LEGO Ideas Second 2015 Review results
Posted by CapnRex101,
The latest LEGO Ideas review results have been announced on the LEGO Ideas blog in the last few minutes and I suspect they will prove very popular!
Two projects have been approved in this cycle for release in late 2016 and early 2017 respectively. Find out which ones after the break...
The Caterham Super Seven has been commented on very frequently over the past few months and I am certain that many Brickset readers will be glad of its selection. I look forward to seeing the set on shelves!
The brick-built Adventure Time figures set seems like a sure winner. The animated series is enormously popular and a set based on the show is bound to prove popular as well. Evidently LEGO were able to acquire the license and I think there is every chance we will see additional Adventure Time sets in future.
What is your reaction to these results?

Holy Guacamole a Caterham! I would definitely get one.
Very glad to see the Caterham get through!
YES!!!!!!! CATERHAM!!!!!!
I'm surprised Adventure Time made it. Considering what subjects have been covered in it, not to mention "princess embryo"...
Cool on the Caterham. I hate adventure time though...
Caterham is cool. Not excited about the other though.
Oh my glob, I'm totally digging Adventure Time minifigs, isn't it...obvi?
I love Adventure Time but I would've liked for the Stay Puft Marshmellow man or the Indominus Rex to have made it through instead. Looking forward to the Caterham though.
Was only thinking over the last week, where's the Ideas Results?
YES! Caterham! I can't wait for this set. Much like the VW Camper Van, I'll be modding 1 or 2 with colour variants.
As for Adventure Time, not interested at all.
How can people hate Adventure Time?!?!
The Caterham, wow! It's not something I'm big into, but it's also a gorgeous model. If the production version is equally as beautiful and a good value, it'll be very hard to pass on.
Good to see these were both finally announced!
Adventure Time is also getting 3 Dimensions pack so it only seemed perfect.
Car seems boring so no thanks.
Can't wait to see the next Ideas set announced. ;)
Really happy that the Caterham got through. Yes, it's a license and yes it's a car, but being a kit-car makes it kinda fitting, doesn't it? And it's a very well designed model. I'm sure Carl is working closely with the set designers to make sure it's not altered too much.
Adventure time means nothing to me personally but looks like a natural fit for Lego.
Pity Lego Physics didn't make it. Might have made a nice education set.
I think I never heard about Adventure Time. Is it a UK or US thing? Or would I need to have/be a child? I'll go and do some research...
But I'm all hyped for the Caterham already! I just love Lego cars / vehicles. And this one is a fantastic model. Yes, there will be changes to the production model, yes it's likely a little less great in the end. But this is a sure buy for me!
Two sets I won't have to get.
Really looking forward to the Caterham. The scale is perfect to go along with the Creator Expert vehicles. Strong showings for the next review stage. I'd certainly like to see the Yellow Submarine, Concorde, or Saturn V.
Fantastic news for Carl! I'll definitely be getting the Caterham. I'm actually quite surprised that Adventure Time got through, but then I guess I don't know anything about it...
I hate Adventure Time, but I DEFENITLEY am picking it up, for 2 reasons: The Nyan Unicorn thing and the huge change of new ball joint colors!
GIANT yawn. Lego already makes plenty of car models and that show has no appeal to me. TooManyLicensedIdeasSets
Congratulations Carl!
I just yelled YES! aloud when your project was revealed! For some reason the text under the video wasn't there, so I watched to find out. So chuffed for you and we'll be buying your set for sure. Caterham's for Carl :o) Congratulatory drink next event I see you at. Congratulations again.
Glad the Caterham made it, will be very tempted by that.
Wouldn't be surprised if the AT ended up being a CMF series
Caterham Super 7 has me hoping that the only reason we didn't get the Corvette is that it's already being developed internally.
I was also surprised that IDEAS is still a thing. I completely forgot all about it since the review periods take so long, plus I haven't been interested in most models they build.
I'll have to wait and see the final product before I make any other judgments, but likely I can pass on these. Although a Dimensions Adventure Time set may prove popular with the daughter, granted she hasn't watched it in a long time.
Glad Carl got a vehicle through! The Caterham seems to be a good fit for LEGO, being a kit car. However, I wonder how well it will actually sell. I may pick one up. Not a fan of many of the others from this cycle (or the next). I think the Maze set, and the Exo Suit are better examples of what Ideas is supposed to be.
