The LEGO Movie Sequel pushed to 2019

Posted by ,

It was too good to be true...

The LEGO Movie Sequel, the sequel (evidently) to 2014's incredibly successful The LEGO Movie and directed by Rob Schrab, already had its release date changed before. While originally set to be released in May 2017, it was then pushed back to May 18, 2018.

Now, Warner Bros. Pictures has officially set and confirmed the release date of February 8, 2019; exactly five years and one day after the release of the first film. At this point it will be surprising if we really do see it on that day!

At least we have The LEGO Batman Movie to look forward to next year, on February 10, 2017, and The LEGO Ninjago Movie on September 22, 2017.

So they're doing a Star Wars: Episode 7 (first LM), Rogue One (spinoff), Episode 8 (second LM).

Just like the Godzilla (2014) sequel....

Awww. But yes, it's better than unleashing a rushed, horribly flawed movie on the world...

I would like to have a rant about the hobbit since it has been brought up, first of all they used far too much CGI, what made the lotr special was the amazing use of prosthetics
That half troll in the battle of the five armies, come on!
Looked like a man's head mashed on a babies body!
Im glad they took their time so the Lego movie 2 doesn't look like this

Eh...
I kinda wished they didn't do Ninjago and went straight to The LEGO Movie sequel. That may have been a better idea due to it The LEGO Movie having much more of an audience with even non-LEGO fans rather than something like Ninjago.

This is actually bad news.
The longer a film is pushed back the worse it usually is, due to rewrites, recasting, reinvesting, and change of directors, editors, etc.
Then if things go badly wrong we end up with something like the reboot of Fantastic Four.

I think they probably ought to start again with completely different characters and story. Just like they start again with new Lego products.

Being an animator , i know it takes on average 4-5years to create an animated film from start to finish..... And if other projects get moved, ofcourse that changes things.

@Lego_Fox: I think the long gap between The LEGO Movie and its sequel is deliberate, both to give them more time for animation and so they can explore a different stage of Finn's childhood.

Besides, there's gonna be the LEGO Batman Movie next year too, which should have plenty of crossover appeal with people who aren't already LEGO fans. And Ninjago is probably one of the best original LEGO IPs for a theatrical movie, due to being one of their top five themes and one that already has a richly established world and characters to draw from.

Just an FYI I hate Ninjago and can,t believe that they are putting off the release of a sure-to-be-amazing movie for a piece of garbage movie about magic ninjas >:(

But yaknow just My opinion.

@BrickyMcBrick: Considering that Ninjago was one of the five top-selling LEGO themes last year, clearly there are a lot of people with different (some might even say better) tastes than yours. The LEGO Ninjago movie is for them.

So if they needed that long then why the initial released date?

By in United States,

Wow, Rob Schrab is directing it? He's come a long way since Scud the Disposable Assassin.

Just wait for Warners to push Ninjago to February 2018 so they can have a full year in between LEGO releases.

I like to hear that - better the Pixar way than Ubisoft / EA.

It's ready when it's ready. Not a single day before.

@Farnold

I actually really enjoyed the Hobbit movies...

It's funny, I used to remember a time when you didn't know about a theatrical release until less than 12 months before it actually happened...

If TLG were aiming to make a movie based on one of their own in-house IPs (bearing in mind it needed time to be successful) Ninjago is probably the best choice for now. It's a shame it couldn't have been an Exo Force or Rock Raiders Movie given the timing. Just imagine an Exo Force anime! I would imagine an Elves film would be pretty popular though if given a chance.

@TheRancor I agree, an exo-force flick would be pretty awesome, especially if it was actually in 2D anime style.

Not really sure why Ninjago gets so much hate; as someone who isn't too big a fan of most of LEGO's liscensed themes, I'm just glad that an unlicensed theme is getting so much attention.

Besides, I guess as a Ninjago fan myself I just wish that there was a little less anger towards the theme and those who like it. It's just a LEGO theme. And as stated above, there are tons of really popular liscensed themes I don't care about, and I don't go around telling their fans that their opinions are worthless.

By in United States,

@BrickyMcBrick note my earlier comment, but for the record things like Star Wars can also be boiled down to Magic Knight Spacemen and they don't sound real great that way either.

@Aidypie I guess my dislike of Ninjago just spawns from the fact that it's nothing like the classic ninja sets and I don't much like the whole mystic aspect it has to it.

And also note MY earlier comment I stated that it was just MY opinion and mine alone, I have every right to voice it.
