Angry Birds set details emerge
Posted by TheBrickPal,Ever since LEGO and Rovio announced plans to produce building sets for The Angry Birds Movie next year, there has been much skepticism by fans. The teasers in July and October (to the right) didn't do much to change opinions.
Well, user Galaad and others on Eurobricks have been spreading some information about what we can expect from this theme in the spring of 2016.
- There will be a set of a ship owned by the Bad Piggies, based on the ship seen in the trailer.
- A catapult will be included in all six sets; which suggests that the theme, and therefore the movie, will retain the elements that made the Angry Birds games so popular.
- The (big) bird minifigures we can expect so far are Red, Chuck, Bomb, Stella, and Matilda.
Are you excited, or has this theme arrived a few years too late?

Well, that ship looks interesting. A Lego version might be interesting as well. Still not convinced entirely, though. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
^I can agree
Quality of the film will either re-invigorate the franchise and drive sales or it will suck and this is likely to fall flat. Problem is most of the people that liked Angry Birds and created its popularity have long since moved on.
I saw a preliminary image of the ship somewhere online yesterday and it looks just like the ship in the picture. It looks very impressive. I also like the idea of the catapult being included.
I never loved Angry Birds, and won't watch the film. I guess if they include some good pieces in the sets though I might pick some up when they're cheap.
Edit: Just found the set descriptions for Civil War and Black Panther's mentioned! :D
Second Edit: Found the images for the microracers, although they have water marks on them so they likely won't be there for long.
Will probably only get for parts. Sounds like those catapults could be fun though!
I'm really unsure of how anything Angry Birds will be translated to film or Lego. It does seem like an after thought at this point. But maybe that's just because I haven't personally played Angry Birds in years. Perhaps it's still a big deal with kids. My nephews are excited about it.
In general, LEGO ships are good news!

They are not fans, they are haters.
Hell, I was skeptical when I first heard about The LEGO Movie.... I couldn't have been more happy to be so wrong.
I'm excited we are getting an egg piece.
The egg piece does look nice. Here's hoping there's a cheap set with a good number of those. Or maybe they'll find a way to include one in a CMF somewhere down the line.
I'm also curious about the catapult. Wonder if it'll be all one piece...
I love how everyone here just wants the bird eggs.
I wonder why everyone here just wants the bird eggs.
I have never played Angry Birds and have little interest in the film... but like alijoezac I might be interested in the ship - looks like a mini Sea Cow in the linked picture!
i play angry birds, enjoy the game but its "gone" already, i think the theme came a litle late, but maybe with the movie, the Angry Birds Fever rises again... if not seems to join the Jurassic World sets with only one year in the market
I hope this line will bomb hard, TLC needs to be more selective in regards to which licenses it picks up.
I used to enjoy playing the game but certainly wouldn't pay for Lego sets of it. I can see it appealing to kids if it is made like the game and you have to knock things over with a catapult but I would have though it was a few years too late. We shall see!!
I enjoy playing AB, and have almost all of the games, the last of which I'll be downloading over the next couple of weeks. I think if these were brick-built, they'd look a lot better, so right now, I'm going to wait and see what we get. I must say that it's slightly odd that we're getting Stella, as I've never seen her appear in the 'Toons TV' episodes, and she doesn't appear in levels very often. She does have her own 'Toons TV show', though.
Despite all this, I really want to see Terence.
Hm, start with Angry Birds, then do Angry Birds Star Wars, then a brand new Angry Birds Jurassic Park (Angry Dinosaurs?). I'd consider buying them. :D
Saw photos of the ship and it looks good In Lego form
The pigs look interesting... Might be useful as some kind of goblin or blob monster in MOCs.
I was unaware this was a thing. I don't play games on my basic phone, but from what I've seen of this, I will happily pass. It will have to be on a good sale with good pieces to justify a purchase from me. I guess we will see how the rest of the world takes it to see how they do.
Not too surprised to know that we won't see most recurring characters in these sets (and also the the movie itself). Wish that we can see some additional polybags featuring more birds in the future.
I might have to buy some megabloks for the pig structures as the clutch power of Lego will prevent them from falling over.
The very opening sequence (TT logo) for LEGO Jurassic World had an Easter egg piece. It doesn't look like a "real world" egg because it has a flat bottom. I wonder if this is the same part, and TT had the model way in advance. Maybe it's just a coincidence that LEGO eventually developed an egg.
They rarely make fake LEGO pieces for the games if they don't have to (with the primary exception being minifigure parts), so it's not entirely implausible.
The egg would have made a nice addition to that Easter vignette set earlier this year. Hopefully they do more next year
Seriously?? I think it is really nonsens to make a film about this game. But making LEGO figures from a film, based on a silly mobile game??? That's one thing the world really does not need.
I might have considered buying this 5 years ago but now? No way! There are WAY better sets coming in 2016!
I'm trying very hard not to dismiss these as rubbish without seeing them first...
Cash grab.
Still reserving judgment. I loved Angry Birds back in the day, including the animated shorts that supported the game, so a successful movie isn't out of the question for me (news that the original animators have moved on is worrisome, I admit). High-quality Lego sets can also come out of low-quality IPs, anyway--consider TLR, where the sets were much better than (by all accounts) the movie! This could go either way--and given that TLG has yet to produce a theme that hasn't won me over sooner or later, I suspect I'll give in and get at least one of these sets too.
Glad to hear about the catapults. That physics-based element is a big part of what makes Angry Birds so charming (besides the colorful character designs), so losing that would have been a bit disappointing. Angry Birds is far from the peak of its popularity, but people still play the games and obviously people still buy the merchandise (judging from how much of it I see produced), so I can see the seeds of popularity that the movie can potentially grow into something greater.
I have no personal interest in this series, and I expect it to be a one-wave theme like Jurassic World. But I think a lot of the cynicism/disgust I've seen for this series in the AFOL community is a bit overblown. Not every license has to be as strong as LEGO Super Heroes or LEGO Star Wars. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to take a risk on something that might, in the very least, generate a temporary craze.
Worst case scenario, the movie bombs, and the sets follow suit. If so, that's not a big deal. It's just six sets and probably less than a dozen new molds, much like Jurassic World. With as big a company as the LEGO Group is today, that's not a particularly big risk on their part. In the event that the movie fails, they'll wash their hands, take a good hard look at why it failed and how it can be avoided in the future, and move on.
"There's been much skepticism by fans"? Skepticism is totally different to criticism.
@bok2: I think it's one of those things where only the fans would care enough to hate it (but I feel they really do mean skeptical). I wouldn't consider myself a fan and I am indifferent to the whole thing.
I cannot be the only person who thinks the entire English language (to say of nothing of Western civilisation in general) took a giant step backwards when someone added an "r" to the end of "hate" to make a noun. Being critical of something doesn't make you a "hater" (gosh, my teeth grind just typing that word). I don't like being punched in the face. That doesn't make you a hater, it just means you have an opinion about something.
(there's also a lovely contrast. People saying they have no interest in this franchise and won't be seeing the movie? People who say that about the upcoming Ghostbusters film get called all sorts of names. But it's okay to say you're not interested in this franchise *without* being called Pigist or Birdist or Angryist? Interesting...)
Look, I hope it succeeds and Lego makes money out of it. But ... as said, isn't this about five years too late? We'll get some good pieces out of it, but I don't know, I think this was an odd decision by Lego and I don't see how it'll be a terribly profitable one. *shrug*
^This. I agree with all that you just said.