If I'm not mistaken, that Caterham will probably be the largest piece count Ideas set should Lego stay true to the original design. These are good times!
Mmm, catered ham.
2 set's,
dont know about one of them.
and the cars look good. but, it would be starting a new theme if i get them.
will think about it.
if i do get them, then i well find my self needing to get the VW camper van and The Mini
By the way, that "pick a model" in the background is a little behind the times. That would have been cool to have included the next model as an easter egg in the video.
Way to go Carl and richly deserved. I would say lets have a late one in Manchester but we are doing that anyway!
I want to see that huge Concorde or Saturn V make it, more of the true-to-life space and aviation sets would be really cool to see. They are currently in review, it will be interesitng to see other sets announced.
I quite like these results! I have the the Creator T1, Cooper and F40 so a Caterham will fit in my collection of cars quite nicely. I can understand why some folk don't like Adventure Time but it's a winner with my kids and I've become a fan. I just hope they stay with the 'brick-built' idea rather than just another box of minifigs
Pretty disappointed with these results. The "Little Prince" set would have been a great fit, and with the upcoming movie release the timing would be ideal. Of course, any modular buildings would have been a welcome addition, too. The Adventure Time set seems likely to sell well and spin off into a sub-line, so it makes sense. I have no use for vehicles that aren't in minifigure scale, so the Caterham is a total miss in my book (although I know it will be popular with some).
I'm expecting to be disappointed with the next round as well, but if Lego happens to surprise me and produce the Beagle I will be happy to pay whatever they ask for it.
Fantastic news about Carl's Caterham; I've very happy to see it selected & can see myself buying a few of them to customise (that's kind of the point of a kit-car, isn't it?).
Why are comments sometimes posted in the big black hole instead of here? Just lost a large text update again, twice. Happens very regularly to me and others. Very frustrating.
Caterham! Super! Let's see how they are going to legalize this build :-) will probably buy.
Adventure time... Had to google the source material. I don't get it. Lego models are weak but may be nice part packs.
Not interested in either of these but the Caterham model definitely captures the car beautifully.
I hope the Concord is made; it's iconic and sorely missed. I'm glad I took the opportunity to splurged a flew on it once when I had the chance. This world sorely needs faster flights. With the loss of the Concord and Space Shuttle we've almost gone backwards in this area of technology.
I love that the Caterham made it through . . . But Adventure Time has me a bit baffled. The Little Prince has far superior build, the license holders behind it, and it is one of the top selling books of all time.
^Not to mention the sheer simpleness of the builds . . . I mean, It literally has very little appeal outside of Adventure Time fans. Especially if it ends up being a $50 or $60 set.
I really thought that the LOTR set would made it. I'm very disapointed by what lego is offering.
Adventure Time seems like a good candidate for a set. Its wacky cartoon character designs are fairly well suited to brick-built characters, and it's a show that's popular with kids and adults alike. Surprised at all the cynicism I've seen about it. I'm not really an Adventure Time fan (never seen a full episode), but I've encountered enough Adventure Time fans and references around the Internet to know that it's as well-loved as it is for a good reason.
The Caterham Super Seven looks great, but it's a car I've pretty much never heard of before now. Maybe that's on account of living in the U.S.
@iconoclass, @Brick Belt, @jmjt4: thanks for the positive comments on my project inspired by "The Little Prince." I knew going into this that the large majority of projects get rejected, but still was very disappointed today to hear the news that it didn't make the cut. I greatly appreciate every one of the 10,000 people who voted for the project, including the many members of Brickset, and also Brickset itself for publishing a fantastic article on the proposal: http://brickset.com/article/14991.
I am very happy for the creators of Adventure Time and the Caterham - your builds were very creative and well done. I expect that I'll be picking up both of them when they are released.
Ideas seems to be going downhill recently... they refused the Stay-puff marshmallow man and the Natural History Museum, both of which I would have bought. I might pick up a Caterham but for the most part... my shelves and wallet will be thanking me this time
@Matt89190: No, Adventure Time will not it will not be a bunch of moulds, because the project is Brick Built Adventure Time Figures, so Lego couldn't just make them into specialized figures like in Angry Birds, because that isn't the project. Anyway, Lego can't even put new moulds into Ideas sets, so the characters will have to be brick built.
Mathematical! Come on, grab your friends, it's LEGO Adventure Time!
