GO! :D
EDIT: SENT! :)
Cool, this will be my first time doing the survey, looking forward to having my say. Just one problem: can't open it on mobile brickset, so looks like I'll have to do it at work tmrw :)
I have just completed it. This is my first time doing the survey also :)
I have to say, your surveys are way better then the lego company's.
Just finished it, and my eyes didn't bleed, unlike The LEGO Group's recent survey. Thank goodness! I also gave it a very positive review :)
Nice survey. I didn't rate the forum, I'm glad it didn't make me. I do agree that this survey is MUCH better than Lego's. That is based on the questions, not the color. :P
(What do you like?)
"I like the info about new sets long before they are announced. I believe everything is done [and run] very well on Brickset, it is hard to name any other non-corporate (I mean lego, nick, etc.), that is even HALF as good as Brickset."
(What don't you like?)
"I don't like the 16+ rule on the forum since I am not even quite 14 yet, but I respect it from the aspect of AFOLs and child safety. The more critical moderation on news comments is very odd, I have not know it to have been a problem before. I am not talking about my somewhat innappropriate comment, for the record.
The My Friends tool is kind of an orphaned feature, I think you guys could maybe do something else with it.
I would like the Helpful/Unhelpful review ratings to become a Poor/Okay/Good or a 5-star rating system. I lost my Silver (and apparently my Bronze too) rating because of it."
@jonbuddy: I suggested a Brickset KIDS forum, based at Brickset itself, not at Vanilla. This means only one account would be needed.
EDIT: I also complained about the stricter moderation... :P
You could have also crunched the numbers for "overall satisfaction"
@Alemas, that might work. And then us younger-than-16 TFOLs would be stuck with the kiddies. :P
@jonbuddy: Hey, it's the same at the LEGO Message Boards! :P It would be just like home! :P
@Alemas: Why would we need a 16- forum here when there's the LEGO Message Boards on LEGO.com? It doesn't make sense for Brickset to invest cash in something that's already there.
@TooMuchLEGO: Well... we would have less young kids than in the MBs... :P Wait, it can be a mixed forum. Kids and adults discussing LEGO. It would be interesting seeing the different points of view. Sounds good?
I've mostly filled it out, just have the comment arias to fill.
@TooMuchLEGO / Alemas: The MB are definitely lacking; and many things on the brickset forum wouldn't go well there, especially since most people there are KFOL, just look at these two: http://messageboards.lego.com/en-US/showpost.aspx?PostID=4090306, http://messageboards.lego.com/en-US/showpost.aspx?PostID=4026284
@Huw: Many of the links for 8858 Rebel Wrecker lead to 8858 Auto Engines, which is sort of confusing!
^^Good idea.
I want 1960's sets added! Please!
Really great site you have here! It's been helpful to me for tracking my sets :) One thing though...would it be possible to add in a feature where you can edit a set review AFTER posting it? Thanks.
^You can already.
Very nice survey! :)
To All Who Want a 16- forum: I totally agree, but their is a legal issue with it. Lego.com is different, every post is moderated BEFORE it's posted, and though I don't know a whole lot about the law, I know it's their.
Huw: Could you Elaborate on the subject? :) :P
To all teens wanting a 16- forum/12+ forum :P: As teens we're stuck between adulthood and childhood, it is also so with Lego :P I think we're just gonna' have to wait it out till we are 16+ to post on a "Not super strict forum" forum :P
Awesome!
What a great idea!
EDIT:
Survey Completed.
Hopefully my suggestion will be added! :D
Long live Brickset!
@Huw: No offense but, you own Brickset Right? So if you died, who would receive ownership?
I am just asking out of curiosity. :D ;)
^ Yeah Huw, what would happen if you deaded?
@LEGOSLUG, It wouldn't be you. :P Not even close. :P JK, JK.
Anyway, Huw's nowhere even CLOSE to dying! Isn't he only like in his late 30's/early 40's? :P
I suggested that you be able to mark how much of a set you own in the ACM, if the set is incomplete.
@jonbuddy, well I'm a little older than that but hopefully still not even close to dying just yet, and @legoslug, you make a good point about safeguarding the future of the site and while it's not totally addressed now, it soon will be.
You've made a litle mistake: you write that the reviews are maintained by EB review acadamey teachers, but I'm updating them too :p Mostly once a day.
This the first thing I have done on Brickset under a username! What does it mean on our profile to befriend someone?
I think the survey results may be displaying them for both last year's and this year, since some of the comments on top reference the forum, the ACM, and the ebay banner on the front page.
@nathan: You can track your friends' reviews more easily.
Thanks Brickmatt you my be right, someone else has mentioned something similar. Will check it out when I get home...
@Huw: Yup, there are BOTH my responses in the results... :P
@Huw: Sorry, I am not trying to be rude, And I am NOT saying I should own Brickset, I was just a matter of curiosity.
I have seen it happen with other sites, owner dies, so the site gets shut down for good. Please tell us once the matter is addressed. (jonbuddy is wrong-you are not older than 50?)
@Alemas: :P ????!!!!!
I agree with people above, more options with Friends would be neat. I dont have any though :(
@KillDeer, Just friend someone! Even me! :)
@Huw, I doubt you're older than my parents! My dad is 48, my mom is 46. They don't look or act old though. :P
@padnic, Not everyone has HTML5 yet I don't think, maybe in a few years.
The ebay banner isn't working.
Hey Huw/Brickset team, do you read every review? Or is it kinda' like an automated thing :P I have a feeling you read every one individually I was just wondering.
I said this in the survey, but it bears repeating where the rest of the FOLs can read it.
THANK YOU for this site! Since I got back into LEGOs this site, it's database and news have been INDISPENSABLE to me and I don't know what I'd do without it. Thank you so much.
@padnic, Oh. I did not realize that. Thanks for telling me. I knew websites like Youtube have converted at least...
@itsaturkey, I think they do.
WHAT HAPENED TO RANDOM BRICKLIST? not to be dramatic but random bricklist was a great way to get some more viewers for your Bricklist. I even have some that have not been rated.
Huw, do you know how many people are members at Brickset? Just wondering.
Thomson & Thompson: '33275 Brickset members use the My Sets facility' side bar of the home page.
^I know, but how many don't use My Sets?
Hmmm...I forgot to put this on my survey, but what if you made it so that we recieved updates about the sets on our wanted list, i.e., price changes, availability changes, etc? (I don't use that feature much, so I wouldn't know if it already did that!).
49,000 registered members; 32,121 of whom have logged in since 1/1/2009.
Huw: Wow!! that a lot of people!!
^^49,000!!! That's a lot of people! Still, 17,000 of them haven't been here since 2009.
