Go behind the scenes of Mixels, part 2

Posted by ,

Part two of the Mixels documentary series we reported on a few days ago has been uploaded to the LEGO website. It describes the history of how the franchise was developed with Cartoon Network's help!

Among the topics discussed in the video, one thing interested me the most: Mixels was originally conceptualized as "Hungry Monsters"; mix-and-match creatures with really big mouths! This must have been before LEGO moved on to these "Monsters" prototypes discovered about a year ago, shown after the break...

LEGO Monsters

CN executives visited Billund, saw these little guys, and were hooked. One suggested the name Mixels, and it stuck! The partnership between the companies began from there.

I'm expecting part three, The Toy Design of Mixels, by Sunday (if this release pattern continues), so we will update you again around that time!

To be honest, I like the LEGO Monsters idea better than Mixels. The Monsters have a more organic look to them and use a wide variety of pieces in creative ways. Mixes rely a lot on their small ball joints and end up sacrificing looks for articulation. I don't really like how Mixels is heading the way of inorganic-looking characters either. I might try a few builds in the style of these monsters; seems like a cool and creative concept that anyone can do, and it doesn't require the specialized Mixel joints.

The Mixels don't require the specialized Mixel joints either. There's been several without them.

I really hope soon we will get much more and different eye pieces because they are the first brick that gaves them a lot of personality!

I bloody love Mixels! Despite what some people may think, its my fave theme and is the only one I actually collect rather than getting every do often. Cheers for the video share I'm really enjoying them :-)

Yes, but they still utilize some kind of joint, usually click-hinges. I just like the look of Monsters, how they have no grey hinges everywhere. Just more organic I guess.
