The LEGO Ninjago Movie cast revealed

Posted by ,

I shall begin with saying that this will definitely not be the Ninjago we all know and love. However, it will sure be interesting to see further developments of the film and how it turns out in the end.

The voice cast, revealed via some sort of catalog of Warner Bros' upcoming film slate at Licensing Expo 2016, is...

  • Jackie Chan as Master Wu
  • Dave Franco as Lloyd
  • Michael Peña as Kai
  • Abbi Jacobson as Nya
  • Kumail Ninjiani as Jay
  • Zach Woods as Zane
  • Fred Armisen as Cole

The LEGO Ninjago Movie arrives in theaters on September 22, 2017. Preceding it is The LEGO Batman Movie on February 10, 2017 and following is The LEGO Movie Sequel on February 8, 2019.

Ninjago is the story of six young ninja tasked with defending their island home, called Ninjago. By night, they’re gifted warriors, using their skills and awesome fleet of vehicles to fight villains and monsters. By day, they’re ordinary teens struggling against their greatest enemy: high school.

Very excited for this, I have had a passing interest in the show, a passionate interest in the recent sets (SKYBOUND FTW) and I love most of these actors, very promising!

Michael Peña? As a ninja? Hmmmmm...

"So I was like with this girl and she was my ex and she said like, bro I got this fabulous knowledge of a hidden ninja temple. And I was like, yeah? So she tell me she talked to my cousin Bob, who was an ex-con who said 'girl, Ricki told me bout this Ninja place' and she told me what Ricki told Bob what she told me. And like Ricki says this Ninja place is super cool and this old guy with mad skills lives there! Yeah!"

Oh my gosh, please make it happen. :D

Ugh. I guess I could see hispanic Kai, but Indian Jay?
Not that I really have any interest in Ninjago anyway.

By in United States,

These seem to be some big-name characters, especially Jackie Chan. I'm hesitant to believe this is a final list, but then again the original Lego Movie had some big names with it, so it's possible. But I'm already a big fan of the TV series so the new voices will probably take a while to get used to.

Jackie Chan as Master Wu? You've got to be kidding! That is too good!

@Matt89190: Pakistani, actually. And how much does their race really matter if all you're hearing is their voice? Not only have voice actors (especially white voice actors) been providing voices for other races for decades, but non-licensed minifigures tend to be racially ambiguous to begin with. What really matters here is really the cast's acting ability and performance.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the diversity of this new cast (Kai's VA is Mexican-American, Jay's VA is Pakistani-American, Cole's VA is of Venezuelan/Japanese/German descent, and of course Jackie Chan is Chinese), as well as the fact that most of the actors here come from a comedy background. That worked out well for The LEGO Movie so hopefully it will work out well here also. Naturally, it remains to be seen whether these actors will "get" their characters quite as well as their TV counterparts did, but overall I'm quite optimistic. Change isn't necessarily a bad thing, and it'll be interesting to see a new take on the characters.

Slight correction on the news story: The LEGO Movie Sequel is following The LEGO Ninjago Movie, not preceding it.

Anyway, refraining from sharing this news to BZPower since it might be leaked and some of the details might be tentative. Hoping we get some official announcements about this movie soon, though!

@TheBrickPal - I read that link you just shared and now I'm all the more convinced Michael Penã is perfect. Thanks for sharing!

Should be a fun movie. All the voice actors are funny, not sure about the high school thing but the rest should be good.

By in United States,

has been a really central part of my life it was really one of the first themes that i understood and got excited about when it was announced (i was 9 at the time I'm 14 now) and it has really grown my relationships with my sister who also loves the sets and show I mean i can almost recite from memory the entire first 4 seasons of ninjago thats how many times I've seen it. I have grown really attached to the caracters and show and i am sad to see that all go away with a movie with new voice actors and a completely different plot line.....anyway i feel like i have ranted now and sorry for the lack of punctuation

:O Jackie Chan as Wu? Noooooo. I'm serious. Nooo! I have all the respect in the world for Jackie Chan, having been practically raised on Golden Harvest productions, but his English vocal performances can be pretty flat and his sound is just so, so different from what has been established for all of these years. I actually have no concerns about the others listed above, as I think each has the potential to channel their character's canon personality while bringing a reasonable freshness to the silver screen adaptation. The key word is "potential," though. It could also all go very poorly, or just very different for the sake of being different.

But Michael Pena as Kai that's gonna be fun

I really like this cast. I loved the early Ninjago sets (and newest!) but the show was a real drag. If this can capture some lego movie humor along with perhaps some classing 'kung fu/ninja' movies I will be very excited.

I enjoy the show--not as much as some people, but it is quite entertaining. That said, I don't know who any of these people are aside from Jackie Chan and Michael Pena... so I really don't know how this is going to work. Should be a fun movie, though, unless that butt-ugly concept art shared in that Eurobricks thread is anywhere near the final character designs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why not get the original voice actors? But, that Oky's on Eurobrick was dead-on funny!! Yours was good too,xboxtravis7992, but OKY's ..HAHAHAHAHA!!

By in United States,

I loved the TV show... This stinks.

Though, Kai could be funny. :P

I'm not sure if I'm anticipating this or dreading it.

By in Australia,

If the movie helps clear out the shelf warming Ninjago Lego at the stores, I'm all for it.

I'm not very optimistic about this movie...

I Think this 1 of the biggest goals for both Cartoon Network, LEGO, & WB!

Yes! Jackie Chan! The Drunken Master In A Lego Movie! So hyped!

By in United Kingdom,

What. Wut. Wuuutttt. This is utterly incredible. Like. This cast was made for me. Silicon Valley is one of my favourite shows ever. I love all of this cast.

Absolutely amazing. I cannot wait for this. This is just the best news ever. Wow.

By in United States,

I can not imagine a movie where they completely change the character voices.

By in United Kingdom,

@Aanchir: I just meant that since martial arts is traditionally Japanese, it would be odd to have a bunch of foreign ninja from all over, assuming the film is set somewhere Japan-based.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think Lego base ninjago in a fictional alternative universe ?
So Ninjago has an Asian style and feel, but is not specific to one country from Earth.

Jackie Chan, great to have him in the movie . :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@tamamahm: Well, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have always been portrayed by different voice actors between the cartoons and movies.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now in what messed-up universe is THIS a good idea? Hmm, anyone?
So I guess LEGO felt the need to debase Jackie Chan, I suppose every great actor has to have one horrible, nearly unwatchable movie.
I guess this one's going to be Jackie's. :/

Gravatar
By in United States,

@jmjt4: I get a sneaking suspicion you don't like Ninjago! I dunno, just a hunch. :P

That said, Jackie Chan's been in over 100 movies and among them were some real clunkers, so if you if you think a movie adaptation of one of the most popular and successful LEGO themes is going to be worse than anything else he's ever done in his entire acting career, you may be setting the bar a little low.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Cast sounds great, but a high school setup? Noooo, that's a big mistake.

@Jack Rizzo: That's exactly what's scaring me...