Excited for the Adventure Time stuff. Not big on brick-built figures, but hopefully like with minecraft it'll lead to minifig scale stuff. Afterall, the target audience of AT and lego is essentially the same.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Caterham!!!!I'll sure buy it!It's the best ideas set I have seen!!!!!!!
@Matt89190: It's been a stated fact for a long time that LEGO does not produce new piece molds for Cuusoo/Ideas sets. One note concerning it:
"Proposals for new LEGO parts (of any material), competing brand building bricks, or 'aftermarket' elements manufactured and sold by any third party are not allowed."
https://ideas.lego.com/guidelines
Sonic screwdriver came to be probably due to Dimensions, which is separate from Ideas.
Some are oddly disappointed at failure of things like LOTR projects or the library. It's been a clearly stated fact for a long time that projects linked to IPs already existing within LEGO have considerably lesser chance of passing in the Review (like LOTR or SW or JP)... Has never happened has it? Also Cuusoo/Ideas sets have NEVER been over 1,000 pieces. The maze with 769 pieces is the largest so far. So not much chance for those 2 LOTR projects or big modulars like the library either (I wish this would change though). And for this reason I was a little surprised for Caterham: it tests the limits of the piece count. Curious to see how the final product will turn out.
@Matt89190: I agree, they have strayed far from the original ideas, but I think making the characters into special moulds would be too far. I know the Minecraft Micro World was very, very different from the original submission, but I think that was because the submission only wanted a Lego Minecraft set, not one that was specifically based off the model in that submission.
About the Sonic Screwdriver in Doctor Who, they cheated :) They released it in the Doctor Who level pack from Dimensions first, (Dimensions is allowed new parts) then released it in the Doctor Who Ideas set a while later, so technically, it wasn't new when it was in the Ideas set.
@Matt89190: What makes you say that? The project was for brick-built figures. I guess LEGO could arguably make specialty molds for that, since Adventure Time is rumored to be in an upcoming LEGO Dimensions expansion, but I don't expect the LEGO Group to use that as an excuse to fundamentally change the nature of the project.
And I don't think it's hypocritical for LEGO to approve licensed projects when they happen to be the most viable ideas. Wanting to see more original projects shouldn't mean lowering their standards for what makes such a project viable, nor should it mean rejecting license-based projects on principle.
So now we know why it took so long to announce, they were negotiating the adventure time license. Fair enough.
We also know why they will be announcing the next review already "later this spring", because it's an easy choice: none of the above.
Very happy! :) Shame Lego don't produce enough pink bricks to mod it to my car.
@redgreenblue: If the rumors about Adventure Time LEGO Dimensions packs later this year are legit, then they wouldn't have had to delay these review results to negotiate the licensing agreement, because that agreement would've been settled months ago.
I was hoping for stay Puff Marshmellow guy. However I think lego will produce that anyway, Makes sense.
I will get the kit car being a fan of the British TV show, The Prisoner.
hope the nautilus makes it through.
Thrilled for the Caterham--a good friend of mine used to race one in amateur sports car races (yes, in the U.S.!) so a Lego version will remind me of good times past as well as being a great companion to my stable of Ferraris! I don't know anything about Adventure Time but it looks like a classic Ideas set whose appeal exactly balances that of the Caterham. Loved several of the other projects but knew they were all long shots--the only modular-like Ideas proposal I got my hopes up about was the Natural History Museum, and when that didn't get accepted I pretty much gave up on any project of that size.
I'm excited about both of the winners and will likely buy both.
Oh my Glob, there are rumors of Adventure Time addons for Dimensions? Mathematical! That would be a perfect addition to the game!
I can't say I care for any of those two, but then it looks like 20000 Leagues is still being reviewed...
Interested to hear what does a Brickset team think.
Caterham, yes! Never been happier about any Ideas review result!
I hope the Caterham ends up the same scale as my F40.
Lego+Adventure Time! >:( Is Lego crazy or what. No offence to Adventure Time fans.
kinda disappointed. The cars are completely a set Lego would have already done even without Ideas, and Adventure Time, although a cool idea, seems a bit odd. Little prince would have been amazing to see produced in mass and Rivendell would have been a brilliant last "hoo-rah" for the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit themes. just sayin'.
I like the caterham. Glad to see it approved.
The Adventure Time set is really confusing. I'm in love with that show, but I dislike the idea of buildable figures. They're clunky. Rather just have custom, true mini-figs. I really wish they made the AT tree house someone submitted a while back that got 10,000 votes. That was how I discovered ideas (or cuusoo at the time). It was amazing, I wish i could have it. The builder had to scrap it for mini versions to fit lego's guidelines which was a shame, but still preferred his sets to this. Oh well, maybe something better will come down the line.
