LEGO Ideas round-up

Posted by ,

It's been a while since we did an article on cool LEGO Ideas projects, hasn't it. I guess we haven't found the time lately.

We receive quite a few requests to help promote specific projects but generally we don't do so, not because they aren't great models but because we believe, based on precedence, even if they reach 10k they'd never pass review.

Projects are often too large or are based on an existing LEGO-licensed IP and as we have seen such projects don't pass review. One of the purposes of Ideas is to bring to LEGO's attention IPs and ideas that it has not thought of itself, so originality is key.

Having said all that, here are a few that have been brought to our attention recently:

All cool models, no doubt, but are any of them viable? Let us know what you think in the comments.

The modular construction site and the Newtonian telescope look awesome.

They do indeed, but if they reached 10k, based on precedence, would they pass review? Personally, I don't think so.

Has Lego ever literally stated that all 'modular sized' projects are stopped by Gandalf? If not, would it hurt them to clearly stipulate project building rules/size constraints?

I like the construction site btw, I'd love to see a remake of that crane in any case.

Harry Potter chess would have been a good set back when Lego produced the other sets of the same IP. It is just too late for it, now.
Love the construction site.
As for locomotives - there are so many incredibly well done ones in the Lego train MOC-osphere, this one does not really stand out. I wonder why the Lego train sets have not had a steamer for a long time, though (except for the Lone Ranger one which did not have an engine).

Judging on already released projects, The Beatles and Willy Wonka might have a chance. But I don't know about IPs. I gave up supporting large sets; it seems useless.

They have done construction site sets in the past like 7633. Not sure this modular idea is really all that ground breaking other than being fancier. Ideas seems to be struggling with models having to be incredible MOCs like this in order to get attention, but at the same time, they are so big and detailed it is almost sure to be their downfall come review stage. Even if one did pass it would probably have to be dumbed down considerably to be within a marketable cost and part count. At which point the supporters all complain it isn't what they voted for.

As much as I love Thunderbirds, and I watched the original series as a child, that just doesn't do it for me.

Going back to the original subject, I would buy the Construction Site modular but I don't see it being produced somehow.

The construction site looks nice but if LEGO wanted one in that range they'd do it themselves, willy wonka and the beatles look decent too.

The best ideas project i've seen for a while is "Make Any Set a Movie" https://ideas.lego.com/projects/130691

not too big, has playability but also a bit of fun to display along with existing LEGO sets. Which seems to be the right mix for an ideas set - and this one doesn't rely on an IP.

PLEASE let the Beatles make review.

There's also my project, the Kinetic Sphere, a dodecahedron that can expand and contract much like a Hoberman Sphere.

While the part count is somewhat high at 1,200 in its current design, this could be cut down quite a bit using some newer Technic pieces without sacrificing the complexity of the design.

Mmh, the Beatles and probably the Wonka ideas are just an excuse to produce minifigs I guess. Given recent Ideas sets, that might actually go through if they can get the IP (doubt it with the Beatles), but personally I'm not very interested.

The construction site is cool, with a lot of nice details, but as somebody said: if Lego wanted to do this, it might just become next year's modular building (not an Ideas set).

The telescope looks great, but may be a bit too geeky.

The rest I think is rather meh...

By in Australia,

Out of these I really can't see any of them passing review. Willy Wonka would have the best chance on size and IP placement, but without any current TV show or new movie to generate a fan base, I can't see them going for it. What about mention of the rough dozen submissions that have gained 10,000 votes and gone through to review since the last time you mentioned Ideas?

I personally think we should see more projects like Totoro & Catbus, which are aptly sized for an Ideas set, as compared with previously approved sets.

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/124007

Thus far, the modular sets appear to be too large for Ideas, the Ten Wheeler is a bit banal, Willy Wonka needs more factory interior if it's to be a successful first of line set, and Harry Potter Chess showed up late to the party.

Newtonian Telescope is trying to ride the wave of interest in astronomy, and is a nice model, but not much more. The days of an Ideas display model a la Hayabusa are few and far between. The Medieval Pharmacy and Beatles Club would work well, and are nice designs.

