Ideas Showcase
Posted by FlagsNZ,
Each time I select LEGO Ideas projects I use a different method to filter sets for inclusion in my articles.
This time I have looked at projects that are gathering support and have sorted them by using the most comments option.
People who submit Ideas need to be mindful of the options that supporters must select when placing their support. The criteria are:
- What would you expect this product to cost (USD)?
- How many do you think most people would buy?
- Who do you think this project would be good for? Select all that apply.
- How difficult would you say this project would be to build?
For this article, I have selected eight projects and I have placed my comments for these four criteria against each project. All prices quoted are USD.
I have also linked through to the project owners' Project page as, in many instances, the creators have several worthy projects on the go.
Read on to see whether you agree with my selections.
Arc de Triomphe
By Eiffleman
Eiffleman has produced many iconic buildings, and The Arc de Triomphe is his most successful project that has been submitted to Ideas.
This project has undergone several updates and the current version looks really great.
- At 1300 parts, I see this set retailing between $50 and $99.
- I think people will buy one set, but keen fans may want to get a couple. There are some special parts included.
- I think this set would appeal to male and female adult fans.
- This may be a hard build with some repetition.
This project needs over 2000 supporters in just over 100 days to get to the next milestone.
Medieval Pharmacy
By Nunki-psi
This is another project that has been updated. It now has the title Medieval Apothecary. Apothecary is a medical professional who formulates and dispenses medicines; I am not sure that the name change is helpful.
Nunki-psi has several, similar projects ongoing in Ideas.
The updated project has a reduced parts count although it still remains high at 2347 parts.
- Due to the parts count, I see this set retailing between $100 and $199.
- I think people will buy several sets; this project could be the basis for a medieval village or a more contemporary village having thatched roofed cottages.
- I think this set would appeal to everyone.
- This may be a hard but enjoyable build.
This project currently sits at 4068 supporters and has 101 days' remaining. It needs just over 900 supporters to get past the next milestone; a target which is easily achievable.
The Coral Reef and the Shark
By RothausNoppe
This is an extremely colourful project and is likely to appeal to people who like movies such as Finding Nemo and Finding Dory.
This is the only project by Rothaus Noppe.
This project has the advantage in that it could be scaled back if required.
- It is built on three 32x32 base plates but there is no parts count included in the project details. I see this set retailing between $50 and $99; perhaps it will be scaled back in size.
- I think people will buy several sets; there are lots of attractive parts in a range of colours.
- I think this set would appeal to everyone but is likely to appeal to younger fans.
- This will be an easy and enjoyable build.
This project has 263 days remaining to get to the next milestone; keep an eye out for its popularity.
Lunar Exploration Geological Outpost
By Billyburg
This project will appeal to a vast range of LEGO enthusiasts as it represents a modern twist to the Classic Space theme.
The base is code named Lunar Exploration Geological Outpost; LEGO for short.
The main space ship carries the pennant number LL1923. I have been unable to find the reason for the allocation for this number.
The project has undergone a few updates and overall it reminds me of a SHADO Interceptor from Gerry Anderson's UFO TV series.
- There are six minifigures included in the project, and some rare parts and base plates. I see this set retailing between $50 and $99, but it could be scaled back in size.
- I think people will buy several sets; there are lots of attractive, rare parts.
- I think this set would appeal to everyone but is likely to appeal to male fans of classic space.
- This will be a medium and enjoyable build.
This is my favourite project in the eight showcased this week. It needs over 3000 supporters, but has more than a year to go to reach the next milestone before it expires.
Willy Wonka
This project reminds me of my childhood experience reading Roald Dahl's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
This is one of several movie-related projects that Brickproject 7540 has submitted to Ideas.
- There are six minifigures included in the project. The bus and factory has 1441 parts. I see this set retailing between $50 and $99.
- I think people will buy one set however people wanting to make castles or old buildings may buy several sets.
- I think this set would appeal to everyone but is likely to appeal to younger fans.
- This will be an easy build.
This project needs 1650 supporters within the next 123 days' to reach the next milestone.
Mississippi
By Ravescat
I like this project because of the detail of the build. There are some updates; these improve some of the interior decor.
Ravescat has several worthy projects ongoing in Ideas. Check out the others projects.
- There are a few minifigures included in the project. I see this set retailing between $100 and $199.
- I think people will buy one set.
- I think this set would appeal to everyone, but is likely to appeal to older, male fans.
- This will be a hard build.
This project needs just under 3700 supporters but has over a year left before it expires.
M&M's Chocolate Candy Dispenser
By EDxAS
This is a collaboration between ElectryDragonite & AstonishingStudios.
I like the novelty of this project and can see this sitting in a teenager's bedroom dispensing M&M's.
- I see this set retailing between $100 and $199.
- I think people will buy one set, but perhaps more depending on the number of children in the house.
- I think this set would appeal to everyone but is likely to appeal to teenagers.
- This will be a medium build, but looks as if it must be built accurately to function properly.
This project needs 2400 supporters but has plenty of time to achieve this.
Air & Space Museum: Space Exploration Collection
By LuisPG
LEGO has maintained an ongoing relationship with NASA over the years and LEGO bricks are used aboard the International Space Station to teach science concepts.
This project celebrates the Apollo Soyuz test project of 1975.
This project is LuisPG's most successful project on Ideas. Have a look at some his other projects though.
This project would complement the Apollo 11 Saturn V project that was approved recently.
- This project has four minifigures. I see this set retailing between $50 and $99.
- I think people will buy one set; this is primarily a display set.
- I think this set would appeal to everyone but is likely to appeal to older fans.
- This will be a medium build.
The project needs just over 3000 supporters in 283 days.
That sums up my Ideas Showcase for July.
I am interested in your comments and would like to see your own recommended Ideas projects in the comments below.