The Caterham is righteous and worthy. I am astonished Adventure Time made it though after the previous heartbreaking dismissal. I just hope they come up with a better looking solution for Jake, as he deserves it, and I especially hope they don't make all of the arms half gray because of the socket parts. There must be a 2x2 round bacon pancake tile. Furthermore, I hope there will be more LEGO AT in the future, no matter what the form!
The cars are cool... no opinion on Adventure Time, as I don't watch it.
But what I want to know is what didn't make the cut?
Adventure Time is very popular in the US and will surely be a hit with kids. ...but it's a shame they're brick-built figures. Minifigures would be a lot more popular.
Caterham looks really nice, but I'll be skipping it myself.
I'll be passing on both sets.
Yes! Caterham! I will definitely get this! As for the adventure time, I am not excited. I wish they chose the Little Prince set, though.
I said before when I saw the Caterham project that the designs were lovely and they may just be cool enough for me to buy a car set, which I don't do very often. It would make a great desk or workbench piece, or display on a shelf in pride of place.
Although the brick built approach is admirable and well executed with regards to accuracy I don't understand the love for Adventure Time as a programme/theme. I've seen roughly 6-8 episodes and I didn't have a clue what was going on the whole time. Just lots of flailing limbs and eye-melting colours. I can see why it would appeal to kids but I don't see where the adult reverence comes from.
This news is algebraic!
Looking forward to seeing the final caterham before I make my decision on a purchase. I really only wanted the dinosaur, but once Rex had been turned down, it was a no brainer that this one would't get through. However, the next review makes me nervous, there are so many great sets in the next review that I would like :) Wonderful to see so many others happy with the choices...
Only one word for the AT project: ACCEPTABLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE!
@Clone I'm with you, even though I personally think the AT project looks neat. Ideas needs to officially die. It probably won't while its still a useful viral marketing platform, but the dream of what it could have been died a long time ago. I line its death up with the huge design letdown and mishandling of stock with the Exo Suit. That put the nail in the coffin and we're all just going through the motions now.
@The Green Brick Giant Who could hate Adventure Time? I'm guessing people who like the Angry Birds sets.
Congratulations Carl!
No disrespect to their respective creators but this round is a double pass for me. Little Prince however would have been a Day 1 purchase. Here's hoping Bricklinking it will be an option!
Have you guys ever considered a spin-off site called bricksexy exploring the sensual side of Lego?
No?
Ok, well, as an aside these sets will not be ones I buy but I do like them. Especially the caterham as I'm still not really familiar with adventure time.
Great to see Lego have approved 2 models. Not selecting anything this time round would've surely killed Ideas I believe. Personally I am really exited to hear the Caterham has been chosen. A definite must-have for me and I am curious how close the official set will be to the proposed fan model, cause that one's unusually detailed compared to anything designed by Lego themselves so far.
Can't wait to get the Caterham, but I have no idea what adventure time is!
For anyone not familiar with the Caterham, just YouTube top gear Caterham and enjoy.
Extremely pleased the Caterham made it, looking forward to adding that to my collection! I like the Adventure Time set, but not something collectable for me.
Glad the Caterham made it. Will be a brilliant addition to the current VW Camper van and Mini Cooper sets.
I guess Lego are finding a gap in the market, never heard of adventure time but maybe they are for the younger market, Caterham will be a interesting addition. Gutted the Mr Stay Puff didn't get approved was looking forward to adding him to my Ghostbusters collection. Again showing my age as even with the new movie just around the corner maybe he's for the older generation from a 80's movie.
Both are super easy passes to for me
The car is cool. It should look good with the VW and the Mini.
Happy for Adventure Time fans, even if I find the show to be intolerable hipster garbage. But maybe that's just me.
Still waiting for my first Ideas set purchase. Some of the ones passed on looked really good. I really liked the Western Modulars idea awhile back. Still bummed on that rejection.
Two Lord of the Rings sets rejected.?
It looks like we really will never get to see the brilliant sets Lego should have made, instead of the crappy sets they did make.
Stay Puft Man would have been an Ideal Ideas set to go with the GBHQ set.
But maybe Lego are working on sets to go with the new Movie?
