Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 11

Posted by ,

Today we move to a new subject in the calendar as the Imperial fleet arrives. This is the second time an Imperial Star Destroyer has been included in a Star Wars Advent Calendar after it first appeared in 2012. The new model has been significantly updated and looks far better than the previous one in my opinion.

Although the pointed shape is impossible to capture in full detail at this scale I think the wedge plates do a decent job overall and I like the bridge superstructure very much. This assembly is placed on a 2x2 jumper plate which produces a nice effect and accurately represents the shape of the vehicle in the movie.

Overall - 4.0 - A good model considering the small scale but there are still one or two refinements to be made.

You've assembled it slightly wrong - the dark grey tile/plate should be one stud further back. It's not clear from the instruction on the back of the calendar door, but if you check the top right corner of the picture on the box you'll see it. I know this because I made the same mistake as you!

I don't know if it's been "massively" updated--it's mostly the same as the original with an update to the bridge.

It is a little weird when they update some of these micro builds, though. There's three different versions of the TIE, for example (2 different ones from Advent Calendars and 1 from Toys R Us).

I do like the above incorrect assembly better that the intended form.

Its good! The bridge is impossible to get right at this scale, the last one was too small and this one is a bit too big, but it was the right decision to make it like this, because this is the more realistic of the two.

I'll blame Huw for the incorrect build, it's his photo :)

Is it a case of Huw-man error then.... Ho ho chortle chortle. I am a fan of the error build as well.

The correct way certainly gives it more length.

I wonder if the grade will be different if he had assembled it properly....hmmm :)

There are two different ways of building this cute little model following the instructions on the box; one is shown on the inside of door 11, on the left upper corner of the open calendar and also on the back of the calendar.
But my favourite version is on the front of the calendar with the lid closed, right between the STAR WARS-logo and the A-Wing. Bulid that way, the destroyer looks best.

Great little model. I think the shape is retained pretty well at this scale. I think the bridge part looks good, but I don't like how it swivels too easily.

I'm still... less than thrilled by this Advent Calendar.

@struddie: I would Give it a lower grade due to "difficult to comprehend" instructions. I looked at the box upon reading struddie's comment at the very top, then double checking the photo, then again double checking the instructions and discovering I too in fact had made the same mistake. If you look closely at the instructions, it becomes quite clear that the attachment is in fact two studs back. Thanks for the heads up struddie!

Eh. I prefer the small bridge to this one.

The picture on the box made me look forward to this. Building it was, uhm, a bit less satisfactory than I had hoped. And yes, I did build it like the picture above the first time, then thought "something's wrong" and upon closer inspection of the "intruction" inside the door realized the jumoper plate had to be one stud more to the aft of the ship.

Then I read Koerpis post above and looked that picture up and realized that that somehow does the ship most justice.

So even Lego seems to not be very sure about the build.

Adding a comparison picture would be nice of both new and old model would be nice.

So, this is basically a carbon copy of the Star Destroyer received with the UK SW magazine in October - http://brickset.com/sets/SW911510-1/Micro-Star-Destroyer-and-TIE-Fighter
With a couple of bits added on top. I'm sure there are a lot of disappointed people holding both in their hands right now. 2 on the score for lack of creativity, personally.
