75828 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 & 2 box art revealed
Posted by TheBrickPal,
The box art for 75828 Ecto-1 & 2, based on this summer's Ghostbusters reboot film, has been revealed. Now is as good a time as any to post about it as a much higher quality version has been put up on Amazon Japan.
The piece count has been revealed as 556, which seems pretty fair compared to its $60 price especially considering licensing costs. The set will officially become available on July 1st, and we will of course be reviewing it closer to its release!
Thanks to my friend CM4Sci for the news.

I've seen better sets in the Ben 10 theme...
although i do wish the original ecto-1 was included with a slimer or something
Looks great!.
Nice box. But the excitement of the set will have everything to do with the movie for me, If I like the movie I may desire the set. As of now, I have no intention of seeing the movie.
I have a feeling this movie is gonna be a dud...
Looks amazing! Lots of great techniques that even improve on the previous Ecto-1. A clever MOCist could potentially take inspiration from this model to give the original Ecto-1 some of these traits like opening doors and extra seating, though the back door might not be an option due to the original's larger back and side windows.
Some people think this new Ecto-1 looks ugly. I disagree. Like the costumes, it looks pretty utilitarian, but I don't think it's a bad thing. I think it helps it feel a little more convincing, if anything, especially for a modern-day reboot. What exterminator do you know who drives a flashy vintage automobile? And that's really what the Ghostbusters are when you get right down to it — supernatural exterminators. Considering how over-the-top and blatantly "toyetic" the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters 2 was, I have no problem with taking the franchise back in a more grounded direction.
Of course the figures look nice and detailed as well, and six figures in a set this size is not a bad value! The piece count is not bad either.
The box art looks nice but the "2016 movie" tagline feels kinda tacky. People who know Ghostbusters will know what movie this is tied to as soon as they see the car and characters; no need to shout it at them. And I hope the green slime at the top is just the Amazon.jp preview image being oversaturated, because I don't know how great that shade would look on the actual box. The red also looks sort of oversaturated so it'll probably be better IRL.
No idea how the movie itself will do but I'm optimistic. I enjoyed the trailer and what I've seen of the art direction. If it lets me down, ah well. It wouldn't be the first time a movie has let me down and certainly won't be the last. But a lot of my friends are excited for it, and the weak criticisms I've heard around the internet leave me profoundly unshaken.
60 bucks for the US, but now that I'm based in Japan, I'm stuck with the JPY 10,238 price. That comes out to 94 dollars with the exchange rate today. By comparison the $60 price is only JPY 6,500. So roughly a 50% mark up here.... I will have to definitely pick this one up US when I go home for vacation this summer
I think the model is better than the first Ecto-1 (at least all four characters can fit inside this one, IIRC), but I spent a crapload of money tracking down the first one, and it kind of annoys me that I'll have to track down this one and sell the first one off again even though the overall design of the first one was better (but lacked play value) which is why I wanted it in the first place. Grrr. Hashtag first world problems.
Waste of bricks.
I don't know why everyone is so 'ehh' on it. It looks good, has 6 mini figures and is 'only' $60.
Is this the only set we are getting? I was hoping for a theme like The Lone Ranger.
I like it. I'll see the movie. I'll buy this set.
I can't believe that they are even making that piece of crap movie... Anyways who actually wants these mini figures?! Hopefully absolutely no one...
Looks like an ugly, pointless, charmless cash-in that rips the guts out of the original and craps all over its legacy.
Apply that to the film or the LEGO or both. Your choice.
As much I am not pumped up on movie I think this set is great.
I love the characters- aspecialy new hairpieces!
I like the set as a set, the movie will be terrible ordeal, don't wanna even try :)
Love how people are calling a movie crap based on a couple of trailers. Saddens me people are this judgmental and whinging about this already. Watch the film, then judge.
^ Bearing in mind that trailers usually feature the best bits and are designed to entice people to see the movie, this really doesn't bode well. Still ... at least we get to Melissa McCarthy being slobby, obese and unfunny. Not seen *that* before... ;-)
As for the set, it really is a bit of a missed opportunity. Sure, we can fit in more minifigs ... but just *look* at it! Less detail on top, a pug-ugly front end, ... NOT good.
I like it, and I'll be getting it. Love the new hairpieces in particular. Not sure if I will see the movie but that's because I rarely see anything at the cinema rather than a pre-judgment of the film (haven't seen the trailer either).
Nice vehicle but as I'm refusing to have anything to do with this new pile of dross, I'll not be picking this up (and that's not because they're female; it's because it's an unnecessary remake). Besides, isn't this more expensive than the original Ecto-1?
Seriously, have you seen the original movie lately? It has not aged well.
Great set, the new movie will be awesome.