I might buy the Caterham
but I think I can miss the Adventure Time Mixel-ish brick built figures.....
I definitely want to sea the Beagle made by Lego. It might have a chance unless TLG are already planning a new ship for another theme.
Adventure Time is getting a full-length movie (via WarnerBros) in 2017, so that would help boost set interest. The characters having varying personalities and situations lend to LEGO type of creativity; plus the Treehouse and Castle will be good to build.
The set designers will have plenty of existing fan creations to use for ideas, like the brick-built BMO, and OchreJelly's pre-Ideas (Cuussoo) versions: https://www.flickr.com/photos/legomymamma/6499426891/
When I read the article about the new balloon bottoms, my first thought was Jake! ;-)
I look forward to building Marceline - the Vampire Queen!
How am I not surprised that Adventure Time was (most likely) approved due to TLG acquiring Adventure Time's license for Dimensions? I doubt they went through much trouble, after all, they do have an existing partnership with Cartoon Network already, for Mixels.
I myself am happy with this review. I am neither a car fanatic not a fan of Adventure Time, but I am happy that this time they took on a new licensed project and also chose an original project. The Caterham will certainly appeal to AFOLs who appreciate display models and the Adventure Time will appeal to the many kid fans of the show. Well done LEGO Ideas team!
Oh man I'm super excited for both of these. The Caterham is a gorgeous model and I love Adventure Time. I am a little surprised it got through, as it can get kind of dark for a children's show.
Awesome. Now don't ruin it like you did the DeLorean!
In my opinion, I love the Lego Model Cars. I totally despise of the Lego Adventure time figures. You can't play with them and it is so lame. Why would any teen play with that kind of set? That looks like it should be a Lego set for toddlers like Lego Nexo Knights. (a knock off version of futuristic castle) I am so heartbroken that yet again Lego Ideas had to pick the worst sets out of the best ones like The Lego Lord of the Rings elf tree house, Modular Library, etc. (sigh)
@peterlmorris: I don't think LEGO tends to worry about IPs they license being "dark". If so they probably wouldn't have made LEGO Harry Potter sets for the last couple movies, or sets based on superhero movies like The Dark Knight and Man of Steel. I think the content they consider objectionable tends to be stuff that would get a movie rated R or a show rated TV-MA. A PG rated movie or TV-PG rated show should generally be innocent enough for a LEGO set or theme.
@Brick King: You're kidding yourself if you think Nexo Knights sets are for toddlers. They're aimed at ages 7–14, the same age range as most Ninjago, Legends of Chima, or Ultra Agents sets (and higher than most City, Pirates, or Castle sets). If you can't tell a toddler from a seven-year-old, I might be making a mistake by taking anything you say seriously.
But just to give you the benefit of the doubt, I can imagine plenty of teens and adults buying the Adventure Time figures not just to play with them but also for their display value — kind of like the Funko Pop vinyl figurines which are popular with teens and adults (and have included several Adventure Time characters), or like some past LEGO Ideas sets like http://brickset.com/sets/21301-1/Birds.
I have no idea what a Caterham is, and I despise AT, so skip. Seriously, just the commercials make me mute the TV.
Congratulations to the creators, I had a feeling Adventure Time would make it and it's good to see that the Caterham got through, a set not based on something from pop culture. If what people are saying about Adventure Time Dimensions packs are true, then the original submission of brick built figures might be dropped for a minifigure scale set.
I agree that Ideas is dying if not already dead, I haven't checked Ideas or voted for anything in months. Although I do hope that the Saturn 5 or JP Explorer can make it through next time.
well, does that mean Lego designers are working on a stay puft m man outside of Ideas - just like in the case of GBHQ?
@johnnie_tee: Could be, or it could be that they just decided it wasn't viable on account of its size. It's made from over 1500 pieces, and I'm not entirely sure that the joints in its legs would be stable enough to meet the LEGO Group's standards for being able to support its own weight.
I have written two distinct comments here and both have disappeared after clicking the "post comment" button.
I am glad that those two sets came out as they were the only ones that seamed to be into the possibility of being Lego products (sad about the Hornet), wonder how long it will be for a Lego Dimensions set about Adventure Time....
Adventure Time? Ugh. Another waste.
Glad lego could pick up an acid-crowd cartoon were people call each other dykes and sociopaths.
@Lordmoral. I had a comment showing for few days that's now disappeared.
I don't think it was offensive either!
I though they would have more decisions
