Who can do what in Dimensions?

Posted by ,

If you are working your way through Dimensions and are thinking of buying expansion packs to gather new character abilities, you may be wondering which packs you need to buy to be able to acquire them all.

Thanks to StephenR you can now find out. He's provided us with this graphic that shows a matrix of characters and abilities so you can see what to buy to be able to, for example, do tracking.

With few of the abilities being unique to a single character, there is probably an optimum set of packs to buy to obtain them all at the lowest cost: I will leave it as an exercise to the reader to work out what that is.

Stephen hopes you find it useful, but apologises that he can't update it until the new year: he's off to navy boot camp...

This will come in super handy!

This doesn't cover the vehicles and gadgets though. The other builds of the vehicles can do some of the abilities as well. The mystery machine can put out fires and benny's space ship can destroy gold lego.

Wow, I imagine a lot of game-time went into making that chart ;).

I would also like to see one for vehicle abilities.

I will be working on the vehicles and secondary builds and have that released next year hopefully with the third wave some time between January and February when I can finally get internet connection back. Thank you for your support and I'll need it all for boot camp.

someone on reddit created a spreadsheet that allowed you to mark the sets you had and coloured the spreadsheet so you know where you needed characters. i cant find the link for it but it's pretty useful! i have a copy if anyone wants it, but i must stress, it's not my own work :)

Great, I have been looking for this. Will probably buy all of them, anyway, though... :-/

Lose a lot of money on overpriced LEGO. ;)

Nice. I may need to look at this since we're spending far too much money on Lego Dimensions sets. Shell is a must have, IMHO, and the spreadsheet supports this argument.

I'm probably getting dimensions in the next fortnight, this is really going to help me not go overboard in the initial purchase.

^Okay, your comment is like saying Einstein had done all the Math so no one should bother?

Stephen, we are looking forward to seeing your updates when you get back. Have fun at the boot camp.

Target has a buy 2 get 1 free deal this week on vidoegames. The Dimensions packs are included.

@1360 I'm not saying that. I just pointed it out for anyone looking for a chart with with all the vehicles, items, etc. included. Sorry if I offended anyone.

It's also worth noting that post-patch, you can now spend studs to give you the use of characters you haven't physically bought, albeit for a limited game time. Doesn't help unlock levels/worlds, but can help you complete minikits, etc.

All these articles on Dimensions make me want to buy the game, alas it is just too expensive. :(

LEGO sent an "official" list of the minimum sets required to unlock every level, adventure world and ability to a LEGO.com user who requested it via email:

PRICE WAVE PRODUCT
$100.00 Wave 1 Starter
$30.00 Wave 1 Back to the Future Level Pack
$30.00 Wave 1 The Simpsons Level Pack
$30.00 Wave 1 Portal 2 Level Pack
$25.00 Wave 1 Jurassic World Team Pack
$25.00 Wave 1 Scooby Doo Team Pack
$15.00 Wave 1 Emmet Fun Pack
$15.00 Wave 1 Gollum Fun Pack
$15.00 Wave 1 Wicked Witch Fun Pack
$15.00 Wave 1 Cragger Fun Pack
$30.00 Wave 2 Doctor Who Level Pack
$15.00 Wave 2 Unikitty Fun Pack
$30.00 Wave 3 Ghostbusters Level Pack
$15.00 Wave 3 Sensei Wu Fun Pack
$15.00 Wave 3 Cyberman Fun Pack
$30.00 Wave 4 Midway Arcade Level Pack
$15.00 Wave 4 Superman Fun Pack
$15.00 Wave 4 Aquaman Fun Pack
$465.00 TOTAL

But there's a few points I'd like to point out that make this list inaccurate:
1. It ignores wave 5. Wave 5 includes Slimer, which can use underwater mini access like Gollum, but can also pass through ghosts underwater. This is something only Slimer can do.
2. Many traps and puzzles require the use of multiple abilities in a relatively short timespan, which isn't considered by this list. There was a Fix-It machine in the Wizard of Oz Adventure World that was behind a security camera. Since I didn't own Jay(Stealth and Fix-It), I resorted to repeatedly trying to jump out of the TARDIS and into the small area with the machine. When I finally fixed it, I realized it was a machine that needed electricity to run, another Jay ability. Since I hadn't opened the Jurassic World Team Pack, I decided to use "Hire a Hero" instead...and of course the ACU Trooper spawned into the game OUTSIDE of the secure room with the generator, with a 30 second timer ticking away.
3. If you "accidentally" buy sets not on the list, you can occasionally skip sets on the list altogether. I bought Legolas, Zane and Nya, so I won't need Sensei Wu as I have Spinjitsu and Pole Vault abilities.

By in Canada,

This graph is nice and convenient, as would any online source, however the in-game Character menu showcases what abilities they have just by hitting the action button, allowing you to see who can use what abilities from all five waves just by taking a few moments to look over it.

Also, Nya can fix things too, since I got her first from the Ninjago sets it was how I found out she could fix things since I had yet to get Emmet. Also, The Doctor can use sonar smash with his sonic, which is absent from this graph for some reason.

LEGO Dimensions is an expensive investment, both waves available right now are over 560$+taxes so it is nice to know what you can buy from the start to better plan out who you should buy if you're on a budget.

Thank you to Stephen for making this! It is awesome! Also, a huge salute for joining the navy! Good luck at camp!

There are some qualitative abilities too which should be considered. For example at this time the witch, eris and Wonder Woman can fly but the witch flies the fastest. Many of the ninja characters are good for melee combat and can move quickly on foot compared to many others.

^"How many people here buy every single starwars set or every single city set?"

I see your point, but be careful asking this question on a Brickset forum...you might be unpleasantly surprised by the answer!