Great Ideas, and a well written article! I'm a huge space fan, so that Air & Space Museum is right up my alley. The Arc de Triomphe seriously needs to happen. The owner has started posting instructions in the updates section! Augustus Gloop in minifig form from the Wonka set is a big selling point for me :)
My favorite, by far, is the classic space set. I thought about making a classic space project, but decided against it because I feel there's already better ones out there than what I would put out.
I do have a classic castle set up that people may be interested in, though!

This guy has some neat projects that I think deserve support: https://ideas.lego.com/profile/JoshDaVidman/projects
I notice the Classic Space project above is the only active Classic Space project that has over 1,000 supports. I wish non-licensed ideas only required 1,000 supports or something like that.
Yep, I love the Air & Space museum. Shame his Apollo 11 recovery helicopter didn't make it, as that was a really nice set. The Buck Rogers Thuderfighter is great too, but I'm not sure anything from a show like that is ever going to make it.
I think we need another Classic Space inspired set, but I'm not sure that one's it. The main model seems to fall somewhere between ship and scooter in design; personally I prefer the look of smooth blue over greebled grey for vessels, rather than just 'blue bits'.
What about simple and sweet and sets geared to young girls? there aren't enough of those kinds of sets, I worked hard at capturing a DISNEY Jr. Show: MINNIE'S BOWTIQUE to the "T". I have so many elements from the show and in my updates included clips from the show for comparison purposes. It's so frustrating when I see not only mine but others who have 3k, 4k, 5k etc. viewers with very little SUPPORT VOTES. If you spent a few minutes looking at a set why not vote for it - even if you do not like it let LEGO IDEAS decide. It's the same on MOCpages tons of views and no comments on sets that would make your eyes pop and simple little ordinary sets get over 55 comments! Go figure! I think whenever I design on basic thing: LEGO STYLE! I as of today have 3k (3,000) views yet only 62 Support Votes-go figure! I am including a link to my LEGO IDEAS Project and as it first appeared on MOCpages! https://ideas.lego.com/projects/147115 and on MOCpages: http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/430443 . I got such beautiful comments on LEGO IDEAS, Today is my birthday what a wonderful present it would be if this helps me reach at least 75 votes! 10,000 votes are hard to come by so help! Not only me but others as well!
I think The Coral Reef and the Shark (https://ideas.lego.com/projects/118308) is something really different and imaginative. Probably a little big for Lego to produce, but I can see a scaled down version. It would be easy to expand to make it bigger, with more sets.
Where in the world are you getting the cost estimates from? 1300 parts for $50, 2300 parts for $100?! These cost estimates should be doubled!
I'm sure we will get a Arc de Triomphe, but in Ideas line.
The Lunar Outpost is awesome. We need more Space sets.
Briximals used to be a top commented project, shame it didn't make it. : ( It's funny because it was just a few of us that commented on every update SaveTheBrick released. Great project

Classic space? Count me in! And the real space one, too. Love that Apollo/Soyuz set.
That m and m dispenser needs to happen
Say Classic Space and i will be there. The Space set looks great.
But i think it may get som problems with the old landing plate. But love to get more of those.
Air and space also looks interesting.
I supported both the M&M dispenser and the LEGO (Lunar Exploration Geological Observatory) projects. As well as the Ion Cannon on the front page.
I love the classic space sets! I've recently been rebuilding my classic space sets from the early 80's, so these strike a particular chord with me personally. With a few tweaks, I think this would be fantastic! And to Brick Belt, I love your castle idea as well! Castle and space were by far my favorites as a kid, and I recently rebuilt my classic yellow castle as well! (Only missing four minifigs, 2 stickers and the string for the drawbridge)
I like the Mississippi Paddlewheel steamboat.
It has some interesting looking parts and is something TLG have not done for a while/ever?
In respect of the Lunar Exploration Geological Outpost, I think TLG doesn't like the typical MOC non-studded style for space ships.
8 great projects, only one based on IP. The classic space OMG of course Star Wars is getting all the space design but it's time for the revival of Classic Space.
Spaceship! Spaceship! Spaceship!
@ Sdetsky:
LEGO Ideas has four price brackets; $10-$49, $50-$99, $100-$199, and $200+. All prices are USD.
I looked at the US LEGO.com site and compared 10243 Parisian Restaurant at USD $160 with 2469 parts.
A 1300 parts set would retail at about $90 so would sit in the $50-$99 bracket. A 2300 parts set would retail for $160 so sit in the $100-$199 bracket.
@ MrMouth1117:
I selected LEGO Ideas projects using 'gathering support' and sorted them by using the 'most comments' option. There are so many projects that I have tried to use a different method of selecting sets for each article.
I will try to select sets geared to young girls in my next article, but I also feel that I have a balanced spread of sets for this article. Thanks for your feedback though. :-)
Keep in mind that the comments on LEGO Ideas are censored. They banned me from the website for crticising a bad project.
I think people are seriously kidding themselves with the cost estimates and the number of sets they think people will buy.
I know... the only time I feel I really misjudged the price was the Air and Space project... I thought it would be $50-ish, then I read the whole description and saw that it has 900 pieces. *facepalm*
But I have NEVER put more than 1 "number of sets people will buy." That's not you personally, that's most people who would buy the set. Get a grip, people...