Wow so we've been going the wrong direction for 600 or so years? ;) http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hater
@Zordboy: the word "hater" is entirely legitimate in terms of grammar, just like a driver is someone who drives. The only issue is, as you say, the way it's thrown around at anyone critical of the latest fad.

"I hope this line will bomb hard, TLC needs to be more selective in regards to which licenses it picks up."
To me this person represents a hater.
@bok2
Maybe that's the opinion of someone who wants better from Lego. Someone who wants to see Lego succeed, but not to compromise their integrity to do so. That sounds more like a "lover" than a "hater" to me.
Also, by diminishing someone to a label you disregard their nuanced point of view. It would be like me calling you a "fanboy" for just opposing "haters" for apparently no reason. It goes no where and is pointless. If an argument can't stand on it's own merits it will be evident without the need to resort to name calling.
For me personally, Lego picking up this license feels like Lego prostituting itself out to the highest bidder with no regard for the outcome. Phone games like Angry Birds, Candy Crush, Fruit Ninja, etc. are the artistic equivalent of McDonalds. Devoid of integrity themselves, this move smears the sleaze onto Lego, and while movie tie-ins are nothing new for Lego, this one is a new low.
Lego has been expanding rapidly and understandably wants to ride that wave. We've already seen how their quality has dipped by moving too fast, maybe their thought process has, too.
Angry Birds is still a thing?
Ok...as long as we get cool sets...
About the new egg piece: Someone mentioned seeing one in the Lego Jurassic World video game.
On that note, I noticed that in Lego Worlds, the "Dragon Egg" item seems to be a representation of this new piece as well -- from my observation in-game, it looks as if it will not only have the expected flat bottom with the anti-stud, but also a "hair-accessory-pin sized" hole starting on the top and running all the way through, presumably for ventilation. See an image (not mine) at http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/lego-worlds/images/3/3d/Dragon_Egg-Dragon_Wizard.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150830082014
I realize that this could be an earlier version of the design, but I thought it was worth reporting -- if nothing else, it seems to support the rumor that TT Games gets early knowledge of such new pieces.
I don't care how good or bad the movie is or isn't, I'm just looking forward to the colourful Angrybirds minifigs to collect...
To those saying that Lego structures hold together too well: Tiles are things that exist.