I am very much against the "new Ghostbusters" movie. But i must say i like this Lego set :)
I'll be at the LEGO Store on July 1st to purchase this set, however I'm not in a huge rush to see the movie until home release. That green slime on the top and the '2016 Movie!' sign on the bottom left are horrible, otherwise the main artwork is fantastic along with the set! I particularly like how the design of this new vehicle opens up opportunities to improve the small number of cons from the original model (21108.)
Not sure why, but not a fan. ah well, many other sets :)
Everyone moans about new sets but will still buy them anyway
I'm also not keen on the "2016 movie!" thing on the box, for the reasons other people have said, but otherwise it looks fine. I'm glad I held off on getting the original, as it'll be nice to have an Ecto-1 that can actually accommodate four Ghostbusters! Really looking forward to getting the minfigs too! A Slimer would've been nice, but I guess that would've pushed the price up even more...
Is Slimer even in the reboot?
@Adambrick123,
There's also leaked script info which, frankly, sounds absolutely atrocious. The leaked e-mails from the Sony hack also have the director for the movie talking about his vision for it, and it's pretty much a slap to the face to Ghostbusters fans. Also, Bill Murray didn't want to go through with a sequel for the longest time, Harold Ramis died and less than a year later they're okay with a new one? Terrible timing. That's pretty dang offensive to fans who waited years for a sequel to the originals to be greenlit. The story they had for Ghostbusters 3 was a good one, and ended up in the Ghostbusters video game.
On top of all that, Leslie Jones is pretty much the only cast member to be defending the film, all the others are basically remaining silent.
That being said, I agree with others that the boxart looks pretty bad. Obviously I want nothing to do with the minifigures, but the car itself isn't terrible. If they hadn't already released the classic car, I might have been interested in this to MoC it into the original.
Slimer is in the new movie.
I had no desire to see the movie but after reading all the comments here I think I'll see it five times on opening weekend.
Does nobody here actually want to see this movie?! Wow. I do.
This looks like a solid set--all the main characters plus an enemy, good price here in 'Murica, much more play value than the other one.
@Brick Belt,
Melissa McCarthy has defended the film as well.
I honestly think that the demon is a cool minifigure due to how useful something like that can be for MOCS.. I could care less about the rest of the set. Hey at least we still have Ghost Rider folks!
As for the movie it's a huge case of if it ain't broke don't fix it. The original was fine, and still holds up well today.
Gotta love the folks who just know for a fact that the movie will be bad, even though Paul Feig and McCarthy have a streak of critically acclaimed box office successes going. Enjoy being miserable - I'm excited for the movie and will pick up the set to go with my other Ghostbusters sets.
A lot of sexists are commenting on here...
A shame because we're ONLY suppose to be talking about the Lego set. You know, one for children of the younger generation to play with and not really intended for those that grew up in the 1980's.
Stick to just talking about the set folks and not movie pre-release judgments (keep agenda talk out of something innocent such as a Lego set that happens to be a tie-in)!
It's simple. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
Aside from the lack of enthusiasm surrounding the movie, the set doesn't look all that bad. Well built and some nice pieces included. But since it's heavily attached to a movie negatively received by the majority of Ghostbusters fans ... yeah, I could see why people are disinterested.
I think the set looks good, but it all depends how the actual car etc looks in the film. The Ecto-1 was great IMO, but then the designer had years of exposure to the original film to get it right. I hope the film is good, and a success, but I will be waiting to see how true to life it is. As another comment has mentioned, it is a toy for children and they won't be as critical as us! We should remember that this film is brand new and if we are honest, most of us people who watched the original, will always be critical of new films in the same genre, but for those new to Ghostbusters, I think it will be good.
Ain't afraid of no ghost.
I like the set. Just don't know if I need another Ecto. Probably a pass for me. This could change after seeing it in store or reading a review. I don't know why you have to like the movie to buy the set after all its Lego!
@mac78251
Um... buddy just because a lot of people are not excited for this movie doesn't make them sexist in the slightest.
I'm not seeing the movie, not because I'm against female leads (because I'm not) but the premise behind the film I feel is a symptom of a larger problem in Hollywood; a lack of creativity. That said I think there is a lot of good in this set. I may even go as far as to say it may be in the top ten best sets of 2016 for me. Printing is fantastic on the figs and the hair pieces are exceptionally great and are parts we probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise had Lego not acquired the license. Honestly I give this set a 10/10 for what it is.
Love the minifigs! Not so sure about the Ecto-1 model.
I like the original movies but at the end of the day it's a story about people who catch ghosts so I'm not that bothered either way about the reboot. I have a daughter so I think it's nice to have an action comedy with an all female cast that she can watch and identify with if she so chooses. My son will still have the other 90% of action movies with a predominantly male cast to relate to.
But seriously....that new Ecto-1 model is kinda ugly. Will probably get it for the minifigs and Ecto-2.
Meh, I'm not even going to see the movie....
I actually think that this set looks rather fun, but I feel that the movie is not needed and a waste of
time and money. But ya know just my thoughts.