PS - Yes, Totoro & Catbus is mine. :)

I must be alone in loving the 10 Wheeler train set - both as a model and a parts pack. Sadly trains don't seem to do very well unless they have 'Back to the Future' in the title... :(

By in United States,

Admittedly I am biased, but out of those listed, the Ten Wheeler steam loco has the best shot. It's a concise & accurate set, just complex enough, and is something that LEGO hasn't traditionally done well; Steam Engines! Plus it would be so nice to see a really good American steam engine done as an official set!

I guess I don't see what others do with that Modular Construction Site...everyone is raving about it. I see a boring building with some construction equipment. I'd imagine for the size, it wouldn't be a viable set and if LEGO were to produce one (which they basically have with smaller buildings) they would do one on their own without IDEAS.

But I'm a harsh critic, so don't take what I say for fact. I just see things differently than others I guess.

As for the other sets, HP Chess is a neat idea. I've considered doing one myself. Interesting way to make the pieces.

Willy Wonka/Beatles would be neat to have as figures, but I won't vote for them.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I like the Beatles set, the rest are kinda meh. Either too big, too bland or too many pieces. That telescope would have to be sold for $70, I don't see a market for that.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Don't K'Nex hold the Beatles licence, definitely seen a Yellow submarine set in Home Bargains.

Whilst most seem nice models, none of them seem likely. They really should be putting some limits, if they're never going to produce a massive model, they should say so

Has anything passed a review lately? If so then both the Construction Site and the Medieaval Pharmacy get my votes.

By in Germany,

The Classic Space Stegosaurus (Spaceosaurus) is currently the only model I would buy, I guess, but my childhood nostalgia does not seem to be shared by many Ideas users. Plus, that market segment was already somewhat covered by the exo suit, which had more of a Wow factor (and stability issues, but that I did not see before buying) and was still sold 30% off near the end of its shelf life.

Just about to go onto Ideas to check some of these projects out, and found out my account, which I was on earlier this week, has been locked. I can't tell why, as all I've done is support stuff and post a few comments about how much I like the projects. This happened to anybody else?

I'm think the modular construction site would be popular in the local Lego club. They always seem to have a building that is "under construction" in the city but without obvious work signs.

I'd like to see the medieval set go through to help make up for this year's medieval joke sets.

As far as those based on intellectual property, I don't usually look anymore.

How about another original idea?

Lego are hypocrites they ask for original ideas even though they make tones of remakes of Star Wars sets!!

Love the construction site and Cavern Club, but jmjt4, Paul McCartney is left-handed - his Hofner Violin Bass needs flipping around ;)

By in United Kingdom,

Of the many projects on LEGO Ideas, there are not many truly original ideas. Even then the original ideas can struggle to attract support because people have to catch a new idea rather than being offered something they are more familiar with.
Within some existing licences there are gaps where there really should be a LEGO set. I was disappointed not to see a working LEGO BB-8 droid last Christmas, considering the potential educational value in line with the LEGO company values (compared to a ready-made toy that would not have held my interest), so I decided to have a go: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/126131/updates

I think The Beatles stage set is fantastic. Looks great, would love to have something like that displayed, could throw in other bands as well. A stage or music related set is something I've always wanted to do.

I thought the construction block set looked really cool. Probably too substantial for an Ideas set though, that would be really expensive, but it would be fun to build on your own. Would add something different into the modular scene.

I built a modular add on set to add something different also, would be far less pieces so thought it would be right in that Ideas price range. With 470 pieces and a baseplate you could freshen up your city scape with a city garden! I'm into seeing people grow food and especially in urban areas I think it's a really neat thing I'm seeing more of so thought a Lego creation of this notion would be refreshing. https://ideas.lego.com/projects/106746

The Modular Construction site is very interesting ! Clever build, nice details (brick plan, furniture ...)
I also like the medieval pharmacy because it will fit the medieval village, but the roof mount need to be improve. There is not enough furniture and play features inside in my opinion.
