Design a banner for Brickset and win a set of CMF S15
Posted by Huw,
We are launching two competitions as part of our Super Heroes Month today. The first is a little bit different, something we haven't tried before. We want you to design a Super Heroes themed banner to replace the grey stripe at the top of the page above the main menu.
The winner will receive a set of Series 15 Collectable Minifigures and their design will be displayed on the site for the last two weeks of March.
The graphic needs to be 1180px wide by a maximum of 250px deep. The current one is about 95px deep.
The search box and text above it will need to remain where they are at the top of the image but should not be included on your graphic: just leave space for them.
The logo can be moved or resized, or indeed replaced with something else entirely. The word Brickset (in any font) should of course appear somewhere though, and you should ensure that no copyrights are violated (so, no Marvel logo, for example). You can sign it somewhere so everyone knows it's your work should you wish.
To enter, add your image to our competition pool on Flickr or post to Instagram with hash tag #BricksetCompetition by midnight Friday 18th March. The winner will be decided over the weekend and posted on the site on the 21st. We very much look forward to seeing what you come up with!
If you have any questions, ask in the comments or send me a PM.
CapnRex101 will post details about a more conventional building competition later today so stay tuned...

Sounds very interesting! I'm pretty bad at making such pictures and I'm not into Super Heroes stuff, but I look forward to seeing the entries!
Good competition, no copyright issue here?
"...the logo can be moved or resized, or indeed replaced with something else entirely." -> Marketing no-go.

^^ Yes, "you should ensure that no copyrights are violated"
^ I do not see that as an issue. Obviously the banner needs to indicate that the site is Brickset but it if does it in a way that is different to to how it's done now, that is fine.
If the three-plate logo is incorporated somewhere then it's likely that it will count in the entry's favour.
Is it allowed to use images from Super Heroes and edit the images or is that a violated copyright?
Yes, that will be OK. The main thing to avoid is using company logos and so on.
Interesting sounding competition, and I think I want to give it a try since I do a lot of art and design things in my spare time, but I'm just confused as to what would and would not violate copyright. I understand logos are a no-go, but what about original drawings of character likenesses and (self-taken) pictures of Super Heroes LEGO sets/MOC's and minifigures? Are they okay?
Also, do you need to put the search box and text above in the banner entry itself, or can you just leave sufficient space for it?
Otherwise, I assume that, within the rules of the contest of course, using the Brickset logo and so on, you have free rein to do whatever you want, be it drawing, photomanipulation, whatever? :o)
Marvel AND DC?
Should this be drawn or built?
Added mine. :)
For a moment I was trying to think of ways to make a brickset logo that looks like the marvel or DC logos. . . then I pictured the DC logo with a big 'BS.' Yeah, not the best idea.
@TheOneVeyronian, everything you mention is OK.
Marvel AND DC, Drawn OR built and photographed, your choice.
Thank you! ;)
Would you prefer the logo be off to the left or is centered ok? Keeping the search bar in mind.
@Putters, great start! It wasn't clear before, so I've made it so, that the search box and text above should not be included in your image but you should leave space for them, at the top right.
^ Anywhere you like. I must confess to not giving a lot of thought as to how the image will appear when not viewed on a handheld device, though, so design for a desktop that's >= the width of the graphic.
Hmm.. maybe if whoever wins, you could contact them to fix their size if it doesn't fit or something?
First, I'm in the USA, do I still qualify, and secondly, is it cool if I just design the logo on a sheet of paper and post the pic? Or would you prefer I use a design program?
@Huw Ok, I thought that would be the case. Resubmitted.
^^^ Yes, absolutely.
^^ Yes, you qualify. Given it'll be displayed on screen computer generated is preferred but I won't rule out hand drawn entries, but they will need to be scanned and resized appropriately. I won't have the time, or skills, to convert a drawing into a digital image.
Must it with lego figures images or can i use images from real super heroes?
You can.
Is it limited to one entry per person?
If its posted on the 21st, wouldn't it only be up for one week then?
^^ No
^ I'll probably leave it up for 2 weeks which take us into April slightly.
Can I just Email it to you guys? and if I can what Email should I send it to?
Wow, I got my entry finished quicker than I thought I would! I hope this is okay for the contest and doesn't violate any copyrights: https://www.flickr.com/photos/theoneveyronian/25388123032/in/dateposted-public/
Some of the text information at the top might overlap the forehead but I've overlaid it and it seems to be fine and readable. If this wins and readability is an issue, I can easily go and lighten areas where the text will be anyway :o)
^ perfect, just what's required!
Already some excellent entries...
@burkie - lol !
I'm seeing that several of the banners people have submitted are just the banners on LEGO.com Products... http://www.lego.com/en-us/dccomicssuperheroes
Is the 1180 correct? That seems weird. Most monitors are 1080 or 1224, aren't they?
Thanks @huw this was fun!
how do you rescale the image for the required size?
Here is my entry https://www.flickr.com/photos/131430253 @N03/25770738891/in/pool-bricksetcompetitions/ oh and I can not seem to see it in the brickset pool if I am not logged into flicker .... I have no clue how to do anything on flicker so I must not be doing something right haha.
Do I have to make it on a certain site

that is what it says
Hmmm, I guess the deadline is already passed, isn't it?
